HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On getting the win over Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC… “It feels great, but we knew it was going to be difficult – as it was. They’re tough. These kind of games are battles. I’m very proud of how the guys continued to battle, how the guys continued to be disciplined, how they worked hard throughout the entire match and how they found a way at the end to be able to get the result that we wanted. But it took a lot of discipline and it was great. I’m just very proud of the effort that everyone put into the game.” On his game plan coming into the match and how it played out… “First of all, we thought they would come with five in the back to be a little bit more conservative, but also looking to be explosive in the counter – to find spaces and to move forward quickly. That’s why when we had the ball, we had to be smart – that if we lost the ball in some areas we had to cover spaces right away that way they wouldn’t find the counters, which I felt we did for the majority of the match very, very well. I thought that was the plan from their part. For us, it was a matter of staying disciplined – just wait for our moment, and at the end Blanco scored an amazing goal.” Portland Timbers midfielder Sebastian Blanco On why he celebrated his goal with a Chucky mask… “It’s my nickname in Argentina. When I started to play for Lanús, they gave me this name because I’m small. My wife wanted me to use it in some game and I think today was an amazing moment.” Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell On the team’s third shutout in a row… “I spoke to the whole back four during the week. We pride ourselves on keeping a clean sheet. We don’t look at a goal ratio, we look at clean sheets. The year we won the championship, Nat [Borchers] and I put out a marker of 15 clean sheets that year. It’s just been a big effort from everyone to keep solid, to keep compact, to cover each other and to work hard for each other. It’s not rocket science and it’s been great that the boys have bought into it and it’s paying off.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS LOS ANGELES FC SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2018 SCOUTING LAFC

UPCOMING MILESTONES

Currently underway in its expansion season, Los Angeles FC (6-2-2) enters Saturday’s game after completing a four-game unbeaten homestand, producing eight points (2-0-2) in those matches. Most recently, LAFC is coming off a 2-2 draw against New York City FC on May 13. Despite playing its first six games on the road, due to stadium construction, LAFC enters Saturday’s match with the most points (20) and goals (22) for an expansion team through its first 10 games to start a season. In addition to acquiring international players such as Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi ahead of the 2018 season, LAFC also bolstered its roster with MLS veterans such as Marco Urena, Laurent Ciman and Benny Feilhaber. Vela leads the team in goals scored (6).

With his next two appearances, midfielder Diego Chara, who has made 212 appearances in eight seasons with the Timbers, will tie Darlington Nagbe for the most appearances (214) in club history across all eras (since 1975).

HEADS UP

Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell played 90 minutes for the fifth time this season on May 13, helping to anchor a backline that produced its third straight clean-sheet win of the season in a 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC. Additionally, while playing at Providence Park, in Ridgewell’s last 20 home regularseason starts, the Timbers are 18-0-2 at Providence Park, with 48 goals for and 14 goals against.

Through their first nine games in league play, the Timbers lead MLS in headed goals (5), most recently scoring two headers in a 3-0 win over New York City FC on April 22. MIdfielder Sebastián Blanco ranks tied with five players for the most headed goals (2) in the league through the first 11 weeks to start the new campaign.

CLEAN-SHEET VICTORIES Coming off a 1-0 defeat over Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC at Providence Park on May 13, the Timbers have recorded three consecutive shutout victories for the first time in their MLS era and the first time across all eras in club history (since 1975) since a four-game shutout streak in the 2007 campaign (June 28July 13, 2007). Dating back to the start of the 2015 MLS campaign, the Timbers are tied for the fourth-most clean-sheets in MLS (29).

WORLD CUP BOUND On Monday, midfielder David Guzmán was named to Costa Rica’s 23-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, set to be held in Russia this summer beginning on June 14. Additionally, midfielder Andy Polo was named to Peru’s provisional squad on May 16. FIFA require the final 23-man squad lists to be finalized by June 4.

SCORING AT HOME Since the start of the 2016 season, the Timbers have been one of the most prolific home teams in the league, with 80 goals scored at Providence Park. Portland’s 80 goals since 2016 rank tied as the third-most in the league, behind only Toronto FC (82) and the New York Red Bulls (81), despite playing two fewer home games than Toronto and the Red Bulls. Portland has also scored in 16 straight home games, dating back to the 2017 campaign. Portland’s all-time record for consecutive home games with a goal is 21 matches, taking place over the course of three seasons (Oct. 25, 2015 - April 2, 2017).

HOME FORM Despite playing their first five games of the 2018 campaign away from home, the Timbers still maintain one of the strongest home records since the start of the 2016 campaign. During that stretch, Portland has recorded 26 wins (26-5-6) at home, which ranks tied as the most in the league with the New York Red Bulls.

TIMBERS INJURY REPORT QUESTIONABLE: Vytas (right thigh) OUT: Roy Miller (left achilles tendon), Jeremy Ebobisse (right thigh), Kendall McIntosh (right thigh) * As of May 17, 2018

With the Timbers currently riding a four-game winning streak, dating back to April 14, a win in Saturday’s match against Los Angeles FC would set a new club record for consecutive wins in MLS play. Portland previously won four straight games during the 2015 MLS campaign (May 27-June 20, 2015).

RIDGEWELL RETURNS

TIMBERS ON LOAN In T2’s most recent match, a 1-0 win over Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC 2, seven Timbers players appeared in the match, with defender Modou Jadama captaining the side. Midfielder Eryk Williamson scored the game-winning goal, tallying the first professional goal of his career when he scored in the second minute of stoppage time in the second half. Midfielder Victor Arboleda had the assist.

SEBA CHUCKY BLANCO In Portland’s most recent match, midfielder Sebastián Blanco scored the gamewinning goal in the 86th minute, tallying his team-high fifth goal of the season. Blanco’s goal was the latest game-winning goal for Portland in a match against Seattle since July 14, 2004. Additionally, Blanco became the 63rd different Portland player to score against Seattle in a competitive match across all eras (since 1975).

BLOCK PARTY Heading into Saturday’s match, the Timbers have blocked the third-most shots (40) in the league this season, ranking behind only Minnesota United FC (48) and New York City FC (45). Defender Liam Ridgewell leads the way for Portland having blocked nine shots so far this season.

REIGNING MVP Midfielder Diego Valeri enters the 2018 MLS season as the reigning Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player, after becoming the first Timbers player to receive MLS MVP honors following a record-setting 2017 campaign. Valeri’s record-setting season was highlighted by a team-high 21 goals, a career-high for the midfielder, and a team-high 11 assists, marking the fourth time the midfielder has hit double digits in goals and assists in his five seasons in MLS.

PROVIDENCE PARK EXPANSION Providence Park is currently in the midst of an extensive stadium construction that will add approximately 4,000 new seats and a striking new street-level colonnade along the eastern side of the stadium. As a function of the ongoing construction, access to parts of Providence Park will change or be off-limits for parts of the season. The current construction is phase one of the Timbers’ two-year plan to renovate the stadium, with the stadium renovation set to be completed during the 2019 MLS campaign.
