HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turnaround season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland. Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33). Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm. Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Timbers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tournament appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT C.D. OLIMPIA TUESDAY, OCT. 21, 2014 ABOUT CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Founded in 1962 as the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) tournament adopted its current format in 2008 and crowns the continental club champion among a field of 24 teams representing CONCACAF member associations. The 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League tournament marks the 50th overall edition of the annual international club competition with the winner earning a berth in the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup. Featuring 24 squads from each of CONCACAF’s three sub-regions - North America, Central America and the Caribbean - the CCL is played in two stages: the Group Stage and Championship Stage. Berths are allocated by country or, in the case of the Caribbean, through a separate qualifying competition. No club is allowed to be drawn into a group with one from its own country with the possible exception of a wildcard, which would qualify only if a representative from another CONCACAF-affiliated national association could not participate. Additionally, teams from the United States and Mexico are not allowed to face each other in the Group Stage. Only the group winners advance to the Championship Stage, which consists of a quarterfinal round, a semifinal round and a final round. In the quarterfinals, the group winner that completed the Group Stage with the best record will face the team with the eighth-best record from among the other group winners. In turn, two will play seven, three will play six, and four will face five. In the semifinals the winner of 1-vs-8 advances to meet the winner of 4-vs-5, while winners of 3-vs-6 and 2-vs-7 will square off against each other. Overall, Cruz Azul is the most successful CONCACAF club champion with six triumphs since 1962, followed by five for Club América and four for Pachuca. No team from MLS has won the competition since the format changed in 2008. The CONCACAF Champions League champion qualifies for the annual FIFA Club World Cup.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT C.D. OLIMPIA TUESDAY, OCT. 21, 2014 SCOUTING C.D. OLIMPIA Tuesday’s match will be the fourth, and final, group stage CCL game for Honduran club C.D. Olimpia as they previously beat Alpha United twice, winning 1-0 on the road in Guyana and earning a convincing 6-0 victory in Honduras before falling 4-2 against Portland at Providence Park. Olimpia currently sit in second place in Group 5 with six points (2-1-0). In the 2014 Liga Nacional Apertura domestic campaign in Honduras, Olimpia is in first place with a 6-3-4 record and +15 goal differential. Founded in 1912, Olimpia originally began as a baseball club but eventually morphed into a soccer team. They are the most decorated team in Honduras and are winners of 28 Liga Nacional championships. Olimpia is no stranger to international competition having won the CONCACAF Champions Cup - the earlier version of the CCL - in both 1973 and 1998. They were also runners-up in 1985 and 2000. They qualified for the 2014-15 CCL by winning the 2014 Liga Nacional Clausura. Known as Los Leones (The Lions), Olimpia has a record of 13-10-6 over the course of 29 games played (group stage and knockout) since 2008. Their best CCL finish was as a quarterfinalist in the 2010/11 edition. Olimpia are 0-2-3 lifetime against MLS competition in the current CCL format.

KNOCKOUT SCENARIOS Tuesday’s final group match will determine if the Timbers advance to the knockout rounds of the tournament, as a win or draw will see them through. Portland can also advance with a loss provided that C.D. Olimpia does not make up Portland’s two-goal lead in head-to-head goal differential. If the match finishes tied on head-to-head goal differential, the team with the most away goals scored in the head-to-head series will be the next tiebreaker. C.D. Olimpia leads on away goals (2-0), as the result of Portland’s 4-2 win on Sept. 16 at Providence Park. If Portland loses, but ties C.D. Olimpia on away goals, then total goal differential in all group games is the next tiebreaker. Portland (+11) currently holds the advantage over C.D. Olimpia (+5).

REPRESENTING HONDURAS Olimpia defender Javier Portillo, midfielders Carlos Will Mejía and Romell Quioto, forward Anthony Lozano and goalkeeper Noel Valladares were all part of Honduras’ 2014 FIFA World Cup team. Valladares was the national team captain for all three matches for Los Catrachos’ Group E play.

LEADERS FOR OLIMPIA During league play, forwards Romell Quioto (6 goals) and Alberth Elis (5) rank among goal-scoring leaders in Honduras’ Liga Nacional Apertura campaign.

ESTADIO TIBURCIO CARêAS ANDINO Tuesday match will take place at the home stadium of C.D. Olimpia, Estadio Tiburcio Carías Andino, and marks Portland’s first-ever trip to Central America. Built in 1948, the 66-year-old venue once was the national stadium for Honduras and played host to the 1981 CONCACAF Championship that saw Honduras qualify for its first FIFA World Cup tournament (Spain 1982). C.D. Olimpia has hosted MLS sides Houston Dynamo (2012-13) and Sporting Kansas City (201314) in the group stage of consecutive CONCACAF Champions League tournaments, sustaining a 2-0 loss against Sporting Kansas City (Aug. 27, 2013) and a 1-1 draw against Houston (Aug. 30, 2012).

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GOALS Portland ranks third in goal scoring among all teams in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League group stage. The Timbers have tallied 14 goals through three group games, trailing Mexican sides Club América (17) and Pachuca (15). Forward Maximiliano Urruti ranks tied for seventh overall among players with three goals, just two shy of leader Martín Zúñiga of Club América (5).

SCORING RATE Entering the weekend, the Timbers have scored 59 goals through 33 regularseason matches, the third-best mark in MLS and a new Timbers MLS singleseason record - surpassing the old mark of 54 goals set during an impressive 2013 campaign. With one regular-season games remaining on the schedule, the Timbers are on track to score 60 goals this season. Portland currently ranks third in MLS with a rate of one goal scored per 50.34 minutes. Only the LA Galaxy (43.04) and Seattle Sounders FC (47.14) have a faster scoring rate this season.

ON THE BOARD FIRST Under the guidance of head coach Caleb Porter, the Timbers are 18-3-9 overall when scoring first since the start of the 2013 MLS season.

NEVER OUT OF IT Despite conceding the opening goal in 20 matches this season, the Timbers have battled back for a result in 14 games for a league-best 5-6-9 record when allowing the first goal. Portland also holds the league’s best record when trailing at the half in games this season (1-4-5).

TIMBERS ANNOUNCE USL PRO CLUB, T2 On Tuesday, the Timbers announced that the club has formed Timbers 2 (to be referred to as T2), a professional team that will compete in USL PRO, a division of US Soccer below Major League Soccer. T2 will begin competing in USL PRO during the 2015 season and play their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland. The team will train at the club’s adidas Timbers Training Center in Beaverton, Ore.

STRONG AT THE FINISH Portland leads MLS with the most goals scored in the final 15 minutes of matches (16) and ranks first for the most second-half goals scored (38).

SPREAD THE WEALTH The Timbers are the only team in MLS with five players who have registered six or more goals during the regular season (Will Johnson 6, Gastón Fernández 7, Fanendo Adi, Maximiliano Urruti 9, and Diego Valeri 11). The feat marks the second consecutive season in which Portland has received six or more goals from five different players. With three goals in the last three matches, midfielder Rodney Wallace has registered five goals this season and is one shy of becoming Portland’s sixth player with six or more goals in the regular season.
