LAST MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers defeated New York City FC 1-0 before 23,651 fans at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 9, recording their second clean-sheet victory in the team’s last four games played. With the 1-0 win, the Timbers moved into first place in the Western Conference standings with 44 points, two points clear of Seattle Sounders FC.

The club proceeded to sell out all of its regular-season home games in the team’s first six MLS seasons. Spanning the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Timbers compiled an MLS-club record 22-game unbeaten streak (12-0-10) at Providence Park from April 6, 2013 to June 1, 2014. HEAD COACH CALEB PORTER Head coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 65-48-52, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (6237-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improvement and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, including a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (200612). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT REAL SALT LAKE SATURDAY, SEPT. 16, 2017 PREVIOUS MATCH - PORTLAND TIMBERS VS NEW YORK CITY FC (W 1-0) BOX SCORE

MATCH RECAP The Portland Timbers defeated New York City FC 1-0 before 23,651 fans at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 9, recording their second clean-sheet victory in the team’s last four games played. With the 1-0 win, the Timbers moved into first place in the Western Conference standings with 44 points, two points clear of Seattle Sounders FC. Additionally, with the victory, the Timbers (12-9-8, 44pts) became just the second team in the league to record a win at Yankee Stadium in 2017. Portland extended its unbeaten run in league play to four games, losing just once in its last eight regularseason games (5-1-2). Portland opened the scoring in the 44th minute when forward Darren Mattocks dispossessed NYCFC midfielder Andrea Pirlo just outside the 18-yard box. Driving into the box with the ball, Mattocks quickly found Valeri in space near the penalty spot, with the midfielder taking a touch before calmly blasting the ball inside the near post.

VS.

Portland Timbers (12-9-8, 44pts) vs. New York City FC (15-8-5, 50pts) Sept. 9, 2017 – Yankee Stadium (New York City) Goals by Half 1 2 F Portland Timbers 1 0 1 Seattle Sounders FC 0 0 0

The finish marked Valeri’s seventh straight game with a goal, with the midfielder tying the MLS record for consecutive games with a goal and becoming one of just four players in league history to record a goal in seven straight games. Valeri also extended his season tally to 17 goals, which ranks tied as the second-most goals in MLS in 2017. Valeri’s 17 goals are the most scored by a Portland player in a single season during the club’s MLS era.

Scoring Summary: POR: Valeri (Mattocks), 44

With 14 shots in the match, including an 8-3 edge over NYCFC (15-8-5, 50pts) in shots on target, Portland produced numerous goal-scoring opportunities throughout the 90-minute contest, forcing goalkeeper Sean Johnson to make seven saves in the match.

Next up, the Timbers will travel to face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 16. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific), the match against Real Salt Lake will be broadcast live on PDX TV (KPDX) with local radio broadcasts on KXL 101.1FM (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

NOTES •

• • • •

Since 2013, the Timbers have secured 89 points from road matches, which is just five points behind Sporting Kansas City for the most road points in that span. Portland has the most points (44), wins (12), and goals (49) among all MLS Western Conference teams this season. Portland is now 2-0-0 at Yankee Stadium, previously recording a 1-0 victory in the 2015 campaign. The Timbers have scored in 15 consecutive matches, which is the longest active streak in MLS. The shutout was the fourth this season by the Timbers and the second in their last four matches. NYCFC was held scoreless for the first time in their last 25 home matches. Diego Valeri scored for a seventh consecutive match, tying the MLS record for consecutive matches with a goal. Valeri joins Raul Diaz Arce (1997), Wolde Harris (2000), and Carlos Ruiz (2006) as the only players in league history to score a goal in seven straight games. Valeri’s goal was his 17th of the season, setting a club record for MLS goals in a single season. Valeri is one goal shy of tying the club’s all-era (since 1975) record for goals in a season. He is also just the fourth player in all eras of the club to score 17 or more league goals in a season (Fadi Afash, McKinley Tennyson and Alan Gordon). Valeri tied his own club record by attempting five shots on target in the match. He previously had five shots on target against the San Jose Earthquakes on Sept. 7, 2014. Darren Mattocks recorded his second assist of the season, both of which have occurred in the club’s last three matches.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter On what was the most impressive thing about his team’s performance… “We try to build our team like the modern team and what I mean by that is that you have to do a little bit of everything. I thought when we needed to press, we did. When we needed to drop off and absorb, we did. When we needed to keep the ball, we did. I thought we were ruthless if it wasn’t for, like I said, a few saves, I thought it was 2 or 3-0 and it would’ve been less gray hairs for me at the end of the game. But, again, we didn’t get the second goal and yet we made a lot of key plays at the end of the game to close out the match and that’s what you need. I thought everybody across the board played extremely well and we dealt with a lot. We had (David) Guzman and (Darlington) Nagbe who traveled from Costa Rica and Honduras after playing on Tuesday and they dug deep. And we had to insert some guys off the bench because we had some injuries and I thought Jebo (Jeremy Ebobisse) and Lawrence Olum came into the match and did the business. So, again, that’s what you need and we file this one away. We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. We have five games left but we’re going to keep approaching every game like it’s the playoffs and cup final. I think you can see the hunger in our team because we’re smelling the postseason.” Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri On scoring seven goals in seven straight games… “I’m happy about that because it is helping the team to get points in this part of the season, which is the most important. I’m happy about our position in the table as well. It’s important for us because we want to be in the playoffs. That’s our goal. So, I’m happy about the individual performance but mainly about the collective performance.”
