HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE Entering his first season with the club after being named head coach on Dec. 18, 2017, Savarese, the third head coach in Portland’s MLS history, brings over 25 years of professional experience as a player and coach to the Timbers organization. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Savarese joined the Timbers after spending the past five seasons as the head coach and sporting director of the New York Cosmos, where he developed one of the most successful clubs in the NASL, compiling a 6526-44 record in 135 regular-season games, including a career-best 20-7-5 record in 2016 and an undefeated NASL Spring Season in 2015. Additionally, the Cosmos scored 223 goals during Savarese’s five seasons at the helm, which rank as the most in the NASL during that stretch. Savarese also led the Cosmos to four Soccer Bowl appearances, claiming the 2013, 2015 and 2016 championships. Most recently, after a 10-7-15 record in the 2017 regular season, Savarese guided the Cosmos to their third straight appearance in the NASL championship match, narrowly falling 2-0 to the San Francisco Deltas. Prior to joining the Cosmos organization, Savarese, who holds a USSF “A” license, served as the head of youth development for the New York MetroStars/Red Bulls from 2005-2007, before joining the Cosmos as the club’s academy director in 2010, with a focus on developing youth talent in the greater New York area. Savarese served as the Cosmos academy director for two years before being announced as the head coach of the first Cosmos team in 28 years on November 19, 2012. Savarese enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career, including five seasons in Major League Soccer, scoring 159 goals in 322 games played in various leagues in the United States, Venezuela, Italy and England. At the international level, Savarese earned 30 caps for the Venezuela National Team from 1989-2001, scoring 10 goals, including a notable finish against South American rival Argentina in 1996. After beginning his professional career in Venezuela with Deportivo Italia in 1986, Savarese spent five seasons (1990-95) playing in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and the USISL before being drafted by the MetroStars in the inaugural MLS SuperDraft in 1996 as the ninth overall selection, notching a teamrecord 41 goals and 94 points in 85 regular-season appearances during three seasons with the club. The striker’s record stood until 2009 when it was surpassed by Juan Pablo Angel. Following his three seasons with the MetroStars, Savarese spent the 1999 MLS campaign with the New England Revolution, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. Shortly afterward, Savarese joined Italian Serie A club A.C. Perugia and was loaned to A.S. Viterbese in 2000, before returning stateside to join the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS season. After a brief stint with the Earthquakes, Savarese joined Swansea City where he scored 14 goals across all competitions, prior to signing with Millwall F.C. in 2001. Following short spells with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao and Italian club Sassari Torres, Savarese’s playing career concluded in 2004 after scoring five goals in 10 appearances with the Long Island Rough Riders. In the collegiate ranks, Savarese enjoyed a four-year (1990-93) playing career with Long Island University after moving to the United States from Venezuela in 1990. Savarese has also served as a member of the media, working as an analyst for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes. Giovanni and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Valentina and Alessandra.

Key plays In the third minute, a clearance from Conechny’s free kick fell to Andy Polo outside the 18-yard box, but his dipping shot toward the center of goal was parried away by Minnesota goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Three minutes later, Blanco dispossessed the ball from a Minnesota player on the left wing and sent a left-footed shot from the left edge of the penalty area into the side netting. United FC took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute after Darwin Quintero slid a pass across the face of goal to Romario Ibarra, who finished from close range. Minnesota doubled its advantage in the 36th minute after Quintero’s pass found Ibarra inside the six-yard box and he hit a one-time shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the game. United FC took a 3-0 lead just before halftime after Quintero’s corner-kick service fell to the feet of Michael Boxall, who directed a right-footed shot from the center of the penalty area into the back of the net in the 43rd minute. Portland created the first chance of the second half in the 49th minute. Dribbling at three Minnesota players, Samuel Armenteros was able to find space near the edge of the box, spinning and firing a shot just wide of the right post. The Timbers tallied their first goal of the match to make it 3-1 off a corner kick in the 55th minute. Flores delivered a driven kick into the box and Minnesota attempted to clear the ball, but waiting at the edge of the box, Powell blasted a perfect strike into the top, right corner of the goal for his second goal of the season. Steve Clark, who finished the match with seven saves, made a stop in the 61st minute on a Minnesota counter-attack. Quintero passed the ball to Miguel Ibarra making a late run into the box down the left side and he fired a low, hard shot that Clark dove to his left to parry away. Portland cut its deficit to a single goal in the 80th minute to make it a 3-2 game. Diego Chara played a pass to Diego Valeri, who slid a pass off to Villafaña making a run down the left side of the field. Villafaña picked his head up and cut back playing a pass to the center of the box for Blanco, who converted for his seventh goal of the season. Continuing to push for the game-tying goal, Polo put a side-footed strike from inside the box on frame, forcing Shuttleworth to dive to his right and deny Polo at pointblank range in the 89th minute.

NOTABLE QUOTES Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese On his evaluation of the match… “The second half, that was our team. We came in with the right energy. We spoke in the locker room and we did the things we know we are capable of. We almost tied the game. I think we had good chances and it was a great effort. This is the team that we have to have. This is the team that can come out and play away and get victories because what we did in the second half was fantastic.” On changing to a 4-2-3-1 in the second half… “They we having too much space wide. Their fullbacks were initiating deeper so they were pushing our midfielders to go so far away. So that’s why we put two guys wide in order to pressure them a little bit quicker and have a little bit more presence in the middle.” On bringing Diego Chara into the game… “He did a fantastic job coming inside. Not only him, the entire team played a fantastic second half. If it weren’t for a few little details we could have tied and won this game.” Portland Timbers defender Jorge Villafaña His overall thoughts on the match… “Difficult. We knew it was going to be difficult coming off a game midweek and they [Minnesota United FC] being rested. Nevertheless, we fought until the end, we created a lot of chances and we almost had the opportunity to tie the game.” Portland Timbers defender Alvas Powell On the difference in the second half… “It was as wakeup call in the first half. Then that mentality we brought it back in the second half. We grew even stronger after we got the first goal and it gave us confidence to get the second goal. We fought to the end. But as I said in the first half we just gave up some easy goals. And we are going to get back to training and work on all those things.”

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS. FC DALLAS SATURDAY, SEPT. 29, 2018 SCOUTING FC DALLAS FC Dallas (15-6-8, 53pts) sits atop the Western Conference standings after earning a 2-1 win on the road against Vancouver on Sept. 23. FC Dallas is unbeaten in its last three matches and visits Providence Park with one of the best road records (6-5-3) in the Western Conference this season. Individually, Roland Lamah leads the team with eight goals this season, while Maximiliano Urruti has tallied a team-best nine assists along with seven goals.

ASSIST MEN Sebastián Blanco recorded his ninth assist of the season in Portland’s 3-2 win against Columbus Crew SC at Providence Park on Sept. 19. He is the second Timbers player to record nine or more assists in a single MLS season. Additionally, his 17 career assists for Portland ranks tied for the eighth most assists across all eras (since 1975). With his assist, Andy Polo became the sixth different player to register multiple assists for the Timbers in 2018.

HOME FORM Despite playing their first five games of the 2018 campaign away from home, the Timbers still maintain one of the strongest home records since the start of the 2016 campaign. During that stretch, Portland has recorded 33 wins (33-7-9) at home, which ranks first in the Western Conference and second in the league behind only the New York Red Bulls, (33), despite playing two fewer games than MLS teams ranked in the top five for home wins during that span.

SCORING AT HOME Since the start of the 2016 season, the Timbers have been one of the most prolific home teams in the league, with 100 goals scored at Providence Park. Portland’s 100 goals since 2016 ranks leads the Western Conference and ranks third in MLS behind Toronto FC (103) and New York City FC (101).

CLOSING OUT GAMES Heading into Saturday’s game, the Portland Timbers have been effective at closing out games through their first 30 games of the 2018 MLS regular season campaign. The Timbers have held a lead at the 75th minute mark in 12 games this season, posting a solid 10-1-1 record in those matches.

EL MAESTRO

SEBA CHUCKY BLANCO Portland Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco tallied his seventh goal of 2018 in a 3-2 loss at Minnesota United FC at TCF Bank Stadium on Sept. 22. However, Blanco, who picked up a yellow card in the match, will be suspended for Saturday’s match against FC Dallas due to yellow card accumulation.

HEADS UP Through their first 30 games in league play, the Timbers rank tied for first in MLS with Atlanta United FC in headed goals (13), with midfielder David Guzmán scoring the team’s most recent header in a 3-2 win over Columbus Crew SC at Providence Park on Sept. 19. Portland defender Larrys Mabiala has recorded four total goals in 2018, all headers, ranking tied for fifth in the league for headed goals in 2018.

STRIKE RATE In over 1,200 minutes of regular-season action in the 2018 MLS campaign, forward Samuel Armenteros has posted eight goals in 17 starts, ranking as the second-most on the team, in his debut MLS season. Armenteros is the fourth Timbers player to score eight or more goals in his first season in MLS, joining Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi and Sebastián Blanco.

MILESTONE MARKER Since making his debut for the Timbers as a 19-year-old in 2013, defender Alvas Powell has now played in 119 MLS matches for Portland. Against D.C. United on Aug. 15, Powell became the 15th player in Portland’s all-era history to play 115 league matches for the Timbers.

BETWEEN THE PIPES In 20 regular-season starts this season, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella has only four losses, conceding 21 goals. His goals-against-average of 1.05 ranks as the second-lowest in MLS in 2018 amongst goalkeepers with at least 10 starts. Additionally, Attinella’s 404-minute clean-sheet streak (April 14-May 19) is the longest by a Timbers goalkeeper in MLS play. As a team, the Timbers rank seventh in the league in fewest-goals allowed (45) this season.

100TH MLS WIN

With a goal in Portland’s home match against the Colorado Rapids on Sept. 8, Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri tallied his team-leading 10th goal of 2018. With the finish, Valeri, who also has 10 assists, is one of seven players in MLS to post 10-plus goals and 10-plus assists in the 2018 season.

Portland registered its 100th MLS win in the 3-2 win over Columbus Crew SC at Providence Park on Sept. 19. The Timbers are the first post-2010 expansion team to reach the 100-win mark, beating both Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2011 expansion team) and the Philadelphia Union (2010 expansion team). Additionally, the victory improved Portland record to 10-2-3 in 15 matches at home during the 2018 regular season.

TIMBERS FIRSTS
