Timbers Playoff History NASL In eight seasons in the North American Soccer League from 1975-82, the Timbers reached the postseason three times, including a thrilling run to Soccer Bowl ’75 in their inaugural season as a franchise. After earning the No. 1 spot in the NASL Western Division, the Timbers won 2-1 in a sudden-death overtime match against Cascadia-rival Seattle in front of 31,000 fans at Civic Stadium (now Providence Park) on Aug. 12, 1975. Following a 1-0 win in the semifinal against St. Louis, the Timbers advanced to Soccer Bowl ’75 to face the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. Despite a historic run in their inaugural season, the Timbers suffered a 2-0 loss in the championship match.
USL The reborn Portland Timbers began play in 2001 as a second-division side in USL and qualified for the postseason in seven of their 10 seasons. After reaching the quarterfinals in 2001 and the first round in 2002, the Timbers won the Commissioner’s Cup with the best regular-season record in 2004. In the conference semifinals, the Timbers fell in a two-game, aggregate-goals series against the Seattle Sounders. A game-winning goal by Seattle (advancing 3-2 on aggregate) ushered the Timbers out of the playoffs. The Timbers once again won the Commissioner’s Cup in 2009 and automatically qualified for the semifinals before falling 5-4 in a two-game, aggregate-goals series against Vancouver.

Timbers Playoff History MLS The Timbers made their first-ever MLS Cup Playoffs appearance in 2013. Under the direction of first-year head coach Caleb Porter, the Timbers finished first in the Western Conference after ending the regular season with an eight-game unbeaten streak, setting MLS-club records in points (57) and shutouts (15). The Timbers defeated Seattle Sounders FC 5-3 on aggregate in the Western Conference Semifinals to reach the conference finals against Real Salt Lake. Portland would eventually go on to lose 5-2 on aggregate against Real Salt Lake. Portland qualified for the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs as the third seed in the Western Conference after ending the regular season on a three-game winning streak. After 120 minutes of regulation in a 2-2 draw against Sporting Kansas City in the Western Conference Knockout Round match, the Timbers would go on to defeat Sporting 7-6 in an 11-round penalty-kick shootout, which was the longest in the history of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Portland defeated Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 on aggregate to reach the Western Conference Championship series against top seeded FC Dallas. The Timbers captured the 2015 MLS Western Conference Championship, advancing to the club’s first appearance in MLS Cup thanks to a 3-1 win at Providence Park on Nov. 22, 2015 and a 2-2 draw on Nov. 29, 2015 at Toyota Field for a 5-3 aggregate win over FC Dallas. Advancing to the 2015 MLS Cup in Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 6, the Timbers squared off against Columbus Crew SC at MAPFRE Stadium. Midfielder Diego Valeri scored the fastest goal in MLS Cup history just 27 seconds into the match after Portland pressured Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark. Valeri slid to block Clark’s attempted clearance, knocking the ball into the back of an open net. The Timbers scored the game-winning goal in the seventh minute when midfielder Darlington Nagbe played the ball out wide to forward Lucas Melano on the right side of the field. Melano sent a well-placed cross into the box for midfielder Rodney Wallace, who connected on a diving header past Clark to give the Timbers a 2-0 lead. Despite Columbus pulling a goal back in the 18th minute, Portland would go on to capture their first-ever MLS Cup title with a 2-1 win over Columbus.

Our crowd, our fans, our supporters, the Timbers Army, I think maybe they were the ones that kept that last ball out of the net. It was either them or it was God because the thing bounced twice and I don’t know how it didn’t go in. - Timbers head coach Caleb Porter after a 7-6 penalty-kick win over Sporting Kansas City in the Knockout Round of the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs at Providence Park on Oct. 29, 2015.

ODP/REGIONAL TRAINING CENTERS In partnership with OYSA, the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC oversee the state’s Olympic Development Program (ODP). As part of this partnership, the Timbers have expanded the state’s regional training center program to seven locations, and train locally at these sites 18-20 times a year. In the spring of each year, RTC programs are brought together to hold training and games. Over the RTC tournament weekend, Timbers coaching staff members select the best players in the Homegrown territory to form Timbers and Thorns FC ODP teams, otherwise known as pre-academy or academy reserve teams. The club’s 2000 Timbers Boys ODP team won its first regional ODP championship in January 2017, competing against all states in the western United States. In addition, Idaho Youth Soccer Association runs three RTC programs.
TIMBERS YOUTH LEAGUES, TOURNAMENTS & CAMP The Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ comprehensive youth development structure. The Timbers and OYSA provide its clubs resources for coaching education and share best practices in player development, creating a unified development philosophy across the state. The Timbers offer an exciting camp program for soccer players of all ages and skill levels throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Each camp is centered on age-appropriate exercises and activities designed to develop technical excellence and build a love for the game.
