MIDFIELDER
Timbers Q&A
HEIGHT: 5-8 WEIGHT: 150 DOB: 04/05/1986 BIRTHPLACE: Cali,
Colombia
DiegoChara
Timbers midfielder Diego Chara reflects back on eight seasons with the club. You were injured at the end of last season and couldn’t help the club in the playoffs. How was the process returning from injury? “At the beginning, the recovery was very hard for me because I love playing. Last season, I couldn’t help the team on the field, but sometimes that happens in soccer. Now, I have the opportunity to play again. I feel very, very good. I feel happy because I can help the team.”
This is now your eighth season with the Timbers. How would you describe the past eight years and what they’ve meant to you and your family? “It’s been amazing. The first couple of seasons with the team were tough because we couldn’t get good results. After that, I think we were better in getting to a new level in making the playoffs and winning the championship. I have amazing memories here. It’s hard to explain with words, my life and career in Portland with my family and friends. I think everything is amazing now.”
You’re now one of the veteran players on the team. How does it feel to mentor some of the younger players in the group? “I don’t know if I’m a mentor, but I try to help the young players. I try to maybe show them what to do on the field and off the field. I try to talk to them about my experiences in my career. I try to help, but they always decide what they want to do with it. After eight seasons, I think the younger players see a good role model in me. For that, I feel good.”
With his appearance against Seattle Sounders FC on Aug. 27, 2017, Chara became the second player in the club’s MLS era to play 200 league games.
*Signed as the Timbers’ first Designated Player on April 13, 2011. You came to Portland not knowing any English, and now you’re able to conduct interviews without a translator. How would you describe the process in learning English over the years? “I think right now, I’m reaching my goal. One of those goals is to speak English. I think year by year, I’ve gotten better with the English language. I think it’s great to have the opportunity to communicate with the fans and the community during Stand Together Week. I came here when my daughter was a year old. Now she’s in school here in the third grade. My youngest child is in kindergarten. Spending time with them in the community helps with my English too. I think my teacher for the classes here is very good. All of this helped me with my knowledge of the language.”

Timbers Social Timbers defender Zarek Valentin picks three of his favorite Instagram posts and explains their significance.
Wildfang: “Wildfang is based in Portland. They’re all about gender equality and I believe heavily in that stemming from the fact I have strong women in my life. My mom and my fiancée are both extremely strong women, so to have them in my life and to know how vital they are to me and my everyday living, in addition to the positive effect they have on the world around them, makes me very grateful.”
Equality: "This takes the idea of the Wildfang post and generalizes it throughout all races and all genders. I think we all need to have an equal place in society. I don’t think we’re given that, and that sucks. I like being in Portland because I think we do provide opportunities. We don’t see people by color or by gender, we see them for the qualities that they have. That’s one of the reasons why my fiancée and I love living in Portland. People don’t fit into a box here. It’s cool to be different.”
26
Eagles celebration: “I’m a lifelong Eagles fan and my fiancée, Liz, filmed my reaction to the Eagles winning their first Super Bowl. Being an Eagles fan is tough because we get a lot of slack from other fans for how we act, and rightfully so because we’re kind of jerks. Liz got my reaction right when we won. I started tearing up a little bit and called my brothers and dad. We usually blow it, but this time we did it. To be the underdog and win is a moment I’ll never forget."

Timbers Development
R
ooted in the club’s deep history, the Timbers have a passion for developing youth players and the sport of soccer in the region. Through partnerships established with Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA) and Oregon’s Olympic Development Program (ODP), the Timbers have built a comprehensive vertical development structure, which allows players within the club’s development territory a direct path from the youth level to the top tier of professional soccer in North America – Major League Soccer.
PORTLAND TIMBERS 2
adidas TIMBERS ALLIANCE
The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid is T2. Playing in their fourth season in the 33-team USL, T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a professional team that creates a bridge between the Timbers Academy and the Timbers first team.
The adidas Timbers Alliance is a strategic partnership between the club and elite local youth clubs throughout the Timbers’ development territory, designed to build unique working relationships and development opportunities to help channel the top youth players toward Timbers development programs and academy. Started in 2012, the alliance includes the following clubs: Idaho (Boise Nationals FC, Sting Timbers FC), the Portland metro area (Westside Timbers, Eastside Timbers), Central Oregon (Bend FC Timbers), Southern Oregon (Rogue Valley Timbers), the Willamette Valley (Capital FC Timbers, Eugene Timbers FC), Southwest Washington (Washington Timbers) and New Mexico (Las Cruces Timbers).
PORTLAND TIMBERS U23 In 2017, the Portland Timbers ventured into a partnership with Capital FC Timbers in Salem, Ore., where the Salem-based club will handle the day-to-day operations of the Portland Timbers U23 PDL team, while the MLS club will provide resources and assist with player recruitment and selection. The team won the PDL national championship in 2010.
PORTLAND TIMBERS ACADEMY The Timbers Academy consists of teams in the U-18/19, U-16/17, U-15, U-14 and U-13 age brackets of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The Timbers Academy provides elite youth players from the Timbers development territory advanced training and competitive opportunities against the best youth players across North America.

ODP/REGIONAL TRAINING CENTERS In partnership with OYSA, the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC oversee the state’s Olympic Development Program (ODP). As part of this partnership, the Timbers have expanded the state’s regional training center program to eight locations, and train locally at these sites 18-20 times a year. In the spring of each year, RTC programs are brought together to hold training and games. Over the RTC tournament weekend, Timbers coaching staff members select the best players in the Homegrown territory to form Timbers and Thorns FC ODP teams, otherwise known as pre-academy or academy reserve teams. The club’s 2000 Timbers Boys ODP team won its first regional ODP championship in January 2017, competing against all states in the western United States. In addition, Idaho Youth Soccer Association runs three RTC programs.
TIMBERS YOUTH LEAGUES, TOURNAMENTS & CAMP The Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ comprehensive youth development structure. The Timbers and OYSA provide its clubs resources for coaching and referee education and share best practices in player development, creating a unified development philosophy across the state. The Timbers offer an exciting camp program for soccer players of all ages and skill levels throughout Oregon, Southwest Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Missouri, Montana and New Mexico. Each camp is centered on age-appropriate exercises and activities designed to develop technical excellence and build a love for the game.
