E S P I G A R Quem por cá anda, sabe que os caminhos que descem à Estação de S. Bento são ruas de oportunidades, onde cada um faz por fazer-se à vida. Por entre os ritmos cadenciados da Estação e da cidade planeada, espigam táticas espontâneas e bravias de vivência e sobrevivência. Gestos que irrompem abruptamente como a natureza irredutível da cidade e das pessoas do Porto, como o afloramento de pedra que assoma sob o casario ou como a palmeira solitária que resiste no logradouro. Agora que Rua da Madeira se transfigura no Largo da Estação para integrar-se na cidade que se desenvolve, como se desenharão modos de estar a partir dos sinais de vida aqui hoje latentes e resistentes? Those who are here know that the paths that lead to the S. Bento Railway Station are streets of opportunity, where each and every one tries to earn one’s living. To the rhythm of the Station and of the planned city, spontaneous and wild tactics of life and survival grow up. Gestures that rise all of a sudden like the unbending nature of the city and the people from Porto, with the stones that stand under the houses or the lonely palm tree resisting on the yard. Now that Rua da Madeira is changing on the Largo da Estação to become integrated in the city that is developing, what will be the attitudes designed from the life signals that are now latent and resistant?
A pergunta foi lançada numa convocatória aberta a propostas sem disciplina, que estabelecessem diálogos com os ritmos diários e semanais do lugar: desde as manhãs de chegada a São Bento, aos almoços rotinados da Rua da Madeira, à música de início de tarde que ecoa da Rua Cimo de Vila. 39 foram as propostas nacionais e internacionais apreciadas, vindas de todos aqueles que se candidataram a programadores culturais durante uma semana. Estão agora em marcha 5 projetos que resultam de fusões e reformulações de projetos pré-selecionados. Estão-se a conhecer lendas e segredos, a convidar músicos e cozinheiros, a recolher objetos e detritos. Para em breve apresentar à cidade o que se espiga por São Bento e arredores. The question was asked through an inquiry opened to suggestions without reproach, that would establish dialogues with the daily and weekly rhythms of the place: from the arrivals at S. Bento in the morning to the routine lunches at Rua da Madeira, and to the music at the beginning of the afternoon, echoing along Rua Cimo de vila. 39 were the national and international suggestions assessed, coming from all those applying to become cultural programmers for one week. Now we have 5 projects being developed that are the result of fusions and reformulations of pre-selected projects. Legends and secrets are being revealed, cooks and musicians are being invited, objects and waste are being collected. Soon what grows up at São Bento and around it will be presented to the city. A partir da semana de 13 de Abril até 10 Maio, vão espigar conversas encosta acima, concertos empoleirados em muros, teatros atrás da porta, exposições empilhadas em praças, refeições à volta da árvore. 4 semanas de programação cultural na envolvente de São Bento, pontuada por atividades que convidam a cidade a escrevinhar, gatafunhar, fotografar, musicar ou martelar, interpretando as linhas que já sulcam este lugar. From April 13 up to May 10, chats will be growing up the hill, as will concerts on walls, theatres behind doors, exhibitions pilled upon squares, meals around the tree. A 4 week-cultural programme around São Bento, with activities that invite the city to scribble, draw, photograph, make music or drum, interpreting the lines already marked on this place.

Tudo para toda a família. Bonds that bring us Portuguese and Anglo Saxons together are the theme for guided visits, chats animated by those who know the city’s secrets, music compositions on the street, exotic flavours, photographic raids topped up with a street festival that takes us into a Sunday dance. All of this addressed to the entire family.

Os segredos, mitos e memórias, contados pela boca de quem os viveu ou sonhou, são o fio que nos vai amarrar a ruas, vielas e portas que se emaranham nas costas de São Bento. Oficinas de fotografia, ilustração, escrita criativa e modelação 3D reescrevem a ficção do lugar. E para celebrar, um concerto de sons e músicos do Porto, das ruas e dos palcos. Secrets, myths and memories, told by those who lived them or dreamt of them, are the string that ties us to streets and doors at São Bento’s back. Photography, illustration, creative writing and 3D modelling rewrite the fiction of the place. And to celebrate, a concert of sounds and musicians from Porto, from the streets and the stages.

d e m o + s o n o s c o p i a Nesta semana procuram-se futuros. Em todos os recantos das Ruas Cimo de Vila, Chã, Cativo e Loureiro. Ardinas do passado distribuem pasquins futuros, orquestras e solos emitem sons de máquinas digitais e analógicas, um teatro itinerante revela futuros congelados no tempo atrás de uma porta, uma instalação sonora faz de cada transeunte um maestro de ocasião. During this week we are looking for futures. All around the streets Cimo de Vila, Chã, Cativo and Loureiro. Street newspaper sellers of old times are distributing future magazines, orchestras and solos play sounds of digital and analogical machines, an itinerant theatre reveals futures that are frozen in time behind a door, a sound installation turns every passer-by into an occasional maestro.

O que não quer, será levado; o que mais quer, será mostrado. Do que já não é útil, nem bonito, nem valioso, construiremos uma oficina, um quiosque, uma praça. Do que mais quer nascerá um museu, um museu da sua rua, da sua história, da sua comunidade. We will tread others’ houses, we will talk to the neighbours, we will “assault” the grocery and the newsstand. What you don’t want we will take; what you most want will be shown. From what is no longer useful, nor beautiful, nor valuable we will build a workshop, a newsstand, a square. From what you most want, a museum will be born, a museum of your street, your history, your community.

s o pa d e p e d r a S T O N E S O U P - F R O M M AY 4 T O 1 0 colectivo projecto warehouse + marco raposo Monta-se um estaleiro num largo. Madeiras, ferramentas e braços que se vão juntando. Martelam-se bancos e uma mesa que cresce. Ao fim de uma semana, descansamos nos bancos e repousamos os braços, apoiados na mesa. E então, com fôlogo, conversamos sobre o que foi o Espigar, para quem cá estava, quem viu chegar, quem chegou de novo ou pela primeira vez, quem agora não quer partir. O debate é alimentado por uma sopa de pedra, servida continuamente entre os que chegam e os que se levantam. A sopa de pedra engrossa e tempera-se com o contributo de todos os que se juntam para partilhar uma refeição com quem ainda não conhecem e assim saber mais desta cidade.
A construction yard is set on a square. Wood, tools and arms brought together. Seats and a growing table are assembled. After a week you can rest on the seats, supported by the table. We then take a breath and talk about what Espigar was, for those who were here, who they saw coming, who returned or came for the first time, who doesn’t want to leave now. The debate is served with a “sopa de pedra” (stone soup), poured regularly from those that arrive to those that leave. The “sopa de pedra” gets thicker and savoured with everybody’s help, getting together to share a meal with unknown people and thus getting to know more about this city.
