In 1725 Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach published his Entwürff einer historischen Architektur. The title of the book is bizarre. Translated, it would be something like “Project of a Historical Architecture” – not a history of architecture, but a project of historical architecture. Indeed, although beginning with an extremely attentive use of his limited sources, Fischer designs all of the buildings listed in his book: the Temple of Solomon, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the pyramids of Giza, Sultan Ahmed’s mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Mecca Grand Mosque, Naqsh-e Jahan square, the Forbidden City, theNanjing Porcelain Tower, the Isola Bella and Stonehenge. Implicitly opposing Laugier’s ideal reconstruction of a perfectly individualistic origin for architecture, Fischer opts for real and collective beginnings. There is no primitive hut in the Entwürff; on the contrary, there you will find Stonehenge. Fischer’ book is largely the product of his incomplete sources, yet it is possible to recognize – retroactively – a method in the Entwürff and apply this method to contemporary monuments. Fischer’s method would be instrumental to return to observing a group of architectural phenomena that have been largely ignored by Modern architecture. Indeed, contemporary society did not erase collective, ritual, symbolic behaviours; on the contrary, for the last three centuries, modern architecture turned its back to such issues. It is anyhow possible to re-consider contemporary rituals inside of a rational perspective. This endeavour would help us elaborating a more complex and realistic notion of architecture. As a first attempt, we tried to re-use the Fischer’s method to develop a project for the sanctuary of Fatima.

PORTO ACADEMY 2013 www.portoacademy.info From the 20th to the 27th of July 2013, Indexnewspaper organized ‘Porto Academy’ at Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP). The academy consisted of a weeklong workshop with Anne Holtrop, Camilo Rebelo, Go Hasegawa, João Pedro Serôdio (Serôdio Furtado), Johan Anrys (51N4E), Nuno Brandão Costa, Pascal Flammer, Pier Paolo Tamburelli (Baukuh) , Raphael Zuber and Thomas Raynaud (Building building). It also included ten lectures from those architects plus five master classes from guest architects : Alexandre Alves Costa (Atelier 15), Álvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Marcos Acayaba and Milton Braga (MMBB), exposing thoughts about “Porto and Paulista Schools”.
