PORTO SURREALISMO A Vacation House at Praia de Mar e Sol
Together with our students, we aim to manifest an attitude of openmindedness: each project is to be non-dogmatically thought according to its own set of rules deriving from the specific internal and external conditions. A unique kind of playfulness is evoked that finds equal merit in the urban, rural and primeval realm. At the basis of our realistic-utopian approach, a cultivated eclecticism is to intensify the students’ observations, memories and intuitions. Since the goal is not to emulate the past, nor to be lost in the fantasies of the future, we seek to foster forms and spaces of inherent necessity that make one pause as they radiate presence and unveil our being-in the world. Accommodating the complexities of life, the projects’ impact will be measured upon their degree of achieving a radical sense of beauty.
SURREALIST MANIFESTO André Breton, 1924
SURREALISM, n. Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express – verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner – the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by the thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern. ENCYCLOPEDIA. Philosophy. Surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of previously neglected associations, in the omnipotence of dream, in the disinterested play of thought. It tends to ruin once and for all all other psychic mechanisms and to substitute itself for them in solving all the principal problems of life.
