FOR HEALTH AND FAT LOSS
Jetts Personal Trainer Jason Gillespie gives us the low-down on fibre
Do you constantly feel bloated or find it hard to lose weight around the midsections? Chances are, you aren’t getting enough fibre in your diet. There are two main types of fibre that we acquire from food; soluble fibre and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibres attach themselves to fatty acids, which slows digestion and allows blood sugars to be released more slowly so you feel fuller for longer. Soluble fibres also help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and are vital for a person with diabetes as they help regulate blood sugar levels. The best sources of soluble fibre are: lentils, pears, oats, nuts, flaxseeds, beans, psyllium, celery and carrots. Insoluble fibres are not broken down by the body. The main benefit of these types of fibre is to help move waste though the intestines and control the pH balance. These fibres help prevent constipation and keep you regular. The best sources of insoluble fibre are: seeds, nuts, broccoli, cabbage, raspberries, root vegetable skins and whole grains. Having a clean and healthy digestive system is extremely important for both health and weight loss.
Not consuming enough fibre will leave rotting and putrefying food in your intestines, which releases free radicals into your blood stream and travels throughout your body. Having clogged intestines also inhibits your body’s ability to absorb the nutrients from the food we consume. If your body can’t absorb the nutrition, you feel hungry and want to eat more. This is leading our ever expanding problem of being over fed and under nourished. Most nutritionists recommend consuming 25-40 grams of fibre per day from natural and whole foods, as they contain other nutrients that aren’t found in “function” fibre supplements. A combination of both is great if you find it hard to fit within your nutrition plan. Start today by introducing some fibre rich foods into your diet; there’s no time like now to start feeling better, have more energy and reduce bloating.

WINTER HAIR TIP FROM
Brrrr…on these cold wintery mornings it is getting harder and harder to bounce out of bed. However make sure you don’t let that extra five minutes of snoozing eat into your fabulous morning hair routine! It is always a good idea to dry your hair before leaving the house – whether it’s blow-drying or if you’re lucky to have sleek locks – au naturale. If you head off to start your day with wet hair not only are you increasing your chances of becoming the next victim of the winter flu, but the moisture in your hair combined with the cold air can actually damage your hair and make it more dry and brittle.

It’s just a better way of living.
LIVING ‘Vertical villages’ are increasingly luring families from the suburbs to the inner city, as they ditch large family homes in favour of low maintenance apartments to simplify their life and maximise family time. The traditional dream of raising a family on a quarter acre block is being challenged by vibrant new apartment developments on the cusp of the CBD where convenience is king, with work and lifestyle literally at the doorstep. The Zeneldin family are among the new wave of families moving from their large house to an inner city apartment having just relocated to their brand new home at Portside Wharf - a mixed use community on the Brisbane River in the heart of Northshore Hamilton - the city’s largest urban renewal project. Mr Zeneldin said he swapped his five bedroom, five bathroom house in Calamvale for a two bedroom apartment in the precinct’s latest stage, Pinnacle, because he wanted convenience without the maintenance. “We realised we were spending too much precious family time mowing lawns, maintaining gardens and cleaning the house and we wanted to create an easier lifestyle,” he said. “Our apartment in Pinnacle is the perfect size for myself, my wife and our two boys with enough room for the kids to have a play area and my wife and I to enjoy some space to ourselves. “We make great use of the rooftop pool and entertainment area as well as the dining, shopping and conveniences in the Portside Wharf precinct.

Brookfield Residential Properties General Manager Lee Butterworth said masterplanned projects such as Northshore Hamilton were giving developers the canvas to create integrated communities with forethought and planning, forming inner-city neighbourhoods for the 21st century. He said while apartment living was once confined to the CBD, a shift in the market was seeing a diverse mix of buyers flock to action-packed areas surrounding the city. “Integrated communities such as Northshore Hamilton that are in easy reach of the CBD are popular with buyers who want everything at their doorstep without the hassle of city living fraught with traffic jams and parking problems,” he said. “Retail and residential precincts, such as Portside Wharf, provide the best of both worlds, offering city conveniences without the hustle and bustle. “This lifestyle has been the attraction for many buyers but now, more than ever, we are seeing families take advantage of the benefits of inner-city apartment living.” Portside Wharf is located six kilometres from the CBD with easy access to key economic areas, airports, motorways and public transport. The riverside precinct is home to six residential buildings and almost 40 retailers including fine dining, cafes, eateries, boutique shopping, health and beauty, an IGA supermarket and Dendy Cinema.
“We now have everything at our fingertips and more time to spend doing the things we love. “It’s just a better way of living.”
