BURRITO BAR CELEBRATES CINCO DE MAYO The Burrito Bar will be alive with the sound of music on Saturday May 3, as it celebrates Cinco De Mayo. A mariachi band will set the vibe, playing from 11am to 2pm, and there will be specials on Mexican drinks. Cinco De Mayo is a time to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy, by celebrating with culture and experiences. So, stop in and enjoy some great Mexican food, drinks and tunes and get into the spirit!

MAKE MUM THE BELLE OF THE BALL Dendy Cinemas Portside is hosting a special Mother’s Day screening of Belle, including a complimentary drink on arrival thanks to Janz and a $25 gift voucher and free sample from Ella Baché Portside Hamilton. Belle is the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mabatha-Raw), who was the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral and a negress slave. Belle was a remarkable figure in 18th century society, being the first mixed-race woman to be raised as an aristocrat. Being in the care of her great-uncle, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. The event starts at 10am on Sunday May 11 at Dendy Cinemas Portside.

A group of up to 20 Vietnam Veterans have become a regular fixture at Jetts Portside at Hamilton, working on improving their health... and showing their younger counterparts how it is done! The group first came together when the Veterans and Veteran’s Counselling Service (VVCS) got together a dozen veterans as part of its Heart Health program. Under the program the VVCS funds an exercise program for about six months in an effort to improve veterans health. The majority of the veterans did not know each other when the group started, but such was the comradeship that developed that after the initial six months the group elected to continue exercising together. Looking for a place to meet, the group was welcomed by Jetts Portside and, since moving to the centre, word has spread
and the group of a dozen has grown to 20 veterans, including a number of ex army officers, from a Major General down to national service Lieutenants rounded out by other ranks of privates to sergeants. The esprite de corp is evident to all others who attend the gym at the same time. The regularity of attendance for the two sessions per week is high with a few members coming early and on additional days. The group had pledged to continue to meet at Jetts for as long as they are able. Even members whose health does not allow exercise at all times, continue to turn up to share the comradeship, and the cup of coffee that inevitably follows each session. What inspirations!
