MISSION STATEMENT The aim of Portsmouth Abbey School is to help young men and women grow in knowledge and grace. Grounded in the Catholic faith and 1,500-year-old Benedictine intellectual tradition, the School fosters: REVERENCE for God and the human person Our conviction at Portsmouth Abbey School is that God is at the very center of the human search for meaning and that the perennial human questions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? How do I get there? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all find their answer in God. Accordingly, we seek to promote in the lives of our students a lifelong search for God as the beginning and end of their lives. This spiritual education of the heart, soul, and mind is the basis for intellectual and academic work at Portsmouth Abbey School. REspect for learning and order We believe it is vitally important to introduce our students to the classics and the best of the Western intellectual tradition, which includes both the humanities and the sciences. Portsmouth Abbey School develops the mind, heart and body through an integrated and ordered progression of learning in a structured environment. Our students are provided an excellent opportunity to discover fundamental truths, beliefs and texts that have challenged every generation since antiquity, and to develop an abiding love of learning. REsponsibility for the shared experience of community life We are committed to living as a community that values each of its members. Portsmouth Abbey School is inspired by a monastic presence and the Benedictine tradition of common life that includes prayer, study, work and recreation. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds while encouraging an appreciation for the Catholic faith. From the Board of Regents Chair

Our Catholic faith teaches us to persevere during challenging times. Over the past year we have been called to live that faith and we have grown closer and stronger as a community. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the monastic community, administration, faculty, and staff of the school, as well as my fellow Regents. All have devoted a great deal of time and energy toward ensuring a healthy and vital Portsmouth Abbey School. The school opened this Fall with 248 boarding students and 112 day students. Once again our School is full, and this year’s entering 3rd form joined us with the highest SSAT scores the Abbey has seen in recent years. Our development team continues to exceed all expectations, once again achieving a record year with the Annual Fund. As you will read in this report, not only were the dollars raised record breaking, participation of many donor categories broke records as well. Your Board of Regents continues to focus on strategic initiatives including our long-term plan for the next decade.

An exciting component of this is a new academic center that you will be hearing about in the coming months. In conjunction with the Board’s focus on the future of the school, we continue to pray for Monastic rejuvenation. We believe that the Monastery and the Benedictine ethos provide a foundation for our Catholic tradition and faith-based mission. Toward this end, Abbot Richard Yeo, President of the English Benedictine Congregation, has visited the Monastery many times over the past several months and has addressed the Board of Regents. I assure you that Abbot Yeo is focused on Monastic revitalization. He certainly shares in the Board’s belief that the Monastery is an invaluable asset to the spiritual life of the school. Portsmouth Abbey is vibrant and strong. Our students delight in welcoming alums back to campus. Please come and visit and experience firsthand the great tradition of Benedictine hospitality!

From the Headmaster

Thanks to you, every day at Portsmouth Abbey School brings with it the promise of something new. I write this at the beginning of the new school year, when we are always optimistic about the infinite potential of our students. And why not? With a wonderful faculty helping them to grow in knowledge and grace, our students truly have the best of both worlds. They are learning together, living together, competing together, performing together, and praying together. And so again: thanks to you. Your contributions and support in 2015-16 brought us to yet another record-breaking year for fundraising at Portsmouth Abbey School. For the third year in a row, our Annual Fund hit an all-time record high, fueled by increased participation levels from both alumni and parents. We received another planned gift this year, as generous alumni find creative ways to support the School through their estate plans. We also received gifts in support of capital improvements on campus and to our endowed faculty chairs and scholarship funds. This outpouring of support ensures that our School continues to be a leader in education as we fulfill our Catholic Benedictine Mission.

This continued growth is made possible by the many talented and devoted alumni and parents who serve as volunteers. Under the leadership of Chris Behnke ’81, P ’12, ’15, ’19, our Board of Regents continues to guide the School towards its second century. Phil Moyles ’82, our Annual Fund Chair, continues to provide valuable leadership for this important School initiative. Michael Anselmi ’97 and Judy and Emmett O’Connell P ’16, ’17 continue to lead our alumni and parents, respectively, to further our engagement and outreach efforts amongst these groups. Our successful fundraising efforts of 2015-16 mark the close of one year, and now we turn towards another new beginning with the start of the 2016-17 year. I encourage you to stop by Cory’s Lane and visit whenever you are in the area so that you can see for yourself how your philanthropic support makes an impact on campus each and every day. A native of Pelham Manor, New York, Teddy started thinking about boarding school during eighth grade. “I knew I wanted to attend an academically rigorous high school,” he says, and there was a family history: two of his uncles (classes of ’69 and ’81) and a cousin (’90) are alumni. “When I came to campus, I fell in love with the School. I could play golf, squash, tennis and get a fantastic education with a group of outstanding people.” He has thrived in this environment. Active in the Politics Club and the Youth Congressional Cabinet, he is editor of The Beacon. “I joined with a vision of growing the paper,” he says. “We’re covering much more than campus news now, increasing the quality, quantity, and diversity of the writing.” Teddy’s achievements as a student leader are remarkable given his 90% hearing loss since birth. Beginning at age two, Teddy studied speech with specialists at New York’s Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC); he credits early intervention and hearing aids with his success in a mainstream educational environment. “I was fortunate to have the support to overcome barriers, but many kids don’t have the resources to get hearing aids and learn language,” Teddy says. This summer, the Haney Fellowship for independent study supported his work at the CHC to help fit children with hearing aids, and to volunteer with the Hearing Loss Association of America’s head of advocacy during the national convention. “My goals for the Haney Fellowship were to produce real change; to provide solutions to those with hearing issues; and to study ways to provide less advantaged hearing-impaired kids with better, higher quality care,” he says. “It was rewarding to see advocacy at work at the convention, as well as to get some hands-on experience at the CHC.” After graduation, Teddy will join the ranks of Abbey alumni. “I look forward to watching the School become the best version of itself.” He believes that the faculty is the Abbey’s greatest asset. “They’re the backbone of the school,” he declares. “Teachers are so available, understanding, and willing to help, not only with academics. They’re the reason the Abbey has grown so much as an institution.” No doubt generations of alumni will agree. 12 |

Abbey Madness swept through our alumni community from March 17 through April 4 as a new initiative to raise money and promote awareness of the Annual Fund. Classes competed head-to-head in the ultimate alumni bracket challenge during this single elimination tournament in the style of NCAA March Madness. The class with the highest participation at midnight won each game and progressed to the next round, and a special challenge donor made a gift to the Annual Fund in the amount of the winning class at the end of the challenge. Abbey Madness began at the Union League Club in New York City on March 17, with a special kick-off event hosted by Annual Fund Chair Phil Moyles â&#x20AC;&#x2122;82. The first week of the challenge provided an opportunity for all classes to boost their participation, and the top eight classes in each bracket progressed to the next round for the single-elimination tournament. There were some very close matches, but the Class of 1964 rallied together and came out on top with an amazing 90% participation. Even as a prospective student, Ken felt an immediate connection during his interview and class visits. “I knew this was where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life,” he recalls. “Forty years earlier, my uncle had earned a scholarship,” he adds, “but daily transportation out to ‘the country’ wasn’t available so he couldn’t attend. My grandmother always regretted it. When I applied, perhaps it was her many prayers that I’d be accepted that clinched it!” Ken carpooled from Newport with several other day students, and enjoyed staying on campus for school projects. After graduating from George Mason University in Virginia, Ken settled there. He manages Republic National Distributing Company’s wine portfolio for Virginia and lives in the Richmond area. When he visits his Ocean State family every year, he makes a point of visiting the Abbey. “The drive down Cory’s Lane feels the same as ever,” he reflects, “but once through the gates, the new eco-friendly dorms, solar house and and Blu homes stand out! Today, 40% of the School’s energy costs are covered with the wind turbine and renewable energy.” Yet he believes his School’s essential distinctive qualities haven’t changed: “Respect for the individual student, nurturing relationships among faculty, administrators, and students, exciting classrooms, a diverse student body, a wide array of sports and extracurricular activities, and fun social activities continue to make Portsmouth Abbey the very best high school in New England.” Looking back, Ken attributes much of his growth to the Abbey. “My teachers had high expectations and great confidence in my ability, which has transferred over to my career working for a company that also believes in my ability to achieve superior results. I built leadership and interpersonal skills through so many rewarding experiences in sports and extracurricular activities. To be successful in the market, I continually adjust and adapt. The Abbey helped give me the tools for both personal and corporate success each and every day.”

Years ago, the Jacksons deliberated carefully when seeking an educational community for their family. “For any preparatory school, it’s difficult to balance the pursuit of excellence with a sense of proportion,” Beth says. “The defining attributes of the Abbey are its academic rigor and humility. We sensed this from our campus visit; the tour guide made eye contact, the students respected every single teacher, and the faculty and staff cared for the students as an extension of their family. By Parents’ Weekend of Karl’s first year, we realized how unique the Abbey is. The faculty and coaches do an outstanding job of cultivating humility, in an idyllic setting where young adults learn from true role models.”

Beth and Colin Jackson are happy to spread the word about Portsmouth Abbey. Their son Karl ’18 is in his third year, and Ian has enrolled with the class of 2020. The Jacksons are so inspired by their sons’ experience that they’re committed to supporting the school above and beyond tuition, with consistent contributions to the annual fund.

Colin, who teaches at the graduate level, is particularly impressed by the Abbey’s quality of teaching and curricular focus. “I’m acutely aware of the effort, care and love required for effective teaching. I continue to marvel at the level of energy the Abbey faculty injects into the classroom.” Last year he noticed one of Karl’s humanities essays on the kitchen counter. “As someone who grades essays myself, I was instinctively drawn to the sea of red marks on the essay,” Colin confesses. “I found I agreed with every one of Mr. Pagliaro’s comments, singling out awkward constructions, sloppy word choices, and the like. Our son is a bright student; it would have been easy to grade him on his drive and potential. Instead, Mr. Pagliaro pushed him to improve and reach his full potential as a writer.” Colin praises the Abbey’s purity of academic rigor. “Our students receive a liberal arts education that’s no longer available at the college level,” he says. “Our faculty expose them to the Western canon in its undiluted form. The students grapple with the likes of Dante, Augustine, Aquinas and deTocqueville and emerge with a mastery they assume others must share. The depth of math and science learning is equally strong. Only after they leave the Abbey will they realize the gift they’ve been given: unlike many of their peers, they’ll emerge from high school with a substantial, personal understanding of the foundations of Western civilization and thought.” The Jacksons encourage all Abbey parents to show their support for the School, with a gift. “Full parent participation in the annual fund is important to every school,” Beth says. “Regardless of the amount, contributing demonstrates a commitment to the values of the Abbey and the special investments needed to keep the School forward-looking.”

Class of 2016 – VI Form Gift In May, Members of the Class of 2016 celebrated the start of Commencement weekend with the VI Form Dinner at Ochre Court in Newport, RI. Headmaster Dan McDonough, alumni faculty, legacy families, and special alumni guests celebrated with them and marked the evening as the beginning of the next phase of their lives as Portsmouth Abbey School alumni. The evening began with time for mingling and photos on the lawn overlooking the Cliff Walk and the Atlantic Ocean, and then transitioned to a formal dinner program. Father Damian ’45 gave a special blessing for the Class of 2016 before dinner, and Chair of the Alumni Leadership Council, Michael Anselmi ’97, served as emcee. Alumni speaker, John Humphrey ’06, co-founder and CEO of Greycork, shared a few insights with the graduating class while also encouraging them to embrace their final days on campus. The evening also served as the culmination of the VI Form Gift campaign. The Class of 2016 raised $728.38 which was graciously matched by brothers John ’95 & Michael Anselmi ’97, bringing the total to $1,456.76 for the 2016 Class Gift. John and Michael have been involved with the VI Form Gift for several years, and their matching gift continues to inspire and encourage students to make their first gift to the School. Class Agents Emma Butler, Jon Campau, Claire Doire, Oli Jantz, Liam Kelly, Brandt Matthews, Rory O’Connor, Jocelyn Varieur, Maddie Villareal, and Sydney Welch had the pleasure of presenting their class gift to Headmaster Dan McDonough at the end of the evening. Special thanks to the class agents and all of the donors for their support of the School.

For Suzanne and John ’62 Reid, establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity with the School was a very easy decision. “We wanted to honor in perpetuity our good friend, Dom Damian, and help Aquidneck Islanders attend the photo by jennifer carter Abbey” says Suzanne. Adds John, “Father Damian is a man of integrity, a scholar, and an athlete. There are plenty of young men and women on our island with these same traits. Bringing them to the Abbey is a win for the student and a win for the School.” John and Suzanne established their gift annuity with highly appreciated stock which they bought from John’s employer early in his career. By using stock rather than cash, the Reids were able establish a guaranteed lifetime income stream for themselves at an attractive rate, obtain tax relief, and fulfill their charitable intent. “You can’t avoid capital gains if you are fortunate enough to have them” says John. “However, working with our accountants and the School, we were able to creatively construct a plan that is a win for our community, the School, and ourselves. What could be better?”
