PORTSMOUTH ABBEY SCHOOL MISSION Mission Statement Portsmouth Abbey School helps young men and women grow in knowledge and grace. As a Benedictine boarding and day school committed to excellence, we embrace the Catholic faith while nurturing reverence for God and the human person, love of learning, and commitment to community life. Vision Statement Catholic means universal, and we welcome students from all backgrounds, as Jesus was welcoming to all people. We affirm that each person is made in the image and likeness of God, and is endowed with inherent human dignity and infinite worth. We believe God is at the center of the human search for meaning, and the perennial questions asked by our students – who am I? what is goodness? how am I to live? – find their answers in God. We assist our students in their search for God as the foundation of their lives. We seek student growth in grace: the regenerative power of Christ that lifts hearts and transforms lives. “Love of learning and the desire for God” are joined in the Benedictine tradition. Love of learning is grounded in wonder, undertaken in humility, and fueled by the hunger for truth. Our students are called to a close reading of classic texts and critical engagement with the written word. Our research-driven science program enables students to be keen observers of the world around them. We foster engagement in fine arts and athletics as key dimensions of human excellence. Education in the Catholic intellectual tradition forms us in the things that matter: truth, goodness, and beauty. Our shared life of study, prayer, and recreation sustains a community characterized by friendship and joy. Called to live in mutual service to each other, we seek the growth of our members as individuals, while advancing the common good. I write to you as the School celebrates the opening of our 96th academic year. With 338 students representing 18 countries and 21 states, we are enjoying a robust enrollment as well as our highest number of boarding students in the last five years. With the term fully underway and in-person, I am thrilled to share the news that Portsmouth Abbey School is bustling with the hum of busy students attending classes, competing in athletics, dining in Stillman, worshiping in the Church of St. Gregory the Great, and gathering in their dormitories making memories that will surely last a lifetime. The Board of Regents approved and unveiled our new Mission and Vision Statement last spring, and as custodians of the Mission, it is a privilege to experience our students, faculty, and monastic community help young men and women grow in knowledge and grace supported by friendship and joy. This year we also welcome Mr. Matthew Walter as Acting Headmaster. Many of you are familiar with Matt through his role as Assistant Headmaster for Advancement in the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs. Through his work, and that of his team, the School exceeded goal for the 2020-21 Annual Fund for the eighth consecutive year. In addition to this achievement, we have also grown our endowment, offered the highest financial-aid award totals in the history of the School, and increased our enrollment for the current academic year; all of this in the midst of a global pandemic! None of this would have happened without the stalwart support of our many volunteers and donors. Your commitment to the School allowed us to steadily navigate the many challenges we faced with both faith and confidence. Looking back at last year, we learned not to take the small things for granted. As we look ahead to this year, please know how grateful we are for you and all of your continued support. From The ACTING HEADMASTER

Dear Portsmouth Abbey Community, The School’s new Mission and Vision Statement ends with a call for “a community characterized by friendship and joy,” one that is sustained by a shared life of study, prayer and recreation. It is in this spirit of friendship and joy that I write to you as Portsmouth Abbey School’s new acting headmaster. I am humbled and honored by this appointment to serve our unique Catholic, Benedictine, coeducational, boarding and day community of those who work, pray and play on Cory’s Lane. There’s no place like it in the world! The 2021-22 school year is upon us and it has arrived with the promise and opportunity that comes from great challenges. The legacy of coronavirus leaves ground to be made up both inside and outside the classroom, but with 124 new students across all four Forms, and a dozen new faculty and staff members who have joined a committed group of returning students, faculty, staff, and monks, we have the foundation in place to continue fulfilling our mission of helping young men and women grow in knowledge and grace. This foundation also includes a community of donors, chronicled in this report, whose support last year provided us with the resources to not only face, but ultimately overcome the year’s challenges, and to celebrate achievements that would not have been possible without it. Under the leadership of Chair of the Board of Regents Chris Behnke ’81 P’12 ’15 ’19 and Chair of the Annual Fund Phil Moyles ’82 P ’22, we surpassed our Annual Fund goal for the eighth consecutive year by raising $1,851,453 from 1,500 alumni, parents, parents of alumni, and friends of the School. Thank you! I also would like to express my gratitude to Chairs of the Parents’ Association Mary Beth and David Lohuis P’10 ’10 ’21 and a network of more than 200 alumni and parent volunteers whose dedication of time, talent, and treasure helped make these results possible. VOLUNTEER PROFILE

After celebrating her 10th Reunion, Grace (Popham) Hobbes ’10 reflects on her fondest memories at Portsmouth Abbey and why it is important for her to stay connected to the School through her role as a Class Agent.

GRACE POPHAM HOBBES ’10 Many of my best memories come from extracurriculars at Portsmouth Abbey; the Appalachia Service Project, Social Committee, athletics, and dorm life come to mind. I participated in the ASP for all four years, traveling in my Fourth through Sixth Forms. I enjoyed that it was a year-long project, not just one week of activity during spring break. We held dress-down days, bake sales, and other fundraising events that helped get us to a rural area in the spring where we did various projects on houses in the community. It was a great way to hang out with friends, as well as getting to know other members of the faculty that I may not have been able to otherwise. I never had either of the Michelettis in the classroom, but I was in their van for the trip, and they burned so many CDs for the ride that we did not have one repeat song. Thinking about it, being on the Social Committee was sort of similar to being a Class Agent. We met every so often to discuss activities on campus, but it often involved making decisions on behalf of the majority, recruiting volunteers to help set up, and getting participation.

I am motivated to stay connected to the School and to my classmates because of the lifelong friendships that started at the Abbey. Some of my closest friends now

are the ones I met at School. Our friendships have evolved to include significant others and children, which is so nice to see. Even some alumni from older or younger grades who I wasn’t close with in school are in my life now, and we often reminisce on different stories and perspectives on teachers or coaches. Every time I have an opportunity to use an Abbey banner in a photo at a wedding, my heart feels full. I chose to be a Class Agent to hold myself accountable in staying connected. I don’t always do the best job, but I understand that communication and connection are two-way streets, so if I want to keep in touch with someone or something, I have to put in equal effort to the other party. Being a Class Agent gives me the opportunity to give back and serve a community that helped shape who I am today. I choose to give back to the School through the Annual Fund because I want the School to grow and provide support to the areas with the greatest need.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

THOMAS X. LONERGAN ’71 My family moved to Aquidneck Island in 1963 when I was ten years old. My parents, who attended Mass daily, soon found Portsmouth Abbey. I had trained to be an altar boy while living in Quincy, Massachusetts and started plying that trade at the 6:30 a.m. Mass at the BVM altar. I soon met all the monks and several became close family friends. My mother frequently baked cakes and cupcakes for the monks and left them in the rear passageway between the kitchen and the monastery. She made them bespoke albs from “pure Irish linen” she bought from a fabric shop in Fall River.

My biggest asset in life has been my high school education. Everything I needed to be an actuary I learned at Portsmouth. Portsmouth gave me a thirst for knowledge that resulted in a well-rounded education. Many of my contemporaries tell stories of Father Andrew offering them breakfast pastries he took from the folds in his habit. Some of those stories are embellished by nocturnal encounters with skunks. However, one of the terms occasionally used to describe him was “ubiquitous.” A year or two after we settled in Middletown, RI, my father developed severe chest pains at the dinner table. I went to bed at my usual hour that night and emerged the following morning to find my mother and Father Andrew having coffee in our dining room. After I had gone to bed, my father’s pain persisted. My mother, fearing he was having a heart attack, rushed him to Newport Hospital. My mother called the Portsmouth Abbey School switchboard in hopes of finding a priest to administer the last rites. In those days the switchboard was in the Manor House. By this time, it was beyond the curfew, and the operator resisted my mother’s pleas to disturb the monastery. As luck would have

it, Father Andrew was there eavesdropping on the conversation. He immediately drove to Newport Hospital and gave my father the last rites. My father had emergency gall bladder surgery and recovered completely. About 25 years later my father passed away and Father Andrew came to his funeral, arriving a bit late. He sidled up to my mother and put his arm on her shoulder. It is easy to stay connected to the School because my classmates are a great bunch of men. When I connect with them, we have enjoyable conversations. Both my daughters went to Portsmouth, and I continue to have regular contact with many current faculty and the Development Office. I maintain a summer residence in Narragansett, which makes it easy to attend special events at the School. Attending reunions also keeps me connected to Portsmouth. I look forward to seeing my classmates, especially those I have not seen in a long time, and attending classes and seeing the faculty in action. I have done this many times as a parent and an alumnus, and the quality of the faculty always knock my socks off. I chose to become a Class Agent because I owe a great deal to Portsmouth Abbey. My biggest asset in life has been my high school education. Everything I needed to be an actuary I learned at Portsmouth. Portsmouth gave me a thirst for knowledge that resulted in a well-rounded education. When I meet someone new, I always have some connection with them that I can exploit to break the ice. My favorite part of being a Class Agent is talking to my classmates. I give back to the School through the Annual Fund because I want Portsmouth to thrive. I went to Portsmouth on scholarship and have had lifelong relationships with several of the monks, members of the staff and other faculty at Portsmouth.

DONOR PROFILE JOHN ‘MAC’ REGAN III ’68 P’07 For Mac Regan, philanthropy in the name of education is an inherited trait. “My parents were very focused on education, and they passed that interest on to my siblings and me,” he explains. And while Regan and his wife, Tracy, have long supported several educational institutions, none are dearer than Portsmouth Abbey.

The Corvus Society is a recognition and appreciation society that is comprised of individuals who, because of their belief in our mission of helping young men and women grow in knowledge and grace, have created a legacy at Portsmouth Abbey School through a lifetime of giving of their resources of time, talent, and treasure. Their gifts have totaled at least $1M and have positively impacted Portsmouth Abbey School and its ability to remain the world’s premier Catholic, Benedictine, coeducational boarding and day school. The society’s title holds special meaning for the Portsmouth Abbey community as Corvus is the Latin word for Raven. To offer some perspective on how he became one of the many members of this society, we have asked John “Mac” Regan ’68 P’07 to share his deep history with the School.

Portsmouth, says Regan, is an intrinsic part of the family’s story. His father, John M. Regan, Jr., attended Yale University with Thomas Van Winkle, who later became Father Leo and served as the Abbey’s headmaster in the late 1950s and again in the late 1980s. John, Jr. sent his namesake to the School in 1965. “My parents had six kids at home and my dad decided they needed a break,” says Regan with a chuckle. “I was the first to attend the Abbey, and my brothers Peter ’71 and Chris ’73 followed.” The tradition continued with Mac’s daughter Caroline who graduated from the Abbey in 2007. The Regans were drawn to Portsmouth by the School’s stellar academic reputation, notes Mac, and the School did not disappoint. “The Abbey was a hard adjustment for all three Regan boys,” he confesses. “It was much more rigorous than our public school had been. We were scheduled every minute of the day, and the monks ran the School like a monastery – we received a basic, traditional education.” Although the experience was challenging, it gave Regan a solid foundation on which to build; after graduating from the Abbey, he earned his B.A. at Boston College, his M.B.A. at Babson College and his M.A. in international business from The Fletcher School at Tuft’s University. And as he continued his academic pursuits, Regan also maintained his connection to the Abbey. “Initially, I stayed involved with the School through the Annual Fund, then that connection evolved into board work, including two terms as chair.”

Regan says his role on the board was rewarding, as it gave him an opportunity to help shape the future of an institution he holds dear. “I’m very proud of the work the board did during my time as chair. We worked hard to ensure a continuing monastic presence at the Abbey and improve the School’s physical plant, which needed a lot of work.” Among the highlights of his tenure: two new residential projects, the renovation of the church, the construction of the new academic facility and the turf field.

Respect and reverence for one another and for the community at large are critical to the overall health of a society, Regan maintains, and that’s something the Abbey understands.

By the time his daughter entered Portsmouth, Regan says, the landscape was markedly different. “When Caroline arrived, there were fewer monks, more international students and a much more luxurious physical plant than in my day, but the institution remains true to its core values: reverence, respect and responsibility.” Reverence and respect for one another and for the community at large are critical to the overall health of a society, Regan maintains, and that’s something the Abbey understands. “Members of the Portsmouth community do a good job of living those values and communicating

them to students,” he asserts. “The institution is very much focused on developing the whole person—socially, emotionally, athletically and academically. There’s an emphasis on traditional values and a commitment to community over oneself that I believe is so important.” Regan personifies that commitment to the health of the whole. In addition to giving generously of his time, he and his wife also regularly participate in annual giving, capital and special projects and endowment giving. “We’re particularly interested in scholarships, providing kids with opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have,” he observes. The couple believes deeply in the importance of philanthropic giving. “It’s incumbent on those who can contribute to do so,” Regan asserts. “Charitable giving is an important social responsibility for every citizen.” Regan is confident that any alumnus would be delighted with the Abbey of today, in its familiarity as well as its newness. Unfortunately, he says, many alumni from his generation aren’t aware of the institution’s growth and continuing success. He hopes that will change. “Students are performing at a very high level, the physical plant is remarkable, and Annual Fund giving is increasing exponentially, which reflects a lot of hard work on the part of the development team. “People need to take a fresh look at Portsmouth – I encourage everyone to visit the campus and engage with faculty and students,” he concludes. “The more you learn about today’s Abbey, the more you’ll want to help.”

On March 2, 2021, Portsmouth Abbey held its third annual Giving Day, a high-energy 24-hour period taking place from midnight to midnight centered around Abbey pride and philanthropy. This year more than ever, Giving Day focused on uniting the global Abbey community and was an opportunity for students, alumni, parents, and friends to demonstrate the strength and resilience of our community through their support of the Annual Fund. Our goal was to surpass $475,619, the one-day record total from the previous year’s Giving Day, and reach a minimum of 500 donors.

STUDENT PROFILE

TRUMAN CURTIS ’23 Wanting to learn more about the student perspective, we sat down with Truman Curtis, a Fifth-Form boarding student in St. Leonard’s House who originally hails from Norwalk, Connecticut, to find out how he landed at Portsmouth Abbey and what the experience has been like thus far. “I first heard about the Abbey through a friend who goes to the same church as me back home, and after letting people know it was a top option of mine for high school, I slowly started meeting others who were alumni and had so many good things to say about their time here. I even learned that one of my closest friend’s father (Class of ’85) also attended and was a prefect in my current dorm. My first real introduction to the Abbey was my Closer Look accepted-student shadow day. Sitting down for lunch with the current older students who were so funny and welcoming made me realize how enjoyable my time here was going to be. I also remember sitting in on some classes, including Ms. Benestad’s Latin class, which I thought were so lively and interesting. Prior to this, I had never seen such a community in which the students interacted with the teachers with such respect and friendliness at the same time. I felt like everyone knew each other really well – students and teachers alike. I have to admit, because of my passion for saltwater fishing, being able to live on the water was a huge draw for me. I even remember asking my tour guide the first time I stepped on campus if we could possibly walk down to Narragansett Bay. Besides the beautiful campus, hearing about our respected English and Humanities programs was also something that interested me so much. Those classes I heard about before ever coming here, such as Humanities and American Literature, remain my favor-

ites to this day. I would like to personally thank Mr. St. Thomas, Mr. McQuillan, Mr. Caplin and Ms. Smith for introducing me to these great books that are taught here. Also, I really liked our fitness center and brand-new science building, especially after being told there was a new marine biology class!” When asked what has been the most rewarding part of being a member of the Abbey community, Truman shared that it is definitely how much he has learned, especially in the classes that he struggled with before he came to the Abbey. “Being able to come separately to a conference period with a teacher or working with someone in my dorm, like a friend or prefect, really helps me succeed,” he explained. “There are many things I found surprising about living at a boarding school. The most surprising thing is probably learning about all of my friends’ backgrounds, especially international students, because we all come from such different places. I can gladly say I am close friends with people from China, Guatemala, Chile, Canada, France, South Korea, and more.”

When discussing some of the many opportunities the Abbey offers to its students, Truman remarked on those of which he has taken full advantage. “I am currently the vice president of my Fifth-Form class, and this year I started the Abbey’s first Wildlife and Ecology Club where we identify and learn about all sorts of flora and fauna. Some people may not realize it, but the Abbey has quite a bit of wildlife around if you look hard enough, from the belted kingfisher who lives down at the bay to the deer and turkeys we walk by on our way to class most days. We also live in a part of Rhode Island that is impacted by the endangered striped bass migration that takes place in the spring and fall every year. I am also a member of both the Mind and Market Investing Club and the Yoga Club.” Portsmouth Abbey is known for its academic rigor. When pressed to choose his favorite subject, Truman found it hard to pick. Ultimately, he decided on English. “This year I am taking American Literature with Ms. Smith as my instructor, and one of my favorite things we have been doing is breaking down some of the dialogue in Hamlet and focusing on Shakespeare’s wordplay. Ms. Smith also has been spending a lot of time centered on our writing and making us better writers. Some of the other books we are reading this year include Moby Dick and The Great Gatsby. My Humanities class last year was also the most memorable, even though it was a lot of reading and very challenging at times. The questions that the books brought up made for some very interesting discussions with my teachers and friends, which changed my perspective on life.” Truman was unaware of how many independent programs he could pursue until after he became a student here. One such opportunity is applying for a grant through the Science department for independent study. Truman expects to submit his application to the program later this year.

“In the spring, I plan to apply to and write about my future striped bass conservation program, Youth for Stripes, for submission to the Haney fellowship program in hopes that they pick me as one of their supported projects. I would like to spread awareness for a growing issue on our New England coast, which is the depletion of the striped bass fishery. I plan to use the funds to create a platform that spreads a goal for the catch and release of striped bass so we can do something to stop this depletion of what was once such a strong and world-class fishery. Lastly, I would love to do one of the School’s trips to Rome, Lourdes or Costa Rica. I have older friends who went, and it sounds really fun to be able to travel and learn with school friends and faculty while representing the Abbey.” We asked Truman if he fully knew what to expect of his time here at the Abbey before he came, based on how it was described to him. He told us his description of his experience would be so much richer than what was shared with him. “It is hard to describe to potential students what it is like to come here. Trying to explain a dorm snowball fight, the teachers, the hilarious dining hall conversations or the friends you make aren’t really things I can put into words easily. All I can say is that in my last two years here I have changed in ways that I would have never imagined, made the best of friends and discovered passions I don’t believe I would have discovered anywhere else. The teachers and students here help each other succeed, and the opportunities that are offered push people to be their best selves. I believe this School creates leaders and people who care about one another because of how we treat one another as a community. I think people who are considering coming here should know that the Abbey is not only academically and athletically top-tier, but what this School has as a community is pretty incomparable.”

SIXTH FORM CLASS GIFT This past May, the members of the Class of 2021 rang in the start of Commencement Weekend with the annual Sixth-Form Dinner at the Newport Beach House in Newport, RI. They were joined by former Headmaster Dan McDonough, alumni faculty, legacy families, and special alumni guests, who welcomed the Class as the newest Portsmouth Abbey School alumni. Upon arrival to the venue there was time for photos and mingling on the balcony overlooking the coastline. Following the welcoming reception, everyone was seated for the formal dinner program. Acting Headmaster Matt Walter served as the emcee for the evening, and the alumni guest speaker was Henry (Hank) Mullen ’11, who is an investment banking associate at BellMark Partners, LLC in Boston, MA. Hank spoke about his experience at the Abbey and his life and career path after graduation. His parting advice to the Class of 2021 was to maintain the relationships they have nurtured while at the Abbey, and he urged the Class to continue giving back.

The evening also served as the conclusion of the 2020-21 Sixth-Form Gift campaign. The Class raised $883.42, which was graciously matched by Michael Anselmi ’97 and an anonymous donor, bringing the total gift to the Annual Fund to $1,766.84. Michael has been involved with the Sixth-Form gift for a number of years, and his matching gift continues to inspire and encourage students to make their first gift to the School. Sixth-Form Class Gift Agents Augusta Ambrose, Delia Filippone, Laura Fink, Ben Kendall, Lucia McLaughlin and Sean O’Hara had the pleasure of presenting their class gift to former Headmaster Dan McDonough at the conclusion of the evening. 2020 Virtual Abbot’s Reception The internet was ringing with Christmas cheer with more than 170 friends and members of the Portsmouth Abbey community connecting on Zoom. The Abbot’s Reception, one of the School’s longest-standing traditions, made history in 2020 by celebrating this famed event virtually for the first (and hopefully last) time on Thursday, December 10. The evening included a performance by Sixth-Form musicians Cassiel ’21, Christine ’21 and Lily ’21. Under the guidance of Jeff Kerr, our director of music, they performed “Silent Night, Holy Night.” It would not be

an Abbot’s Reception without the inimitable J. Clifford Hobbins, who delighted everyone by reciting an Abbeyinspired reading of “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Our audience was invited to join a sing-along to Nat King Cole’s “Deck the Halls” while enjoying spectacular winter images of our campus by the bay. Before the evening concluded, guests viewed pictures from past Abbot’s Receptions while listening to “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” A sincere thank you to those who joined this virtual celebration.
