Dear Portsmouth Friends, More than any term, “partnership” is the word that comes to mind when I think about Portsmouth Abbey during the last year. The Board of Regents works with Abbot Caedmon and the Monastic Community to lead the School; we engage with Headmaster Jim DeVecchi and the faculty to steward the School; and we work collaboratively as Regents to draw upon individual abilities in service of our School. The pages of this 2011 Annual Report chronicle numerous dimensions of the past year; however, more than anything this document captures the partnership that exists among those working to help Portsmouth Abbey fulfill its Mission of Reverence, Respect, and Responsibility while striving to be an ever better School in the Lord’s service. A particular dimension of the partnership that exists at Portsmouth that I wish to highlight from last year is the Monastery and Board’s decision to establish the Monastic Renewal Program Office. There are many reasons I could cite for the faith that many of us have in the School, but the fundamental rationale is a belief in the foundation upon which Portsmouth Abbey is built. The underpinning of this base is clearly the Benedictine ethos that permeates Portsmouth and its people. The Abbey of Saint Gregory the Great and its resident Benedictine community are our bedrock. The monastic renewal initiative is designed to help the Monastery better tell its rich story and thereby strive to attract new men to the Benedictine monastic life. The initiative is being directed by David Moran ’71, under the guidance of Vocations Director Abbot Caedmon. I urge you to visit our new website (http://www.portsmouthabbeymonastery.org/) which describes some of the features of our Monastic Program. You will also enjoy the video links showing our Monastic partners in action. from the headmaster Dear Friends, My daily routine frequently has me at my desk in the Cortazzo Administration Building early in the morning. I cherish this time for the opportunity these hours provide me to clear my desk, but more importantly it offers me the chance to watch the campus wake up and to reflect on our daily efforts to help students to grow in knowledge and grace. Perspective is everything in life, and from my vantage point on the second floor of the Administration Building, looking north to the Abbey Church of St. Gregory the Great, Burden Schoolhouse and St. Thomas More Library, I am reminded daily about all that we in the Portsmouth Abbey community have, and have accomplished together, over the years. Although the vista to the north is different than would have been observed at earlier times in Portsmouth’s history, the east and west of our Holy Lawn are anchored with the core elements of Portsmouth Abbey – Faith and Reason, manifested by the Church of Saint Gregory the Great and the science center. These fundamentals are unchanged in Portsmouth’s story, and although the science building will relocate to a new location attached to the east end of the Burden Schoolhouse in the years to come, the balance of Faith and Reason will remain the pillars upon which girls and boys are educated at Portsmouth. The 2010-11 school year was no exception in our nearly decade-long story of institutional progress. The totals, lists, and letters that comprise this 2011 Annual Report provide the details of our work and those who made the achievements possible. I am honored and appreciative to lead a school that is worthy of such support. As many of you know or have heard me say, Deb and I were drawn to Portsmouth Abbey in the early 1970s because of Dom Andrew Jenks. He was a friend and mentor, impossible to replicate, and a very hard-to-follow act. There was no finer moment for me, or, I believe, for Portsmouth, last year than at Commencement when Associate Headmaster and Math Department Head Dan McDonough was appointed as the inaugural holder of the Jenks Chair in Mathematics. This act honored Father Andrew and his decades-long commitment to Portsmouth, recognized an exemplary teacher, and celebrated the pursuit of academic excellence on our campus. I am so grateful to all who made this endowed faculty chair possible. As I looked across the 107 faces of our 2011 graduates, saw the crowd of over 1,000 people gathered under our commencement tent on the Holy Lawn, and thought of my friend and mentor Father Andrew in May, I was again reminded of the special perspective I have in leading our School. There is a special place in the school world for Portsmouth and, because of this, a profound need for the education we offer. The efforts of many are making this work possible, and from my vantage point I am excited by the many positive and exciting things to come. I look forward to celebrating them with all parts of our Portsmouth constituency. Sincerely,

from the assistant headmaster for development The 2010-11 school year was yet another period during which Portsmouth Abbey saw aspirations transform into realities because of the generous philanthropy of alumni, parents and friends. Under the banner of Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign for Portsmouth Abbey School, campus enhancements are being aggressively pursued, long-term financial health is being augmented by endowment growth, and near-term needs are being supported by the Annual Fund. For all the School has been able to accomplish in partnership with the extended Portsmouth Abbey community, we say, Thank You!! Donations for the year ending June 30, 2011, were $4,575,390 and represented a 12 percent increase in cash gifts over the prior year. Total contributions (including cash and multi-year pledges) for the period July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011, equaled $6,442,911. For the sixth consecutive year the Annual Fund surpassed the $1.1M level. Financial support secured via the Annual Fund is significantly important to the School’s yearly financial balance. Every dimension of Portsmouth Abbey life is aided by the Annual Fund, and the vast majority of Portsmouth’s donors are participating in this undertaking. Last year, for the first time, the total number of Annual Fund gifts surpassed 2,000, and the number of alumni donors exceeded 1,000. These results equated to a two percent improvement in the rate of alumni participation and five percent growth in the rate of current parent participation (2010-11 was the second consecutive year that current parents achieved five percent participation growth). Beyond the bottom-line importance of the Annual Fund, these positive participation results are an important barometer of alumni and parent engagement with the School. Heading the list of objectives that became tangible realities in the 2010-11 year were: the start of construction on the new boy’s dormitory; installation of two environmentally friendly and highly efficient faculty homes on a site north of the Manor House; and the appointment of long-time faculty member Dan McDonough as the inaugural holder of the Jenks Chair in Mathematics, established in honor of Dom Andrew. Since July 1, 2004, Portsmouth Abbey School’s advancement efforts have focused on meeting the objectives established by Growing in Knowledge & Grace: The Campaign For Portsmouth Abbey School. The Campaign is concentrating on improving revenue balance, meeting critical facilities needs, augmenting the endowment, maintaining balance between building and endowment objectives, and achieving results that advance Portsmouth Abbey relative to its peer schools. The Capital Campaign presents the Monastery and School with the opportunity to implement the major objectives of the Strategic Plan ratified by the Board of Regents in September 2003. The physical plant priorities as laid out in the plan include: • Build additional detached faculty housing to attract and retain the best faculty, staff and administrators to the school. • Build new Girls and Boys Residential Houses to accommodate an increase in the boarding/day mix to greater than 70% boarding/30% day. • Add classroom space and improve (or build new) Science Center. In parallel with these facilities the plan requires that the School increase its endowment to support scholarships, faculty chairs, and to become less dependent on tuition as its primary source of revenue. The vision for the remaining campaign objectives include: • Further endowment growth, specifically targeted to support faculty and scholarships as well as ongoing efforts to increase all previously established endowed funds. • Significant enhancement of the School’s science facilities with the addition of a major new wing located to the east of the Burden Schoolhouse. • Continued Annual Fund growth and increased participation from Portsmouth Abbey’s alumni, parents and friends. The points above have driven the work at Portsmouth Abbey over the last several years and we have celebrated many successes. To date the Campaign has raised in excess of $37,500,000 for Portsmouth. Portsmouth Abbey School has accomplished much over this past year, thanks to the great support of the donors recognized in the pages that follow, donors who believe in the Catholic Benedictine Mission of Portsmouth Abbey and are committed to strengthening it. THE KOREA FUND Established in 2007, the Korea Fund recognizes the growing and increasing support from members of Portsmouth Abbey’s Korean community. With an aim to increase capital support, the Korea Fund has helped to fund the building of St. Brigid’s House as well as the construction of St. Martin’s, the new boys’ residential house, currently underway. Since its creation, capital funds to Portsmouth in the Korea Fund total $446,596. In addition, Annual Fund support remains a top priority and donations to the Annual Fund since 2007 total $143,748 placing the Korea Fund over $590,000. from the annual fund chairman To the Portsmouth Abbey Community, I am pleased to report that the Annual Fund reached $1,104,392 this year, despite adverse global economic conditions. We once again achieved 31% alumni participation, our standing benchmark, up from 29% participation in the 2009-10 fiscal year. As those who are loyal to our School and believe in its mission, we have a wonderful opportunity to increase the number of our loyal donors and the dollar amount that the Annual Fund contributes to the overall operation of the school. Currently, the Annual Fund contributes approximately 8% to the operating budget, which has been consistent over the past few years. The Annual Fund plays a critical role in helping manage tuition increases while providing needed revenue for scholarships, faculty salaries, student and residential life activities and critical needs of the school. Our vision for the Annual Fund is to reach the $2MM mark within five years to be competitive with other annual funds from boarding/day schools in New England such as St. George’s ($2.2MM), St. Mark’s School ($1.8MM) and Pomfret ($1.85MM). This will require us to think and do things differently than what we have done in the past and we possess the potential to accomplish this goal. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the generosity of our alumni, current and past parents and friends who continue to support the Annual Fund this year and every year. Besides the Annual Fund, the new Boys’ Dorm and the recent investments in faculty housing are other evidence of the steadfast loyalty and love for our school by our benefactors. We cannot maintain the special place that Portsmouth Abbey is without this welcomed and appreciated support. I thank all of you for your wonderful generosity. Finally, I encourage you to come back to your School as soon as you can. You will not believe the transformation that this beautiful campus has made in the past year. To see the new buildings, to enjoy the beautiful campus, to meet the students, to visit with teachers and the members of the monastic community, there is absolutely no substitute for visiting. Over the past few years we have made a concerted effort to make Reunion Giving a more prominent aspect of our fundraising initiatives. With the growing number of alumni celebrating their milestone reunions each year, this is a clear and logical area in which we can drive and increase both participation and dollars donated to the Annual Fund. In the fiscal year 2010-11 a record number of alumni from classes ending in 0’s and 5’s returned for a perfect New England weekend. From those classes, 220 alumni donated a total of $595,563 in support of Portsmouth Abbey’s unrestricted and restricted fundraising objectives. Of those donors, 206 made the Annual Fund their priority. My hope is that classes celebrating milestone reunions will continue to follow in these footsteps with both increased participation and donations. SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT Each year, Portsmouth Abbey School's Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament is played on the prestigious Carnegie Abbey Club's links-style golf course. The tournament brings together a wonderful group of Portsmouth alumni, parents, family and friends and they all share a great day of golf and camaraderie on one of the nation’s finest golf courses. The proceeds of the tournament go directly to fund scholarships for students at Portsmouth Abbey School, thereby making the benefits of an independent school education available to students for whom such an opportunity would otherwise be out of reach. In the ten years that golfers have gathered to swing their clubs for scholarships, the Tournament has raised a cumulative sum of over $260,000. The field of golfers prepare for the shotgun start of the 10th Annual Golf Tournament.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ABBEY! PARENTS’ AUCTION It was a night to remember, not only for the spirit of bidding in the room but, more importantly, for the spirit of community that was evident in so many ways. Parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends of Portsmouth Abbey gathered on Saturday evening, January 22, to show their support for the School and its Performing Arts Programs. Guests dined on a wonderful array of hors d'oeuvres while perusing the impressive collection of live and silent auction items, and auctioneer Steve McDonald (radio personality for WHJJ and WHJY in Providence) regaled the crowd with his wit and skillful auctioneering during a delectable gourmet dinner. Students involved in the Performing Arts Program dazzled attendees with a compilation of performances ranging from the a cappella group, the A Flats, which performed a lively medley during the cocktail hour, to musical selections by the Pro Deo orchestra and various student musicians. Guest were also treated to a preview vignette from the Abbey’s winter musical, The Sound of Music, with the grand finale

Headmaster James DeVecchi and Abbot Caedmon are pleased to announce St. Martin’s as the name of Portsmouth’s new boys’ residential hall, currently under construction on campus. Named in honor of Portsmouth’s longest-serving superior, Abbot Matthew Stark, Martin is Abbot Matthew’s baptismal name and is in keeping with Portsmouth’s tradition of naming residential houses for monastic saints. Having served Portsmouth’s monastic community as superior from 1967 to 1991, Abbot Matthew’s commitment to Portsmouth has been strong and steadfast. The new boys’ residence gives the Portsmouth community the opportunity to recognize Abbot Matthew for his leadership and guidance of the young men of Portsmouth as well as the institution. St. Martin’s joins the three interconnected boys’ houses named in honor of the patron saints of three monks who were very important in the history of Portsmouth Abbey. St. Leonard’s was named for Dom Leonard Sargent, founder of the Monastery; St. Hugh’s for Dom Hugh Diman, founder of the School; and St. Aelred’s for Dom Aelred Graham, who was superior of the Monastery for 16 years (the longest tenure at Portsmouth at that time) and under whom the Belluschi buildings began to appear. During Abbot Matthew’s time as superior the Classroom Building, School Library and Monastic Library were completed. We are pleased to honor Abbot Matthew with the use of his baptismal name, Martin, and to recognize the stability and commitment he has demonstrated to the Monastery, to God and to the School. Construction of St. Martin’s continues to make good progress and is scheduled for completion in early June 2012.
