Guy Grundy From homeless teenager to Mr. Australia, he’s a man who has done — and overcome — it all. By: Noah Williams
Guy Grundy is an Australian fighter turned bodybuilder turned actor turned director. Originally from Penrith, New South Wales, near Sydney, the man has a story that could be made in to a blockbuster movie. Grundy has gone from being an illiterate, homeless teen to a champion bodybuilder to an upand-coming actor and director with several roles in quite a few big-time movies. You may have seen him in some of the major muscle and fitness magazines, but you most likely don’t know the story of how he went from the streets to the first-place podium in the Mr. Australia championships and the second-place spot in the Mr. World competition. As a boy, Grundy had a very challenging life. His father left when he was young, and while his mother tried the best she could, in Grundy’s words, she was a bit “different.” Guy was on his own for the most part, lacking good role models and needing to fend for himself. At age thirteen he lacked the ability to read or write, but he was a star athlete in school and got himself a scholarship through his natural talent at sports. When he was about 16, the school learned that he was unable to read or write, something he remembers to this day as painfully embarrassing. At that point, Grundy decided he would teach himself to read and write — and he somehow managed to. However, learning to read and write solved only one of his problems. While still in high school, Grundy ended up homeless and living on the street.
page 17
As with so many champions, getting strong in the gym would become Grundy’s ticket to overcoming the obstacles in his life. At the time, his favorite physique was Sylvester Stallone’s in Rocky. To Grundy, Rocky was a big guy, and he inspired Grundy to get more serious about his training. Being interested in UFC-style fighting, Grundy embarked on some very intense training and eventually established himself as a serious fighter. You could say that Grundy had fighting in his blood. He might not have known much about his father, but he did know that he was a boxer, which might have been why he was so drawn to fighting. Another thing that influenced him to get in to training, he says, was the Terminator poster featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger wearing shades, baring his muscular chest in a leather jacket, and holding a gun. When Guy wasn’t in the gym sparring with the bag or a partner, he’d be off playing pickup games of rugby. (A modified version of football, played between two teams of fifteen members each, it differs from soccer in that you are free to carry the ball, block with the hands and arms, and tackle.) It is a continuous-action full-contact sport in which the players wear little, if any, padding. In other words, it was an ideal sport for a big strong guy like Grundy. Eventually Grundy got into bodybuilding in addition to his pickup rugby games and UFC fighting. At this point, he’d establish himself as such a good fighter — with deep knowledge of UFC-style fighting and heavy-duty basic training — that he was able to come over to America with a Green Card for being a person of extraordinary abilities. In the States, a brand-new chapter in Guy’s story started. And it started, not surprisingly, in the gym. His favorite bodybuilding moment in his career? Walking into Gold’s Gym in Venice, California, just hours after landing in America. “I will never forget that day,” Grundy told Ben Tater of CriticalBench.com. “I basically got off the plane at LAX and went to the Marina Pacific, where we stayed, and was at the Gold’s Gym doors at 3:50 a.m. waiting for them to open at 4 a.m. It is hard to put into words how it felt as no words can explain it. I worked so hard to win the Australia and overcame so many obstacles to get there. From the moment I picked up a weight I just knew that I belonged there. Every thought I had was of one day being there, so when it finally happened, it was amazing.”
Just walking around for hours in the Gold’s Gym in Venice was a dream come true. But that didn’t mean his dreaming was done and that there wasn’t a lot of work left to do. He hit the gym religiously and hard. The more Grundy trained, the more connections he made. He began getting more and more into bodybuilding and started winning major shows. Along the way, Grundy was able to meet and become friends with several big-name bodybuilders on the circuit, among them Chris Cormier, Craig Titus, and Mike Ryan, who more than lived up to what Grundy had imagined, “even though he was obviously crazy.” By this time, Grundy had found his true motivation: his daughter. He promised himself that he would always be there for her and that he would be a great role model. He would do everything that a father should do for his child, and nothing would turn him into the type of father that he had had — or, rather, didn’t have. Now well-established in the Los Angeles area, Grundy started acting, first in small-time roles and bit parts. Then slowly but surely he began getting bigger and bigger roles, finally getting cast in well-known movies. Things seemed to be going well for Grundy, but then some bad decisions he had made caught up with him. He had gotten involved in underground fighting and ended up in association with some bad people as an enforcer and collector. This wasn’t the path Grundy wanted to be on, but before he could get out and distance himself from these unsavory associates, he was arrested. “I was held on bail for over one million dollars, and looking at fifteen years to life,” Grundy says. “It was then that I turned my life around for my daughter — to protect her. I turned to God for help, and that day, by the grace of God, the cops let me off and drove me back to my house.” Since that day, Grundy has completely turned his life around. He continues his work in the movies and has teamed up to produce a Couples Training System with international fitness model and life coach Sasha Brown, who has an extensive show history with some very noteworthy placings. The system utilizes a man’s and woman’s strengths as training partners and has already produced some impressive results in the U.S. and Russia; it is now debuting in Australia. The system was born out of Grundy’s and Brown’s realization that they could create a program that maximized the training benefits of working out with a partner. “Sometimes you try so hard to get regular workouts and make healthy food choices, but if you don’t have like-minded friends, this can be pretty tough,” Brown says. “From many years I could do my workouts alone, but once in a while I need somebody who can push my limits and break my plateau.” Brown says she feels lucky to have found such a “butt-kicking” workout buddy in Grundy. “What am I getting from my workouts with Guy? First, extra motivation!” says Brown. “Sometimes I don’t want to work out, I’ll admit. By scheduling a workout with my partner, I feel like I’ve got a very important meeting that I can’t miss. And I have a spotter. Everybody knows: No pain, no gain. You have to lift heavy to grow muscles. Sometimes it’s more mental than physical that I can’t lift more weight. Working out with Guy, I feel like I have physical and emotional support.”
page 19
And, Grundy and Brown say, working out with a partner can bring much-needed variety to your workout routine. “There are a lot of good exercises that you can do with your partner that you might not be able to do on your own,” Brown says. Last, but not least, Brown says, Couples Training takes advantage of that all-important motivator: competitiveness. “Sometimes seeing somebody lifting heavier or doing more reps can bring out your competitive personality!” Imagine a training program that takes advantage of these bodybuilding bios: Guy Grundy: South Coast Division, Junior Place - 2nd, NSW Championships Division, Light heavy weights Place - 1st, South Pacific Titles Division, Light heavy weights Place - 2nd, Australasian Championships 1st National show Division, Light heavy weights Place - 2nd, Australasian Championships Division, Heavy weights Place - 2nd, Australasian Championships Division, Heavy weights Place - Champion, IFBB pro Qualifier Division, Open to all national champions Place - 2nd, IFBB pro Qualifier Division , Open to all national champions Place - 2nd, National Championships Place - Champion, World Championships Place 2nd, World Championships Place - 2nd, World Championships Place - 2nd. Sasha Brown: San Diego Bodybuilding and Figure championship in 2008. - 2nd place, 2008 NPC Max Muscle Natural - 1st place and overall, 2008 NPC Emerald Cup - 7th place, 2008 Muscle Beach International Classic and Armed Forces Championship - 1st place, 2008 NPC Junior California BB&Figure Competition - 1st place, 2008 Excalibur BB&Figure Championship - 3rd place, 2009 NPC Emerald Cup BB&Figure Championship 2nd place, 2009 Ukrainian Championship (Ukraine) - 1st place and overall, 2009 Sacramento NPC BB&Figure Competition - 1st place, 2009 IFBB World Championship (Italy, Como) - 9th place, 2010 IFBB Arnold Amateur International BB,Figure Championship – 4th, 2010 NPC Emerald Cup Championship - 1st place, 2010 IFBB Europa Championship (Slovakia) - 9th place.
Along with the Couples Training system, Grundy has worked closely with the military for fighting choreographies and to learn various military fighting styles. He has also been in several big shows and movies, including The Deadliest Warrior on Spike TV, CSI: NY, Shutter Island, The Lackey, and Almost Shark Proof. All the success could have gone to his head. But it doesn’t seem that it has. If you ask any of the people he’s worked with what they think of him, they all say the same thing: Grundy is a great guy. “Grundy has an amazingly big heart and is ready to help in any way he can,” says Arina Manta, a well-known fitness personality who has done various shoots with Grundy and counts him among her dearest friends. “He is a funny character; he makes me laugh. He is very direct, shameless, and he is driven, energetic, and crazy — in a good way. He’s got a great personality. Also I can say that, being from Australia as well, I do feel he is overprotective, watching out to make sure I’m not taken advantage of by people in the industry. He is always thinking to include me in any projects he has.” Manta says that as a newcomer to the U.S., she feels much safer in L.A. knowing she has Grundy as a friend. “I know he’ll be there for me.” Dustin “Sarge” Wilkins, an instructor in military tactics, jiu-jitsu, grappling, various fighting styles with weapons, is more familiar with another side of Grundy — the hardcore side. “He is very driven, and in my experience, one of the hardest-working actors I have ever met. He is a dedicated father to his daughter and a great guy to be around.” Soon, Wilkins says, Grundy will be obtaining his black belt in combat jiu-jitsu through Wilkins’ academy. “I believe his fans will see a whole new action star rise with his particular fighter style and action ability.” He certainly has the dedication to achieve it. Director Shaun Piccinino likes to tell a story about Grundy’s work ethic and ability to think on his feet. “Guy showed up to the [movie] set early in the a.m. for one of his big scenes in my film, The Lackey. We had started talking about the scene when he asked me about the script and said that he never received the scene. I was like, ‘What do you mean you didn’t get the scene?’ He had a big speech in this scene, so I thought our day was screwed. Long story short: Guy just improvised the speech and it turned into one of the most memorable scenes in the film.” I later found out that Guy had come straight from another job the previous night and hadn’t slept a wink before working on our film all day. Only Guy Grundy could pull this off!” Currently, Grundy has undertaken directing and acting in the lead role of his own feature film titled The Brawler, in which he’ll star along with Piccinino and Sasha Brown. Grundy won’t divulge too many details at this early date, but judging from his previous roles, this’ll be something to watch for.

Fitness model and NPC Figure Competitor Allison Taylor With her killer physique, exotic looks, determination and fun personality, Allison is inevitable to succeed in the fitness industry. This fitness model and NPC Figure Competitor recently landed an athlete sponsorship with ProFight, was awarded best legs in Southern California and is working towards earning her IFBB pro card this year. We got to spend some time with Allison and asked her to share some insight into her fitness world and how she started competing. Stats: Age: 26 Height: 5’4” Weight: 116-118 Hometown: Whittier, Ca Eyes: Green About Allison: I’m 26 years old, love living an active lifestyle and have been blessed with an amazing support group of friends and family. I’m a hard worker, pretty easygoing, optimistic and quite the goofball at times. Fitness has become a huge passion of mine. Although it became a much more of my passion within the past few years, I had always had a love for fitness and sports at a young age. Whether I was watching or playing, from as long as I could remember, no weekend went by without some sort of sportsrelated activity. It’s been a huge part of my life and has really shaped me into who I am today. I gained my appreciation for lifting in college and became a personal trainer at the gym in my hometown. I really wanted to share my knowledge and inspire others and this was the perfect job that would allow me to do so with the busy schedule of a full time student and track athlete. After college I continued to work out, but never saw any progress because of my unhealthy eating habits. I had watched a few friends compete in fitness competitions and was blown away by their progress and dedication. For some reason I was too stubborn to change my routine and never did anything until January of last year. This was when I had met my coach, Chris Lewis of Psychofitness and my world took a change for the better. Chris inspired me to stop being so stubborn in my ways, to learn how to train properly and to commit to living a healthier lifestyle. I was dedicated to learning and training with him to compete in my first NPC competition. When I got up on the stage the day of my competition I felt empowered and felt a feeling of accomplishment that I had not felt in such a long time.
page 30
I fell in love with the training, the results, and the lifestyle which motivated me to want to keep working hard, continue to live this lifestyle and to inspire others to do the same. Since then I have continued to dedicate myself to this living my best life through my passion of fitness, educating myself with more knowledge and making progress towards my goals every day. There is so much to learn and the great thing about fitness is that it allows you to test your limits 24/7, challenge yourself 24/7and to become physically and mentally stronger every day. Plans for 2013: I am very driven and have many goals that I’d like to accomplish. To name a few: I’d like to continue to motivate and inspire others, to someday be on the cover on one of my favorite fitness magazines, earn my IFBB Pro Card, to inspire through blogs, articles, workout DVDs, fitness modeling and to motivate and inspire others to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Competing has really changed my life and the least I can do is use my knowledge to make an impact on others. Fitness Competitions: • The Grand Prix 2013 BodyBuilding Championships - 8th Place Figure Class B • Border States 2012 Championships - 1st Place Figure Class B • MuscleContest.com 2012 Bodybuilding - 2nd Place Women’s Class C Bikini • California State Bodybuilding Championships- 12th place Women’s Class C Bikini • Mr. & Ms. Muscle Beach Venice, July 4, 2012 - 1st Place Women’s Figure Novice Short, 1st Place Women’s Figure Open, Overall Women’s Novice Figure , Overall Women’s Figure • NPC USA Bodybuilding Championships, July 27-28, 2012 • California State Bodybuilding Championships- 12th place Women’s Class C Bikini Motivation: With many distractions and temptations around us, it is difficult for some people to stay on track to reach their goals. For me, the 3D’s never fail to keep me in check: Dedication, Determination and Discipline. When getting ready for a show I often remind myself that in any given moment that I don’t give 100%, the other competitors will have more of an advantage over me. It is also key to plan and stay focused! Prep your food, plan your workouts, clear your mind of the negative, plan for success and most importantly believe in yourself.
Diet: Diet is key when it comes to training and it is true when they say that no workout can outweigh a bad diet. I always plan my meals ahead of time leaving me well prepared and with no excuses when I’m crunched for time during the week. I eat 6 meals every 2-3 hours that incorporate protein, veggies, complex carbohydrates and essential fats. One of my favorite meals to have on the go is my ProFight Whey Complex Protein shake. The chocolate is my favorite! Supplementation is also key and a few supplements that I include daily are: ProFight L-Glutamine Complex, ProFight Omega 3 and ProFight Amino Sports 4500. Fun Fact: I played soccer, basketball, volleyball, track, was involved in gymnastics and also was in dance... competitive Irish dance. Favorite Quote: “The difference between who you are & who you want to be is what you do! You’ve got to believe in yourself and you will achieve anything you put your mind to!” Go after your dreams, be open to change and set no limits. Favorite Type of Workout: As a former soccer player and track and field athlete, I am a huge fan of HIIT cardio. It always challenges me and leaves me feeling great when I’m done. Regardless of what muscle group I am training I love to lift and really enjoy working my legs and back. SARAH VARNO I was born in New England Massachusetts. It was great growing up in the North - especially since I love to be outdoors. I’m kind of a girly tomboy. I enjoy doing all the stuff that typically guys only do, but at the end of the day I’m looking for the nearest spa to be pampered. Looking back, I remember having more guy friends than girlfriends. My hobbies were playing sports - LOTS of sports! I was MVP on all my teams, you could say I was a little jock! I also loved playing outside on my bike as a youngster, making forts in the woods, playing tag, etc. Dinner was at 5pm and we all ate as a family. My childhood years were great because I had foundation from both my parents and was always taught not to quit. I have “almost” no regrets about my life.

After graduating from high school I studied Graphic Design at a local college, which I’m STILL PAYING FOR!! I decided to do a little modeling to help me pay for college so I began doing fitness and swimsuit modeling. I also entered some weekly bikini contests online.
I usually won 1st or 2nd place, which seemed to help my exposure. Those things combined got me interested in modeling, and also gave me the confidence to do it. It wasn’t until 2004 when I started meeting other models and shooting with high end fitness photographers. Ultimately, I would shoot with some of the best photographers in Los Angeles, and Florida
I was published MANY times in various men’s magazines and finally decided that the internet was the place for me. It’s been a wild ride from 2002 till now!
Shaik Moyeenuddin Words straight from my heart... My motivation Being a HR professional and working for 9-10 hours a day it was tough to think about my body. I could not sit on the ground because of my ever growing waist and my body was wearing out. I had to buy next size pants every time i went shopping, until I decided to join Goldsgym, HSR layout in June 2012. since then my approach towards fitness, muscle building and ‘looking good’ has changed drastically. My pictures before joining Goldsgym and current ones speak by themselves. I have become a ‘Slave to the gym’. I now consider my body as my temple and worship it by taking care of it and keeping it clean by eating clean. Wonderful equipments, spick and span gym facility and warm looking faces at the Goldsgym have helped me reach where I am today. Come 2014, I’m sure I’ll be gracing few fitness magazine covers being a muscle model.

My message Guys it’s not only about weight loss, it’s also about looking good, building strength, conditioning the body, having the courage to go topless, building a dream physique with symmetry and making the eyes turn on you. What a useless person he is if one can’t achieve what the body is capable of? I’m up with an inspiration to have a dream physique to hit few fitness magazine covers and inspire others during this journey of my ‘looking good’.
