TALKING WITH GUY CISTERNINO AND BETHANY WAGNER Most of you recognize our cover athletes this month. Both have been around the sport for a few years and both have a large fan base. On top of that Guy Cisternino and Bethany Wagner both competed at the Europa Super Show in Dallas a few weeks ago. Being a big fan of Guys I had to see if maybe I could get the both of them in the magazine and to learn a little more about each of them and them as a couple. PD: I really appreciate you both taking the time to visit Posedown Magazine. How old are the both of you and how long have you been competing? GC: I am 28 years old and competed in my first show August 2003, so I have been competing for 7 years. BW: I am turning 30 in October!!! I competed in my first show in May 2005. PD: Geeze, Bethany your getting old. {Lauging} How did you two meet? What are your future plans as a couple? GC: We actually met through mutual friends Kris Lecomte and Jen Smythe both are national level competitors. We met at a gym 2 years ago while she was dieting for the AC pro show and myself for 2008 Nationals, and have been together ever since. She’s competing in the Olympia at the end of Sept, we are getting married Jan 7, so there’s a lot going on with us. She is my back bone in everything I do and we have a great future ahead of both of us. BW: We also just bought a house and we are trying to get the new stuff for it—new fridge, dishwasher, couch, dining room table, bed, bedroom furniture etc. I start school soon, I already coach gymnastics, my niece is being Christened and I am the Godmother. Then we are going to Vegas for the Olympia. September is very a busy month! PD: Bethany, congrats on your first pro win at the Europa in Dallas, what do you think was main ingredient to your win? BW: Time and Experience. I have been told I have great structure and symmetry, but I needed a few years to gain confidence and muscle maturity. Winning the physique round is what secured my win in Dallas. I think another important ingredient is the support from my family, friends, and fiancé. They are my biggest fans. Guy is more than I could ask for. He gives me confidence, makes me proud to be on stage, and his knowledge of dieting and training has played a huge role in my success. PD: Guy, you may not have won the Europa show but you made a statement of your own in the ultracompetitive 202 class! How did you feel about not only the Dallas show but the Hartford show too? GC: The Hartford show I was less than pleased with how I looked. I was working with Neil Hill, and we tried some things at the end when I was carbing up that did not go in my favor. I ended up spilling over badly and looked completely washed out and watery on stage. For the Dallas show I ran things by Neil and told him what I thought we should do based on how my body responds to water, carbs, and sodium. He agreed with my thoughts and ended up coming in 5lbs lighter with my signature condition that I am known for. I was content I was top 5 but far from pleased. Bodybuilding is a sport and you won’t ever hear me say I’m happy until I win the 202 show down in Vegas! PD: You told me after prejudging that you needed another 10 pounds to really compete with the best in this class. Did you think you needed more muscle than you really did when you started dieting or were you just ready to compete again? GC: Well, after I turned pro I spoke with Steve Wienberger and he made a bold statement that I kept in the back of my mind while I was in my offseason, he said, don’t be afraid to throw the first punch. Meaning don’t be one of those guys who turns pro and takes forever to compete, but then again don’t be one of the guys that turns pro that thinks he can jump in the mix from the get go. He was right! A lot of athletes do one or the other and the outcome is always unpleasant. So taking 18 months off I knew I put on some good size but I wouldn’t know really what I put on until I dieted down. SO I thought 18 months was sufficient and I ended up packing on 10lbs of stage muscle in that time, which shown to be good but not enough to hang with those guys. I always knew I wasn’t going to be the biggest my first outing as a pro, that’s why I knew I had to be diced.
PD: Other than “needing another 10 pounds” what improvements do you need to make before you go on stage again Guy? GC: I am my WORST critique, I need rounder delts, bigger overall arms, wider and thicker back, although my legs are my best body part I need them bigger with a better outer sweep. If I get all that then maybe I’ll be happy. PD: Yeah Guy, I think you are being a little rough on yourself. You make yourself sound like an amateur. How does it work for the two of you when you are both dieting at the same time? GC: We both eat similar when we diet, just portion sizes are different, so it’s not that bad. There are times when she cooks for me or I cook for her. We are always cooking a lot of food at once so we always make sure the other has enough as well. BW: {Laughing} We don’t talk! We mainly just text. But it’s not that bad. We cook for each other, help weigh out each other meals, etc. Like Guy said we eat the same basic foods just he eats a lot more than me. PD: Who do you each work with on your training and nutrition? GC: After my outings this year, I chose to go in a different direction. Neil is GREAT in all aspects of bodybuilding, but to me him living in the UK at the end, took a toll on me. It’s hard the day of the show sending someone pictures and having them advise you what to do from them, especially when I don’t know my body to a “T” yet, it was a struggle for both him and I. But we are still very close and I still talk to him on a weekly basis. I met up with Fakhri Mubarak after the shows and he was very optimistic and excited to work with me. He thinks I have a great physique with a ton of potential, and he’s the next state over in Queens, so it’s not that bad for me. BW: I work mostly by myself. I bounce ideas off of Guy. I will diet and cardio myself to a twig if he doesn’t tell me to stop. He makes sure I’m eating enough and keeps my weight in check. PD: Bethany, what do you feel you need to do to win the Olympia in a few weeks? BW: Wow what a thought! I truly believe I can be top 3 or 4 in the physique or 2-piece round. I am really excited about my routine for the Olympia but this is the round I have struggled in and will be key in my placing. It is my first Olympia so I just want to have a good solid showing. All I can do is bring my best physique and best routine. Adela Garcia, Trish Warren, and Tanji Johnson I feel are the girls to beat. However, I know deep down 1st place goes to the most complete package that day. PD: After watching Bethany for while now, are you a fitness expert or are you just a fan of hers? Do you ever give her your input? GC: I am far from an expert but I know way more than I did 2 years ago. I know about strength moves and what to look for both good and bad in routines. She’s good about explaining it to me because she has an 18 year background in gymnastics, so when we first met I didn’t know crap about fitness. I give her input with her dieting and cardio, as for routine stuff all I can say is that I am pretty good with picking out songs for her.
PD: When your not dieting and competing what do you two like to do? GC: We both don’t have a lot of down time with our jobs, so when we do we like to go out to eat, hang out with friends, or just relax in the house and have some “us” time which never happens. BW: Eat. Cook. Guy is the chef and I like to bake desserts. We go to movies a lot. But relaxing on the couch and enjoying some down time together is the best.
PD: Bethany, I have talked to a lot of frustrated figure girls the past year that are making the switch to fitness due to the number of girls in figure and the randomness of the judging. Have you noticed an influx of new fitness girls up in your part of the country? PD: Bethany, I have talked to a lot of frustrated figure girls the past year that are making the switch to fitness due to the number of girls in figure and the randomness of the judging. Have you noticed an influx of new fitness girls up in your part of the country? BW: There have definitely been more competitors which is great for fitness. There is a misconception that you have to be a gymnast to compete in fitness. That is FALSE!!! The reigning Fitness Olympia (Adela Garcia) has no gymnastics training, neither does Trish Warren, and Tracey Greenwood—and they have been in the top circle of competitors for years! I think girls are realizing that—at least I hope they are. The routine should showcase your strengths and flexibility— many choose to do this through gymnastics moves. PD: Guy what are your thoughts on the 202 class now that it has solidified itself in the IFBB? Anything, stand out to you about it? GC: I think this class is going to be just as big as the open if it’s not already. We have a huge fan base and the competition is top notch. I think big things are going to come in the near future with this class. This class isn’t just about mass, it’s about the complete package, being a mass monster in this class with no condition or lines gets you no where. We are coming up the ranks and when they make it the 202 Olympia we will have made our statement final in the IFBB that we are here for good! I have to agree with you Guy, I have been a huge fan of the 202 class since it began! Thanks for taking the time to visit with us and good luck to both of you not only on stage but in life also!
