The London Fashion Week is starting to affirm itself as one of the appointments that cannot be missed for discovering new designers, but is also the stage chosen by renown brands for the presentation of their women’s collection, Like Burberry, Vivienne Westwood, Mulberry, Paul Smith and Antonio Bernardi.

La London Fashion Week inizia ad affermarsi come uno degli appuntamenti da non perdere per la scoperta di nuovi designer, ma è anche il palcoscenico scelto da marchi affermati per la presentazione delle loro collezioni donna, come Burberry, Vivienne Westwood, Mulberry, Paul Smith, Antonio Berardi.

+ I don’t remember precisely the first Milan fashion show I went to. My mind focuses on a series of events and sensations all related to when as a university student. Between exams I ran from my Romagna everytime another fashion week was held in the Lombard city and once I was there I tried to sneak in the exhibition, to get to know as closely as possible that world composed by press, experts and V.I.Ps that accompanied Milan’s Fashion.
+ Non ricordo di preciso la prima sfilata a Milano cui ho assistito, la mia mente si concentra su una serie di eventi e sensazioni tutte legate a quando da studente universitario, fra una sessione di esami e l’altra, scappavo dalla mia Romagna ogni volta che nel capoluogo lombardo si teneva un’altra settimana della moda e lì cercavo di intrufolarmi nella vecchia fiera, conoscere da vicino il più possibile tutto quel mondo di giornalisti, esperti del settore e vip, che accompagnavano la moda milanese.
In the beginning, I admit it, I was attracted by the supermodels. Not only for their beauty, but the glamour aura that surrounded them, Hollywoodian, you might say, almost timeless. I was hopelessly lost in the pictures that Steven Meisel took for Vogue Italia, and I watched speechlessly as Linda Evangelista went through chameleontic transformations in front of the camera. It was exactly like when, as a kid, I studied the single frames of American musicals and kolossals of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, the ones with Adrian or Edith Head’s costumes.
All’inizio, lo ammetto, ad attrarmi sono state le supermodel. Non solo per la loro bellezza, ma per questo alone di glamour, quasi holliwoodiano, quasi d’altri tempi, che le circondava. Mi ero perdutamente invaghito delle foto che Steven Meisel scattava su Vogue Italia, e guardavo a bocca aperta i camaleontici cambiamenti di Linda Evangelista davanti alla macchina fotografica, esattamente come da bambino studiavo i fotogrammi delle pellicole musicali e dei kolossal americani degli anni trenta, quaranta e cinquanta, quelli dove i costumi erano di Adrian o Edith Head
Following the models, like a groupie would follow a rockstar, I began to get passionate about the shows. At the time there still was the “pit” for photographers, that surrounded the catwalk, and it was exciting to slide in there. You could breathe in the event almost as a protagonist, and the show became pure magic. And in all these years that magic never faded in my eyes. Maybe compared to other fashion capitals, in Milan you don’t have Las Vegas-like shows, but it’s always exciting to be in the room, observing who arrives. The students that sneak in, exactly like I did at their age, the important directors in the front row, and international fashion figures that always have a certain charm, if it’s the extremely elegant Hamish Bowles rather than my idol, Grace Coddington.
Seguendo le modelle, come una groupie seguirebbe una rockstar, ho iniziato ad appassionarmi alle passerelle. All’epoca c’era ancora la ‘buca’ dei fotografi, che circondava il catwalk ed era emozionante infilarsi lì, si respirava l’evento quasi da protagonisti, e la sfilata diventava pura magia. E in tutti questi anni quella magia non è mai scomparsa ai miei occhi. Forse rispetto ad altre capitali della moda a Milano non si producono show che assomiglino a spettacoli modello Las Vegas, però è sempre emozionante trovarsi in sala, osservare la gente che arriva, gli studenti che si intrufolano, esattamente come facevo io alla loro età, i direttori importanti in prima fila, i personaggi del fashion system internazionale, che esercitano sempre un fascino particolare sul sottoscritto, che sia l’elegantissimo Hamish Bowles o il mio idolo Grace Coddington.
The atmosphere that you feel is the one of a rite, a pagan ritual where you celebrate the Style God. And when the lights go out and the music starts I remain mezmerized. The frenetic world that was there just moments ago, the workers that were still attaching the letters of the stylist’s name at the end of the catwalk, the ones that had to take the tarpaulin off them to avoid the crowd getting them dirty, the guests that pushed one another and the others that looked for their own spot in the dim atmosphere. All the sounds and movements stop as if by magic, and the world comes to a halt. The wait is for what is new, of what will be, the creative proposal of the stylist that journalists and trend setters will be ready to register, criticize, propose. But the excitement of that moment suspended in time, that emotion so intense multiplied by many shows, to this day, for me became a profession, makes the participation to a fashion week a unique experience.
L’atmosfera che si avverte è quella di un rituale, un rito pagano dove si festeggia la divinità dello stile. E quando si spengono le luci e inizia la musica io rimango incantato, il mondo frenetico di un attimo prima, gli operai che attaccavano ancora le lettere del nome dello stilista in fondo alla passerella, quelli che dovevano togliere dalla stessa il telone che impediva al pubblico di sporcarla, gli invitati che si accalcavano e quelli che cercavano il proprio posto nell’atmosfera semibuia, tutti questi rumori e movimenti cessano come d’incanto e il mondo sembra fermarsi per un secondo. L’attesa è quella del nuovo, di ciò che sarà, la proposta creativa dello stilista che i giornalisti e i trend setter saranno pronti a registrare, criticare, proporre, ma l’eccitazione di quel momento sospeso nel tempo, quell’emozione così intensa, moltiplicata per tante sfilate, ancora oggi, che per me è diventata una professione, rende il partecipare ad una fashion week un’esperienza unica!

New York City Fashion Week

+ It’s that time of the year again, as the world’s fashion elite begin trickling into New York, for Fashion Week. It’s the Olympics of the fashion world, and unlike the sporting one in London that just ended, no one here will work up a sweat, or get wet...unless it’s on trend for a new look. During the summer New York is relatively quiet on the fashion front, as many models, and industry professionals are away at the other major show weeks. Everything starts to shift around mid July, as preparations start for the September shows here. To anyone not connected to fashion, or paying close attention, nothing much will seem out of the ordinary. There are no epic billboards, commercials, or news features that build hype, and excitement. However, from my little corner, one of the most obvious signs I’ve noticed, is the significant spike in beautiful models around the city. You see them everywhere, from Subways to Deli’s, like an army of angels, carrying books emblazoned with their agency names, as they rush to and from castings. Emails to agencies take a bit longer to be responded to, as bookers begin to coordinate model arrivals, and scheduling. Invites start to go out, parties are planned, show cards are created, and fashion events are coordinated across the city, and in every neighborhood. All of this for an 8 day event, beginning Sept 6th. There will be no Queen jumping out of a Helicopter, with James Bond, but Anna Wintour will definitely reign supreme for Fashions Night Out. As for me, I look forward to attending a few shows, and shooting a few beautiful boys, before it all ends on the 13th.
+ E’ di nuovo quel momento dell’anno, in cui l’elite mondiale della moda comincia a versarsi a New York per la Fashion Week. Sono le olimpiadi del mondo della moda, e al contrario di quelle sportive a Londra che sono appena terminate, qui nessuno suderà, o si bagnerà... a meno che non sia il trend per un nuovo look. Durante l’estate New York è relativamente silenziosa sul fronte della moda siccome molte modelle, e professionisti del settore partecipano alle altre fashion week principali. Tutto comincia a spostarsi qui più o meno attorno alla metà di Luglio, in concomitanza con la preparazione per gli eventi di Settembre. Per tutti quelli che non sono connessi alla moda, o che non prestano particolare attenzione, le cose non sembreranno troppo fuori dall’ordinario. Non ci sono insegne epiche, pubblicità, o apparizioni nella stampa che montino l’attesa o l’eccitazione. Tuttavia, dal mio piccolo angolo, uno dei segni più ovvi che ho notato, è il significativo picco di bellissimi modelli per la città. Li vedi ovunque, dalla metropolitana ai ristoranti, come un esercito di angeli, che trasportano book decorati con i nomi delle loro agenzie, mentre si precipitano da un casting all’altro. Le email alle agenzie impiegano un pò più tempo a ricevere risposta, in quanto i brookers cominciano a coordinare gli arrivi dei modelli e la loro pianificazione. Cominciano a girare gli inviti, le feste vengono organizzate, vengono create le pubblicità ed eventi vengono orchestrati in tutta la città ed in ogni quartiere. Tutto questo per un happening di 8 giorni, che comincia il 6 Settembre. Non ci sarà alcuna Regina che salta fuori da un elicottero con James Bond, ma Anna Wintour indubbiamente regnerà suprema nel Fashions Night Out. Per quanto mi riguarda, non vedo l’ora di partecipare ad alcuni show e di fotografare un paio di bei ragazzi, prima che il 13 finisca tutto.

+ Ready...for five crazy days of madness, back and forth from one venue to another one; steady...to strike a pose for the usual bloggers outside the shows (oh, only if you want to be asked to do so)...and go! London fashion week is on your doorstep and you better know where to head with your well heeled feet. The first day kicks off with Antoni & Alison. Celebrating their 25th year in the industry, the label is strong with its own independent history, always keeping a quite low profile, never flirting with the big press guys and constantly producing brilliant collections that have a proud multicultural british heart. Turkish but London adopted Bora Aksu shows off his victorian inspired collection then to finish the day with beauty, Jean-Pierre Braganza are the shows to keep an eye on on the first day. Saturday at the Somerset House the guys from Sibling will present the women’s line from their label, Sister by Sibling. And we can bet the collection will feature the same kinky attitude that characterize the menswear line, that makes you wish so badly to own one of their knitwear pieces. J.W. Anderson is also on schedule for the day, the young designer is nurturing a strong well deserved fan base with his clean, witty and almost unisex style. Plus Moschino will show for the second time here in London how cheap (ah ah) and chic fashion can be. But above all Fashion East is the event to attend, if you are lucky enough to get in! For ten years MBE Lulu Kennedy the fairy god mother of all the now famous designers, has chosen, protected and nurtured young designers that always have something fresh and appealing to show. This year it is James Long, Marteen van der Horst and Marques’Almeida. Sunday will be a very busy day with simply too many names to watch, from Preen to the ultra cool East London much loved Acne. Christopher Raeburn became a fixture name at the Portico show space and is always a pleasure to see what this brilliant designer pulls out year after year with his innovative and functional style. Jonathan Saunders winner of this year’s Vogue Fashion Fund will mesmerise us again with his sophisticated aesthetics and prints. Mad hatter Philp Treacy will show us new wonders of craftsmanship as the day come to a close. The next day, again, so many designers to see, but hey, that’s what the web is for right? The guys from Peter Pilotto will bless us with their bold and intricate prints as the morning goes on with the enchanting Antonio Berardi, Erdem and that genius everyone is waiting for... Christopher Kane and his personal and brave vision that will spark trends straight away. In the evening Richard Nicoll will please us, followed by Giles and his stunning creations. London fashion week’s last day will see the newest designer that are attracting more and more crowds in their shows. After a very successful and much admired collection, duo Meadham Kirchhoff will take us on one more of their magic trips. Simone Rocha will prove again that she’s one of a kind, regardless of the name. Scots designer Holly Fulton will catch us with her graphic prints and luxurious fabrics and statement accessories. Last but not least the Fashion Fringe shows, young and talented designers that deserve more than anyone our attention and support as they are sure to be the next big thing in the fast forward moving fashion world.

La London fashion week è alle porte e sarà meglio che sappiate dove dirigervi sui vostri piedi ben dotati di tacco. Il primo giorno parte con Antoni & Alison. Celebrano il loro 25esimo anno nell’industria, il marchio è forte con la sua storia indipendente, sempre a mantenere un profilo piuttosto basso, mai a flirtare con i nomi grossi della stampa e sempre a produrre collezioni brillanti che hanno un fiero cuore britannico multiculturale. Turco ma adottato da Londra, Bora Aksu espone la sua collezione ispirata dallo stile vittoriano successivamente per finire la giornata in bellezza, JeanPierre Braganza. Questi sono gli show da tenere d’occhio il primo giorno. Sabato alla Somerset House i ragazzi della Siblin presenterà la linea da donna della loro marca, Sister by Sibling. E siamo pronti a scommettere che la collezione offrirà la stessa impronta spinta che caratterizza la linea maschile, che ti fà desiderare ardentemente di avere uno dei loro pezzi a maglia. J.W. Anderson è un altro nome in programma per la giornata, il giovane designer sta allevando una forte e ben meritata fan base con il suo stile pulito, intelligente e quasi unisex. Inoltre Moschino sarà presente per la seconda volta qui a Londra, la moda sa essere davvero chip e chic. Ma sopra ogni cosa Fashion East è l’evento a cui presenziare, se siete abbastanza fortunati da riuscire ad entrare! Per 10 anni MBE Lulu Kennedy la fata madrina degli odierni designers di successo, ha scelto, protetto e accudito giovani designers che hanno sempre qualcosa di fresco e accattivante da presentare. Quest’anno è James Long, Marteen van der Horst e Marques’A lmeida. Domenica sarà una giornata fitta e impegnativa che avrà semplicemente troppi nomi da vedere, da Preen all’amato dall’ ultra cool East London, Acne. Christopher Raeburn è diventato un nome fisso nello spazio espositivo Portorico ed è sempre un piacere vedere cosa tira fuori dal cilindro anno dopo anno questo designer brillante con il suo stile innovativo e funionale. Jonathan Saunders vincitore del Vogue Fashion Fund di quest’anno ci strabilierà ancora con le sue sofisticate stampe. Quel cappellaio matto di Philip Treacy ci mostrerà nuove meraviglie di artigianato mentre la giornata volge al termine. Christopher Kane e la sua coraggiosa e personale visione che farà scoccare immediatamente la scintilla dei trend. Nella sera RIchard Nicoll ci delizierà, seguito da Giles e le sue stupende creazioni. L’ultima giornata della London Fashion Week vedrà i designer più nuovi che stanno attirando sempre più pubblico nei loro show. Dopo una collezione di gran successo e molto ammirata, il duo Meadham Kirchhoff ci porterà ancora una volta in un viaggio magico. Simone Rocha ci dimosterà che è unica, nonostante il nome. Il designer di Scot, Holly Fulton ci catturerà con le sue stampe grafiche, tessuti pregiati e accessori che sono affermazioni. Ultimo, ma certamente non per importanza, il Fashion Fringe show, designer giovani e di talento che meritano più di chiunque altro la nostra attenzione e il nostro supporto dato che è certo che saranno i prossimi grandi nomi nel sempre più veloce mondo della Moda.
