Welcome to the 11th Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival A Message from the Mayor... We in Burgaw are delighted to host this wonderful festival in our historic town center. It gives us a chance to show how beautiful a place our home town is, full of small-town charm, history, friendly people and interesting architecture. We hope the festival has everything you and your family enjoy, with a large variety of vendors, children’s activities, great food, live entertainment and of course, fresh blueberries. You can visit our shops, restaurants, historic buildings and parks and maybe even take a stroll on our walking trail. So enjoy your time in Burgaw and come back to visit us sometime. Burgaw is a great town, year round.

- Eugene Mulligan, Mayor Town of Burgaw 2 – NC Blueberry Festival

It’s here, the 2014 NC Blueberry Festival!

by Olivia Dawson, NC Blueberry Festival Association Coordinator This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, once again the third Saturday in June, on Burgaw’s Historic Courthouse Square. When you ask many locals what one of their favorite things about Burgaw is, the first thing that comes to many minds is the North Carolina Blueberry Festival. The North Carolina Blueberry Festival continues to grow in attendance and popularity. It has been selected as one of the top premier family events in our state. The festival is a symbol and a tribute to the blueberry farmers, as well as blueberry production in the southeastern region of our state. Last year the festival once again had picture perfect June weather. The festival was enjoyed by over 30,000 visitors and the festival proceeds again provided $20,000 in scholarships! The Blueberry industry provides a statewide eco-

nomic impact of an estimated 70 million dollars annually along with festival day generating an estimated 1.5 million dollar positive impact to the local area economy during this one day event. When visitors come into the area for the festival they not only see and visit the local shops, restaurants, and businesses in Burgaw, but those that surround the area as well, including Wallace, Wilmington, and area beaches. This year The NC Blueberry Festival will celebrate it’s 11th Anniversary with anticipation of an even greater festival with larger crowds, more than 125 of the top-rated craft vendors in our state, 25 food vendors, blueberry car & truck show, 5K Run/Walk, Tour de Blueberry bike ride, many more non-profit organizations, civic groups, educational displays, not to mention the area churches with their delicious blueberry baked treats! As always we schedule fantastic music

and various entertainment venues to provide enjoyment for all age groups. Of course our main attraction is an abundance of fresh, local blueberries provided by our kind farmers! As always Blueberry and BBQ Sales will be available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 20th, just the beginning of the events and activities that kick off the festival! Another Friday favorite to the locals as well as our visitors alike is the well-known annual Recipe Contest where many bring their cooking and creative skills, which of course has to include blueberries, in a prepared dish to be judged. The event is held once again at our restored Burgaw Community House adjacent to the Courthouse Square. This is a continuing event sponsored by The Star News, with the annual BBQ Cook-Off event commencing Friday evening.

That’s right, because North Carolina is so enthusiastic about its barbecue, it has also been made a part of The North Carolina Blueberry Festival. The BBQ Cook-Off is an annual blueberry festival tradition, which features champion cookers throughout North Carolina where they will compete to be named the 11th Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival Barbecue Champs! Last but not least we will welcome back our Blueberry Belles and the newly crowned North Carolina Blueberry Festival Queens! Please come join us on festival day Saturday, June 21st from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as the North Carolina Blueberry Festival celebrates it’s 11th anniversary! Come enjoy the taste of the “#1 Health Food”, good ’ole southeastern North Carolina Blueberries! The festival’s success is owed to all the volunteers, visitors, farmers, and sponsors.

“Each year the Festival Board strives to make the festival bigger and better. I joined the board almost three years ago becoming the Festival Coordinator last year, January 2013. This year is my second year as Festival Coordinator. Being from Burgaw and now raising my own family in Burgaw, I wanted to be involved in the community. With some past pageant experience I wanted to bring the pageant experience to the festival while providing a new way to represent the festival. The queens will do just that” ~Olivia Dawson, NC Blueberry Festival Association Coordinator

Blueberry swirl cheesecake 1 2 2 2

c. ground graham crackers (5 oz. or about 8 sheets) 4 large eggs at room temperature ¼ c. sugar 1 Tsp. cornstarch 1 Tsp. lemon juice 1 Tsp. water Tsp. butter, melted 4 (8 oz.) cream cheese at room temperature Tsp. heavy cream pinch of salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 c. fresh blueberries

Wash blueberries and mix with ½ cup sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice and water in saucepan. Over medium heat cook and stir constantly until thick and clear; set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wrap exterior of a 9-inch springform pan (including base) in a double layer of foil; set aside. Stir together cracker crumbs, melted butter and two tablespoons sugar in a medium bowl. Press crumb mixture firmly onto bottom of pan. Bake until set, about 10 minutes. Allow to cool on a rack. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees. Put cream cheese in bowl of electric mixer, fitted with paddle attachment; mix on medium speed until fluffy, about three minutes. With mixer on low speed, add remaining 1 ½ cups sugar in a slow, steady stream. Add salt and vanilla; mix until well combined. Add two tablespoons heavy cream. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing each until just combined, but careful not to overmix. Pour cream cheese filling over crust. Drop blueberry mixture by rounded teaspoon on top. Make 8-10 puddles on top. With a wooden skewer or toothpick swirl sauce into filling Set springform pan wrapped in foil into a shallow roasting pan. Transfer to oven. Carefully ladle boiling water into roasting pan to halfway up sides of springform pan. Bake until cake is set, but still slightly wobbly in center, about 65 minutes. Transfer cake pan to rack; let cake cool completely. Refrigerate, uncovered 4-6 hours or overnight. Before un-molding, run a knife around the edge of the cake.
