Welcome to the 13th Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival
A Message from the Mayor...
We in Burgaw are delighted to host this wonderful festival in our historic town center. It gives us a chance to show how beautiful a place our home town is, full of small-town charm, history, friendly people and interesting architecture. We hope the festival has everything you and your family enjoy, with a large variety of vendors, children’s activities, great food, live entertainment and of course, fresh blueberries. You can visit our shops, restaurants, historic buildings and parks and maybe even take a stroll on our walking trail. So enjoy your time in Burgaw and come back to visit us sometime. Burgaw is a great town, year round.

It’s here, the 2016 NC Blueberry Festival!
by Olivia Dawson, NC Blueberry Festival Coordinator It’s that time again, time to once again celebrate at the 2016 North Carolina Blueberry Festival!! I am excited to say that this year the festival will celebrate its 13th Anniversary as the festival continues to grow in popularity! This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016, as is tradition, always held the third Saturday in June in Downtown Burgaw around its Historic Courthouse Square. Like in years past, Blueberry and BBQ Sales be available beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 17th. This is just the start of events and activities that kick off the festival on Friday! In addition to our customary one day event, the festival is excited to continue with our Friday night event to kick off another great festival! On Friday night join us as the fun starts by enjoying entertainment provided by the Fantastic Shakers from 7 to 10 p.m. at the main stage! Another Friday favorite to the locals as well as our visitors is the well-known Annual Recipe Contest where many bring their cooking and creative skills which of course has to include blueberries in a prepared dish to be judged, held at our restored Burgaw Community House adjacent to the Courthouse Square, this is a continuing event sponsored by The Star News, with the Annual Whole Hog BBQ Cook-Off Event also commencing Friday evening. The BBQ Cook-off event is another favorite annual blueberry festival tradition, which features champion cookers throughout North Carolina. The North Carolina Blueberry Festival is always growing in attendance and familiarity. It remains as one of the top premier family events in our state. The festival is a symbol and a tribute to this area’s blueberry farmers, as well as the blueberry production in the southeastern region of our state. With the excitement of additions to the festival, while also returning to tradition and to what our festival attendees enjoy, we have high hopes of an even greater festival this year and larger crowds! The festival has brought back many of the favorite bands so we are excited about this year’s entertainment lineup. This year the festival will host more than 130 of the best craft vendors from around our state, many appetizing food vendors, added activities for the children, an old favorite the Annual Blueberry Car Show, our Annual 5K Run/ Walk, Tour de Blueberry bike ride as always provided by the Cape Fear Cyclists group, Model Train Show presented by the Cape Fear Model Train Show Society inside our renovated depot, non-profit organizations, civic groups, and educational displays. Back again this year is the Antique Show and Appraisal Fair that will be located on the depot dock. Let me remind you to visit the area church booths that provide us with their delicious blueberry baked goods and jams! But of course the festival’s main attraction is the abundance of fresh local blueberries provided by our many farmers from around the area, so most importantly do not leave without your flats of blueberries! Come join us on Friday night June 17th from 7- 10 pm and on festival day Saturday June 18th from 9 a.m. to 10p.m. as we celebrate the 13th Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival! Come enjoy the taste of the good ’ole southeastern North Carolina blueberries! This is a festival you are sure to enjoy! As always the festival’s success is owed to all the volunteers, visitors, farmers, and our sponsors! We appreciate their support in making this festival such a great and fun-filled family event enjoyed by thousands!

Always Remember the 3 D’s of Protection from Mosquitoes...
DRAIN
Many mosquito problems in your neighborhood are likely to come from water-filled containers that you, the resident, can help to eliminate. All mosquitoes require water in which to breed. Be sure to drain any standing water around your house.
DRESS
Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing. Studies have shown that some of the 174 mosquito species in the United States are more attracted to dark clothing and most can readily bite through tight-fitting clothing of loose weave. When practical, wear long sleeves and pants.
DEFEND
Choose a mosquito repellent that has been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency. Registered products have been reviewed, approved, and pose minimal risk for human safety when used according to label directions
