It’s festival time again!!! By Olivia Dawson, The NC Blueberry Festival Coordinator

When you think of blueberries in the southeast the first thing that comes to many minds is the North Carolina Blueberry Festival held each third Saturday in June on Burgaw’s Historic Courthouse Square. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, June 15th. The N.C. Blueberry Festival continues to grow in attendance and has been selected as one of the top premier family events in our state. The festival is a symbol and a tribute to the blueberry farmers as well as blueberry production in the southeastern region of our state. The festival last year with picture perfect June weather was enjoyed by over 30,000 visitors and once again the festival proceeds provided $20,000 in scholarships! This year The N.C. Blueberry Festival will humbly celebrate its 10th Anniversary with anticipation of an even greater festival with larger crowds, more than 120 of the top-rated craft vendors in our state, 25 food vendors, blueberry car & truck show, 5K run/walk, Tour de Blueberry bike ride, antique show & sales, many non-profit organizations, civic groups, educational displays, and

area churches with their delicious blueberry baked treats. Fantastic music and various entertainment venues will provide enjoyment for all age groups. And of course our main attraction, an abundance of fresh local blueberries! The Blueberry industry provides a statewide economic impact of an estimated 70 million dollars annually along with festival day generating an estimated 1.5 million dollar positive impact to the local area economy during this one day event. When visitors come into the area for the festival they see and visit not only local shops, restaurants, and businesses but those that surround the area including Wallace, Wilmington, and area beaches. Blueberry and BBQ Sales from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14th, are just the start of events and activities that kick off the festival. Another Friday favorite to the locals as well as our visitors is the well-known Annual Recipe Contest where many bring their cooking and creative skills which of course has to include blueberries in a prepared dish

to be judged, held this year at our newly restored Burgaw Community House adjacent to the Courthouse Square, this is a continuing event sponsored by The Star News, recipes are then entered into our “Best of the Blues” cookbook, with the Annual BBQ Cook-off Event commencing Friday evening. That’s right, because North Carolina is so enthusiastic about its barbeque, it has also been made a part of The North Carolina Blueberry Festival. The BBQ Cook-off event is an annual blueberry festival tradition, which features champion cookers throughout North Carolina where they will compete to be named the 10th Annual N.C. Blueberry Festival Barbecue Champs! Please join us on festival day Saturday June 15th from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as The North Carolina Blueberry Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary and enjoy the taste of the “#1 Health Food”, good ’ole southeastern North Carolina Blueberries!, as its success is owed to all the volunteers, visitors, farmers, and sponsors.

Celebrating Blueberries and Education By Olivia Dawson, The NC Blueberry Festival Coordinator Sampson Community College recently continued its support of the North Carolina Blueberry Festival by helping to distribute $20,000 in scholarships to 20 rising college students. The scholarship application review team of Ms. Katie Brown (Director of Customized Training and Workforce Development), Ms. Ann Butler (Dean of Continuing Education), Dr. Jay Gillispie (Vice President of Academic Affairs), and Alonza Royal (Coordinator of Human Resources) met regularly for several weeks and evaluated nearly 80 Blueberry Festival Scholarship applications. While a lot of hours went into the selection process, Dr. Gillispie said the team was “glad to have been part of helping local students further their education.” The 2013 scholarship recipients are: DaQuan Raheem Bordeaux (Pender); Matthew Butler (Sampson); Rodney Danks, Jr. (Sampson); Rubicelia Gasca (Pender); Bailey Mae Giddeons (Pender); Katelyn Hester (Bladen); Morgan Holland (Sampson); Addie Humphrey (New Hanover); Selena Ibarra (Sampson); Hunter Johnson (Sampson); Amber Kennedy (Duplin); Tabitha Knott (New Hanover); Melissa Macon (Bladen); Kirstan Markovitch (Pender); Kyle McTavish (New Hanover); MacKenzie Morgan (New Hanover); Jammie Piercy (Sampson); Ricky Pope (Sampson); Tajaya Wright (Pender); Morgen Yarasheski (Sampson). Sampson Community College President Paul Hutchins will be at the Blueberry Festival in Burgaw to congratulate the recipients and pass out their awards as part of the opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 15. Burgaw Mayor Pete Cowan has been very supportive of the Blueberry Festival’s scholarship activities and the festival itself. He said: “This is the 10th year of the Blueberry Festival. This festival is one of the premier family events every year in southeastern North Carolina and provides a fantastic opportunity for entire families to enjoy.” In addition to the fun to be had at the festival, Festival Coordinator Olivia Dawson added: “What a lot of people don’t realize is that the proceeds generated from the festival are used to provide college scholarships to students who are from Bladen, Duplin, New Hanover, Pender, and Sampson counties in southeastern North Carolina where blueberries are predominantly grown.” For more information on the 2013 Blueberry Festival, please contact Olivia Dawson at 910-259-2007 or by email at info@ncblueberryfestival.com. The 10th Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival

COOK-OFF

Because North Carolina is so enthusiastic about its barbeque it has been made a part of The North Carolina Blueberry Festival. The North Carolina Blueberry Festival holds a Barbecue Cook off each year. This event is an annual blueberry festival tradition, this year the festival will proudly celebrate its 10th Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival! The pigs are cooked by many local area contestants where they will compete to be named the 10th Annual N.C. Blueberry Festival Barbecue Champs. The contestants are judged on the taste of their barbeque and their sauce served with it. The pigs may be cooked with wood, charcoal, or gas. Cooking begins on the Friday before the festival, June 14, 2013, and Judging will begin at 8:00 am on the Saturday morning of the festival, June 15, 2013. After judging the array of flavors, the meat is then chopped and served at the festival as BBQ. You will find this to be the most popular meal at the festival!! Festival proceeds are utilized in providing scholarships to deserving seniors in the blueberry producing counties; Bladen, Duplin, New Hanover, Pender, and Sampson. The festival is held each June on the Courthouse Square in Historic Downtown Burgaw, NC. For more information visit www.ncblueberryfestival. com.

Blueberry basics In addition to their sweet, delectable flavor and visual appeal, blueberries are jam-packed with good nutrition. They are a convenient little berry – at home in pies and pancakes, salads, smoothies and sauces. Or, simply wash and eat – no peeling, pitting or slicing needed. How to buy blueberries Fresh blueberries are most plentiful during summer months, but you will find them in the market year round, along with frozen, canned and dried blueberries. How to store blueberries Refrigerate fresh blueberries in the original plastic pack or in a covered bowl or storage container. Wash berries just before use. Use within 10 days of purchase. How to freeze blueberries To successfully freez blueberries, use berries that are unwashed and completely dry. Discard berries that look bruised or shriveled. Place berries, in their original plastic pack, in a re-sealable plastic bag. Or, transfer berries to freezer containers or re-sealable freezer bags. The berries will freeze individually and you can remove portions as needed. Remember to rinse before using. Blueberry nutrition facts Blueberries contain 80 fat-free calories per cup. They are a good source of dietary fiber and vitamin C. They rank high in antioxidants and help protect against cancer, heart disease and other age-related diseases. Researchers have found compounds in blueberries that help prevent urinary tract infection. Just one, half cup, of blueberries help meet the recommended five to nine servings a day of colorful fruits and veggies. Courtesy of www.blueberry.org.

Tips on buying fresh blueberries When you go to buy fresh blueberries, look for ones that are firm, dry, plump and smooth-skinned, with a silvery surface bloom and no leaves or stems. Size isn’t an indicator of maturity but color is. Berries should be deep purple-blue to blue-black. Reddish berries aren’t ripe, but you can use them in cooking. Avoid blueberries that look soft or shriveled or have any signs of mold. If you see juice stains in a container of blueberries, it means the fruit might be bruised. Refrigerate fresh blueberries as soon as you get them home, either in their original plastic pack or in a covered bowl or container. Be sure to wash your berries before you start snacking, and eat them within 10 days of purchase (that’s the easy part!). Courtesy of www.blueberry.org.
