Progress with FEMA, insurance in courthouse repair funding

By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher Progress is reported with FEMA and the insurance company that insures the Pender County Courthouse, according to Pender County Director of Facilities Allen Vann. Vann told Pender County Commissioners Monday a meeting with FEMA officials last week gave a better picture of what will be eligible for reimbursement in the Court-

house repair project.

The historic Courthouse was heavily damaged during Hurricane Florence and has stood unused since the storm in 2018. Court facilities once housed in the building have been temporarily housed in other buildings around downtown Burgaw “FEMA has offered a re-inspection of the Courthouse this week,� Vann said. “The

Social media post leads to arrests From Staff Reports The Pender County Sheriff ’s Office was notified Nov. 25 of a social media post referencing a potential shooting at Burgaw Middle School Nov. 26.

Upon notification of the post, an investigation was launched. As a result of that investigation, at 4:48 a.m. Nov. 26, two search warrants were executed at two mobile homes located on Tasha Lane in Burgaw.

Practicing Presence Who can resist the sound of children chanting ‘let’s open presents’ at Christmastime? Children are palpably present, unlike their adult counterparts who are typically worried about what comes next. Young ones get as excited about the wrapping as they do about the gifts, which I still find true of myself to this day. I have always been attracted to bright shiny objects, including presents with significant presence.

Think ‘Price is Right’, where folks make quick choices based on outside appearances. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could embrace life’s packaging with similar eagerness and excitement?

I’ll admit, it was one of my most anticipated aspects of the season, right up there with seeing what Santa brought on Christmas morning. Our family always opened presents on Christmas Eve, after dinner, baths and bedtime prep. We gathered around the tree, excitedly opening all the gifts we had randomly received all month.

Some arrived on the porch in big brown boxes from relatives and friends far away, while others appeared intermittently as each of us embraced individual elf duty along the way.

After the holidays, inquiring minds always want to know: What did you get for Christmas?

Seems that how and with whom you spent the holidays is secondary. But the older we get the more we realize it is not what is under the tree that matters as much as who gathers around it with us.

Adults are always busy working on ‘to dos’ while children are better at perfecting ‘ta das.’ Why not create a ‘to be’ list for the holidays, rather than the traditional to do list, and start it with a plan to be more fully present.

Gifts are a language of love, but our presence is much more revealing.

How do you celebrate your holiday, and with whom do you enjoy spending time? What are your fondest memories and what moments offer the most meaning? That is the essence of our presence, and the real reason for the season.

Practicing presence is paramount to hearing and honoring our purpose on this planet, yet many neglect to navigate this priceless path. Dr. Charles Stanly suggests finding a quiet place where it is dark and free of distractions if necessary to experience the essence of presence and make it a primary practice.

Morning song Mr. Roo greets the morning an hour or so early every day, much to the dismay of the geese.

I don’t know why our rooster gets an early start, but that’s better than the one we had who might crow at any point on the clock, day or night, for no reason other than the fact that he could.

He was not our favorite chicken.

It is true that I love the night, with the glory of a star-spotted blue-black sky reminding us that we’re really not that significant. There’s nothing like being in the deep woods or beside a snapping fire with a lazy moon sliding through the pines with the enthusiasm of a first-grader leaving Grandma’s house for the classroom of a least-favorite teacher.

But when it’s been a bad night, the morning always seems to make things better. When the dawn reluctantly shoos away a good night, the sunrise makes things better still.

Perhaps Mr. Roo has a consistently positive attitude, and that’s why he starts the day before the day itself. Maybe he just has a strict work ethic, and sees time in bed as wasted if one can see the first hues hint that the sun is about to make its appearance.

I love the dawn – not as much as Mr. Roo, perhaps, but still with the joy of a child on Christmas. God never paints the sky the same way, and no amount of photography can ever truly pre-

My day usually starts with Mr. Roo’s reveille (or is it reverie? Who knows?). It isn’t long after his first call to arms that the alarms go off, reminding me that lying in bed doesn’t count for getting up and at’em.

William IX is also a morningaphile, and it doesn’t take long for him to work his way up to a full-bore redbone roar if I spend too much time under the covers.

My bride could sleep through a hurricane in a capsized boat flying through a glass factory, so responding to the hound’s entreaties fall on me. The other dogs are far more polite; indeed,

Here are some tips and resources that can help.

When it comes to monitoring and caring for an aging parent from afar, you have a couple options.

You can either hire a professional to oversee your dad’s needs, or you can manage things yourself by building a support system, tapping into available resources, and utilizing technology devices that can help you keep tabs on him.

Professional help If your dad needs a lot of help, you should consider hiring an “aging life care professional” who will give him a thorough assessment to identify his needs, and will set up and manage all aspects of his care. These professionals typically charge between $100 and $200 per hour, and are not covered by Medicare.

To find a professional in your dad’s area, ask his doctor for a referral or visit the Aging Life Care Association website at AgingLifeCare.org.

Do-it-yourself If your dad only needs occasional help, or if you can’t afford to use a care manager, here are some things you can do yourself to help him. presence?

Tap local resources: Most communities offer a range of free or subsidized services that can help seniors with basic needs such as home delivered meals, transportation, senior companion services and more. Contact the Area Aging Agency near your dad – call 800-6771116 for contact information – to find out what’s available. s5SE lNANCIAL AIDS If your dad needs help with his financial chores, arrange for direct deposit for his income sources, and set up automatic payments for his utilities and other routine bills. You may also want to set up your dad’s online banking service, so you can pay bills and monitor his account anytime.

Or, if you need help, hire a daily money manager (aadmm.com) to do it for you. They charge between $25 and $100 per hour.

Benefitscheckup.org is another excellent resource to look for financial assistance programs that may help your dad, particularly if he’s lower-income. s(IRE IN HOME HELP anticipate your future, but be sure to practice presence in the process.

My holiday challenge to you is this: commit to being more fully present

De pending on your dad’s needs, you may need to hire a part-time homecare aide that can help with things like preparing meals, housekeeping or personal care. Costs can run anywhere from $12 up to $25 per hour.

To find someone, ask for referrals through your dad’s doctor or area hospital discharge planners, or try websites like Care.com, CareLinx.com, CareFamily.com or CareSpotter. com. s5TILIZE TECHNOLOGY: To help you keep tabs on your dad and manage his care from afar, there are various technologies that can help.

For example, there are motion sensors (like Silver Mother - sen.se/ silvermother) and video cameras (nest.com/camera) that can help you make sure he is moving around the house normally; computerized pillboxes (medminder.com) that will notify you if he forgets to take his medication; simplified computer tablets (grandpad.net) that provide important face-toface video calls; and a variety of websites that can help you coordinate care (lotsahelpinghands.com) and medical information (reunioncare.com) with other family members.

Our home is back in a hollow, with a mixture of vintage pines and hardwoods towering over the house, and a misbegotten pine plantation due east. The lane parallels the old railbed, so for several months out of the year, the sun shines straight and clean down the pine, bay and scrub oaks lining the tunnel from the start of day to the end.

The guineas, busy with their secret but important plans, are usually examining the yard by the time I am stirring, although I admit it’s fun to wake them from their perches in the old oak, and watch them panic their way to the ground looking like miniature turkeys, but with none of the grace and class of a big gobbler.

The geese are shrewish from the moment I walk outside, whether it’s Pippin on a late nest shared with, then stolen from the ducks (if those eggs hatch, they’ll be a confused bunch of birds) or the rest of the gang.

The other geese complain that the ditch is too cold, or the pinestraw too lumpy, or the corn too dry for their tastes. A half-hearted, harmless wave of the walking stick usually sends them away with threats to write a strongly worded letter to management.

New at investing? Follow these suggestions If you’re fairly new to investing, you might be wondering what sort of rules you should follow or moves you should make.

And while everyone’s situation is different, there are indeed guidelines that make sense for all investors. Here are some to consider: Learn the basics. The investment world can seem confusing, but the more you know about the basic components, the more confident you’ll be when you begin to invest.

For starters, you’ll want to be familiar with the essential types of investments: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on. And it’s also important to know that some investments are designed to provide growth – an increase in the investment’s value – while others provide income in the for m of dividends or interest payments, and still others may of fer g rowth and income. s3ET YOUR GOALS 9OU need to know why you’re investing – and that means you must clearly define your goals. Do you want to retire early? When you do retire, what kind of lifestyle would you like to have? Are you planning on helping your children (or grandchildren) pay for college? Once you’ve established your goals, you can create the appropriate investment strategy for achieving them, taking into account your time horizon and risk tolerance. s)NVEST REGULARLY !T first, you may only be able to afford to put in small amounts to your investment accounts, but even so, try to contribute REGULARLY 9OU LL GET INTO the habit of investing and, later on, when you earn more money, you can ramp up your contributions. If you have a 401(k) or similar plan at work, the money can come out of your paycheck before you even see it. s4HINK LONG TERM !S you begin investing, it’s

important to have the right attitude. Specifically, don’t look for the “hot� investments that will make you a “bundle� in a matter of weeks. Investing just doesn’t work that way – instead, it’s a decadeslong process of carefully choosing, managing and adjusting a diversified portfolio that’s suitable for your individual needs.

And by maintaining a long-term focus, you’ll be less susceptible to making ill-advised moves in response to short-term market events. s$ON T GET SCARED OFF by downturns. If you invest for many years, it’s inevitable that you will experience sharp drops in the financial markets.

But these declines are actually a normal part of investing. If you overreact to them by selling investments just because their price has dropped, you’ll not only be breaking a cardinal rule of investing – to buy low and sell high – but you’ll also be disrupting the type of cohesive, continuous investment strategy that’s necessary to help you achieve your goals. s'ET SOME HELP 9OU may find it easier to navigate the investment landscape if you get some help from a professional advisor – someone who understands your goals and family situation and who can make appropriate investment recommendations. A financial advisor can also suggest changes to your portfolio in response to changes in your life (new job, child graduating college, etc.) and in your goals, such as a new date for retirement.

When you invest, there aren’t many guarantees.

But by following these suggestions, you will know, at the very least, that you’re taking the steps that can lead to success.

By Barbara Mullins Special to the Post & Voice The Pender Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) was proud to feature speaker Cliff Goodall, a 94-year-old World War II Navy veteran, in their November Perks meeting as they honored him and all local veterans for their service to our country.

Goodall signed up for service to our country when he was only 17 years old. He was subsequently part of the D Day invasion of Normandy and his stories, full of insights and valor, were breathtaking and entertaining.

For the past five years, he has returned to Normandy where he been recognized for his service. While in

Normandy, Goodall participates in parades; visits with children in schools to share his stories; and, stays WITH A LOCAL FAMILY 9OU ARE a role model for all of us, Mr. Goodall’ We deeply appreciate you and your many contributions to our country.

Hampstead Girl Scout receives Gold Award Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines congratulates Lillin Malinowski of Hampstead, for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout, a designation she earned by creating an art curriculum for Topsail Middle School’s adaptive class. For her project, Exceptional Art with Exceptional Children, M a l i n ow s k i c re at e d art-based lesson plans to help the students learn the importance of self-expression. Malinowski hopes her project encourages students to utilize art as an outlet for their creativity in the future.

Malinowski is the daughter of Jim and Beth Malinowski and she is a senior at Topsail High School. She has been in Girl Scouts since 2008 and is in Girl Scout Troop #923 led by Adonna Pipkin.

In addition to Girl Scouting, Malinowski plays volleyball for both her high school and a club team and she is an active member of the FHUMC youth group.

By ear ning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Malinowski has become a community leader. Her

accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart. Ear ning the Girl Scout Gold Award is no easy feat as a girl demonstrates significant leadership, planning, networking and organizational skills as girls spend, on average, one to two years working to complete her project.

He’s here – our first local cold stun of this season. And as usual it’s a little green who didn’t get the memo that he should have started heading out of Dodge and into warmer waters.

Nov. 14 we got a call at our hospital from some very alert folks in Surf City who noticed a little turtle struggling in the canal on 9th Street. We’ve been passing along info in this column on how to handle turtles that look like they might be in trouble so they knew exactly what to do – get him out of the water ASAP! Our staff headed over to pick him up, not knowing what to expect when they got there. Surprisingly this little critter was not in bad shape at all, at least on the outside.

He had a barnacle or two and small chip in his carapace but other than that he came in pretty clean, and alert.

His admit temp was 68 degrees so he had to spend some time sitting in our “waiting room” in a dry tank while he slowly warmed enough to be put in a tank in Sick Bay where our water temps generally run between 78-80 degrees.

Remember that one of our cold stun first responder (that’s you!) rules is to keep the turtle in a cool place until we can get there to pick him up. That’s because a temperature swing of more than four degrees either way can readily send a turtle into shock.

So in addition to giving the little guy a good look-see and a soapy bath he needed a name. That job went to our Saturday UNCW interns who submitted three possibilities, and the winner was (drum roll) Green Bean.

We don’t know the back story, if there is one, other than he is a green. But it’s kind of fun to say – Green Bean.

He’s making what seems to be a swift recovery from what could have been a tragic

end for such a little turtle if those folks hadn’t seen him and quickly recognized that he needed help. He’s eating well, almost seven ounces a day, and that’s one of the keys to getting better. We’re hoping that he doesn’t develop any of the other problems that can show up months later, but right now the future looks rosy for little Green Bean.

Now that we know that the cold weather and cold stuns are both around we’ll keep repeating this quick review of how to handle a turtle that is not moving or appears to be dead – it might just be cold stunned. If it’s a little guy gently pick it up and relocate it to a car, garage or other unheated area of your home.

Do not try to warm it up – the shock of a quick temperature change could send it into shock. We’ll send our staff out to rescue any and all turtles, big and small when you give us the word. Call one of the following numbers if you suspect you’ve come across a local cold-stunned turtle.

Finding the will of God

Mendenhall Contributing Writer Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law they meditate day and night‌.the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalm 1: 1-2, 6 Jesus had a close relationship with God. He lived, you might say, at the very heart of God. He said things like, I and the Father are one.� Or “ “if you follow me, you follow the one who sent me.� Like

the person in our psalm this morning, Jesus was constantly seeking God’s will for his life and for the life of the world. At every juncture of His life, Jesus always did the will of the Father and taught us to do the same.

But we aren’t Jesus. We don’t have the same relationship with God that he had. How can we know the will of God? How can we find it?

First, we can seek and find the will of God through Jesus. He is our example and guide. He is the one who followed God’s will completely so to know Jesus and to follow Jesus is to know the Father and his will for us.

Imitate Jesus‌. Emu-

late Jesus‌ One must embody Jesus, that is, enter into his way, his life and to make it our own. Jesus is the human face of God. If you want to know what God is like look at Jesus.

If you want to know the will of God watch Jesus because he dedicated his life to the will of God. Another way to enter the will of God is to recognize the urgency of God’s Kingdom. It was Jesus who took up preaching by telling us that the kingdom of God is at hand. It is immediate. It is eminent. It is persistent in its coming.

The Kingdom of God is always at hand so we are always at work in the kingdom. We are diligent.

We are deliberate. We are

always seeking and doing God’s will. We are constantly engaged in the work of God’s kingdom coming into the world.

God is working His purpose out and calls us to be part of it.

Finally as we engage in God’s will we should pursue it with love. We should do everything in the shadow of God’s love, manifesting God’s love, working in God’s purpose with love in our hearts.

The Christians of the Celtic tradition which thrived in Ireland, Scot-

land and Wales for centuries had an interesting approach to the pagan culture and practices around them. They didn’t try to stamp everything pagan out but rather embrace them, transformed them, and claimed then for God’s kingdom. They drew things in‌ people, events, activities, places into the love and purpose of God. They encompassed all for God with love. So we work for God’s purpose in his love, by his love and through his love. God is

not a God of destruction but a God of creation so we do everything in and through the creative love of God. God’s Will can be elusive. It can easily slip from our grasp and our focus‌ but if we seek God in Jesus Christ, if we understand and live in the urgency of God’s kingdom and we work for His purpose with love and grace.

We can begin, little by little, to draw the whole world into God’s Will and Purpose, his plan for all the earth

Jesse John Cartwright WATHA -- Jesse John Cartwright, 79, of Watha passed from his earthly life Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at his home surrounded with love by his family.

He was bor n May 14, 1940 and was a native of the Weeksville Community in Pasquotank County.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Maude Bateman Cartwright; grandparents, Jesse and Fannie Cartwright and John and Lottie Bateman; brothers and their spouses, Roy T. and Carol Cartwright, and CD and Maxine Cartwright; stepson, Lin Hewett; great grandson, Brent Ritterbusch; nephews, Talmadge and Dean Cartwright; daughter Crystal’s fiancé, Mike Murphy. Lovingly remembered aunts, Hazel, Virginia, Sallie, and Gracie; and dear friends, Ernest Cartwright and Bobby Bell.

Jesse is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jo Ann Car twright (December 13, would have been their anniversary); daughters, Darlene Bennett (Todd) of Elgin, SC, Crystal Cartwright of Allen, TX, and Gena Hewett Wells (Mike) of Willard; grandchildren, Zachary Lilly (BJ) of Talbott, TN, Courtney Lilly (Jake) and her daughter, Adelynne of Princeton, TX; Jessica Wells Ritterbusch and her children, Trey, Christian and Lauren, Samantha Wells Pierce (Earl) and their daughter, Elena; and several nieces, nephews and extended family all who loved Jesse.

He was a long time faithful member of Forest Hills Baptist Church.

Jesse John was a honest hardworking good man who was loved and respected by so many. He not only taught us how to live but set excellent examples by the Christian life that he lived daily.

The family received friends 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2019 at Forest Hills Baptist Church Fellowship Hall with funeral service at noon in the church sanctuary.

Pastor Timothy Cook conducted the service. Burial followed in Riverview Memorial Park.

Each dawn, though, I have to stop and talk to God for a moment; whether I’m shivering in a blanket-like bathrobe, or swatting mosquitoes, every dawn has a memory or five of dawns past, painted across the sky like pink, orange, yellow and purple graffiti.

There were the hungry dawns when tugboats woke me up in a bad part of downtown Wilmington, and if I had coffee, it was made on a grill or purchased with change swept from a parking lot. There was the gray dawn when we saw a humpback whale feasting on a shoal of spots and Spanish mackerel, in a boat that looked awfully big until the waves crashed over the tuna tower. There were black, gray roaring dawns as hurricanes roared and water rose.

There was a strange dawn in Charleston with a good buddy when we watched our plans go awry; the sky was lemon yellow and clear that morning. There were red and orange and blue dawns when I watched the sun rise through windows of one newspaper or another, having worked all night, sometimes without realizing it, finishing a project or covering a forest fire.

There was a beautiful dawn when everything was indigo and green and black, as I slept on a picnic

table in a rest area in the mountains.

There were bright or dreary or cold or steamy dawns when my father and I planned the day, or broke down the events of the night, coffee offering scant reassurance and strength for another day’s labors.

Among my most favorite dawns are the ones spent shivering in a deer stand or using a dime and a quarter to romance (or challenge) a squirrel into range, or turning off the paved road onto a rutted farm lane on the way to find a coyote or bobcat or fox dancing a waltz of regret at having been outthought by a human.

Then there are the ones where Miss Rhonda and start the day early together, for good reasons or bad, sharing our morning prayers and the plans for the day yet unborn.

Every dawn has some of those other dawns stitched into the fabric of its multicolored quilt. Every dawn starts with the reminder that on another dawn, those who loved the Lord found his tomb empty and his body gone.

Every dawn is another chance to live, laugh, learn and love as God paints another canvas with colors that will never be replicated, yet always offer solace from the night, and a promise that is never broken.

Continued from page 3A The only exception to the rudeness is old DuckDuck; at 14, he has all the graciousness of a Southern colonel or a Spanish patron, tempered with the philosophy and wisdom of old age. He makes his manners, I make mine, and he walks with me for a few feet, telling m things I cannot understand, due to my lack of fluency in Goose. After a while, he wanders on about his business, complaining about the younger generation of geese and how easy they have things, unlike when he was their age.

With the Cobrachickens safely on their way to file a complaint, Toni will eventually catch up. Her hound heritage is only three-quarters that of William’s, so her concern in the dawn is more to keep an eye on me than to discover what amazing new smells have arisen with the new day.

My mor ning walks aren’t as extensive as I like, due to my reluctance to stray too far from the coffeepot, as well as the ongoing limp and the need to start the day’s work. Some days, I wander out the drive and halfway down the lane, seeking a deer track, the smell of a bear, or signs of a wayward coyote. Some days it’s a struggle to get past the porch, although

candle making, musket demonstrations, living historians from Tryon Palace and the Burgwin-Wright House, and so much more!

Additionally, the demonstration area will be decorated for Christmas, so make sure to come and see all of the beautiful greenery.

1941 in Rock, West Virginia and was the daughter of Cline Emory and Ruby Parker Agee. In addition to her parents Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Engle; and brothers, Reginald Agee and Johnny Agee.

Lorraine is survived by her daughters, Joyce Engle (Richard Butler) and Sandy Brown; granddaughter, Brianne Brown; sister, Judy Siko (Arnold); brother, Dareel Agee (Rita); many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was a faithful member of Mission Baptist Church.

Funeral service was 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw with Pastor Nick Smith conducting the service.

Thanksgiving. The name speaks for itself. The official holiday to give thanks.

We get caught up in our family gatherings, bountiful feasts of homemade food, football games, and afternoon naps from all the tryptophan from the much too big turkey meals.

The first Thanksgiving was much different. In fact, the first Thanksgiving wasn’t even considered Thanksgiving.

It was a day of thanks though.

The Pilgrims were accustomed from their culture to celebrate numerous times each year, one of

which was following a successful harvest.

The Pilgrims settled in a land that was mostly abandoned after the plague had struck the inhabitant Patuxet tribe, leaving but one survivor. The first winter was harsh, and of the 100 settlers that arrived in the Mayflower, exactly 50 lived through the first year. Seemingly, it was not a very hospitable area of the country to survive.

But the remaining 50 Pilgrims had a successful harvest providing enough to last through the coming winter. And, as was custom in England, they decided to partake in a celebration.

Squanto, the last remaining Patuxet, as well as the Wampanoag tribe helped the Pilgrims through that first winter with rations and teaching them how to catch eel. In return, after the harvest, the Pilgrims invited 90 Native Americans to their feast.

It is a best guess the first Thanksgiving occurred sometime around the end of September or first of October, although there was

no date recorded. There are two accounts of the celebration speaking of the bounty that made the celebration such a success.

It was said that four of the Pilgrims went on a oneday hunt as waterfowl began to migrate to the area.

In that one day, those four took enough birds to feed the entire community for over a week. Along with the fowl, the Wampanoag also hunted with the Pilgrims in taking five deer, and a number of wild turkey.

There was food for everyone and food to store through harsher times as well. So much so, that it was written that it was a land of plenty. This was in harsh contrast to the first winter in which the Pilgrims did not have enough to survive on their own.

Two years later, Thanksgiving became much more of a civil holiday, as the celebration was proclaimed by the government rather than the church. The celebration lasted three days after 14 days of rain and their largest harvest since coming to the New World.

The celebration was held at the end of July, one day before more colonists arrived from England on a supply ship.

Out of all of this, there should be just as much thanks given to those that helped each other survive that first winter. Different peoples working together to help each make it one more day at a time. No harsh invasions, taking of resources against another’s will, or push of influence, but instead humans helping humans because it was right and just and natural.

We could learn a lot from studying this time again.

Commissioner Jackie Newton asked Vann for a running total on which parts of the project are expected to be paid for by FEMA and insurance, and what the county can expect to pay.

“We cannot bankroll this project. I’m not feeling the same level of confidence you have,” Newton said.

Lady Titans tame Cougars in season opener

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Heide Trask Lady Titan varsity basketball team of a year ago had a bad habit of standing around and waiting for the multi-talented Anisa Lewis to do her thing. Very seldom would anybody else step up unless she was not on the floor.

That being said, the team posted its first winning record in many years.

This year’s version of the Lady Titans has a new coach in veteran boy’s skipper Rodney Orr and a different approach as well.

Coach Orr’s ladies ran the floor and were much more intense on the defensive end in their season opener verse the 3A South Brunswick Cougars.

Sophomore Madalyn White scored 19 points with Lewis adding 18 as the

Rocky Point Titans earned a season opening 67-60 win.

The Cougars boasted a sturdy lineup that included the 6-2 Nija Bryant. That size bothered the Lady Titans in the early going.

Bryant scored six points in the first period on inside moves and putbacks. Trask went to Lewis in the early going and she answered with seven points. White added five as the Titans kept pace with South. The teams went into the second period tied at 15 apiece.

Trask leaned on Senior Yolando Scarborough to slow Bryant down and she did just that. The big center was held scoreless in the second quarter. However, her teammates picked up the slack, outscoring the Lady Titans 17-13. The home team Titans went into the second half trailing 32-28.

Coach Orr is still trying to get acclimated to the girls game. However, his team seemed to feed off of his every word. The third quarter showed this.

Chykira Pickett nailed two treys in the third frame and junior Leanna Pfeiffer scored eight points including two treys as the Titans outscored South 23-13.

Madalyn White scored five of her game high 19 points in the fourth quarter and Lewis scored six points as the home team earned the win. Pickett chipped in 11 points as the Titans had three players in double figures. Coach Orr’s charge finished the Cougars off in the final minutes with a 5 for 6 effort at the free throw line.

The Lady Titans (1-0) played at Swansboro on Tuesday and will play at South Brunswick on Friday.

Topsail softball sends four to play at the next level

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer One way to measure the success of a high-school program is by how many of the athletes go on to play in college, and last Monday (Nov. 26) in the Media Center at Topsail four talented young ladies put their names on the bottom of National Lettersof-Intent to continue their softball careers at the next level.

Seniors Darbie Lisk, Lauren Strnad, Addison Howard, and Aneshia (Nee Nee) Jordan all put pen-topaper in taking their vast athletic skills and academic prowess to the college scene.

Since joining the Topsail varsity as freshmen, all four girls have started at their respective positions, and the quartet has helped the Lady Pirates go 58-18 overall and 32-8 in the highly-competitive

Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference. Topsail won the conference title in 2019, and finished second in 2017 and 2018. They have advanced to the second round in the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs in 2017 and 2019, and made it to the third round in 2018.

Topsail third-baseman Darbie Lisk inked her commitment to attend the University of South Carolina-Upstate in Spartansburg (S.C.), choosing the Lady Spartan program over Limestone University and Coker University. In addition to her skills on the field, Lisk is carrying a 4.0 grade-point-average, and scored a 1,200 on her SAT. Darbie is leaning toward a career in Criminal Justice.

Darbie had a .476 batting average (30-for-63) last year with 23 runs scored, 25 RBIs, three 2Bs, and a home run. She had a .902 fielding percentage with

just six errors in 61 fielding chances.

“I had interest in Limestone and Coker, and generated interest from a couple of other schools, but my main college was Upstate,” Lisk said. “I think a large part of my desire to go there was the coaching staff. I chose them because they play at the level of competitiveness I was looking forward to. They expressed a lot of interest and I checked out their school, and the campus is beautiful. Of course, there was the education factor. It’s where I wanted my home to be for the next four years.”

Centerfielder Nee Nee Jordan is taking a major step in the competitive level, signing to attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. A fouryear starter, Nee Nee has a 3.8 GPA and is looking at a

On The Mat

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The area grapplers are getting their feet wet in some early matches.

Both Topsail and Trask have been busy while Pender has yet to wrestle.

The Topsail wrestling team went to Swansboro last Saturday and dominated in the Dirty Bird Tournament, finishing first out 10 participating teams, outdistancing second-place Southwest Onslow by 55 points. Trask was in the tournament and finished ninth.

The Fab Four of Ethan Blevins (106 pounds), Lucas Cotto (113), Ben Baker (120), and Alex Hopper (138) – all of whom won titles the week before at the Beach Blast at West Carteret - once again came away with gold medals, winning nine-of-10 bouts wrestled with falls, and winning the 10th with a 4-0 decision.

Blevins pinned Cleveland’s Colin McClure in the semifinals, and decked Trask’s Bernardino Garcia Salazar in the finals. Cotto came off his opening-bout bye to flatten Knightdale’s Jayden Adams, then went the distance in a 4-0 win over Swansboro’s Isaac Gawronski in the

title bout.

Baker made it three gold medals in a row with three first-period pins.

Baker pinned Northside’s Nakayie Kelly, Jacksonville’s Mallory McDonald and Trask’s Eric Sanchez Aparicio. Hopper also won with three pins, decking Trask’s Louis Velasco, Richland’s Tyler Hollenbeck, and reaching the top step on the podium with a win by pin over Swansboro’s Giovanni Rodriguez.

Pirates Damien Contreras (195) and Alex Jones (220) both earned silver medals.

Daniel Arrendondo (126), Shawn Longo (145), and Tristian Allison all placed third.

Prior to their trip to Swansboro, the Pirate wrestlers played host to a quad meet Tuesday with Trask, West Carteret, and New Bern coming to Hampstead.

Topsail’s only win of the evening came at the expense of Trask, as the Pirates rolled a 72-12 win over the Titans. Topsail (1-3) racked up nine wins by fall with Ethan Blevins (106), Jacob Macleer (113), Lucas Cotto (120), Ben Baker (126) running the table in four-straight bouts, and Alexander Hopper (138), Shawn Longo (145), Ethan Parker (152), Tristian Allison (170), and Alex Jones (285) finished things off.

Topsail then dropped a tough 37-35 decision to West Carteret that wasn’t decided until Patriot 195-pounder Jake Reynolds erases a 35-33 Pirate lead with a 13-3 win by major decision over Topsail’s Joseph Kimber-

ling.

Baker, Hopper, Parker, Jones, and Shawn Longo (145) recorded wins by fall, and Cotto won by technical fall.

Perennial power New Bern then laid a 62-12 defeat on the Pirates.

Blevins decked Bear Michael Baysden at 106, and Allison pinned New Bern’s at 182 pounds.

Topsail will open Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference action Wednesday (12/4), and head to New Bern on Saturday (12/7) for the Swiss Bear Invitational.

The Trask Titans had a very tough week on the mat. They participated in a quad meet at Topsail that featured three very strong programs in West Carteret, New Bern and Topsail.

New Bern slammed the Titans 78-3.

The Titans only win came from 132pound standout Rogan Heath.

Topsail beat the Titans 72-12 with Heath winning by fall. Brian Domingues-Perez won by fall as well.

Trask lost to West Carteret 65-16.

Tyler Still won a majority decision to pace the Titans.

The Titans participated in The Swansboro Dirty Bird Invitational over the weekend. Hartgrove, Kross, Parker lead Lady Pirates past Clinton 54-44

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer Not every early-season win is going to be pretty, but every game can be a teaching experience, and the Topsail girls’ basketball team had one of those last Tuesday after taking the 72.4-mile, one-hour, 16minute ride on an activity bus to face the Lady Dark Horses at Clinton High School.

Upon their arrival, the Lady Pirates endured a different experience by sitting through a late (4:30 p.m.) girls’ junior varsity game, and a boys’ (6 p.m.) junior varsity game before finally taking the court, after a long day at school, for a 7:30 p.m. game.

This came about because Clinton cancelled

the boys’ game as their football team is still involved – as the No. 1 seed – in the NCHSAA 2A state football playoffs.

Had they lost, the Lady Pirates could have used the above as an excuse, although making excuses is generally not their modusoperandi, but they did not lose.

Junior Sydney Hartgrove scored a game-andteam high 22 points, pulled down 19 rebounds, dished out four assists, and racked up five steals and Topsail returned home with a 5444 win over Clinton in a non-conference girls’ basketball game.

Junior classmates Bella Kross (12 points) and Shelby Parker (10 points) picked up some of the scoring slack, and senior Julia

Sullivan (seven points) backed Hartgrove up on the boards as the Lady Pirates picked up their third win (3-0) – victories coming on the road.

The Topsail girls won without their top bench reserve, senior Destiny Idol, and despite committing 18 turnovers and shooting 23for-61 (37.7 percent) – twofor-10 (20 percent) from three-point range – from the field.

“I only played six girls, so I think they might have gotten a little tired later in the game,” Topsail Coach Jay Kapiko said. “Not having Destiny (ankle injury) there takes away some of the rotation, so getting her back will give me some relief. I have to figure some things out with our depth, or lack thereof, maybe.

“Also, we didn’t finish very well. We missed a lot of shots inside, and that allowed them to hang around. We had about a 14-point lead in the third quarter and continued to miss some ‘bunnies (easy layups),’ inside on runouts, and they had a good third period and we didn’t, we let them get back in the game.

“Sydney played really well, not only scoring-wise but her motor was going the entire game. I think she may have set a school record for rebounds in a single game, I have to look that one up. But it’s a win and that’s what counts. We have three games in a row next week, so we have to get ready for that. White

This year’s team has an abundance of guards on the roster. The best of these guards may be senior standout Ja’Taybien Anders.

Mr. Anders is charged with running the offense for Coach Orr. However, his duties include much more.

He has to set the pace on both ends of the floor by playing hard on the defensive end and getting his teammates involved on the offensive end.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer As a junior on the Topsail Pirate varsity men’s basketball team, Jamison Long was working to get acclimated to the rigors of playing varsity basketball in the very tough MidEastern Conference.

He had a good year, averaging 11.5 points a game while snaring 3.6 rebounds a contest. He also averaged just over two assists and steals a game. However, that was just a prelude to things to come.

In the early stages of this season he has increased his scoring by two points and his rebounding by one.

Jamison plays bigger than his 5-10 size. He works hard in making sure his game is solid on both ends of the floor.

Topsail is 2-0 and aiming for the conference title.

In My Opinion So you want to be a high school coach? You say you want the glory and accolades of being a head coach at the high school level? Well, I got news for you my friends, it ain’t what it is made out to be.

I saw on the internet last weekend that one of my old friends and former coach at Trask was given the boot at an area high school. This man had a good record, did everything right and was an outstanding teacher as well. However, as the old saying goes, what have you done for me lately.

I have been around high schools as a writer for 20 years. I have witnessed some crazy things.

I watched as Bill White was fired despite the fact that his teams were winning and he did things the right way. Not only that, in my opinion he is one of the finest men that I have ever met.

Another friend of mine was let go from the same school despite winning 20 games – no rhyme, no reason.

A high school coach spends way too many hours on the job for the money that is paid. In Pender County, the coaches are grossly underpaid.

Ron Watson coached the Trask softball program through the early years and always went in the hole in relation to his pay.

He did it because he loved the sport and the kids.

It is easy to sit on the bleachers and criticize a coach for what you perceive to be poor judgment. He should have called a timeout. He should have played this kid or that kid. He just didn’t win enough. I have a novel idea. Let’s judge our coaches on what they teach our kids about the game of life. Let’s judge them on doing things the right way. Let’s judge them for getting up in the middle of the night upon hearing that a child has been in an accident or that a parent has died.

Let’s judge them for what they do away from the fields and the courts and the gyms.

So your kids team lost a game. Big deal. You know what is a big deal?

It’s a big deal that your kids coach loves each and every one of his or her players like their own.

I know, I am on my soapbox again. Well, Like I say, it’s just my opinion.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Last week saw the three county high schools playing an abbreviated schedule. The bulk of the action was on the wrestling mat where Topsail hosted a quad meet before traveling to Swansboro to participate in the Dirty Bird Tournament.

Ethan Blevins (106 pounds), Lucas Cotto (113), Ben Baker (120), and Alex Hopper (138) each won their respective weight classes at the Dirty Bird Tournament in Swansboro. Although there were no Titan gold medal winners, three grapplers made it to the finals.

Johnson brings hard work to the table at Pender

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When you first et a glimpse of the Pender Patriot men’s basketball team there is no doubt that they look the part. They have the size and athleticism to check off the visual part of being a winning high school basketball team.

But this team has much more than the look. They can play. One of the seniors on the team is the very athletic Asad Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is a 6-3 guard-forward on a team full of very good players.

He uses his athleticism to make plays. But he is not a one trick pony. Asad is a very intelligent player that uses that to make himself and his teammates better.

In their first game verse a very good Laney squad, Asad had a solid six points and four rebounds while playing hard on the defensive end. Asad Johnson brings hard work to the table.

Cougars maul Titans 56-39

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When South Brunswick head Coach Scott Wainwright brought his Varsity men’s basketball team to Trask last week, his team passed the eye test. They were bigger than the Titans and seemed to have more confidence during the warm-ups.

The Titans were opening their regular season with a revamped lineup for the second year in a row.

With only one returning starter in senior Watson Orr on the floor, things were different. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 56-39 nonconference win.

The bigger Cougars controlled the boards in the early going and took an 8-2 lead before Will Berry found a crease in the de-

fense and drove to the basket. South went on a 7-1 run to end the first quarter with a 10 point lead.

Trask outscored the Brunswick County crew by a 6-2 margin early in the second period and cut the lead to six at 17-11.

However, a 10-0 Cougar run buoyed by offensive rebounding gave the Cougars a 27-11 lead. The Titans limped into the locker room trailing 33-14.

If you were to have asked Trask Head Coach Rodney Orr what he expected to open the season he may have told you that the team would struggle on the boards and that they would be better in the latter part of the season. The Titans actually improved in the second half of the first game on the schedule.

Rober t Pridgen nailed a three pointer and Ja’Taybien Anders scored three points to keep the Titans within a point in the third quarter scoring. However, the home team Titans went into the fourth period trailing by 20 points.

Watson Orr showed his new found aggressiveness on the hardwood in the fourth quarter. He scored eight points in the final period. The Titans outscored South 14-11 but fail by 17 points.

Orr led the Titans with 13 points. Will Berry had seven points with Anders chipping in six.

The Titans are 0-1 for the year. They were at Swansboro on Tuesday and at South Brunswick on Friday.

“I think, softball-wise, what I am worried most about is being in the shape I need to be in, so that’s why I am trying to do extra work in my workouts and work with as many people as I can,” Lauren said. “Academic-wise, I am a little bit anxious, but I know they have the study halls and tutors I need to get succeed.”

Strnad said leaving high school is bittersweet.

“Part of me is ready to be done with high school, but it’s going to be the girls on the team that I am going to miss because I have played with these girls since the middle school, so leaving them will be the hardest thing,” Lauren said.

Addison Howard was the ace on the hill last year for the Lady Pirates, recording a 13-3 pitching record with an earned-run average of .167. Howard completed 12 games in 18 starts, pitched 104-1/3 innings, and committed one error in 82 fielding chances (.950 fielding percentage).

fourth quarter, holding Clinton to one field goal and two free throws while putting up 11 points to account for the final score.

The Topsail girls have busy week this week, paying hosts to the White Oak (2-1) on Wednesday, traveling cross-county to Pender (0-1) on Thursday, and welcoming Clinton (0-2) to Hampstead for a rematch on Friday.

The Pirate boys (2-0) will face White Oak (2-1) on Wednesday and Pender (0-2) on Thursday. Playing the Clinton game will be determined after the results of last Friday’s 2A football playoff game between topranked Clinton (11-1) vs. fourth-ranked West Craven (10-3).

Advanced Tai Chi on Tuesdays. Tai Chi has been proven to improve balance, reduce stress, enhance mental capacity, reduce blood pressure, alleviate arthritis pain and assist a faster recovery from strokes and heart attacks.

On a personal note we are so thankful for the blessings we have received this year. We have had volunteers make Thanksgiving treats for our Meals on Wheels clients as well as fall tomatoes donated for them.

Renovation Church generously renovated our flag walk with new pavers and donated beautiful gourds last week for decoration.

Others in the community continue to donate items for yard sale table, silent auction or to be used by our clients.
