NC Spot Festival Celebrating 50 Years By Andy Pettigrew, Post & Voice Editor/Publisher
One of the great long-standing traditions in the village of Hampstead turns 50 years-old this year: The North Carolina Spot Festival. This year’s festival will be held Sept. 28-29 along U.S. 17 in the same location the festival has occupied for years. Returning to the festival lineup is the Spot Festival Pageant, a tradition that was missing from the festivities last year. The pageant was held Sept. 14. Since the first festival was held in 1963, the event has survived all types of economic conditions and many types of weather; booms, busts, winds, rains and even hurricanes. But after several years of rain, last year’s festival had good weather and organizers are hoping for the same in 2013. For many, the sound of the celebrated fish sizzling in deep fryers is the heart of the festival. Opening ceremonies will be at 10 a.m. Saturday with the first hot spot dinners ready at 11 a.m. Dinners will be available Saturday until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Two well-known bands are scheduled to help celebrate 50 years of hot spots in Hampstead. The Embers will take the stage Saturday night at 7 p.m. and the Craig Wollard Band will perform Sunday afternoon from 1-5 p.m. Another Spot Festival tradition returns this year – fireworks. The sky will explode with color over Hampstead Saturday evening at 9 p.m. Arts and crafts booths will open both days at 10 a.m. Festival goers are encouraged to meet and talk with the many political candidates that add the event to their itineraries. Children will enjoy the many games and inflatables. Come celebrate 50 years of tradition in Hampstead at the N.C. Spot Festival Sept. 28-29. Spot Festival Pageant is Back By Kimberly Fisher, Special to the Post & Voice
Glitter, jewels, crowns, nerves and excitement was the theme of the first Spot Festival Scholarship Pageant in three years. Celebrating 50 years, The N.C.Spot Festival Scholarship Pageant has revamped their program, but maintains that they are staying true to the traditions that have surrounded the Spot Festival for the last 50 years. Hosted by WWAY’s Ashley Jacobs, contestants were poised to take the stage in two separate categories: Princess and Queen. Beginning the evening was Josie Lynn Boyd, daughter of Mike and Cindy Boyd; Savannah Marie Shirley, daughter of Adam and Julie Shirley; and Dakota Cherie Taylor, daughter of Mickey and TC Taylor. These three beautiful young ladies were all competing for the title of North Carolina Spot Festival Princess 2013. Contestants in the Princess Category were judged on a previous interview, talent and formal wear. The Princess contestants composed their own Spot Festival Poem that they recited to the crowd. Following the Princess’ on stage was Maria Blair Serrano, daughter of Rolando and Susan Serrano; Kayla Daniel Reavis, daughter of Ray and Donna Home; and Samantha Romero, daughter of Henry and Evelyn Romero. These three ladies were vying for the title of North Carolina Spot Festival Queen 2013. Queen contestants were judged on swimsuit, talent, formal wear, and interview. The Queen contestants were given questions about the history of Hampstead. Various visiting Queens wowed the crowd with modern dance, clogging, jazz tap, and performance dance. In the talent competition Princess Contestant Josie Boyd, entertained the crowd with a hilarious interpretation and tutorial of “Pig Latin”. Savannah Shirley, belted out “Live Out Loud” and left the crowd stunned. Dakota Taylor had the crowd’s toe’s tapping, while she performed a jazz routine with cheer incorporation to “Surfin’ USA”. Afterward, in the Queen Talent category, Maria Serrano performed a jazz routine to Betty Boop’s “I Wanna Be Loved by You.” Kayla Reavis executed a Broadway Routine to “Forget About the Boy.” Samantha Romero
sang Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly”, to a hushed audience. The People’s Choice Award in the Princess Category was awarded to Dakota Taylor who received 112 signatures from her community. The Ad Sales Award was awarded to Samantha Romero and Dakota Taylor, with over $100 in sales. First runner up in the Princess Category was Josie Boyd, and in the Queen category was Maria Serrano. Crowned 2013-2014 North Carolina Spot Festival Princess was Savannah Shirley. Savannah is a 12 year old seventh grade student who attends Dixon Middle School. Savannah is sponsored by her “Mee Maw and Paw Paw.” She is active in Odyssey of the Minds, a club at Dixon Middle School that extends and promotes higher level thinking. Crowned your 2013-2014 North Carolina Spot Festival Queen, was Samantha Romero. Samantha is a 21 year old East Carolina University Senior who enjoys reading, Lacrosse, music, Band, and Color Guard. Samantha would like to go to Law School in New York when she graduates.

What is Up with Spots? By Bill Messer Post & Voice Staff Writer
What about the little spot, the subject of all this attention at the Spot Festival? The spot, or spot croaker, (Leiostomus xanthurus) according to Wikipedia, is a native fish that shows up along our coast every year about this time. They’re easy to catch, and not too bright. For instance, they love bloodworms, but go after the pink artificial “bubblegum” bait just as vigorously, and you can pull ‘em in two-ata-time with a double rig, and there’s no doubt a triple rig would work even better. When the spot are running, they’re running. Much confusion exists about the dark spots on the fish’s sides. Many cultures claim ownership to St. Peter’s fish, his fingerprints on the fish’s sides marking the famous fifteen minutes of glory to recognize the spot’s pivotal role in the feeding of the 5,000, a notable spot dinner written about by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Egyptians claim the Nile tilapia, and South Sea islanders give the credit for being St. Peter’s thumbprint on their fish, the John Dory, but it’s an exceedingly ugly fish which would take way, way too much batter to conceal what’s underneath. Nope, our spot is just the right fish. It’s just large enough to feed Hampstead’s multitude easily, and attractive enough to show off through just a little batter dip. Crisp and tasty, with fries and slaw, the spot enjoys its last swim in a big kettle of cooking oil, just before serving. Come and enjoy the feast and festival.
