N.C. Spot Festival crowns new queens By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer

The N.C. Spot Festival Scholarship Pageant bid farewell to its eight 2015 Queens Sept. 11. Last year’s queens included Baby Miss Paislee Graham, Mini Miss Parker Wells, Tiny Miss Maddie Miller, Little Miss Dana Solomon, Young Miss Sydney McCoy, Teen Miss Taylor Horrell, Mermaid Miss Amanda Barnette and Miss Jaime Verteramo. The sendoff was bittersweet for the group of girls that have worked avidly to spread the word about the N.C. Spot Festival across the state. Throughout the year, the young ladies raised funds for their platforms, served as volunteers and celebrated their sisterhood together. Eight new lovely queens were crowned at the pageant. The newly awarded Queens for the 2016 N.C. Spot Festival include Baby Miss Lillianna Hill, Mini Miss Cambri Lankas, Tiny Miss Bailey Smith, Little Miss Ava Harris, Mermaid Miss Josie Boyd, Young Miss Kaylee Jernigan, Teen Miss Chloe Castles, and Miss Brooklynn Helstley. The winners were embraced into the Spot Festival family with shimmering crowns, vibrant bouquets from Surf City Florist

and lots of other terrific prizes. These ladies will start out their year reigning as Spot Queens at the Spot Festival Sept. 24. 11 lovely ladies competed in this year’s pageant. The pageant was a weekendlong event with rehearsal on Saturday; followed by a dinner sponsored by Hooters, Hwy 55, Jebby’s, Hardees, Dominos, and Subway inside the BP station. The Sunday morning interviews began at 11 and were followed by the pageant at 3 p.m. Since the ladies were crowned, their schedules have already been filled with activity. Their first official outing took place at Rucker Johns for a contract signing dinner, followed by preparations for the festival kickoff. The N.C. Spot Festival Scholarship Pageant provides an educational scholarship and prizes to eight young ladies each year. The winners are selected to represent the Hampstead Community as public relations queens. They attend functions at neighboring community festivals and celebrations such as parades, coronations, community events and at luncheons for visiting dignitaries. The Queens are also en-

couraged to volunteer by helping local businesses and civic groups with fundraising and public relations promotions. Each girl is required to raise a designated amount of money based on her age. Proceeds are then divided between the Spot Festival Scholarship fund and a non-profit charity of their choice. In 2014 alone, the Spot Festival and Queens raised more than $50,000 that went back to the local Topsail Schools, Pender EMS and Fire, Hunger NC, Wilmington Teen Suicide Prevention, The North Carolina Aquarium Foundation and Clean Water. They have also worked with Pink Heals for Breast Cancer, Make A Wish Foundation, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and more. In 2015, the girls have worked additionally with organizations such as The Fallen Fire Fighter Association, Canines for Service, Hampstead Kiwanians, Cape Fear Equine Rescue, Missing Our Mermaid Suicide Prevention, Wayne Pregnancy Center, The Charlie Ramsey Hat Drive, and The Good Shepard House. Teaming with South Topsail PTO, the Spot Queens provided complete Christmases for five

children and four adults in 2014; and for six children and 5 adults with North Topsail PTO in 2015. They hope to be able to do even more this year. The pageant is run by volunteers who work very hard to make the N.C. Spot Festival Scholarship Pageant a quality, well-respected event. Shannon Rinko and Kelly Jelley have been the directors of the pageant since it was restarted in 2013. “It is the desire of the committee to give each candidate the best experience she can possibly have, no matter what the outcome of the pageant may be. We are looking for inner quality and intelligence rather than the most beautiful face and figure. We are searching for some really nice young ladies who want to give their time to represent the community of Hampstead,” the ladies said. To learn more about the pageant, look for N.C. Spot Festival Scholarship Pageant on Facebook or visit ncspotfestivalpagean. wixsite.com/ spotfestivalpageant
