Classics Postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities
Study all aspects of antiquity in one of the leading departments in the UK and the world.
Our Classics department at King’s is one of the leading departments in the UK and the world. It’s a place where you can study the literature, history, material and visual culture, and reception of the ancient civilisations which developed around and beyond the Mediterranean basin, from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine Empire. WHY STUDY WITH US?
• You can choose from an
exciting and diverse range of modules, involving regular small seminar classes, followed by a research-led dissertation completed during the summer. • Our programmes are intercollegiate, giving you access to modules at Royal Holloway and University College London in addition to King’s, extending our subject coverage and making our programmes some of the most varied, stimulating and comprehensive in the world.
• Our partnership with
the Institute of Classical Studies gives you access to the best Classics research library in the country and the richest programme of Classics-related seminars and conferences in the UK. • Our special links with London’s leading museums and cultural institutions will further enhance your study of Classics. Other opportunities include our unique annual Greek Play or an extended fieldtrip to Classical lands courtesy of the Rumble Travel Fund.
DEGREES OFFERED We offer MA programmes in Ancient History, in Classics, in Classical Art and Archaeology, and in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies. These are combined in a single department. You have the flexibility to create a suite of modules specific to the programme as well as take some options outside of the subject area, or even the department, where appropriate. You can also acquire specialist skills, whether in languages, epigraphy or palaeography. Each MA has its own core module which introduces you to advanced study in the subject and prepares you for your dissertation.

of our academic staff and the excellent research environment of London. Research in the Classics has always been a collective endeavour. Both our academic staff and research students reflect the global dimension of the subject. ABOUT OUR RESEARCH
• We offer supervision in
all aspects of the Classical world and its reception and are the only Classics department in London to cover the material culture of antiquity, classical archaeology and art history. • We also boast specialists in reception studies and neo-Latin literature. • Collaborative work with the Digital Humanities department is strong, especially in major research projects (some of which provide studentships). • Being in London means access to world-class research facilities at the Institute of Classical Studies and its Library.
• The Institute hosts a range
of seminar series in all the Classical disciplines so that you can listen to and meet international scholars presenting cutting-edge research. The Warburg Institute (for research on the reception of antiquity), the British Museum, and the British Library are all at hand to support advanced research. • Our departmental seminar series, to which you would contribute, will give you experience of preparing and delivering research papers. • We actively encourage our students to attend conferences both in the UK and abroad, and give financial support to this end.
