Study at a world-leading and internationally excellent centre of French in the UK.

We have been recognised as ‘excellent’ for the quality of our teaching and ranked second nationally in the Research Assessment Exercise (2008). The majority of our research – which shapes and inspires our teaching – is rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. WHY STUDY WITH US?

• Distinctive to King’s are

the broad range of options available, a high degree of flexibility, and an orientation towards the study of issues in literary and critical theory through reading and debate. • We have a vibrant, successful graduate student culture across our MA programmes. You will be part of our strong community of research and MA students, with Arts & Humanities Research Council and alumni-funded studentships, all contributing to the field of French studies in the UK and beyond.

• We offer intellectual and

academic training through our main MA courses and supervision of dissertations. Our graduates are encouraged to participate in the wider research culture of the department, the College, and the disciplines in which they are working. • Our MA is an ideal preparation for further research or careers in teaching, journalism, cultural management, financial sector and the EU.

DEGREES OFFERED • MA in French Literature and Culture • MA in Critical Methodologies Our programmes offer a core module in research methodology and critical theory plus a wide choice of optional modules from across all periods of French and Francophone literature, from Medieval French to Contemporary French Women’s Writing. • Our research is distinguished

by energetic dialogue between staff members and research students, which takes place through a regular research seminar, reading groups, and a vibrant culture of shared interests. • We have strengths in: • all periods of French and francophone literature • Postcolonial / francophone studies • French cinema and visual culture • Modern French thought and contemporary French philosophy • Our staff are involved in the Early Modern Forum inter-departmental seminar series, the Postcolonial Studies Network, the Centre for Late Antique and Medieval Studies, Queer@King’s, the Centre for Enlightenment Studies,

the Centre for Modern Literature & Culture and Comparative Literature. We offer additional training • through undergraduate teaching where possible and regular research-training through the Institute for Modern Languages Research (IMLR). • Many of our recent PhD graduates have gone on to successful careers in academia, teaching, journalism, and cultural management. • We offer opportunities for postgraduate research students to spend time abroad at the University of Geneva and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon and Paris as well as a salaried teaching exchange programme with the Université de Paris X at Nanterre.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY ABOUT US When I decided to write a doctorate, I was attracted to the Department of French at King’s as it is very much a dynamic, up-andcoming department with a broad range of interests, which helps me avoid becoming too intellectually insular. I was also keen to base myself in London for the general cultural and social benefits, and more specifically for the academic resources available. Emma, French MPhil/Phd
