WELCOME

Dear friends from near and far W

elcome to Lääne-Virumaa, the fifth largest Estonian county by population and the third largest by area. For many, Lääne-Virumaa means Rakvere, and why not. Even among ourselves, we have referred to the entire county as Rakvere for our visiting friends from elsewhere. Starting from the castle on Vallimägi Hill in Rakvere to Viru Folk held at Käsmu – everything is in Greater Rakvere. Our county is an extraordinarily diverse and ideal place for holiday-making, enjoying the natural environment and taking part in traditional events. Our museums offer a good overview of the history and people of the county. The rich manor culture highlights quite a few important historical names. The beautiful countryside and the long coastline means people have the opportunity to hike, engage in sports, and enjoy picturesque landscapes. Our county today has eight different local government areas, which all have a lot to offer, particularly to visitors. The Vinni rural municipality has Emumäe Hill and the beautiful views from its viewing platform. There is also the Vinni Sports Centre, which hosts athletes from across the Baltic States. Väike-Maarja has a beautiful central square with its statue of the legendary GrecoRoman wrestler Georg Lurich, the curious sights of the Struve Geodetic Arch, and Kiltsi Manor, as well as Moe distillery with its museum and tasting facil-

ities. And of course, Jäneda Manor with its Black Stallion Stable restaurant. The Viru-Nigula rural municipality has the seaside city of Kunda, the Lontova Adventure Park and the mystical Toolse Castle. The Haljala rural municipality has the most gorgeous country road from Käsmu to Võsu, the restaurants Mere 38 and Wöse, and all the pearls of the Lahemaa National Park. It is namely Lahemaa that every school child knows both for its stunning natural beauty and magnificent manor culture. The manors of Vihula, Sagadi and Palmse are all different, offering accommodation, spa treatment and gourmet experiences. Altja Tavern and boathouses, the Jaanioja Tourist Farm and the cooperative network of Genuine Lahemaa – all are open to visitors all year round. The Kadrina rural municipality takes pride in the lakes of Neeruti and Viitna, as well as the re-awakened Buxhöwden Manor. Right next to Rakvere, the Arkna Manor will soon gain new significance and appearance. The tourist-oriented manor produces one of the best cheeses in Estonia. In this way, Rakvere could even slip our mind, but this is where one of Estonia’s most beautiful cinemas is located, along with the Police Museum, a picturesque Public Garden, the magnificent Vallimägi Hill with its castle and bull, our oak forest, the urban-style Central Square and one of the best spas in Estonia – Aqva

HISTORY

HISTORY People have lived in Virumaa for about 9000 years. The oldest known settlement is near Kunda and it is one of the most famous ones in Northern Europe. More recent settlements after Kunda have been discovered at various places by the Narva River. Virumaa played a significant role in the ancient freedom fight of Estonians. Äntu Punamäe or Agelinde Fortress is one of the most original and interesting in Estonia. The largest fortress in Southern Virumaa used to stand at the Southern end of a long, narrow ridge. This stronghold must have played a fairly significant role in the struggles for power in northern Estonia between the Danes and the Germans in the first half of the 13th century but in 1233 it was invaded by the troops of the Order, it fell out of usage and stayed in ruins. According to the Livonian Chronicle cardinal Wilhelm, a bishop of Modena, a personal representative of pope Honorio III, stayed in Agelinde in 1226.

Photo: Marianne Loorents/Virumaa Teataja

Not far from the Fortress of Agelinde there is the hill of Ebavere where according to the Livonian Chronicle of Henry, Tarapita, god of the people of Saaremaa, was born. Tarapita’s flight from the hill of Ebavere to Saaremaa is actually believed to be the route of the meteorite of Kaali. The history of Virumaa is to a large degree reflected in a fairly large number of its fortresses. The first data about Narva Castle are from 1254 when it was located on the other bank of the river. The oldest parts of the present day castle date from approximately 1300, the tower of Pikk Hermann was built in the 15th and the 16th century. The restored northern courtyard of the castle copies a 17th century merchants’ city district and it accommodates a museum.

20

HISTORY Rakvere Castle and Narva Castle are the two stone fortresses built in Virumaa under the Danish rule. Rakvere Castle is located at the scenic Vallimägi, erected on the site of an ancient fortress. The ancient fortress of Rakvere was probably built in the second half of the first millennium. In 1220 the wooden fortress of Rakvere was invaded by the Danes who replaced it by a stone fortress, first mentioned in history books in 1252. Rakvere Castle was the seat of the bailiff of the Order. The bailiwick of Rakvere covered the area of approximately today’s Lääne-Viru county. The castle was severely damaged in the Livonian War. During the war Russians had built a fortification zone from stones, boards and oak blocks around the fortress. On 27 July 1579 Ivo Schenkenberg, a legendary army commander, was taken prisoner by Russians during an attempted seizure of the castle, he was taken to Pskov where he was killed in the presence of the Russian czar Ivan the Terrible. Today, Rakvere Castle operates as a museum including exhibitions of the history of the Livonian Order, of swords and of mediaeval torture. The castle pub is named after Ivo Schenkenberg. Vao Tower Fortress was probably built in the second half of the 14th century. It is quadrangular and four-square, built from local limestone. The fortress has four floors, including the cellar, two bottommost are vaulted. Vao Tower Fortress was a permanent residence of a vassal, indicated by the existence of a dansker (toilet), a handwash spot, a chapel and a fireplace on the residential floor. Toolse Castle is the most recent and the northenmost fortress of the Livonian Order.

21

HISTORY The construction of Toolse Castle began in 1471 under the rule of Johann Volthaus von Herse, an order master of Livonia. The location of the castle was defined by a good spot for harbour because one of the aims of the construction of the castle in addition to protecting the coast from the pirates was the development of trade.

The larger and better-known fortress was built in about the 11th-12th century, the smaller fortification which is believed to date from the 6th century, had probably been destroyed on fire by then.

Toolse Castle was severely damaged in the Livonian War and henceforth it lost its significance. The castle was entirely destroyed in the Northern War.

Jakob von Taube began building Purtse Vassal Fortification in 1533. The fortress located by the Tallinn-Narva highway has an exciting history and it is a place worth exploring for both historians and the curious. The fortress was restored in the years 1987-1990.

Pada Fortress is a striking structure for its impressive size and its strong defence buildings. There are actually two fortification sites in Padaorg, located at about 300 metres from one another, close to the Tallinn-Narva highway.

In 1986-1987 the gate walk of the larger Pada Fortress extending to 8.5 metres was restored.

Near the fortress there is a monument and a memorial park to the victims of Evil picturing the Estonian map of pain with numbers of deportees by the stalinist occupation regime marked on each county.

KNOW THA T… YOU

Throughout centuries Virumaa has been devastated by wars. In 1268 the bloodiest medieval battle of Estonia – the battle of Rakvere – took place, marking the settlement borders of Estonians for centuries.

One of the bearers of history in Virumaa is the Chapel of Ilumäe, remarkable for its stained glass coats of arms on its windows. When the old wooden chapel became out of date, a new and more spacious stone chapel was built. The windows of Ilumäe Chapel comprise fifteen fragile stained glass coats of arms

from the era of the wooden chape, from 1729. Surprisingly, only two of them belong to aristocracy, the rest belong to commoners, including local peasants. Throughout centuries Virumaa has been devastated by wars. In 1268 the bloodiest medieval battle of Estonia – the battle of Rakvere – took place, marking the settlement borders of Estonians for centuries. About ten battles of Narva are listed in reference books, the most fierce ones took place in the Northern War and the Second World War. The battle of the summer 1944 near Narva at Sinimäed was the bloodiest battle ever fought on Estonian soil. German army troops mostly comprising Estonians, were holding back the attacking Red Army forces, thus enabling approximately 100 000 people to flee the Soviet occupation to the West. Today the battle site is marked by a memorial square and a museum.

ARCHITECTURAL GEMS Devastated by wars, Virumaa has very few preserved ancient architectural gems. The baroque town hall of Narva, built 1668–1671 is one of them, although it has been restored to a large extent.

beautiful school building in Estonia. Next to the school building there is the Pauluse Vabaduskirik, designed by the same architect. The local government is planning to convert this into the Arvo Pärt Concert Hall.

The bottle stoves of the first cement factory in Kunda from the end of the 19th century are of architectural interest. The town of Sillamäe, a true model of Stalinist architecture, is definitely worth visiting. The centre of Sillamäe was built as a neoclassical town in the second half of the 1940s. Within a couple of years Sillamäe saw the construction of 70 two and three-storey apartment blocks and 280 single-storey apartment houses, a hospital complex of 12 buildings, several kindergartens and nurseries, a secondary school, a civic centre, two cinemas, an executive committee building, shops and canteens.

The modern style of the central square of Rakvere, completed in 2004 to replace the historic market place, came as a shock for almost everybody but people have accepted it now. Children have a lot of fun climbing and riding the aurochs, the symbol of Rakvere. A modern bus station, yellow lamps and a fountain create an exciting atmosphere in a modern city. Beside the central square stand the market hall designed by Ferdinand Adoff and one of the most imposing bank buildings in Estonia with its new extension known as the Tark Maja (Smart House), which is home to the city government. The central square also has the sculpture “A Young Man on a Bicycle Listening to Music” from 2010, dedicated to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, an honorary citizen of Rakvere.

One of the most remarkable buildings of Rakvere is the vocational school building. The main building of the school was completed in 1915 and back then it was considered to be a perfect schoolhouse in tsarist Russia, being the most elaborate from the architectural point of view as well as in terms of its practical value. A pedestrian promenade commencing at the central square will eventually run as a linear park along Seminari street through the town to the vocational school. There are also plenty of truly interesting buildings in Narva-Jþesuu, including modern sanatorium complexes and old wooden houses with their unique decorative fretwork. The majestic Aleksander’s Cathedral towers above the river in Narva.

SIGHTS TO SEE IN LÄÄNE-VIRU COUNTY A beautiful meandering coastline on the Gulf of Finland Lääne-Viru County has more than 130 kilometres of coastline, most of which – about a hundred kilometres – is in the Haljala rural municipality, dotted with a multitude of tiny coastal villages, each one more picturesque than the previous. The most well-known of these is the village of Käsmu, first mentioned in 1453 and often also referred to as the Captains’ Village, as many seamen have come from here, also including numerous captains and first mates. In the history of the village, the Kristenbruns – a family of Käsmu ship owners, sailing ship builders and seamen played a prominent role. Today, the ship-building traditions are kept alive by Aarne Vaik, the host of the Käsmu Maritime Museum.

SIGHTSEEINGS to its glorious history, in the past decade the village of Käsmu has become a renowned venue for various events, hosting the concert series Beautiful Concerts in Käsmu, and the Viru Folk Festival. The Altja fishing village is equally authentic, with houses standing along one village street as is so characteristic of coastal villages. The village boasts restored net sheds and the swinging green as well as an old thatched tavern which even today offers food and drink.

Unique and exciting manors The manors of Sagadi, Palmse and Vihula are widely known as the three pearls of Lahemaa National Park. These work as partners and each have their own niche in which they excel. The Vihula manor complex has a stylish restaurant, a luxurious spa and a hotel. The Palmse manor is one of the most unique restored manor facilities in the Baltic region. The magnificent 18th century manor building which used to belong to the von Pahlen family has been

Palmse provides a splendid overview of the lifestyle of the landed overlords and offers the opportunity to walk in its park, taste its wines or dine at the tavern. Sagadi manor is considered as one of the most remarkable in Estonia. The activities at Sagadi manor are largely related to forestry and nature – the former granary and coach house host a forest museum where visitors can study everything the forest has had to offer our forebears and what the forest means to us today. The main building of the Sagadi manor complex is a great display of manor architecture and interior design, complete with furniture from its heyday. The now privately owned Neeruti manor – Buxhöwden – which is one of the most remarkable examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Estonia, has also risen from ashes like a phoenix.

Lasila manor was where the world-famous biologist Karl Ernst von Baer spent part of his childhood. Kiltsi manor was home to the wellknown seafarer and scholar Adam Johann von Krusestern. The latter two manors are now used as schoolhouses. The main building of Porkuni manor with its octagonal tower also hosted a school until 2011. The manor house now needs a new owner. The manor complex also includes a gate tower, which has survived from the diocesan castle built 1477–1479 and now operates as the Limestone Museum.

Many of these trails are a part of the Oandu–Aegviidu–Ikla hiking trail that runs through Estonia and forms an integral trail with over 40 km in Lahemaa. The Beaver Track, Käsmu Biking Track, Oandu Botanical Track and Käsmu Nature and Culture Track are just a few more examples. The 14 km hiking trail in the Neeruti Landscape Conservation Area offers a good overview of the natural assets of the region. The

area has become well-known due to sites from the national epic Kalevipoeg (Kalev’s Son) written by Estonian author and doctor Fr. R. Kreutzwald, who was born in Jõepere. The sites include the ploughing furrows of Kalev’s Son, the Saddle Hill left from the saddle of his horse, and the lakes created by his horse’s kidneys – Orajärv, Eesjärv, Tagajärv, Sinijärv and many others. The trail runs along eskers that were created 10,000 years ago. The Viitna Landscape Conservation Area boasts the Viitna Nature Study Track which takes us on a walk around Lake Pikkjärv which is a popular swimming spot in summer. The somewhat capricious but picturesque Porkuni Lake, entwined in legends, also offers opportunities to enjoy summer pleasures. The lake consists of four parts: Suurjärv, Aiajärv, Iiri järv and Alumine järv, and is the beginning of the Valgejõgi River. Oh, and why is it capricious? Porkuni Lake is fed by springs and has the habit of drying up occasionally. The bottom of the lake was last seen bare in 2015. The lake’s peculiar character was at one time even more evident in its floating islets, which by now have attached themselves to the shore.

SIGHTSEEINGS In order to enjoy the beautiful nature of Estonia from higher up, one should head to Emumägi Hill, which is the highest point in the Pandivere Upland and all of northern Estonia. The hill has a 21.5 metre wooden viewing tower with a view across the forests. Besides the viewing tower, Emumägi also has a boulevard of wooden sculptures made by cultural societies, a tree stump house, a sunrise house and an old graveyard.

Kunda, the City of Cement Kunda became known as the City of Cement after a large cement factory was commissioned in the city at the end of the 19th century. The cement dust released from the factory chimneys turned the city uniformly grey. Today, modern equipment keeps the air clean and lets the colours shine, but the name has still remained. The history of cement production in the city is displayed at the Kunda Cement Museum. A 19th century shaft furnace has been preserved near the museum and the permanent museum exhibition includes mechanisms and tools used at the factory, as well as historical photographs and documents. The museum also collects handprints of famous people, imprinted in cement. Among others, there are the cement handprints of actor Mikk Mikiver who lived in a summer

house belonging to Georg Ots in Võsu, and singer Tanel Padar who grew up in Haljala. Right outside the city of Kunda, in a primeval valley beside Kunda River, we can find the Lontova Adventure Park, which offers adrenaline-boosting extreme experiences on various adventure tracks or an opportunity to just enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. The ruins of Toolse Castle are also located near the city of Kunda. Toolse Castle is one of the newest of the medieval castles of the northern coast of Estonia, and the most seaward castle in Estonia.

SIGHTS TO SEE IN THE CITY OF RAKVERE The Rakvere Castle with the Vallimägi Hill Through time, Rakvere Castle has belonged to Danish kings and the religious knights of the Livonian Order as well as to the Swedish and Polish states. The rule of the Livonian Order was the longest, with the Castle being an important link in the eastern defence system of the monastic state of the Teutonic Order. At the end of antiquity, an old Estonian stronghold called Tarvanpää stood on the spot of the current Rakvere Castle. From 1238 to 1346, Rakvere – then called Wesenberg in German (literal translation from the Estonian Tarvanpää) – was part of the Duchy of Estonia. The King of Denmark was

the Duke of Estonia, but the country was ruled on his behalf by a Lord Lieutenant who resided in Tallinn. Rakvere Castle belonged to the King but was ruled by a commander-in-chief who answered to the Lord Lieutenant. In the middle of the 13th century, the Danes replaced the ancient Estonian stronghold with the first stone fortifications and by the middle of the 14th century the Danes had erected a full curtain-wall castle on Vallimägi Hill. After the beginning of the Uprising of the Night of St. George, the vassals of the Harju and Viru regions threw themselves under the protection of the Livonian Order, and the Order thus became the owner of Rakvere Castle from 16 May 1343. Rakvere Castle was thoroughly rebuilt during the rule of the Or-

SIGHTSEEINGS der. Over 300 years of construction, the simple curtain wall castle became a convent building that better suited the needs of the Livonian Order as a religious order of knighthood. During the years of the Livonian War, the castle belonged to Russians who built another line of fortifications around it, using stones extracted from the local houses and the Franciscan Monastery. During the Polish-Swedish War from 1600 to 1629, the Poles partly blew up the Castle in 1605. The Swedes later followed suit and the castle has since then stood in ruins. In 1635, the Swedes deleted Rakvere Castle from the list of fortresses.

Room displays a scene from the Dance Macabre depicted using mannequins, and Hell has been set up as a labyrinth in which visitors get a glimpse of how medieval people imagined the horrors and torture to be inflicted in Hell. At the barber’s, visitors can diagnose various diseases using the methods of medical science from the Middle Ages. In addition, various exhibitions and workshops are open and visitors can dine at the Schenckenberg Inn which offers dishes prepared according to medieval recipes.

Today, the castle walls have been restored and the castle has been turned into a theme park which takes visitors back to the dark Middle Ages. The massive gates could well bear a sign saying, ‘Welcome to the 16th century!’ Right at the gates, visitors can dress in erastyle clothes, which are also worn by the castle staff. In summer, geese and a donkey stroll around in the courtyard, horses can be heard nickering in their stalls and a family of mischievous goats keeps the castle staff busy. What can you do at the Castle? Every day, the cannon is shot in the front courtyard and visitors can hold bow and arrow competitions and visit the torture chamber with its exhibition of medieval torture equipment. The Death

A magnificent bull looks down on the town below Vallimägi Hill is also the place where one of the most important symbols of Rakvere stands – the sculpture of a bull (tarvas), made by sculptor Tauno Kangro. The bull sculpture was unveiled on 15 June 2002 when Rakvere celebrated 700 years from having been granted town privileges under the Lübeck Law. The sculpture is 7.1 metres long and 3.5 metres high, 3.4 wide across the horns and weighs

A sculpture erected to a world-famous composer In the midst of the yellow cupolas of Rakvere Central Square stands a sculpture dedicated to the world-famous composer Arvo Pärt. The sculpture is called ‘A young man on a bicycle listening to music’ and was unveiled on the composer’s 75th birthday on 11 September 2010. The sculpture is the work of artists Aivar Simson (Seaküla Simson, Simson von Seakyll) and Paul Mänd. The sculpture is dedicated to Arvo Pärt who spent his youth and commenced his musical studies in Rakvere. Inspiration for the work comes from the composer’s habit of going to the Market Square (the current Central Square) to listen to radio programmes and music broadcasts from the loudspeakers installed on top of a telegraph pole.

At the Citizen’s Museum, you can see how people lived 100 years ago without electricity, sewerage and the internet. The museum offers visitors a chance to take a look at the furnishings of a living-room, bedroom, dining room and kitchen from a century ago, and a 1930s apartment in the other half of the building. The courtyard building houses a small cobbler’s workshop where visitors can try their hand at the cobbler’s trade, and an old laundry room where visitors can experience washing clothes without a washing machine. The newest exhibitions are displayed at the Rehbinder Exhibition House, which opened at the end of 2017. There are also quite a few permanent displays, such as the weapons room with a sword dating back 2,700 years, and a church property room. The room containing items at least 300 years old, boasts a mammoth’s tooth, while the dignified 1930s’ room creates a cosy mood. The exhibition house also organises temporary exhibitions.

Aqva Hotel & Spa

Photo: Meelis Meilbaum/Virumaa Teataja

Most of the accommodation in Lääne-Virumaa is assembled in Rakvere. There are four hotels in the county centre, the biggest is Aqva hotel with 120 rooms with all amenities and beds for 240 people. In the immediate vicinity of Aqva hotel is Art Hotel and a little further from that Hotel Wesenbergh. A short walk from the centre of town, just near the Rakvere oak grove is hotel Villa Theresa. Visitors who appreciate the historic flavour of old towns can try accommodation at the Katariina Guesthouse (Pikk Street) and Pikk Majutus Guest Apartments. Niine Guesthouse is located in the outskirts of Rakvere. There are also bigger and smaller guest apartments. People who want to experience

sleeping in a Baltic German manor house, should head outside the centre to Sagadi, Palmse or Vihula manor. Hotels are set up in all three manor complexes. By the way, Vihula Manor was named the best manor accommodation by the Estonian Manor Association. Nature lovers should think about sleeping in guesthouses or tourist farms like Tristani Guesthouse (Kadrina), Õnnela Guesthouse (Kadrina parish), Adami Country Guesthouse (Haljala parish) or Laululinnu Guesthouse (Tapa parish). Larger seaside guesthouses include the Vergi Guesthouse, Eisma Guesthouse, Rannaliiv Guesthouse and Männisalu Recreation Centre in Võsu (all in Haljala parish).

FOOD

WHERE TO EAT Despite Rakvere being a small town, there are cafes and dining venues for every taste. Although there are no vegan cafés or restaurants, meat free dishes have been added to many menus. Of course, every hotel has its own place for clients to have a meal, sometimes even two places. Aqva hotel welcomes clients eat at their á la carte restaurant Fiore or at the lounge Fresco. The latter is especially popular among families with children visiting the spa. Hotel Villa Theresa also has its own restaurant, hotel Wesenbergh welcomes clients to its pub and the Art Hotel to their Art Café across the road.

Grill pub Sarvik Photo: Marianne Loorents/Virumaa Teataja

Cafes and dining venues are actually everywhere, and the food served there is diverse: snacks and cakes with coffee, heartier meals from the Rohuaia cafe, Rakvere Kuursaal, Laada cafe, the cafe at the Niine Guesthouse, Päts pizza café, restaurant Katariina Kelder or Rakvere Theatre cafe. The historical tavern Berliini Trahter welcomes diners in the centre of Rakvere. To experience spicier Asian cuisine, one should head to the Bamboo Garden; sushi lovers can choose between two places: Sushi Tiger and Ocean Sushi. Ararat Grill is oriented towards grilled dishes and large portions; 12 Kuud surprises with Slavic food; Grillers is known for being the best burger place. Perhaps the most unique place is located at the medieval stronghold and is called the Schenkenberg tavern.

Most catering places by the sea open their doors some time before the beginning of the summer season, including Võsu harbour cafe Wöse, restaurant Mere38 by the Võsu main street, Võsu Grill Bar and Altja Tavern. Only O Kõrts is open all year round.

If you are visiting the shopping centre you don’t have to go hungry there either: Kodused Toidud in the Vaala shopping centre offers refreshments, Babyback will treat you to USstyle barbeque dishes and Subway sandwiches are in the Põhjakeskus shopping centre.

People can dine at Viitna Tavern, Artur’s Shashlik Bar or Aluvere Caucasian Shaslik while traveling from one place to another. The most legendary eating place in Tapa is Vaksali Trahter and the newest restaurant is called Roger.

The same goes for the manors and their restaurants that are further away. The premium Vihula Manor Restaurant, Palmse Manor Restaurant (advance bookings only) and Sagadi Manor Restaurant each are unique like the manors themselves. Palmse manor, named one of the best manors for dining by Estonian Manor Association, does not only offer dining experiences in its restaurant but welcomes diners to its tavern for more traditional dishes.

SIGHTS TO SEE AND SUMMER EVENTS IN IDA-VIRU COUNTY

Tuham채e Downhill

Ida-Virumaa welcomes visitors seeking excitement and adventure. It could even be said that the entire Ida-Virumaa is indeed the Adventureland of Estonia. Why is Ida-Viruma an adventureland? An adventureland is a place where the coolest adventures in Estonia await you. For instance, underground (the Estonian Mining Museum), at the top of a hill (the Kivi천li Adventure Centre), on water (the Aidu Watersports Centre), in the tree tops (the Alutaguse Recreational and Sports Centre), on the border (Narva), on the longest beaches in Estonia (Narva-J천esuu and Peipsi), on the high-

est coastal cliffs (Ontika) and in other places. Adventureland is Ida-Virumaa and there are new adventures popping up all the time. Adventureland has its own Adventureland Newsletter, Adventureland TV, and Facebook page which covers the latest news. Ida-Virumaa offers meaningful sights to see, either created by natural forces or dating back centuries into the history of the border areas between Eastern and Western cultures. A special feature here is the re-use of industrial regions from the previous century, such as the Kohtla Mining Museum, the Kivi천li Adventure Centre on a reclaimed ash hill or the Aidu canals in a former quarry. In addition, the

45

SIGHTSEEINGS marks left by the Soviet Union in the former industrial regions of Sillamäe and KohtlaJärve also offer excitement and nostalgia. The region includes 11 record holders: • Narva Castle, the largest Nordic fortification complex with its bastions from the 17th century, • Europe’s largest former textile factory, the Kreenholm Manufacturing Plant from the 20th century, • Estonia’s longest sandy beach is located at Narva-Jõesuu and is 14 km long, • the largest preserved complex of 1950s

Stalinist architecture at Sillamäe, • Estonia’s largest landscape park – Oru Park at Toila, • Estonia’s highest limestone cliff at Ontika, the highest on the Sweden-St. Petersburg Klint, • Estonia’s highest waterfall at Valaste, • the highest artificial hill in the Baltic region, at Kiviõli, • The only active convent in the Baltic region, at Kuremäe, • Estonia’s longest sandy beach on the northern shore of Lake Peipsi – 36 km long, • Estonia’s carpentry capital at Avinurme.

Narva Castle The heart of Narva Castle, the largest fortification complex in the Nordic region, stands right by Narva River, opposite the Russian Ivangorod Castle 150 metres across the river.

Today, seven bastions around Narva Castle have been preserved and visitors can explore the largest, the Victoria Bastion, and the casemates. The castle’s permanent exhibition is quite new and offers visitors the opportunity to enter the bastion tunnels where the exhib-

SIGHTSEEINGS its and a guide take them on a journey through time from the Swedish era till after World War II. Narva Castle also includes the Northern Yard, which is a courtyard with handicraft workshops in the style of the 17th century. This is where grand events like the Medieval Festival and re-enactment of the Battle of Narva are held and where life in the summer takes on the rhythm of the 17th century and runs according to folk custom and the folk calendar. Besides permanent exhibitions, the Castle also offers visitors various temporary exhibitions. Right by the old Narva Town Hall stands the modern building of the Narva College of the University of Tartu, where Café Muna offers delicious food.

The entire northern coast as a resort: from Liimala to NarvaJõesuu Just a 15-minute drive from Narva, you will find Narva-Jõesuu with its spa hotels, pine forests and long sandy beach. Visitors should keep in mind that a fee has to be paid for parking everywhere at NarvaJõesuu in the summer. Photo: Tairo Lutter/Virumaa Teataja

47

SIGHTSEEINGS Another place definitely worth a visit is Sillamäe with its Soviet-era architecture, particularly the stylish cultural centre and the grand promenade. Instead of the Tallinn-Narva Road, you should drive along the historical Old Narva Road that runs along the limestone cliff, offering truly scenic views across the Gulf of Finland and dotted with cosy cafes and restaurants ideal for a bite to eat. The coastal road along the cliff also takes you to the Valaste Waterfall which is a sight to see in any season. About 10 kilometres towards Tallinn from Valaste, you will find the Saka Manor complex with its exhibition of rocks, a line of trenches and the Kivisilla Waterfall. You can also climb the Sea Tower from where

you can even see the Tütarsaared islands in good weather. If you turn off the main road towards Toila, you will find Oru Park, the largest landscape park in Estonia, where the summer residence of President Konstantin Päts used to stand. Today, only the stairs and the foundations remain of the then magnificent building, but the park with its wide range of plant species is in splendid condition and therefore a true treat for nature and history lovers, especially with a guide. When walking in the park, you can rest at cafes by the sea or at the Park Café (during summer) and at the Toila SPA restaurant Mio Mare. The former sanatorium has been rebuilt with great sauna facilities and the unique Orhidee wellness centre.

48

SIGHTSEEINGS A convent, ash hills and a wooden handicrafts centre Just 15 km from the Tallinn-Narva Road, on the highest artificial hill in the Baltic region, stands the Kiviõli Adventure Centre, which offers adrenaline-packed adventures for the entire family, starting from racing down the hill in a mountain car, Estonia’s longest rope descent of 800 metres, a buggy safari or an ATV track for children. You can also simply climb the hill and enjoy the view across the surrounding industrial landscape. In the winter, the hill becomes a very popular ski slope. In summer 2018, a new adventure park for the entire family will open here. In Ida-Virumaa, the Tallinn-Narva Road also runs past Purtse Castle, which boasts a restaurant considered to be among the TOP 50 restaurants in Estonia. While waiting for your meal, you can look around the castle and if the hosts have time they will tell you stories of the history and legends of the castle. This is also where you will find Purtse Harbour and Liimala beach, where visitors are greeted by the beach restaurant Tulivee, which always tells many exciting stories of the secret life of coastal folks. The only active Orthodox convent in the Baltic region, the Pühtitsa Convent, is located at Kuremäe and opens its gates to everyone from sunrise to sunset. Visitors can wander around the premises and take a peek into the main church as well as walk to a holy spring and refresh themselves with healing spring water, which is always cool and fresh. Visitors can also watch nuns going about their everyday chores and tending to their gardens and vegetable plots. The highest natural hill in the county, the Tärivere Hill stands by the Jõhvi-Tartu Road. The

hill has a viewing tower which in good weather offers a view across both the golden cupolas of the Pühtitsa Convent and the chimneys of the Narva Power Plant. Avinurme is famous for holding barrel fairs and being Estonia’s carpentry capital. The local lifestyle centre there offers visitors an opportunity to look at various older and newer woodworking tools and includes an exciting animal exhibition and an insect collection for

SIGHTSEEINGS children. At the Avinurme Wooden Handicrafts Centre, visitors can see and buy all sorts of wooden and wood chip products, take part in interesting workshop activities and have something nice to eat at the café. The Jõhvi-Tartu Road also runs right past the

Iisaku Museum, which gives visitors an overview of the cultures of the border area. The museum offers lots of materials and stories about the local half-Estonians and half-Russians and their lifestyle, and the museum guide’s treasure trove of knowledge adds many exciting and juicy details.

Narva Museum again takes visitors on excursions to the Kreenholm Manufacturing Plant At 12 o’clock every Sunday until 28 October, the Narva Museum invites visitors on an excursion to the Kreenholm Manufacturing Plant, where they will be given an overview of the 160-year history of the plant in the midst of monumental industrial architecture. The guided excursions start from the old gate of the former textile giant Kreenholm opposite Joala 32 and visitors can leave their car

or bus in the free-of-charge parking lot by the gate for the duration of the excursion. The excursion lasts for about 1.5 hours, taking visitors around the closed territory of the Kreenholm Plant as well as to the old factory building where they can see the large spinning workshop which gives a better understanding of the huge scale of the work once done there. The length of the entire route is about 2.5 km.

Land of brown gold Former mining areas have been cleverly taken into use and made attractive to tourists. The Kiviõli spoil hill has been rebuilt into a cool sports and adventure centre, and it will soon also open a new adventure park for the entire family, offering exciting activities all year round. Aidu is another exciting place – the former quarry now boasts a crazy picturesque moon landscape with canals filled with crystal clear water and is now a venue for jeep safaris and canoe and boat trips.

The Estonian Mining Museum at KohtlaNõmme offers visitors a chance to transform themselves into miners and have a proper look at what a miner’s everyday work underground was like. The diversity of Ida-Virumaa is further complemented by hiking trails. For the centenary of the Republic of Estonia, the State Forest Management Centre opened two hiking trails that run diagonally through Estonia. One of these crosses through the most exciting places in Ida-Viru County, starting at Kauksi by Lake Peipsi. The landscape on the trail is very diverse – hikers will traverse through bogs and mining areas, up onto coastal cliffs and down again.

From June 30 to July 1 the Narva Museum will revive the Middle Ages at Narva Castle and invites all history-lovers to take part in this event. The two-day Narva Medieval Festival is being organized by the museum for the third year in cooperation with the medieval reenactment club of the Teutonic Order from St Petersburg. In the courtyard of Narva Castle, scenes from the year 1346, when the sales agreement of the castle was signed between the King of Denmark and the German Order, will be re-enacted. The guests can watch and cheer during tournaments between knights, involving sword and archery competitions. Medieval musicians or minstrels and traveling clowns or skomorokhs will perform. There will be thea-

tre and versatile forms of entertainment characteristic of the era will be offered to guests both big and small. Everyone can try their hand as an archer, knight, craftsman, or as simple citizens from that distant time. Ballads will be played, medieval dances can be learned and people can participate in masterclasses. Children can play with soft toy weapons and try throwing darts. The festival culminates in the evening with a fire-breathing dragon. A tent town will be set up at the festival to demonstrate the everyday life of knights on a military campaign. At certain times, excursions will be organized through the area, introducing the furnishings of the tents and the lives of the knights and their families.

Right there, between Estonia and Russia, there lies an island on a dried-up riverbed. Twice a year, the river of oblivion from the Narva Waterfall flows past the island. The old manufacturing plant is the best place to tell the story of the rumbling music industry of the Soviet Union and the controversial fate of one of its brightest stars, Jaak Joala. It is the best

place to listen to the unforgettable songs of Joala and enjoy the rhythms of Radar. But the story is not just about Jaak Joala. It is a general term for a row of Estonian musicians, the so-called Nightingales of the Kremlin, who kept the machinery of the Soviet entertainment industry working and enjoyed the fame.

SPOT HOLIDAY GEMS BY THE SEA Ida-Viru county is not known for a large number of hotels but most of them would beat their competitors with their locations: there is no shortage of scenic views. Narva-Jõesuu spa hotels Meresuu, Noorus and Narva-Jõesuu Sanatorium provide perfect holidays. All three are located in the immediate vicinity of Estonia’s most beautiful and longest sandy beach. On a high sea coast near the beautiful Toila Oru park there is Toila Spa Hotel with its celebrated restaurant Mio Mare. Mäetaguse Manor Hotel with its Scandinavian style rooms, converted from an old coach house, is a popular retreat for tired urban folks

as well as a venue for couples getting married. Saka Manor Hotel is the place to enjoy the steep rocky coast of Ontika and the romantic views to the Gulf of Finland. Hotel guests enjoy their walks on the seaside, relaxing in the small spa complex and indulging in the delicious meals cooked in the restaurant’s own kitchen. Restaurant meals served in the vaulted dining room offer good value for money. Kauksi Holiday House on Lake Peipsi is a private spot in a genuine country atmosphere offering a perfect holiday and delicious food. Food lovers should drop in at the café-res-

taurant of Purtse Fortification, followed by a newly opened restaurant Tulivesi at the nearby Liimala beach. If you feel like having a solid meal of delicious quality shaslik, take a detour to Jõhvi and find the tavern Mimino serving the best of Georgian cuisine. Restaurant Rondeel at the historic Narva Castle offers extraordinary dishes seven days a week. The boarder town possesses a peculiar canteen called Modern, a place popular with famous Russian cultural figures. Modern is famous for its cosy atmosphere and reasonable prices. Although its exterior rather promises a plain basement pub, the place rocks. Once in Puškin street, it’s worth a visit. If you get fed up with good and pretty and

would rather explore Ida-Viru County on your own, pack your rucksack with sandwiches and other necessities and start your trip at the village of Viivikonna. This ex-district of Kohtla-Järve, now administratively a part of Narva-Jõesuu, has nothing but abandoned blocks. Still, there is a canteen and a 24-hour open shop that are both definitely worth a visit. Another reason for visiting Viivikonna is Kerli’s music video „Army of Love“ that was shot there. Less demanding ramblers looking for more varied entertainment can seek the Club RoRo in Narva or an entertainment venue Randevuu, a converted public toilet in Sillamäe. Have a good summer and enjoy your new discoveries!
