Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders
Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, VUE Weekly, the Canada 150 Fund, and the Harper-Kennedy Fund at Edmonton Community Foundation

An emphasis will be placed on specific film series, the screening of short films, film made in Alberta, Canadian classics by the likes of Cronenberg, Maddin, Arcand, Kunuk, and Wheeler, and honouring all of our commitments to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission through film. Look for our Canada 150 logo throughout the entire year to help your own Canadian Cinematic Celebrations.

Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Jenkins’s staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.
The Salesman The Love Witch – 35mm USA 2016, 120 min, Dir: Anna Biller JAN 17 @ 9:15PM, JAN 19 @ 9:15PM, JAN 22 @ 9:15PM, JAN 23 @ 9:30PM
Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However her spells work too well, and she ends up with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder. With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the 1970s, The Love Witch explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism.

Unaware of the fact that the previous tenant had been a woman of ill repute having many clients, they settle down. By a nasty turn of events one of the clients pays a visit to the apartment one night while Ranaa is alone at home taking a bath and the aftermath turns the peaceful life of the couple upside down.

A boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina; the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at home: these scenes and others are woven into Cameraperson, a tapestry of footage captured over the twenty-five-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. A work that combines documentary, autobiography, and ethical inquiry, Cameraperson is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker’s personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world.

A glorious mix of history and imagination, Neruda is a lavishly mounted and grandly entertaining depiction of the manhunt for exiled Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda, who has become a fugitive in his home country in the late 1940s for joining the Communist Party. Blending visual grandeur and literary wit, the film is a beguiling reinvention of the ‘standard’ cinematic biography. Playfully confounding expectations at every turn, the film offers a startling rumination on the split between the person and persona, the man and the artist.

Lee is a loaf by night and janitor by day in Boston, spending his free time fighting in bars and ignoring would-be suitors. The passing of his brother breaks Lee from the cycle, bringing him home to the town he escaped years earlier, where he’s burdened with the unexpected guardianship of his teenage nephew. His arrival also unearths his checkered past as Lee comes back into contact with his estranged wife and deals with life in his tight-knit former community.
Michèle seems indestructible. Head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle’s life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game – a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control.

Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art USA 2016, 72 min, Dir: James Crump JAN 5 @ 7PM
Set in the desolate desert spaces of the American southwest, the film unearths the history of land art during the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s. Troublemakers is ultimately a story of renegades and firebrands all willing to risk their future careers on radical change and experimentation-a marked contrast to the hyper-speculative contemporary art world of today. Featuring rare interviews with a veritable who’s who of American Art of the twentieth century. Screens with local shorts: The Long, Lonely Road Home – Dir: Dylan Rhys Howard & Isachsen, and The Madness of a Lonely Man – Dir: aAron Munson. Featuring a one night exhibition in the lobby by Edmonton artists Stephanie Jonsson & Daniel Evans, and a Q&A following the screening.
The film widely considered the “Citizen Kane of bad movies” is back! Be sure to catch Tommy and his friends the first Friday of the month for a late night screening this classic piece of so-badit’s-good cinema. You’re our favourite customer. Thanks a lot! Bye. DEDfemme DEDfemme aims to celebrate and promote the unique cinematic visions of women in genre film. Women are sorely undervalued in the filmmaking industry, but more so within the realm of genre. The unfortunate truth is that people don’t often equate great horror, action, sci-fi, western, psychological thriller and quirky comedy with the filmmaking efforts of women, but DEDfemme is here to prove that women are indeed out there, kicking ass and producing some of the most remarkable and offbeat stuff genre cinema has to offer. Presented and curated by Lacey Paige.

Romeo is Bleeding Blood Diner Life Itself USA 2014, 120 min, Dir: Steve James JAN 12 @ 6:30PM
Life Itself recounts the surprising and entertaining life of world-renowned film critic and social commentator Roger Ebert - a story that’s by turns personal, wistful, funny, painful, and transcendent. The film explores the impact and legacy of Roger Ebert’s life: from his Pulitzer Prize-winning film criticism and his nearly quarter-century run with Gene Siskel on their review show, to becoming one of the country’s most influential cultural voices, and finally to Roger’s inspiring battles with cancer and the resulting physical disability.
USA 1987, 88 min, Dir: Jackie Kong JAN 13 @ 9:30PM
Two cannibalistic brothers kill various young women to make their flesh part of the new special dish at their rundown restaurant while seeking blood sacrifices to awaken a dormant Egyptian goddess. Jackie Kong (Night Patrol) is a director, producer, and screenwriter whose Blood Diner changed the traditional horror film into a gore fest with outrageous effects and comedy, ultimately pioneering a new sub-genre of horror film. The fact that Blood Diner was directed by a woman blew audiences and critics minds.
UK/USA 1993, 100 min, Dir: Peter Medak JAN 14 @ 7PM
Detective Jack Grimaldi takes us through his shattered life after encountering the most deadly (and deceptive) criminal he has ever had to deal with. It doesn’t help that Grimladi is playing both sides against the middle. When he encounters Demarkov he thinks he can play her as he has all the other women in his life...including his wife. But Demarkov knows Jack better than he knows himself. She plays him mercilessly, all the while threatening to kill him when she tires of the game.

Wuthering Heights UK/USA 1992, 105 min, Dir: Peter Kosminsky JAN 15 @ 1PM
There have been a lot of adaptations of Bronté’s best-known novel. There’s a reason this one stands out. While we’re all for subtle innuendo and decorum, it’s also fun to see that shredded from time to time, to see the howling beasts that lurk within – even within the English. Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche have fantastic screen chemistry.
The English Patient USA/UK 1996, 162 min, Dir: Anthony Minghella FEB 19 @ 1PM
It’s a Ralph Fiennes/Juliet Binoche double bill! Well, sort of. The English Patient is a sprawling, multi-layered and poetic book, tackling big issues of identity, the balance of passion and reason, class and race. It’s great fun to see any film try to squeeze that onto the screen – even if it takes nearly three hours to do it. Here’s a great chance to remind yourself why it won every freaking award in 1997.

The Wolf Man (1941) USA 1941, 70 min, Dir: George Waggner Staff Pics: Maddy JAN 16 @ 7PM
Maddy is one of Metro’s FOH employees and, in her own words, she chose the film because: “The Wolf Man is an incredible picture from 1941, and in my opinion, it’s one of the greatest horror films in existence. Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into when he returns to his home town and ends up killing a wolf (but not so much a wolf as a human/wolf) with his silver cane. Gypsies, antique shops, father/ son dynamic, and the ever-amazing Claude Rains are featured in The Wolf Man. Safe to say, it’s a treat.
Constantly seeking out old horror, I first watched The Wolf Man when I was 15 years old, and it’s a film that I still hold with the highest regard. It has a sense of nostalgia for me both because of the age of the film and my own age when I first got to experience the majesty and wonderfulness of the movie. Not to mention, with Lon Chaney, Claude Rains and Bela Lugosi together in one movie, all that could become of it is excellence.” 14
