Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media.

Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of the Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM, CFRN, CJSR, FAVA, Vue Weekly and the Harper-Kennedy Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation. Metro Cinema recognizes our relationship with Treaty 6 territory and wishes to acknowledge the Papaschase First Nation on whose unceded land the Garneau Theatre occupies.

In I Am Not Your Negro, Raoul Peck envisions the book, Remember This House, that James Baldwin never finished—a radical narration about race in America, through the lives and assassinations of three of his friends: Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Malcolm X. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using only Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. The film is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter.

Paterson is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey - they share the name. Every day, Paterson drives his daily route, writes poetry into a notebook, stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer, and goes home to his wife, Laura. By contrast, her world is ever changing; new dreams come to her almost daily. The film quietly observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

Toni Erdmann The Girl with All the Gifts UK/USA 2016, 111 min, Dir: Colm McCarthy MAR 24 @ 7PM, MAR 25 @ 9:30PM, MAR 27 @ 9:30PM, MAR 28 @ 7PM With much of humanity transformed into ravenous flesh-eating predators by a freak fungal outbreak, a group of survivors are holed up in a fortified stronghold. Within these reinforced walls, Miss Justineau, a kind-hearted teacher, and Dr. Caldwell, a cold-blooded scientist, believe that they may’ve stumbled across the key to humanity’s survival in the petite form of young Melanie. While prone to the same carnivorous impulses as the other “hungries”, Melanie is also hyperintelligent and incredibly gregarious. Could the cure to this outbreak reside in her DNA?

A man awakens adrift in the middle of the ocean. He is able to swim to a nearby remote island which is only inhabited by crabs, birds and a mysterious red turtle. This is the premise behind this collaboration between French production studio The Wild Bunch and Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli. The result is a visually stunning and emotionally complex film, without any need for dialogue.APR 14 & 17 @ 2PM – Free admission for kids 12 & under

Maliglutit (Searchers) Canada 2016, 94 min, Dir: Zacharias Kunuk, Natar Ungalaaq Inuktitut with subtitles APR 14 @ 7PM, APR 15 @ 4:30PM, APR 16 @ 4PM, APR 17 @ 9PM

With a tale as timeless as the landscape in which it is set, the latest feature from Zacharias Kunuk uses the plot of John Ford’s 1956 western The Searchers as inspiration for a very different kind of revenge story, in which an Inuk man and his band of maliglutit (“followers”) set out across the barren Arctic in search of the marauders who have ransacked his home and kidnapped his wife. (Steve Gravestock, TIFF)

Canadian master Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo, The Tracey Fragments) teams with veteran playwright and screenwriter Daniel MacIvor for this offbeat coming-of-age comedydrama. In a small Nova Scotian town in 1976, 15-year-old Kit and his platonic girlfriend Alice decide to shake up their go-nowhere existence by hitchhiking to Sydney to visit Kit’s glamorous but unstable mother – a journey that will force them to face some hard truths about themselves and point the way toward a more honest and fully-lived future.

This feature documentary by Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin is a love letter to two unique personalities and the music that brought them together.

Tommy Wiseau’s The Room

The film widely considered the “Citizen Kane of bad movies” is back! Audience participation is encouraged. Please respect the theatre and fellow patrons.

Call Her Applebroog Double Indemnity USA 1944, 107 min, Dir: Billy Wilder MAR 1 @ 7PM

Beautiful blonde housewife Phyllis plots with insurance salesman Walter to arrange her husband’s murder and cash in on a valuable policy – with a double indemnity clause. Double Indemnity has been called “an undiluted study in greed, cunning and vindictiveness” and is a classic of the film noir genre. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and the alluring, conniving Phyllis firmly established the image of the femme fatale in modern cinema. There will be a short talk before the film about the history of the femme fatale, and the real-life murder that inspired the story.

USA 2016, 70 min, Dir: Beth B MAR 2 @ 7PM

This deeply personal portrait of acclaimed New York–based artist Ida Applebroog was shot with mischievous reverence by her filmmaker daughter, Beth B. Born in the Bronx to Orthodox Jewish émigrés from Poland, Applebroog, now in her 80s, looks back at how she expressed herself through decades of drawings and paintings, as well as her private journals. With her daughter’s encouragement, she investigates the stranger that is her former self, a woman who found psychological and sexual liberation through art. Screens with local short film Enough (2016) by Taouba Khelifa. Includes an exhibition by Edmonton artist Jennie Vegt in the lobby and a Q&A following the screening. metrocinema.org

Seed: The Untold Story USA 2016, 94 min, Dir: Jon Betz, Taggart Siegel English, Spanish, & Hindi with subtitles MAR 5 @ 4:30PM

Bugs Denmark/Netherlands/France/Germany 2016, 73 min, Dir: Andreas Johnsen MAR 2 @ 9:30PM, MAR 8 @ 9:30PM

Insects as food is a hot topic. Since the UN recommended edible insects as a resource to combat world hunger, they have been heralded for their taste by cooks and gastronomes, for their low ecological impact by environmentalists, and for their nutritional content by public health scientists. It would seem that insects are the new superfood that will fix all our problems of global food security.

Seed: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds.

Soylent Green

Japan 1985, 115 min, Dir: Juzo Itami Japanese with subtitles MAR 3 @ 9PM, MAR 4 @ 7PM, MAR 6 @ 7PM

USA 1973, 97 min, Dir: Richard Fleischer MAR 5 @ 9PM

Overpopulation has overstressed the foodproduction capacity of the planet, resulting in desperation at all levels, and is so bad that it is impossible to get anywhere without walking over, under, or around someone. Detective Thorn has been hired to investigate the murder of a top industrialist, the man whose company manufactures the life-sustaining wafers called Soylent Green, the only means of survival for the swarming hordes of poor people.

Goodnight Brooklyn: The Story of Death by Audio

DEDfemme DEDfemme aims to celebrate and promote the unique cinematic visions of women in genre film. Women are sorely undervalued in the filmmaking industry, but more so within the realm of genre. The unfortunate truth is that people don’t often equate great horror, action, sci-fi, western, psychological thriller and quirky comedy with the filmmaking efforts of women, but DEDfemme is here to prove that women are indeed out there, kicking ass and producing some of the most remarkable and offbeat stuff genre cinema has to offer. Presented and curated by Lacey Paige.

Afternoon Tea

Reconciliation in Focus

Do you like your accents plummy and your passions refined? Afternoon Tea presents an array of costume dramas past and present, along with delectables from Whimsical Cakes, a selection of fine teas and stirring conversation. Host David Cheoros will be At Home to all visitors.

Sense & Sensibility USA/UK 1995, 136 min, Dir: Ang Lee MAR 19 @ 1PM

Sense and Sensibility - the movie you can watch a thousand times without ever tiring of it. This Austen classic reminds us that costume dramas can be complex, powerful, and tremendously funny. “Emma Thompson invests the character with a touching vulnerability, while Kate Winslet perfectly catches the confusions within the idealistically romantic, but betrayed, Marianne.” (Irish Times) They are supported by the immortal Allan Rickman, as well as Hugh Grant, Greg Wise, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Laurie…and many spectacular locations in Devon. Austen Breakfast: Enjoy a Regency-inspired breakfast at 11AM, featuring pastries from Whimsical, a variety of fresh fruits, and an assortment of other delicacies. Gluten free options available. Tickets are $35 and include admission to the screening. Space is limited to 50 guests for this special occasion and advance purchase is recommended.

Sci-Fi Cinema Be it Contemporary or Golden-Age, Classic or Cult, Independent or Big-Budget, Feature or Short, Sci-Fi Cinema is a film series presenting the best in futuristic settings, alternative history, space opera, time travel, super humans, and extraterrestrial life.

This bi-monthly series, hosted by the U of A’s department of English and Film Studies, reflects on our ongoing responsibilities to the TRC’s Calls to Action, and to broader responsibilities to community and place. A panel of artists, Indigenous community members, and academics will follow each film to discuss the films relationship to local concerns about reconciliation.

Honouring Relations in Short: A Short-Film Retrospective APR 5 @ 7PM

Belle UK 2014, 100 min, Dir: Amma Asante APR 16 @ 1PM

“Describing her film as a hybrid of ‘the Jane Austen elements we know so well – the marriage market, the lives of girls growing up into society ladies, the romantic longing – combined with a story about the end of slavery’, Asante paints an enthralling portrait of a woman struggling to define her identity, caught between stairs in terms of social custom and protocol. Too elevated to eat with the servants, yet too lowly to dine (in company, at least) with her “family”, Dido must find her own space in a world in which her colour marks her as unique among her peers.” (Guardian)

REEL Learning Catch an interesting flick, and then dig a bit deeper into related current events and research with an industry expert and faculty member. This four-part series—which will feature films about everything from fine art to Fosse—is a partnership between MacEwan University and Metro Cinema.

Reconciliation in Focus presents an evening of short films by Indigenous filmmakers from across Canada, featuring the work of artist and author Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg, and scholar Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. Films will be a combination of experimental genres, animation, and documentaries. A panel following the screening will reflect on the politics of storytelling and the relationship between filmmaking and the labour of revitalizing relationships to family, place, and language.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut USA 1982, 117 min, Dir: Ridley Scott MAR 24 @ 9:30PM, MAR 26 @ 9:30PM

Blade Runner is a future-noir set in a bleak Los Angeles where only the unfortunate still reside, one of whom is Deckard, a detective who specializes in tracking down “Replicants”, near perfect humanoid robots, when they break from their programming. Ridley Scott’s Final Cut is the only version over which he had complete artistic control, and the result is an immersive experience that is at once bleaker and more wonderful in the truest sense. 14

Art & Copy reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time -- people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation. Join assistant professor and program coordinator Robert Andruchow (M.Des., University of Alberta) from MacEwan University for an exploration of the thought and work behind some of the most influential advertising creatives since the 1960s.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) showcases some of the most significant movingimage productions ever made in Canada’s history based on a national poll of industry professionals, presented across the country throughout 2017. Free admission.

Cheech Canada 2006, 104 min Dir: Patrice Sauvé French with subtitles APR 27 @ 7PM

A rarely screened gem of Quebec cinema, Cheech is an intersection in the lives of several depressed people experiencing the worst day of their lives. He discovers his photo-book of escorts has been stolen and suspects Cheech, the mysterious owner of a rival agency and sets out to find him. Darkly comic, beautifully shot and with a great Montreal flavor, this is Quebec film at its quirky best.

The Celluloid Has Been Drinking: Tom Waits on Film “God’s away on business,” howled the voice from the car radio. The trickster behind the voice captivated me even more: the ability to play with life is in all of us, but few wear it as well as Mr. Waits.” Curated by Ryn Climenhaga.
