Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media.
Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of the Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM, CFRN, CJSR, FAVA, Vue Weekly and the Harper-Kennedy Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation. Metro Cinema recognizes our relationship with Treaty 6 territory and wishes to acknowledge the Papaschase First Nation on whose unceded land the Garneau Theatre occupies.

For thousands of years they’ve wandered in and out of people’s lives, becoming an essential part of the communities that make the city so rich. Claiming no owners, the cats of Istanbul live between two worlds, neither wild nor tame — and they bring joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. In Istanbul, cats are the mirrors to the people, allowing them to reflect on their lives in ways nothing else could.

In this bold, genre-defying horror-musical mashup, a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters are drawn ashore in an alternate ‘80s Poland to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their siren songs and otherworldly aura make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers. In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s original Little Mermaid tale, one sister falls for a human, and as the bonds of sisterhood are tested, the lines between love and survival get blurred. 6 metrocinema.org metrocinema.org6

A tapestry of pilgrim narratives, Strangers on the Earth explores the physical, social, and spiritual aspects of pilgrimage along Spain’s Camino de Santiago. The landscape is beautiful but brutal, the dorms are packed and the bunks are hard. Some find solace in solitude; others discover kinship and community en route. The case of Dane Johansen is remarkable: he embarks on the nearly 600-mile journey carrying his cello on his back.
Personal Shopper France/Germany 2016, 105 min, Dir: Olivier Assayas English, French & Swedish with subtitles JUN 8 @ 9:30PM, JUN 11 @ 9:30PM, JUN 13 @ 7PM

Set in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, the film follows Anna, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare, and Adrien, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town and places flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to him, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz.

The Art Star and the Sudanese Twins
Elizabeth
“I will have one mistress here... and no master.” Cate Blanchett provides an astonishing portrait of a woman whose wit and passions alternately endanger her and build an empire. Watch Elizabeth I grow from a nervous girl whose future trembles in the grip of Queen Mary, to a young queen beset by plotters, suitors and the prospect of invasion, emerging as a woman “married to England.”
Canada 2016, 60 min, Dir: Alejandro Yoshizawa Chinese & English with subtitles MAY 28 @ 4:30PM
Art Docs

UK 1998, 124 min, Dir: Shekhar Kapur English & French with subtitles MAY 14 @ 1PM
All Our Father’s Relations
A Quiet Passion UK/Belgium 2016, 125 min, Dir: Terence Davies JUN 11 @ 1PM
Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City) completely inhabits the fiercely independent genius of Emily Dickenson in Terence Davies new biography. Come for the poetry, stay for the moments of freshness, humour and brutal candour. There are moments here that are utterly and gloriously Davies: no other filmmaker would have dreamed them up, let alone have executed them with such exquisite delicacy.
USA 2008.109 min, Dir: Pietra Brettkelly MAY 18 @ 7PM
Vanessa Beecroft is obsessively determined to adopt Sudanese twin orphans. The Art Star and the Sudanese Twins follows Beecroft for sixteen months as she exposes the truth about her life with an often brutal honesty—her creative process, her struggle with depression, her volatile relationship with her husband, and her love for the twins. The documentary raises questions about exploitation, culture clash, and the imposition of the West on Africa. Screens with the short film The Things We Taught Our Daughters: Helen Knott. 2015, 5 min, Dir: Coty Savard. Q&A following the screening.

DEDfemme DEDfemme aims to celebrate and promote the unique cinematic visions of women in genre film. Women are sorely undervalued in the filmmaking industry, but more so within the realm of genre. The unfortunate truth is that people don’t often equate great horror, action, sci-fi, western, psychological thriller and quirky comedy with the filmmaking efforts of women, but DEDfemme is here to prove that women are indeed out there, kicking ass and producing some of the most remarkable and offbeat stuff genre cinema has to offer. Presented and curated by Lacey Paige.
Chained Canada 2012, 94 min. Dir: Jennifer Lynch MAY 19 @ 9:30PM
DEDfemme is excited to present Jennifer Lynch’s genre-defying psychological thriller, Chained. The film stars Vincent D’Onofrio as a nefarious cab driver who picks up women and takes them to his house where misogyny, mayhem, and murder ensue. Disguised as a razor-wire taut game of cat and mouse, Lynch’s masterwork conveys a strong social commentary on the complex psychosocial concept of nature vs. nurture.

tion can be achieved. For Fechner, the goal is that after watching his film it will be impossible to dismiss the vital transformation of our entire energy supply as an idealistic dream. By visualizing the struggle and the social quantum leap that this transformation requires, the film aims to provoke change. Linda has served as the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Strathcona since October 2008, and currently serves as the federal NDP’s Critic for Environment and Climate Change. She has long advocated for evidence-based decision making and citizen rights in environmental decisions, thrice tabling a Canadian Environmental Bill of Rights. Dan Nielsen is a Front of House alumni. After “slanging popcorn” for nearly 7 years, Dan stepped away from behind the counter to sit on the Metro Board, where he now serves as President and has helped provide input into running the theatre with Ace Rothstein like efficiency. (All muffins served at Metro have an equal amount of blueberries in each one.) Without a doubt, Casino is Dan’s favourite film, and he has waited his entire Metro tenure to see it on the big screen. From the coolest of suits, to digging holes in the desert, Casino is one of the ultimate gangster films ever created, showing that sometimes even the bad guys don’t finish first. And it’s all based on a true story.
When Ken Russell’s controversial The Devils was first released in 1971, the film faced harsh reaction due to its disturbingly violent, sexual, and religious content. Only after Russell was forced to make several, now infamous, cuts was the film allowed to screen publically. Metro presents the original UK cut of this film, which is slightly longer than other available versions.
