Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders
Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

Weiner USA 2016, 100 min, Dir: Josh Kriegman, Elyse Steinberg JUL 8 @ 6:45PM, JUL 10 @ 4:30PM & 9:15PM, JUL 12 @ 9:30PM, JUL 13 @ 7PM, JUL 14 @ 9:30PM
Watch the wildest political meltdown in recent history as it unfolds. It’s 2013 and Anthony Weiner— still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier—is back in the spotlight as he mounts an audacious comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it’s not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage. Granted unfettered access to the candidate and his campaign, filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg capture a jawdropping, behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it breaks down. Winner of the 2016 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary.
The Lobster Greece/Ireland/ Netherlands/ UK/ France 2015, 118 min, Dir: Yorgos Lanthimos French and English with subtitles JUL 10 @ 2PM & 7PM, JUL 11 @ 9PM, JUL 13 @ 9:15PM
This new film from Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is another journey into one of his singular universes governed by absurd laws that provoke bizarre behaviour by its inhabitants. David has just been left by his wife, which means that like everyone in society without a partner, he must report to a secluded hotel and search for a new mate among the other residents. If the hotel guests fail to find a partner within 45 days, they are promptly transformed into animals—as he likes the sea, David registers to become a lobster in case he is unsuccessful—and sent out into the wild.
Tale of Tales (Il racconto dei racconti) Italy/France/UK 2015, 133 min, Dir: Matteo Garrone JUL 14 @ 7PM, JUL 18 @ 9:30PM, JUL 19 @ 9:30PM, JUL 20 @ 9PM
The film, Garrone’s English-language debut, interweaves three stories bookended by brief bits in which Italians Alba Rohrwacher and Massimo Ceccherini will play a street circus family. In one tale Salma Hayek plays a jealous queen who forfeits her husband’s life. In another, Vincent Cassel plays a king whose passion is stoked by two mysterious sisters. 6

Elstree 1976 UK 2015, 90 min, Dir: Jon Spira JUL 29 @ 7PM, JUL 30 @ 9:30PM, JUL 31 @ 2PM, AUG 1 @ 7PM, AUG 3 @ 9:30PM
Elstree 1976 explores the lives of the actors and extras behind one of the most celebrated franchises in cinematic history, which spans from George Lucas’ original A New Hope to J.J. Abrams’ recent record-breaking blockbuster The Force Awakens. From the man behind film’s most iconic villain, to the actor whose character was completely cut from the final film, the documentary delves into the eccentric community these individuals have formed and how the Star Wars franchise continues to impact their lives decades later.
Life, Animated USA/France 2016, 89 min, Dir: Roger Ross Williams AUG 5 @ 7PM, AUG 6 @ 12:15PM & 9PM, AUG 7 @ 2PM & 9:15PM, AUG 8 @ 7PM, AUG 9 @ 9PM, AUG 10 @ 7PM
Based on Ron Suskind’s best-selling book, Life Animated: a story of Sidekicks, Heroes and Autism, this is the real-life story of Owen
Suskind, the son of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind. An autistic boy who couldn’t speak for years, Owen memorized dozens of Disney movies, turned them into a language to express love and loss, kinship, brotherhood. The family was forced to become animated characters, communicating with him in Disney dialogue and song. Until they all emerged, together, revealing how, in darkness, we all literally need stories to survive.

The Devil’s Horn Canada 2016, 86 min, Dir: Larry Weinstein JUL 12 @ 7PM
From Adolphe Sax’s workshop of the 1840’s to the legendary era of jazz and bebop, it was forbidden by Nazis and Communists and banned by the Pope - gradually conquering all music genres. Throughout its 170 - year history the saxophone has been both the most seductive and most feared instrument. Award winning Canadian filmmaker Larry Weinstein illuminates and mythologizes the story of the saxophone, featuring it’s most legendary players as well as astonishing discoveries. The Devil’s Horn explores the sax’s longstanding curse that stemmed from the difficult life of its mad inventor, and is still said to affect saxophonists who fall prey to the instrument’s dark powers. With live music performance by Wild Rose Orchestra. Followed by Skype Q & A with director Larry Weinstein.

Eat That Question – Frank Zappa In His Own Words is an intimate encounter with the iconoclastic composer and musician. Rare archival footage reveals a provocative 20th century musical genius whose worldview reverberates into the present day and beyond. With live music performance by: NATL Aug 2 - Music at 6:30PM. Film at 7PM.

“Touring makes you crazy,” Frank Zappa says, explaining that the idea for this film came to him while the Mothers of Invention were touring. The story, interspersed with performances by the Mothers and the Royal Symphony Orchestra, is a tale of life on the road. The band members’ main concerns are the search for groupies and the desire to get paid. metrocinema.org

Searching for Sugar Man Sweden/UK 2011, 86 min, Dir: Malik Benjelloul Aug 30 @ 7PM
The Oscar-winning film that chronicles the extraordinary story of the artist known as Rodriguez. In the late 1960s, two celebrated producers, who were struck by soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, discovered a musician in a Detroit bar. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumours of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon. Two fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Screening celebrates Rodriguez’s September 1 concert at The Jubilee Auditorium.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice USA 2016, 151 min, Dir: Zack Snyder JUL 21 @ 9:30PM
Is it bad? Is it good? We at Turkey Shoot don’t know, but here’s the perfect opportunity to see this (possibly) monumental pile of crap and express your full-throated rage or support. You like Sad Ben Batfleck? Cheer Ben and boo the rest. Disdain Jesse Eisenberg’s twitchy Lex Luthor? Every time he’s onscreen, shout for Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey to return. 18+ licensed, no minors.
Batman & Robin USA/UK 1997, 125 min, Dir: Joel Schumacher AUG 25 @ 9:30PM
What exactly do George Clooney’s rubber BatNipples do? Shoot fire at Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger)? We wish. This is worst and greatest of Batman films, from that long-ago time when Chris O’Donnell was a big deal. This sorry sequel buried the franchise in flashy visuals, bad dialogue, and an unusually large number of close-ups of the Dynamic Duo’s butts and Bat-Crotches. 18+ licensed, no minors.

The Decline of Western Civilization – 35th Anniversary 35 Years ago, Penelope Spheeris directed and produced her first film – The Decline of Western Civilization. This film depicting the Los Angeles punk rock scene was as influential as it was controversial – soon after its release, the LAPD Chief of Police Daryl Gates wrote a letter demanding the film not be shown again in L.A. Over the years this film and its follow-up – The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years have attained Cult Status but were rarely theatrically screened & basically unavailable on video. Until now.
The Decline of Western Civilization - Pt. II: The Metal Years USA 1988, 93 min, Dir: Penelope Spheeris JUL 9 @ 9:30PM
The Decline of Western Civilization USA 1981, 100 min, Dir: Penelope Spheeris JUL 8 @ 9PM
Featuring concert footage of Los Angeles punk bands (including Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear, Germs and X) and interviews both with band members, the publishers of Slash fanzine, and with the punks who made up their audience, the film offers a look into a subculture, circa 1980, that was largely ignored by the rock music press of the time.
The documentary follows the heavy metal scene in Los Angeles in the mid and late 1980s, with particular emphasis on the glam metal subgenre. Spheeris explores the more famous musicians, including Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Mustaine and Paul Stanley. She then explores unknown bands, such as London, Odin and Seduce. The film also features interviews with members of Poison, Vixen, Faster Pussycat, W.A.S.P. and more. Serious issues such as drug usage, alcohol abuse, and censorship are tackled, as well as vanity issues like celebrity and sales.

Fight Club Gummo Staff Pics: Owen USA 1997, 89 min, Dir: Harmony Korine JUL 11 @ 7PM
Owen first encountered Harmony Korine while studying film at University in London and was immediately enamoured by the language that Korine uses to explore his narratives. In particular, Korine’s films seem to vividly reflect the way in which he absorbs and interprets the world around him. Gummo is the epitome of these characteristics. There is something very instinctive about the experience of watching it – more than just observing a series of 14
metrocinema.org
piercing vignettes that vaguely tell the story and psychology of a place. While probably remembered most for its shocking imagery and coarse narrative style, perhaps the most abiding element of Gummo is Korine’s sense of immediacy and that something new can be drawn from it with every watch. Truly unpredictable, unforgiving, and unforgettable cinema. Owen is a projectionist at the Metro Garneau theatre and co-host of The British North American Act Of 1867, as well as a regular Friday morning show - both on CJSR. He is also a photographer and has written for Vertigo Magazine film journal in the UK.
Staff Pics: Jessica USA 1999, 139 min, Dir: David Fincher AUG 22 @ 6:45PM
The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. In this cult classic directed by David Fincher, based off Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel of the same name, an insomniac office worker who is looking for a way to change his life, crosses paths with a devil-may-care soap maker, forming an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more. Jessica is one of Metro’s Front of House staff and a recent graduate from the U of A who likes boxing, tofu, and cats.

Spotlight: Brian De Palma Of all the key directors to come of age during the renaissance of New Hollywood in the 70’s, Brian De Palma stands as one of the most talented yet misunderstood filmmakers of his era. The new documentary De Palma explores the work of a singular director with a singular vision. Metro Cinema also presents two examples of his work – his biggest blockbuster and his best cult – Scarface and Phantom of the Paradise.
Fantastic Planet France/Czechoslovakia 1973, 72 min, Dir: René Laloux French with subtitles. JUL 17 @ 9:30PM, JUL 20 @ 7PM, JUL 24 @ 2PM
Nothing else has ever looked or felt like director René Laloux’s animated marvel Fantastic Planet, a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). After Terr, kept as a pet since infancy, escapes from his gigantic child captor, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie, coolly surreal cut-out animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence. Presented on the big screen in a sparkling new HD restored version. (Janus Films)
De Palma USA 2015, 107 min, Dir: Noah Baumbach, Jake Paltrow JUL 23 @ 7PM, JUL 25 @ 7PM, JUL 27 @ 9:15PM
Acolytes of Brian De Palma’s flavorful, flamboyant filmography hardly need reminding of his ability as a visual storyteller; what they’ll learn from De Palma is that in front of the
camera, he’s a pretty marvellous conversationalist, too. De Palma provides an exhaustive but exuberant film-by-film account of a career spanning nearly half a century in Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s delicious documentary portrait — skimping neither on candid self-effacement or irreverent wit as he recalls such professional triumphs as Carrie, such dispiriting misfires as Mission to Mars, and the wealth of knowledge gained and opportunities lost in between. [Guy Lodge, Variety]
Scarface USA 1983, 170 min, Dir: Brian De Palma JUL 23 @ 9:15
