Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media.
Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of the Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM, CFRN, CJSR, FAVA, Vue Weekly and the Harper-Kennedy Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation. Metro Cinema recognizes our relationship with Treaty 6 territory and wishes to acknowledge the Papaschase First Nation on whose unceded land the Garneau Theatre occupies.

A stirring look at three women (Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern) striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

The Lost City of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment, who regard indigenous populations as savages, the determined Fawcett continues to return to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. 6 metrocinema.org metrocinema.org6

Dawson City: Frozen Time pieces together the bizarre true history of a collection of some 500 films dating from 1910s - 1920s, which were lost for over 50 years until being discovered buried in a sub-arctic swimming pool deep in the Yukon Territory, in Dawson City. The film depicts a unique history of a Canadian gold rush town by chronicling the life cycle of a singular film collection through its exile, burial, rediscovery, and salvation - and through that collection, how a First Nation hunting camp was transformed and displaced.

Dash and his best friend Assaf are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper, edited by their friend Verti. But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship, Dash learns of the administration’s cover-up that puts all the students in danger.

Sci-Fi Cinema Be it Contemporary or Golden-Age, Classic or Cult, Independent or Big-Budget, Feature or Short, Sci-Fi Cinema is a film series presenting the best in futuristic settings, alternative history, space opera, time travel, super humans, and extraterrestrial life.
DEDfemme aims to celebrate and promote the unique cinematic visions of women in genre film. Women are sorely undervalued in the filmmaking industry, but more so within the realm of genre. The unfortunate truth is that people don’t often equate great horror, action, sci-fi, western, psychological thriller and quirky comedy with the filmmaking efforts of women, but DEDfemme is here to prove that women are indeed out there, kicking ass and producing some of the most remarkable and offbeat stuff genre cinema has to offer. Curated by Lacey Paige.

Staff Pics Have you ever wondered what your favourite cinema’s fine staff watches when they’re not at work? From the front of house to behind the scenes, each month one Metro staff member will present their must see film!
Lenny USA 1974, 111 min, Dir: Bob Fosse Staff: Kelly McLean AUG 28 @ 7PM
Back to the Future USA 1985, 116 min, Dir: Robert Zemeckis AUG 6 @ 7PM
“If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour... you’re gonna see some serious shit.” Marty McFly and Doc Brown have become enduring cultural icons, and Back to the Future remains one of the most popular movies of all time. Now come back and hoot, cheer, air guitar, and quote along with us as we take you back…
HOMO-cidal drag show The House of HOMO-CIDAL is a cult film-inspired drag troupe hell bent on serving cinema, female impersonation and debauchery in one nasty bundle. This horde of devious mavens will provide entertainment before, during, and after your movie-viewing experience, twisting your minds for the better and hopefully the worst!
Lenny Bruce kicked ass. Dustin Hoffman still kicks ass, and shows off some killer acting chops in this stylized biopic of the 60s comedy icon. Various scenes of Lenny’s life are interspersed with interviews of those close to the legend, showing the rise and fall of the comedian who set the groundwork for modern comedy. With killer direction by Bob Fosse (All That Jazz) and some sweet editing, this is a fascinating biopic, much like Lenny himself. Kelly has been hanging around Metro since December 2016. When Metro realized that they couldn’t get rid of him, they gave him a job! Kelly loves 70s American films, and he also loves all of Dustin Hoffman’s work. Bam! You got a match made in heaven. (Also, Kelly thinks he looks like Mr. Hoffman, humour him please.)
Strange Canada Ever wonder what makes a film feel Canadian? Is there something in the water or does the winter make us odd? Join Strange Canada as we explore the weirder side of Canadian film. The series will delve into the psyche of our national cinema and pull some diamonds from the coal. Documenting 5 decades and diverse directors from across this nation, Strange Canada will expose you to some of the best and strangest homegrown entertainment around. Curated by Maggie Hardy and Allan Mullholland. For more information go to strangecanada.com.

Exotica Canada 1994, 103 min, Dir: Atom Egoyan AUG 31 @ 7PM
The only rule at Exotica is no touching. At a strip club in Toronto men watch as Christina (Mia Kirshner) dances in her school uniform while the emcee (Elias Koteas) describes dark fantasies. Every other night Francis (Bruce Greenwood)
buys a dance from her. Meanwhile a pet store owner and exotic bird smuggler (Don McKellar) who cruises for partners at the ballet gets a visit from Revenue Canada. A haunting story about the nature of love and healing Exotica stands as one of Atom Egoyan’s most impressive films. Nominated for 25 awards including the Palme d’Or and winning 15 of those including: Best Alternative Adult Film AVN Award, FIPRESCI Prize Cannes, and 8 Genies.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS & EVENTS Sculpting in Time: The Films of Andrei Tarkovsky Andrei Tarkovsky is often lauded alongside such prominent names as Kubrick, Kurosawa, and Bergman. Critic Roger Ebert describes his films, in his review of Solaris (1972), as “more like environments than entertainments.” This is true in both the sense of their visceral and engrossing evocations, but also in the sense that Tarkovsky uses the materiality of nature as a representation of our inescapable spatiotemporal relation to the world. Perhaps Tarkovsky’s most poignant use of it comes in the flooded dream sequence of his 1979 masterpiece Stalker. Which, like all of his films, has an ineffable grace that lingers with the viewer for weeks afterwards. Curated by William Latham.

Stalker Soviet Union 1979, 161 min, Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky Russian with subtitles JUL 22 @ 6:30PM, JUL 23 @ 3:30PM, JUL 26 @ 9PM
One of the most immersive and rarefied experiences in the history of cinema, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker embarks on a metaphysical journey through an enigmatic post-apocalyptic landscape. A hired guide—the “Stalker”—leads a writer and a scientist into the heart of the 16

Zone, the restricted site of a long-ago disaster, where the three men eventually zero in on the Room, a place rumored to fulfill one’s most deeply held desires. Tarkovsky creates a challenging and visually stunning work, his painstaking attention to material detail and sense of organic atmosphere further enriched by this vivid new digital restoration. At once a religious allegory, a reflection of contemporary political anxieties, and a meditation on film itself— among many other interpretations—Stalker envelops the viewer by opening up a multitude of possible meanings.
The Russian poet Andrei Gorchakov, accompanied by guide and translator Eugenia, is traveling through Italy researching the life of an 18th-century Russian composer. In an ancient spa town, he meets the lunatic Domenico, who years earlier had imprisoned his own family in his house for seven years to save them from the evils of the world. Seeing some deep truth in Domenico’s act, Andrei becomes drawn to him. In a series of dreams, the poet’s nostalgia for his homeland and his longing for his wife, his ambivalent feelings for Eugenia and Italy, and his sense of kinship with Domenico become intertwined. Nostalgia is Tarkovsky’s brooding late masterpiece, a darkly poetic vision of exile. It was the first of his features to be made outside of Russia, the home to which he would never return.

Jonathan Demme Tribute The films of director, producer, and screenwriter Jonathan Demme (1944-2017) deserve recognition not only for their consistent quality, but also for their diversity. He rose to prominence with his critically acclaimed concert film Stop Making Sense, in collaboration with the Talking Heads. He became best known for directing The Silence of the Lambs, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director. Demme’s first feature, Caged Heat, was produced by Roger Corman, who not only kick-started Demme’s career but also many others including Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Robert De Niro.
Caged Heat USA 1974, 83 min, Dir: Jonathan Demme JUL 20 @ 9:30PM
The Silence of the Lambs USA 1991, 118 min, Dir: Jonathan Demme JUL 18 @ 7PM
Young FBI agent Clarice Starling is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer who skins his victims. Clarice attempts to gain a better insight into the twisted mind of the killer
by talking to another psychopath: Hannibal Lecter, who used to be a respected psychiatrist. FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that Lecter, who is also a very powerful and clever mind manipulator, has the answers to their questions and can help locate the killer. However, Clarice must first gain Lecter’s confidence before the inmate will give away any information.
Considered the quintessential “girls in prison” flick of the 1970s, Caged Heat is set in a hellish American woman’s penitentiary run by vicious, wheelchair-bound Barbara Steele. Statuesque convict Erica Gavin is forced to undergo horrible (but legal) torture when she is falsely accused of trying to escape. Gavin and fellow con Juanita Brown decide to make a real break, but return to prison to rescue a friend who is about to be lobotomized by the sadistic prison doctor. Then they stage a robbery, only to find a group of male robbers at the bank ahead of them. A final shootout in the prison yards brings the film to a bloody climax.
Stop Making Sense USA 1984, 88 min, Dir: Jonathan Demme JUL 22 @ 9:30PM
Stop Making Sense was the first feature-length documentary effort of filmmaker Jonathan Demme, about new wave/pop-rock band The Talking
Heads. The film was made during a three-day concert gig at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. Though some of the material overlaps with the earlier concert film The Name of This Band is Talking Heads, one never gets the feeling of by-the-numbers repetition; the group’s energy is such that it virtually explodes from the screen.
