VIGGO MORTENSEN
Viggo Mortensen selected filmography:
There’s something about those eyes: sunken but sharp, a piercing blue hue shooting outward from within a spread of sharp, statuesque features. That gaze is how Viggo Mortensen sees the world, but really, it’s our window into his as an actor capable of conveying immense amounts of information in a stare: a hidden past (As History of Violence’s Tom Stall, whose everyman winces and aww-shucks heroism belie a darker past), troubled intelligence (a charged-up Freud in A Dangerous Method), or even the capability of carrying a massive, nine-hour/three movie fantasyensemble epic (Lord of the Rings, though you probably already knew that). From the screen, he looks at you like an domesticated animal that still remembers the wilderness. It’s potent, complicated, and is, effectively his actorly calling card. Born in New York but having spent much of childhood in Argentina, Mortensen’s managed a film career that began with Peter Weir’s Witness (though he’d shot scenes for The Purple Rose of Cairo, they ended up on the cutting-room floor), with a curious attraction to characters of more ambiguous nature: there’s enough darkness to him to play compelling villain or damaged hero with equal skill. All of which brings us to The Two Faces
of January, Mortensen’s latest that’s screening at Metro, which looks to make good use of that skill-set: set in 1962, Mortensen is Chester MacFarland, the husband half of an American couple touring Athens. Along with his wife Colette (Kirsten Dunst), they hire a tour guide who finds himself drawn to the couple’s suspicious luxuries. They soon find themselves enter into a complex bind of jealous feelings, criminal activity and twisting, shifting sentiments. The Two Faces of January runs in November; beyond Mortensen, the next few months of Metro programming include a trio of festivals in October, which divide their curation from contemporary Japanese cinema (October 4 – 5), to the alpine delights of ski films (Oct 16 – 18) and the annual horror-gorge of Dedfest (Oct 21 – 26). There’s also a food on film fest to relish (Nov 13 – 16) and a small tribute to Lauren Bacall (To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep). Plus, of course, the annual showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and a Robert Altman retrospective which includes M*A*S*H, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and The Player. All in all, a wide, diverse spectrum of filmmakers old and new. -David Reis
Vanishing Point (1997): consider it a curio in the Mortensen oeuvre: a remake of the legendary driving movie, this direct-to-TV remake cast Mortensen in the role of Jimmy Kowalski, war veteran, auto-mechanic and racer who starts going one day and doesn’t stop. While the plot’s nearly identical to the original, it was a broader, more-PG interpretation—a curiosity in a filmography full of them. Eastern Promises (2007): The second of three collaborations between Mortensen and David Cronenberg (the other two being A History of Violence, which came before and A Dangerous Method, which came after) that proved that the pair’s ability to coax interesting work out of one another wasn’t lightning in a bottle. Mortensen’s cast as driver whose job is to drop off murdered bodies in the River Thames. It seems a secondary role, but proves otherwise in a film recognized for its effective plot twists. The Road (2009): A bleak one, to say the least: Mortensen’s nameless protagonist and his young ward attempt to navigate a post-apocalyptic world based on the book by Cormac McCarthy. A portrait of a world drawn with dark and darker colours, but compelling in performance and adherence to its own grim scenario.

The Dance of Reality (La danza de la realidad) Chile/ France 2013, 130 min, Digital, Dir: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Spanish w/ subtitles 3 @ 6:45PM, 4, 9 @ 9:15PM, 7 @ 9:30PM, (New Release)
After a 23-year hiatus, The Dance of Reality marks the triumphant return of visionary Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo and The Holy Mountain). Jodorowsky was born in 1929 in Tocopilla, a coastal town on the edge of the Chilean desert, where the film was shot. In this radiantly visceral autobiographical film, a young Jodorowsky is confronted by a collection of compelling characters that contributed to his burgeoning surreal consciousness. Blending his personal history with metaphor, mythology, and poetry, Dance of Reality reflects the legendary filmmakers’ philosophy that reality is not objective but rather a “dance” created by our own imaginations.

Friday Night Late Shows///
staff pics/// Have you ever wondered what your favourite cinema’s fine staff watch when they’re not at work? Staff Pics is the series that lets you get better acquainted with Metro’s team by revealing their unique film tastes. From the front of house to behind the scenes, each month one Metro staff member will present their must see film!
Starting in the 70s, late-night screenings of non-mainstream and cult films were a staple of independent movie houses. Boost your nocturnal cinema consumption and celebrate the return of regular Friday Night Late Shows! (encores for most films Sun @ 9:30pm). Please note: Late shows are 18+ & licensed.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch USA 2001, 95 min, Digital, Dir: John Cameron Mitchell 3 @ 11:30PM, 5 @ 9:30PM
Creator-star Mitchell adapted and directed his Off Broadway stage rock musical and opened up his gender-bending ‘70s kitsch fantasy. Hedwig was once Hansel, an East Berlin boy, whose sex-change operation was botched and who was abandoned in a Kansas trailer park by her G.I. husband. Betrayed in love by Tommy (Michael Pitt), who also steals Hedwig’s songs, Hedwig and her band embark on a low-rent tour while singing her life story to the disinterested and stalking a much-more successful Tommy. This cult hit has now become a true queer classic.
Phantom of the Paradise USA 1974, 92 min, Digital, Dir: Brian De Palma 10 @ 11:30PM, 12 @ 9:30PM
Composer Winslow Leach is duped into selling his masterpiece cantata to the evil record producer Swan (Paul Williams), a Faustian mistake which leaves Leach horribly maimed by a record press and his voice-box replaced by a computer. Reborn as the Phantom, Leach plots a campaign of revenge against Swan, haunting the diminutive mogul’s music palace, the Paradise, and mooning over Swan’s latest acquisition, aspiring singer Phoenix. Over the years, De Palma’s baroque amalgam of glam rock, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Picture of Dorian Grey has, like the Phantom himself, risen from the shadows of obscurity into cult cinema stardom.
The Host (Gwoemul) South Korea 2006, 119 min, Digital, Dir: Joon-ho Bong, Korean w/ subtitles 17 @ 11:30PM, 19 @ 9:30PM
A horror thriller, a political satire, a dysfunctional family comedy, and a touching melodrama, [this] is also one helluva monster movie. Joon-ho Bong’s iteration of the genre opens at a U.S. Army base in Seoul with an American mortician ordering a Korean subordinate to dump “dirty formaldehyde” into the sink ... which empties into the Han River. When the resulting monster nabs one of the Park family from the shore, the misfit clan unites to seek revenge. The Host twists suddenly from horror to pathos to comedy to action and back again, as the Parks battle a giant mutant river monster, hazmat teams, the police, mad scientists, government conspirators, and an American chemical weapon… (Roger Ebert) Also by Joon-ho Bong, Snowpeircer starting Oct 15.

The Fisher King
USA 1991, 137 min, Digital, Dir: Terry Gilliam 5 @ 7PM
The late Robin Williams stars in Gilliam’s comic masterpiece as Parry, a homeless history professor who lives in a fantasy world. Jack (Jeff Bridges) is a shock deejay, whose off-hand arrogance triggers a tragedy which ruins his career. Jack then finds himself plucked from disaster by the most improbable of saviours... Parry. And so the amazing story of The Fisher King unfolds a modern quest for redemption and the Holy Grail, filled with humour, heartbreak and ravishing romance. Tickets are free but need to be reserved at EventBrite or through the CMHA site.
The Purple Rose of Cairo USA 1985, 82 min, Digital, Dir: Woody Allen 6 @ 7PM
Metro’s Projectionist/House Manager Joe Hartfeil has spent enough time in a darkened movie theatre that he often forgets the difference between what’s on screen and boring old reality. Well, not quite, but he certainly has an affinity for Woody Allen’s beautifully romantic fantasy, which gives new meaning to the cliché “love letter to the movies.” In the drabness of Depression-era New Jersey, Cecilia (Mia Farrow) can only escape her uninspiring existence a couple hours at a time through the magic of the movies, particularly her favourite, The Purple Rose of Cairo. When matinee idol Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels) walks off the silver screen and into Cecilia’s life, it leads to a series of misunderstandings equally heartbreaking and hilarious. This inventive, assured work is that of a filmmaker working at the peak of his powers.
Music Docs/// A monthly film series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR and Blackbyrd Myoozik.
1991: The Year Punk Broke USA 1992, 99 min, Digital, Dir: Dave Markey 7 @ 7PM
In 1991, pioneering noise rockers Sonic Youth were about as big as a punk rock band was supposed to get; they’d become one of the most acclaimed bands in the American rock underground… As it happened, punk rock was about to invade radio and MTV in a big way, but they weren’t the ones to lead the charge. In the summer of 1991, Sonic Youth spent two weeks playing large clubs and music festivals, with an up-and- coming band called Nirvana on hand as their opening act. Both bands found themselves playing to some of the biggest and most enthusiastic audiences they’d experienced thus far… The film also includes appearances by Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland, Gumball and The Ramones. (Mark Deming, Rovi) With special live music performance by Banshee. Music at 6:30PM. Film at 7PM.

Lauren Bacall Tribute/// With her sultry looks and powerful screenpresence - oozing confidence and nononsense sex appeal - it’s little wonder that Lauren Bacall quickly became a screen goddess, or that she was the only female member of the Rat Pack. Whether noir or technicolor, Bacall was a cinematic force to be reckoned with. Metro invites you to celebrate her legacy with two of her most iconic roles, both directed by Howard Hawks.
To Have and Have Not USA 1944, 100 min, Digital, Dir: Howard Hawks 10 @ 6:30PM, 12 @ 4:15PM, 13 @ 9:30PM
Help the Free French? Not world-weary gunrunner Harry (Bogart). But he changes his mind when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, “Anybody got a match?” That red-hot match is Bogart and first-time actress Bacall. Full of intrigue and racy banter (including the legendary whistling scene), this thriller excites further interest for what it has and has not. Cannily directed by Hawks ... it doesn’t have much similarity to the Ernest Hemingway novel that inspired it. It does strongly resemble Casablanca: French resistance fighters, a piano-playing blues man and a Martinique bar... But first and foremost, it showcases the couple, carrying on with a passion that smolders from the tips of their cigarettes clear through to their souls. (Turner Classics)
Boyhood USA 2014, 165 min, Digital, Dir: Richard Linklater 10 @ 8:30PM, 11 @ 3:45PM, 11 @ 9:30PM, 13 @ 1PM, 12, 13, 15 @ 6:30PM
Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister, Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence, from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations, and all the moments in between, become transcendent. Set to a soundtrack spanning the years, the film is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.
Peter Pan USA 1953, 77 min, Digital, Dirs: Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson 11 @ 2PM (G)
The timeless Disney classic about a boy who never wants to grow up. Based on the book and play by J.M. Barrie. The three children of the Darling family receive a visit from Peter Pan, who with faith and Tinker Bell’s pixie dust, teaches them how to fly and leads them to the “second star to the right” and beyond …to Never Land. There they face an ongoing conflict between Peter’s gang of rag-tag runaways and the evil Pirate Captain Hook. A wonderful tale with fantastic animation and music.
School of Rock USA 2003, 108 min, Digital, Dir: Richard Linklater 18 @ 2PM (PG)
The Big Sleep USA 1946, 114 min, Digital, Dir: Howard Hawks 11 @ 7PM, 13 @ 4:15PM, 14 @ 9:30PM
The noir universe of crime, corruption, cynicism, and existential chaos gets the big-budget A-list treatment. ...The Big Sleep is glam noir with a big-time pedigree: a William Faulkner script, based on a Raymond Chandler novel, directed by Howard Hawks, with Bogart and Bacall in the leads — and, of course, the legendary convoluted plot that even director, novelist, and screenwriter professed themselves unable to follow. Bogart is tough-talking private eye Philip Marlowe; Bacall is seductive socialite Vivian Sternwood, older sister of a mixed-up young woman Marlowe is hired to protect. The sexual attraction between Marlowe and Vivian sizzles, while the cynical, slangy, hardboiled dialogue truly amazes. (Jim Sinclair, Pacific Cinematheque).
Jack Black is Dewey Finn, a life-long rocker and true believer who gets tossed by his band and forced to get a job. Dewey snakes a teaching gig from his roomie, ending up at an exclusive elementary school where he finds a classroom full of precocious kids with musical talent <who> he molds into a rock band with the intention of entering the Battle of the Bands...Black’s wild-eyed, fully-committed performance easily carries the day, and he’s ably supported by the kids, all of whom can actually play and sing, and by a savvy script that takes the music seriously. (Videohound)
Ghostbusters USA 1984, 115 min, Digital, Dir: Ivan Reitman 27 @ 7PM (PG)
“There’s something strange in the neighbourhood...” One of the most enjoyable and wonderfully cast comedies of the 80s is celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary! Featuring an iconic cast Ghostbusters is a “deliriously inventive... near flawless example of the 80s genre boom in full swing, fusing state-ofthe-art SF X, a loopy guys-on- a-mission plot, some awful synth ‘n’ snare electro-pop and a handful of the finest one-liners ever.” (Time Out) Special Mon Night Show!

Shake Hands with the Devil Grease 2 USA 1982, 115 min, Digital, Dir: Patricia Birch 14 @ 7PM
Turkey Shoot understands that greatness must begin somewhere. Michelle Pfeiffer, for example, is an Academy Award winning actress, a paragon of the tenacity required for mature actresses to remain professionally relevant in a film industry that exploits young female erotic capital. With that in mind, she is soooo hot in this movie! Interestingly, time has proven Pfeiffer far more professionally relevant than her smoking hot English male costar Maxwell Caulfield. More importantly, Grease 2 contains CURIOUS CANADIAN CONTENT: The screenplay is credited to one of Dave and Jeff’s satirical heroes, Ken Finkleman, creator of The (way funnier than Sorkin’s) Newsroom. They repeat: Greatness must begin somewhere.
Snowpiercer South Korea, 126 min, Digital, Dir: Joon-ho Bong 15 @ 9:30PM, 18 @ 4PM, 19 @ 7PM

Featuring a stellar cast and spectacular visual effects, don’t miss this final chance to catch Snowpiercer at Metro.

A group of teenagers are terrorized by “Freddy Krueger”, an evil being from another world who gets to his victims by entering their dreams and killing them with gloves that have knife blades attached to each finger. Make sure to catch Johnny Depp in an impressive movie debut.
Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but all unambitious electronics salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) cares about is his girlfriend Liz, who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate, Shaun fights his way across town to rescue her, but the petty concerns of life keep getting in the way... Many zombie movies are comedies by accident, but Shaun of the Dead is deliberately and brilliantly funny, while still delivering a few delicious jolts of fear. Reel Rock Film Tour/// In its ninth year, the Reel Rock Film Tour features a special presentation of the highly- anticipated film Valley Uprising.
Night of the Living Dead
Valley Uprising USA 2014, 96 min, Digital, Dir: Peter Mortimer 28 @ 7PM
The greatest untold story of American counterculture is alive in that of the Yosemite Valley rock climbers. For the past fifty years, Yosemite’s massive cliffs have drawn explorers and madmen to leave materialism behind and venture onto the high, lonesome granite. The larger-than-life characters of Yosemite carved out an “extreme bohemian” lifestyle in the Valley, clashing with National Park authorities, and pioneering the boldest climbs on Earth. Valley Uprising is the riveting tale of this bold tradition: half a century of struggle against the laws of gravity - and the laws of the land. TICKETS: $15 AT TRACK & TRAIL IN ADVANCE & METRO’S BOX OFFICE AT THE SCREENING. no metro passes.
House on Haunted Hill USA 1959, 75 min, Digital, Dir: William Castle 31 @ 7PM
A reclusive millionaire (Vincent Price) invites 5 people to spend the night in a spooky mansion, promising a $1000 reward to each, but only if they can make it to morning. As the night goes on, however, smug irreverence turns to fear, as murder and mayhem of the spookiest sort transform the party into a nightmare. Don’t miss this authentic presentation of a classic chiller, complete with Castle’s original Emergo gimmick!
USA 1968, 96 min, Digital, Dir: George A. Romero 31 @ 11PM
The zombie film that started them all! While out for an idyllic Sunday drive to visit their Father’s grave, Barbara and Johnny are suddenly attacked by the living dead. They and a few others take shelter in a farmhouse, but tensions grow along with the monsters’ hunger. As chilling today as it was 46 years ago.

november 2014 SCHEDULE Mongrel Media 20th Anniversary Film Series/// Since being founded in 1994, Toronto independent distributor, Mongrel Media has become an essential provider of independent and arthouse films, both Canadian and International. Throughout their evolution, they’ve gained a reputation in the film industry for going the extra mile to discover and expose to the public cinematic gems that might not otherwise make it to the mainstream. Over the last two decades, Mongrel has accumulated an astounding library of films. Metro is paying tribute to the diversity and quality of that collection with this nine-film celebration. We kick it off with Bye Bye Blues, filmed in Alberta by Anne Wheeler, and Pedro Almodovar’s award-winning Talk to Her (in an original 35mm print!). Throughout November, Sundays at Metro will showcase films from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and right here in Canada as we finish with the compelling classic, The Corporation. Congratulations on your Anniversary Mongrel Media, and thank you for 20 years of excellent cinema. We’re looking forward to at least 20 more!
Bye Bye Blues Canada 1989, 117 min, Digital, Dir: Anne Wheeler Oct 30 @ 7PM

Talk to Her (Hable con ella) Spain 2002, 112 min, 35mm, Dir: Pedro Almodóvar, Spanish w/ subtitles Oct 30 @ 9:30PM
One of Almodovar’s very best, this strange and lustrous love story involves two men and two comatose women (one of them a bullfighter). It sounds weird because it is weird - yet by the end it also feels very true, very natural, and totally heartfelt.” (VIFF)
The Secret of Kells Ireland 2009, 93 min, Digital, Dirs: Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey 1 @ 2PM
Young Brendan lives in the Abbey of Kells, a remote medieval outpost under threat from Viking hordes. But an exciting new chapter of adventure and danger awaits him when a master illuminator arrives with the legendary Book of Kells, a powerful but unfinished artifact capable of vanquishing the forces of darkness. With the hordes drawing closer, Brendan must embark on an epic quest through the enchanted forest to defeat a serpent god and complete the book… before it’s too late. (A Reel Family Cinema screening)
Offside Iran 2006, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Jafar Panahi, Persian w/ subtitles 2 @ 4PM
In Iran, all women are banned from men’s sporting events. In June of 2005, Iran defeated Bahrain to qualify for the World Cup. A disparate group of girls, united only by their desire to see their beloved team play live and in-person, disguise themselves in myriad ways, risking arrest to try to get into the game. Offside is a smart comedy that manages to illustrate the fight for women’s rights in Iran as well as well as remaining sensitive to others and the issues.
House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu) China/ Hong Kong 2004, 119 min, Digital, Dir: Yimou Zang, Mandarin w/ subtitles 9 @ 4PM
Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a young blind dancer, associated with a dangerous revolutionary gang, known as the House of Flying Daggers is captured by officers of the decadent Tang Dynasty. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire decisions, with far-ranging repercussions for herself and Lucy. The film addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people’s duty to each other in tough times.
The Class (Entre les Murs) France 2008, 128 min, Digital, Dir: Laurent Cantet, French w/ subtitles 23 @ 4PM Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The film is a razor-sharp look at one year in the life of a French high school class. It’s a terrific, cohesive work that makes the intellectual challenges of educating today’s youth seem thrilling rather than hopeless. It’s also built around a tremendous debut performance by François Bégaudeau, who co-authored the screenplay from his own novel - which in turn was based on his own experiences as a schoolteacher. (Now Magazine).
The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) Germany 2005, 137 min, 35mm, Dir: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, German w/ subtitles 29 @ 9:30PM
In 1984 East Berlin, an agent (Ulrich Muehe) of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives. Winner of the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. “A supremely intelligent, unfailingly honest look at a shadowy period in recent German history. (AO Scott, NY Times)
The Corporation Canada 2003, 145 min, Digital, Dirs: Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbott 30 @ 4PM
Provoking, witty, and sweepingly informative, the film explores the nature and spectacular rise of the dominant institution of our time. Taking its status as a legal “person” to the logical conclusion, the film puts the corporation on the psychiatrist’s couch to ask “What kind of person is it?” The Corporation includes interviews with 40 corporate insiders and critics - plus true case studies and strategies for change. “Since its supremely successful release in 2002 this homegrown documentary has only (and sadly) grown more timely.” (VIFF)

The contract is valid for 20 years. The Congress follows Robin as she makes her comeback after the contract expires, straight into the world of future fantasy cinema.

Recorded live at Björk’s show at London’s Alexandra Palace in 2013, the film features Björk and her band performing all songs on ‘Biophilia’ and more, using a broad variety of instruments - digital, traditional and some completely unclassifiable.”There are not many artists who can combine the lifecycle of a jellyfish with a breakbeat and make it work.” But this is an extraordinary piece… (The Guardian) Encores: 8, 10 @ 9:15PM.

Alice Czechoslovakia 1988, 86 min, Digital, Dir: Jan Švankmajer, Czech w/ subtitles 10 @ 7PM
Olesya Komarnytska is one of the FOH staff at Metro. She is involved in local theatre, film and pun production. When people ask her about the most out of place letter in her last name, she replies with “why”. You’re all familiar with the story of Alice and her adventures in Wonderland. You’ve heard her tale told and retold through comics, cartoons, live-action films, and literature. But have you experienced Wonderland as seen through Jan Švankmajer’s looking glass? In Alice, stop motion animation melts into live action, to create a world and a film that will at once confuse, delight, disturb, and amaze. It certainly had that effect on me the first time I saw it. To date, I think this it is the most imaginative film I have ever seen and with it, Švankmajer has confirmed that the best people usually are mad. - Olesya Komarnytska
Ishtar USA 1987, 107 min, Digital, Dir: Elaine May 11 @ 7PM
In the olden times, before Waterworld, there was a legend from the desert. In this epic myth, a trio of classic heroes - a Hollywood heartthrob, his talented yet quirky sidekick, and an innovative comedic genius - went utterly insane in the Moroccan heat, spent a hump-ful of money, and created the biggest bomb of the 1980’s. This musical is as dry as the sand surrounding it, with non singers Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman (heartthrob and quirky, respectively) croaking their way through a forgettable score while running from the CIA and a host of stereotypical villains of the desert. Elaine May, an undisputed master of the humorous arts, was undoubtedly overcome by heat stroke, leaving the actual direction to a nearby camel.
Sign Painters USA 2014, 120 min, Digital, Dirs: Faythe Levine, Sam Macon 17 @ 7PM
At a time when most cityscapes are dominated by computer created signage, Sign Painters takes a close look at the past, present, and hopeful future of the hand painted sign industry. This documentary profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media. Their stories celebrate efforts to keep the tradition intact, while balancing art and commerce. Presented by the Graphic Designers of Canada - Alberta North Chapter. Silver screen passes only.

Crime Watch/// Se7en USA 1995, 127 min, Digital, Dir: David Fincher 18 @ 7PM
7 macabre, Old Testament style murders, 2 mismatched homicide detectives, 1 self-righteous sociopath with a biblical axe to grind, and 1 mysterious box. Put them together, drop them into the urban and moral decay of a bleak New York Cityscape, and mix liberally with a palpable sense of doom, and you get one of the grisliest serial killer crime thrillers of the 90s. With its cast of acting heavyweights, gruesome special effects, and creative typography, Se7en helped define a sub genre and earned Fincher filmmaker star-status long before the Academy recognized him for The Social Network. And moral of the story? Don’t open the box.

While boldly going where no man etc. etc., Kirk crosses the path of his old enemy Khan, who was the chief antagonist in the episode “Space Seed.” Leading a crew of near - savage space prisoners, Khan insinuates himself into the Genesis Project - designed to introduce living organisms on long-dead planets. Intending to harness this program for his own despotic purposes, Khan engages in battle with the Enterprise crew. (Hal Erickson, Rovi)

Submit the Documentary exposes the epic struggle in the digital, Internet age: cyberbullying. Cult Cinema/// There Will Be Blood USA 2007, 158 min, Digital, Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson 25 @ 9PM
There Will Be Blood is bravura filmmaking by one of American film’s modern masters. Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic poem of savagery, optimism and obsession is a true meditation on America. The film drills down into the dark heart of capitalism, where domination, not gain, is the ultimate goal. In a career defined by transcendent performances, Daniel Day-Lewis creates a character so rich and so towering, that “Daniel Plainview” will haunt the history of film for generations to come. (AFI)

Spotlight on Robert Altman/// Robert Altman was possibly the quintessential American filmmaker, creating films about many facets of American life, from the Korean War to the Western frontier to Hollywood. A true original, he cut his teeth on television shows before he scored a box office hit with “M*A*S*H, a script 15 other directors had turned down. Prior to his death in 2006, he had over 85 directorial/writing credits to his name whose cinematic themes often reflected his commitment to challenging societal values. Metro is proud to present Altman, a new documentary about his life along with a selection of three of his finest.

Presbyterian Church is a small mining town in the turn-of-the-century Pacific Northwest and a perfect place where a gambler (Warren Beatty) and a bordello madam (Julie Christie) can do business. Altmans dazzlingly original wilderness saga stands the mythology of the Old West on its ear to become a modern classic. ‘It is not often given to a director to make a perfect film. Some spend their lives trying, but always fall short. Robert Altman has made a dozen films that can be called great in one way or another, but one of them is perfect, and that one is McCabe & Mrs. Miller.”’ (Roger Ebert)

M*A*S*H USA 1970, 116 min, Digital, Dir: Robert Altman 28 @ 9PM, Dec 3 @ 7PM
One of the reasons M*A*S*H is so funny is that it’s so desperate. It’s set in a surgical hospital just behind the front lines in Korea, and it is drenched in blood. Most comedies want us to laugh at things that aren’t really funny; in this one we laugh precisely because they’re not funny. We laugh, that we may not cry. There is something about war that inspires practical jokes and the heroes (Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, and cronies) are inspired and utterly heartless…this is the insane logic of M*A*S*H, which is achieved through a peculiar marriage of cinematography, acting, directing, and writing. (Roger Ebert)
USA 1992, 124 min, Digital, Dir: Robert Altman 30 @ 7PM, Dec 4 @ 9PM
Rising young executive Griffin (Tim Robbins) is tormented by threats from an anonymous writer. The pressure and paranoia build until he loses control one night and semiaccidentally kills screenwriter David, who may or may not be the source of the threats. But the film represents something miraculous: a return to the infinitely sly and supple virtuosity that marked his great work of the ‘70s. (Owen Gleiberman)
