new releases

Mother! USA 2017, 121 min, Dir: Darren Aronofsky NOV 5 @ 9:30PM, NOV 7 @ 9:30PM, NOV 9 @ 3PM, NOV 10 @ 3:30PM, NOV 14 @ 9:30PM

Mother! begins as a slow-burn and builds towards a furious blaze when a couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. Awash in both religious and contemporary political imagery, Darren Aronofsky’s allusive film certainly opens itself to a number of allegorical readings, but it also works as a straight-ahead head rush.[Indiewire] Screening as part of Controversy! Films of Darren Aronofsky (see page 7).

Dunkirk UK/Netherlands/France/USA 2017, 106 min, Dir: Christopher Nolan NOV 10 @ 1PM, NOV 11 @ 1PM, NOV 13 @ 9PM

During the Battle of France in World War II, Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are cut off from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, and surrounded by the German army. Using every means possible, over 300,000 soldiers must be evacuated from there. “Christopher Nolan revisits a harrowing story of survival and resistance in World War II with skill and craft.” (NY Times)

Human Flow Germany 2017, 140 min, Dir: Ai Weiwei NOV 17 @ 6:45PM, NOV 17 @ 9:30PM, NOV 18 @ 6:45PM, NOV 19 @ 3:15PM, NOV 20 @ 6:45PM, NOV 21 @ 9PM, NOV 23 @ 9:30PM, NOV 24 @ 6:45PM, NOV 26 @ 1PM

Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration.

Lucky USA 2017, 88 min, Dir: John Carroll Lynch DEC 1 @ 7PM, DEC 2 @ 4:15PM, DEC 3 @ 7PM, DEC 6 @ 9:30PM, DEC 7 @ 7PM, DEC 9 @ 2PM

Lucky follows the spiritual journey of a 90 year old atheist and the quirky characters that inhabit his off the map desert town. Having outlived and out smoked all of his contemporaries, the fiercely independent Lucky finds himself at the precipice of life, thrust into a journey of self-exploration. The film is at once a love letter to the life and career of Harry Dean Stanton as well as a meditation on mortality, loneliness, spirituality, and human connection. Screening as part of Harry Dean Stanton Tribute (see page 19).

Your Name (Kimi no na wa) The Villainess (Ak-Nyeo) South Korea 2017, 129 min, Dir: Byung-gil Jung Korean with subtitles NOV 19 @ 9:30PM, NOV 20 @ 9:30PM, Nov 22 @ 9:30PM

Japan 2016, 106 min, Dir: Makoto Shinkai Japanese with subtitles DEC 1 @ 9PM, DEC 2 @ 7PM, DEC 4 @ 9:30PM

Two strangers in different parts of the country, a teenage boy and girl, embark on a quest to meet each other for the first time after they find themselves linked in a bizarre way. When a connection forms, will distance be the only thing to keep them apart?

Sweet Virginia Canada/USA 2017, 105 min, Dir: Jamie M. Dagg NOV 24 @ 9:30PM, NOV 26 @ 7PM, NOV 27 @ 7PM, NOV 28 @ 9:30PM, NOV 30 @ 9:30PM

Manji, a highly skilled samurai, becomes cursed with immortality after a legendary battle. Haunted by the brutal murder of his sister, Manji knows that only fighting evil will regain his soul. He promises to help a young girl named Rin avenge her parents, who were killed by a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu. Screening as part of 100 Film Career – Takashi Miike Spotlight (see page 19).

Loving Vincent UK/Poland 2017, 94 min, Dir: Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman DEC 8 @ 7PM, DEC 9 @ 9:30PM, DEC 10 @ 2PM, DEC 11 @ 7PM, DEC 14 @ 7PM

Loving Vincent explores the life and work of Vincent van Gogh through an animation process where 65,000 frames, shown at 24 frames per second, were individually hand painted by a collection of 125 painters. The film revolves around a man attempting to deliver one of van Gogh’s final letters to his brother in Paris during the summer of 1891.

Another WolfCop Canada 2017, 82 min, Dir: Lowell Dean DEC 30 @ 10:30PM, DEC 31 @ 4:30PM

Alcoholic werewolf cop Lou Garou springs into action when an eccentric businessman with evil intentions seduces Woodhaven’s residents with a new brewery and hockey team in this outrageous horror-comedy sequel.

SERIES & REPERTORY Controversy! Films of Darren Aronofsky Darren Aronofsky’s films have sparked many post-screening debates, often polarized between love and hate. Just as Mother! seems to deliberately confound and intrigue, these three earlier works continue to spark strong emotion in their viewers as well.

Requiem for a Dream Pi USA 1998, 84 min, Dir: Darren Aronofsky NOV 6 @ 9:30PM

Numbers whiz Max Cohen is stunted by psychological delusions of paranoia and debilitating headaches. One day, however, Cohen encounters a mysterious number. Soon after reporting his discovery, he finds himself the target of ill-intentioned Wall Street agents bent on using the number for profit.

USA 2000, 102 min, Dir: Darren Aronofsky NOV 8 @ 9:30PM

Imaginatively evoking the inner landscape of human beings longing to connect, to love, and feel loved, the film is a parable of happiness gloriously found and tragically lost. Requiem for a Dream tells parallel stories that are linked by the relationship between a lonely widow and her sweet but aimless son. The plump widow, galvanized by the prospect of appearing on a TV game show, has started on a dangerous diet regimen to beautify herself.

The Wrestler USA 2008, 109 min, Dir: Darren Aronofsky NOV 13 @ 1PM, NOV 15 @ 9:30PM Aging wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson is long past his prime but still ready and rarin’ to go on the pro-wrestling circuit. After a particularly brutal beating, however, Randy hangs up his tights, pursues a serious relationship, and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. However he can’t resist the lure of the ring, and readies himself for a comeback. metrocinema.org

Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Canada 2017, 103 min, Dir: Catherine Bainbridge, Alfonso Maiorana DEC 5 @ 7PM

USA 1997, 99 min, Dir: Jay Roach NOV 11 @ 9:30PM

This powerful documentary about the role of Native Americans in contemporary music history— featuring some of the greatest music stars of our time—exposes a critical missing chapter. It reveales how indigenous musicians helped shape the soundtracks of our lives and influenced popular culture through their contributions. With live music performance by Jay Gilday at 6:30. Film at 7:00.

Yeah baby! Get a double dose of nostalgia, as this gleefully retro Mike Myers spy romp contrasts 60’s free love and 90’s nastiness. Superspy Austin Powers is cryogenically frozen and turned loose again in the 1990’s to face his nemesis, Dr. Evil (“I didn’t spend six years in Evil Medical School to be called ‘Mister Evil’”), wear shag-tastic clothes, and above all else, BEHAVE!

Tommy Wiseau’s The Room

The Room USA 2003, 99 min, Dir: Tommy Wiseau NOV 10 @ 11:30PM, NOV 25 @ TBA, DEC 8 @ 11:30PM, DEC 22 @ 11:30PM

Be sure to catch Tommy and his friends the first Friday of the month for a late night screening this classic piece of so-badit’s-good cinema. You’re our favourite customer. Thanks a lot! Bye. Audience participation is encouraged, but please respect the theatre and fellow patrons.

Die Hard USA 1988, 131 min, Dir: John McTiernan DEC 23 @ 7PM

Bruce Willis is iconic as John McClane, the everyman-ish NYPD cop trapped in an office tower with eurotrash terrorists on Christmas Eve. You are ecstatic as patrons trapped in a movie theatre on Christmas Eve Eve, shouting out your favourite lines. Yippee Ki Yay!

Canada on Screen The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) showcases some of the most significant moving-image productions ever made in Canada’s history based on a national poll of industry professionals, presented across the country throughout 2017. Free Admission

Stuck living together in a mansion in old Hollywood, Blanche plots to get even with Jane for the car crash that left her crippled. Featuring the films: Neighbours (Canada 1952, 8 min, Dir: Norman McLaren), Begone Dull Care (Canada 1949, 8 min, Dir: Evelyn Lambart, Norman McLaren), The Heart of the World (Canada 2000, 6 min, Dir: Guy Maddin), My Winnipeg (Canada 2007, 80 min, Dir: Guy Maddin)

Black Christmas (1974) Canada/USA 1974, 98 min, Dir: Bob Clark DEC 22 @ 9:15PM It’s time for Christmas break, and the sorority sisters make plans for the holiday, but the strange anonymous phone calls are beginning to put them on edge. The police finally begin to get concerned when a 13-year-old girl is found dead in the park. Despicable Me 3 USA 2017, 90 min, Dir: Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin, Eric Guillon NOV 12 @ 1PM

After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother—a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps—one former super villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be bad.

Home Alone USA 1990, 103 min, Dir: Chris Columbus DEC 16 @ 2PM

The Goonies USA 1985, 114 min, Dir: Richard Donner NOV 18 @ 1PM

A group of friends who call themselves “The Goonies” find a treasure map which leads to millions of dollars worth of gold which would be enough to save their homes from closure. However, what they don’t know is that a trio of Italian criminals are also trying to grab hold of the gold.

Presented by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Science in the Cinema film screenings shine a light on science in popular culture. Providing a fun and engaging venue for learning about health research and innovation at the University of Alberta, each screening is followed by a Q & A with invited expert respondents. Free admission and free small popcorn.

The Madness of King George UK 1994, 104 min, Dir: Nicholas Hytner NOV 16 @ 6:30PM

A meditation on power, and the metaphor of the body of state, based on the real episode of dementia experienced by George III (now suspected a victim of porphyria, a blood disorder). As he loses his senses, he becomes both more alive, and more politically marginalized. Neither effect is desirable to his Lieutenants, who jimmy the rules to avoid a challenge to regal authority, raising the question of who is really in charge. Panel discussion following the screening.

A Christmas Story

The Wizard of OZ

USA/Canada 1983, 94 min, Dir: Bob Clark DEC 2 @ 2PM

USA 1939, 102 min. Dir: Victor Flemming DEC 30 @ 2PM

Based on the humorous writings of author Jean Shepherd, this beloved holiday movie follows the wintry exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker, who spends most of his time dodging a bully and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a “Red Ryder air rifle.” Frequently at odds with his cranky dad but comforted by his doting mother, Ralphie struggles to make it to Christmas Day with his glasses and his hopes intact. 10

In this charming film based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado’s path and somehow end up in the Land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

Kendra is a House Manager at Metro Cinema, and currently in school for biological sciences with animal conservation as the end goal. In addition, she designs, sews, and sells lingerie, and has a vested interest in arts, community, and the city of Edmonton as a whole! She chose this film because: “MST3K: The Movie provides hilarious commentary on a campy film, adding an additional layer of cheese to an already cheesy dish. I hope you’re not lactose intolerant! I chose this film simply because it makes my sides hurt and, if you’re searching for deeper meaning, it teaches that humour is a powerful tool to get through life’s biggest challenges.”

The Mysterious Monsters USA, 1975, 86 min, Dir: Robert Guenette NOV 18 @ MIDNIGHT

Join your fellow monster fans as we explore the mystery together!

Lady Macbeth

The Sound of Music

UK 2016, 89 min, Dir: William Oldroyd NOV 19 @ 1PM

USA 1965, 174 min, Dir: Robert Wise DEC 17 @ 12:30PM

William Oldroyd made his name as a theatre director, but goodness, what a feature film debut this is! Rural England, 1865. Katherine is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and by his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

One of the best-loved musicals of all time, The Sound of Music perfectly captures a simple time and a beautiful story. Based on best of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musicals, the film is anchored by Julie Andrews’ career-defining performance as Maria, counterbalanced by Christopher Plummer’s terse Captain and delightfully upstaged by seven kids and impish nuns. Perhaps we’ll serve tea, a drink with jam and bread.

Metro Retro Fantastic, entertaining movies deserve time on the big screen as they were meant to be seen, regardless of when they were released. Metro Cinema is proud to unearth beloved films of the past, remastered for today’s cinemas.
