Synopsis Act I In Hansel and Gretel’s house. Hansel complains he is hungry. Gretel shows him some milk that a neighbor has given for the family’s supper. The children dance. Their mother returns and wants to know why they have gotten so little work done. She accidentally spills the milk and chases the children out into the woods to pick strawberries. Their father, a broom-maker, returns home drunk. He brings out the food he has bought, then asks where the children have gone. The mother tells him that she has sent them into the woods. He tells her about the Witch who lives there and says that the children are in danger. They go out into the woods to look for them.

Act II Hansel picks strawberries. The children hear a cuckoo singing and eat the strawberries. Soon they have eaten every one. In the sudden silence of the wood, Hansel admits to Gretel that he has lost the way. The children grow frightened. The Sandman comes to bring them sleep, sprinkling sand over their eyes. The children say their evening prayer. In a dream, they see 14 angels.

Act III The Dew Fairy comes to waken the children. Gretel wakes Hansel, and they see the gingerbread house. They end up in the Witch’s kitchen. The Witch decides to fatten Hansel up and casts a spell on him. The oven is hot. Gretel breaks the Witch’s spell and sets Hansel free. When the Witch asks her to look in the oven, she pretends she doesn’t know how to: the Witch must show her. When the Witch peers into the oven, the children shove her inside and shut the door. The oven explodes. The gingerbread children come back to life. The mother and father find the children, and all express gratitude for their salvation.

Director’s Notes

H

aving only directed short one-acts in the past, this is my first big directing project, and I pray and hope that this is not my last. From the auditions all the way up to the very last moment, this cast and team have been nothing short of an absolute joy to work with.

The tale of Hansel and Gretel is one that has taken many shapes throughout the years. Here is a brand new one just for you! Using the script written by Lillian and Robert Masters and borrowing the music from the infamous opera by Engelbert Humperdink, this brand new production of Hansel and Gretel has grown into a new musical treat suitable for the entire family! Within this particular version of the production, I feel that it speaks very keenly to the concept of “hope.” Hope is such a powerful motivator – it allows someone to make the best out of a bad situation, seek help, and make the bleakest of circumstances look pretty. Dare I say…candy-filled. For me, that is what this production should give us: if we can find hope, we can overcome any obstacle, even if a solution doesn’t present itself. That hope can come from a guardian angel. A prayer that comforts us. A friend or family member who would do anything for us. Or even a nice taste of candy! I hope this production fills you with some spiritual hope. Regardless of where life may take you, I hope you always find that person, place, or thing that gives you hope and comfort. For without hope, we would be stuck in a never ending circle of monotony. My deepest thanks to everyone involved in this fabulous production. To the cast: you all are fabulous, wonderful, and so very talented! To Robbie, Ron, and James: your technical expertise is never ending and your dedication to bringing the show to life really inspires me. To Allene and Cassie: you two have been my “great rock,” having aided me in the process, kept us trodding along smoothly, and bringing a fabulous expertise that inspires and motivates me! To Kathleen: so passionate, gentle, and funny, you have always been a pleasure to work with. Thanks again, my Dorothy! To Meghan: our first big project together, and I hope not the last! Your musical expertise amazes me and I have learned a lot in the music department thanks to your fantastic musical knowledge and direction. To Kercelyn: what can I say to you that I haven’t already said to you? You’re one of my best friends and I owe so much to you. All that’s left is…ARRRR! (Don’t ask). And lastly…to YOU! Without our audience, we would be storytellers with no one to listen to the story. Thank you for supporting the arts and the development of these fabulous young individuals. And if you are one of their parents, I will send thousands of verbal thanks to pay for gas money and all of the production assistance! Enjoy the show and have a fabulously sweet-tooth-filled long weekend!

Josh Languedoc
