THE MARKET AWAITS YOU. You’re not reading this because you’re excited about real estate development, commercial growth or transit expansion. Nor urban design, local food and wares, cultural events or the arts. Sure, you may care about those things—and that’s good, because there’s lots of that going on at Stony Plain Road. But why are you really flipping through these pages? Because you’re looking for something—somewhere—special. We’re building that something special right here and right now at Stony Plain Road. It’s called the Market District, and it’s an idea whose time has come. Think accessible transportation, local living, vibrant street culture and engaged communities. Think colourful public spaces, performing arts and handcrafted goods. Sound special? We think so. There’s nothing else like The Market District in Edmonton, or Alberta, or even the Prairies. And we can’t wait to tell you about it. So read on— the Market awaits you. Sincerely, Diane Kereluk Executive Director Stony Plain Road and Area Business Association

s the MLA for Edmonton-Glenora, I believe quality of life and community vibrancy are the keys to success for any endeavour. I spend most of my days promoting and leveraging the cultural dimensions of our society and our economy, and I believe there is nothing we can’t accomplish, if, as neighbours, we work together with our local businesses and community organizations to make change a reality. Our Stony Plain Road business district can be a source of pride and success for our area. I have seen many successes blossom when neighbours and communities come together to partner with like-minded organizations like the Stony Plain Road BRZ to achieve success. It’s that Alberta “can-do spirit” that gives our communities the vibrancy that will make people come back for more.

HOW WE GOT HERE THE STONY PLAIN ROAD AREA HAS TRANSFORMED FROM A LOOSE COLLECTION OF HOMESTEADS AND THEN VILLAGES—CONNECTED BY A THROUGH ROAD— INTO A MAJOR EDMONTON COMMERCIAL DISTRICT. The early years Mid 1800s: homesteaders settle the area that would eventually become west Edmonton 1907 - 12: Communities of Glenwood, Westlawn, West Jasper Place established 1912: Stony Plain Road created. Post-war boom 1948: The population of Jasper Place grows to 4000 people; many moved out of Edmonton to escape taxes.
Stony Plain Road was originally the road connecting the western town of Stony Plain to Edmonton. The name may also allude to the Stoney First Nations, who were known to roam the region in times past. City of Edmonton Archives, EA 596-863
13
In the 1940s, Edmonton’s trolley system ran up to 149 Street— making for a relatively easy commute to and from the city for residents in the communities surrounding Stony Plain Road. City of Edmonton Archives, EA 275-323
1950: Jasper Place (formerly the hamlet of West Jasper Place) becomes a town. 1953: Jasper Place passes a bylaw allowing night shopping until 9 p.m. The village becomes famous as the place where “night shopping is the law.” August 17, 1964: Town of Jasper Place amalgamates with the City of Edmonton, with 38,000 residents and over $8 million in debt.
The modern era 1981: Grant MacEwan College opens Jasper Place campus on Stony Plain Road 2006: Stony Plain Road and Area Business Association established.
14
Many residents were resistant to the 1964 amalgamation with Edmonton. As an expression of community independence Jasper Place High School renamed its sports teams the Rebels. Though sentiment changed with time, the name lives on.

WHERE WE ARE TODAY When was the last time you visited Stony Plain Road? Today’s Stony Plain Road is more welcoming, more attractive and more vibrant than ever. New park spaces and gathering areas, widened south-facing sidewalks, more native trees and emboldened greenery … are all lending to a more natural, community feel. These and other measures are part of streetscaping initiatives in 2013-15 to enhance attractiveness and traffic safety, incorporate green design and encourage social engagement.
Phyllis Bright and her husband have owned The Flag Shop for 20 years. Their flags have been used for skydiving routines with the Snowbirds and carried onto the home field at Edmonton Eskimos games, among other things. Says Bright, “It’s a destination location, for sure. [The Business Association] has done an absolutely amazing job of just making it a nicer place to work and shop and live, and a safer place.” EIDOS Consultants Incorperated

Revitalization, transit development, and trends toward local living, green development and cottage industry … have set the stage for the new Stony Plain Road public market. Transforming Stony Plain Road into Edmonton’s first public market is a natural outgrowth of recent community planning and cultural events that have been infusing life into the area the last few years. Get a feel for the flavour by coming down to the one day back alley YEGmarket - Stony Plain Road’s new public market event on Sunday, August 24th, 9 to 5. And check out page 34 for more information on how to win a shopping spree on Stony Plain Road by visiting our Market District website at YEGmarket.ca
Nobby Miyagishima founded Tireland on Stony Plain Road in 1976. Nearly 40 years later, his daughter Sharon and her husband Garth Hough are keeping up the family tradition. “I’ve got kids that come in that my own kids went to school with,” says Hough. “I deal with their grandparents and their moms and dads and now the kids are driving.” “There’s no razzle dazzle, no smoke and mirrors—we’re pretty clean cut here. Nothing gets done that doesn’t need to get done,” Hough says proudly. “We like to show customers why they need the decision that the mechanic has made on the car.” 19
WHERE WE’RE GOING:
THE VISION
EIDOS Consultants Incorperated
“PIKE PLACE HAS BEEN AROUND FOR SEVERAL GENERATIONS NOW. IT’S DEVELOPED INTO A COMMUNITY DESTINATION. NOW, IT’S KIND OF COOL THAT STONY PLAIN ROAD HAS GRASPED THIS.” - STEFAN JOHANNSON, EIDOS CONSULTANTS Imagine the street in song. The sizzle of fresh vegetables sautéing in a pan, the murmur of browsing shoppers, the strum of a guitar. Someone’s knitting needles clicking time, someone’s paintbrush rasping over canvas. Bursts of music and laughter. Maybe it brings to mind Pike Place in Seattle, or the cobbled streets of Old Quebec. But what is a public market, anyway? More than just a glorified farmer’s market, a public market is a place where the sharing of goods and talents goes beyond simple transactions, to the foundations of sustainable living—simple, green, affordable, accessible, local. The model has its origins in European street markets. And now, the time is ripe for Edmonton to have its own Market District. 20

WHERE WE’RE GOING:
RALL VIEW LOOKING SOUTH
THE PLAN
The Market District will be centered around an anchor block—Block 152— and spread several blocks in either direction, with vendors, businesses and exhibits. “There might be a zone for collectibles—maps, books, a furniture zone, a clothing zone, a food zone,” says Stefan Johannson, lead landscape architect on the project, with EIDOS Consultants. The north alley will act as a “continuous pedestrian space,” Johannson continues. Open spaces and parks will support access to the area via transit, vehicle and bicycle. “The other thing that’s really cool about public markets is that, in order to be a destination, they spread out the experience, rather than just concentrated hours. There’s a performing arts aspect, dining…” Almost anything you can imagine, in fact. And that’s just the beginning. 24
Pop-up retail: spaces for entrepreneurs and specialty products—only found here!
Patio dining: potential for new patios or dining areas spilling onto the market
You: imagine yourself here— how will you be a part of the market?
Food trucks: new and different flavours to enhance local fare
Performance space: community events, concerts, arts groups and festivals!
Covered market: for those cold Edmonton winter months – after all, this is likely the northernmost public market in the world

WHERE WE’RE GOING: GETTING INVOLVED Being in the early stages of market development, every idea is open to explore. The doors are being thrown open wide. Entrepreneurs will find a space where they can establish themselves and grow their ideas. Actors, artists, musicians and street performers will have opportunities to showcase their talents. Retailers, restaurants and other services on the street will find new settings and creative new ways to bring new customers through the door.
The incubator effect
“Part of this whole vision of the market is as an incubator. “There are so many brilliant people, who have a great product but no distribution. So that what you get is that ‘you can only buy it here’ effect,” says Stefan Johannson of EIDOS Consultants. “Pike Place started off in a very poor neighbourhood, and just through the virtue of local people – they were artisans, producers – they may not have had enough money for a store but there was enough energy, and cool products. “The market gives them distribution, then what they’ll do is they’ll move from a table to leasing a building, and then from buying the building to redeveloping it.”

DINING With over 25 restaurants and dining establishments calling Stony Plain Road home, what better way to get a taste of the flavours the new Market District will bring forth? Some of the cornerstone restaurants in the area have been around for decades. On the east end, Tasty Tomato and Il Forno are two popular mainstays serving classic Italian fare that has kept Edmontonians coming back for years. Ethnic cuisine has also spiced up the local palate in recent years — Ban Thai, Tropica Malaysian Cuisine, La Shish Taouk, Miso Japanese Cuisine, Pho Binh Vietnamese Restaurant, Hot Wok, Moon Palace, the list goes on. On the west end, a handful of new restaurants have sprung up lately, making it a culinary draw for those who like to follow a moment’s whim. From Guru or Daawaat, to Joey’s Grill, Chili’s or Earl’s, to fresh food on the go—Wok Box, Opa Souvlaki, Press’d—all you have to do is head west and let your tastebuds decide when you get there. Of course, a market area wouldn’t be complete without places to find those great ingredients for preparing your own culinary masterpieces, like Ben’s Meat and Deli, Winning Wines Plus and Ocean Odyssey Inland. And with plans to encourage creative new ways to experience food at the Market District, you can bet it’s only going to get better. 28

MARKET BUZZ “Fantastic—it will draw people to the neighbourhood, and once they’re here they’ll see what else is here.” - Richard Anderson, Blue Jar Antique Mall
“By offering something that you cannot get anywhere else in the city, the community will benefit by having a hub in the heart of Stony Plain Road that will make the area safer and more vibrant. This new district is crucial to the long-term revitalization plans of Stony Plain Road.” - Andrew Knack, City Councillor, Ward 1
“We’ve been here since 1991, and we’ve definitely seen it come around. For us it was great because we’ve really been able to grow with our business. We’re central, with low rent [and] we’re two blocks from the river valley.” - Dennis Aronyk, owner, Revolution Cycle
“It’s not like a big mall; there’s some edge to this.” - Stefan Johannson, EIDOS Consultants

FASHION & STYLE In the fashion game, it’s about uniquely personal items matched with brands you can trust for a look you can call your own. Formal attire, hip threads or one-of-a-kind accessories, it’s all within your reach on Stony Plain Road—whether you’re dressing up yourself or your home. For high-end apparel, the racks at Unique Boutique and Woman Boutique boast the latest styles. On the other end of the spectrum, a host of local vintage shops offer casual chic on a budget. But perhaps the best finds of all are in antiques and home decor. Old typewriters, wooden snowshoes, gas lamps and brass kettles gleam in the corners of the Blue Jar Antique Mall. Similarly, the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store and Vintage Antiques boast treasures of their own, just waiting for the right eye to discover. Or, for an heirloom of your own that will last generations, a custom, handcrafted piece of wood furniture at Kudos For Wood Furniture may fit the bill perfectly. Vintage, contemporary, classic, unique—it’s just a hint of what the Market will bring to Edmonton.
