director’s notes What a better way to experience the magic of the season then with the magic of Mary Poppins. The world of Mary Poppins is populated by characters both wondrous and colourful and this is just as true in our volunteer cast and crew. Our cast of 30 includes teachers, lawyers, students (Elementary to High School) nurses, baristas, and engineers. They all have been hard at work dusting off their tap shoes, stretching their voices, and for some going way outside their comfort zone by making Mary Poppins their first steps back on stage since high

The Peking Acrobats February 4, 2016

4:00 PM & 7:00 PM Genre: Family For the last 30 years, THE PEKING ACROBATS have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs; they are experts at trickcycling, precision tumbling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They defy gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control. They push the envelope of human possibility with astonishing juggling dexterity and incredible balancing feats, showcasing tremendous skill and ability. They are masters of agility and grace. Often accompanied by live musicians skillfully playing traditional Chinese instruments and high-tech special effects that coalesce with the music and aweinspiring feats to create an exuberant entertainment event featuring all the excitement and festive pageantry of a Chinese Carnival! The ability to perform the astounding is rooted in centuries of Chinese history and folk art. Records of acrobatic acts can be found as early as the Ch’in Dynasty

(221 B.C. - 207 B.C.) and Chinese acrobats through the ages have continued to perfect what has become an evolving folk art form. Tradition demands that each generation of acrobats add its own improvements and embellishments. Because of the unusual and difficult nature of the feats involved, high honor is conferred upon those skilled enough to become acrobats; an acrobat can be considered the Chinese equivalent of an American opera star. It is telling that the Chinese acrobatic tradition just gets stronger, due to the continued innovation of the artists and the endless enthusiasm from their adoring public. A performance by THE PEKING ACROBATS, therefore, brings with it the opportunity to view the epitome of a rich and ancient folk art tradition, highlighted by today’s technology melding the ancient and traditional with the modern wonders of the 21st Century. As the Seattle Times reports: “Nearly everything THE PEKING ACROBATS did last night was amazing - and stunning, and breathtaking and WOW!” and Clive Davis of the New York Post sums it up thusly: “THE PEKING ACROBATS [are] pushing the envelope of human possibility. Pure artistry!” So, join us as we embark on THE PEKING ACROBATS Gala 30th Anniversary Tour and our Year of the Monkey Celebrations!

Lizz Wright April 23, 2016 7:30 P.M. Genre: Jazz Lizz Wright’s Freedom & Surrender, the follow-up to 2011’s gospel-themed Fellowship is an impressive collection of soothing and elegant tracks. The eclectic songs, which comprise originals and covers, veer from folk to blues to jazz and to soul. “Lizz Wright finds a new sensual register on Freedom & Surrender” raves The New York Times “Wright has unequivocally delivered her best album yet” says DownBeat The album sees her teaming up with producer Larry Klein, a seasoned hand in the singer-songwriter field (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux, Tracy Chapman). Having escaped a near death experience earlier in the year where her car was suspended over a frozen ravine, Lizz’s approach to this record was a shift in

gears to those previous, and it seems to have paid off. Supported by the brilliance, wisdom, and friendship of Klein, Wright’s own fulfillment and enjoyment from the creative process of this album is evident. The album illuminates her dynamic soul through the layers of passion and playfulness found within the songs. “I was actually just super grateful that I finally had an encounter with death. I’m a preacher’s kid, I’m big-boned, I have giant feet and I’ve always been able to run fast, and so I had this sense of, “I can’t fail. I’m invincible. I’m made of green juice and concrete; nothing’s gonna happen to me.” So it was great to walk into the studio with this really tender reverence for my life, and profound gratitude and wonder”.
