S

he’s practically perfect in every way. The story of Mary Poppins is one that brings to mind many of our childhoods. Whether its PL Travers’ classic literary series or Julie Andrew’s Academy Award winning depiction in Disney’s 1964 film, it seems that everyone has a memory associated with the children of Cherry Tree Lane, the charming chimney sweep and of course Mary herself. Bringing such iconic characters to life can become a challenge with something so well known, but it’s a challenge that the cast and production team of The Festival Players, Festival Place’s community theatre group, are more than willing to take on. The stage version of Disney and Cameron Macintosh’s Mary Poppins is a bit different from the movie you may remember. The script, written by Julian Fellowes (yes – the same person who writes Downton Abbey) follows the first book closely, adding in new songs, while preserving the beloved classics. You’ll still hear your favorites, like “Feed the Birds”, “Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. It’s the story that you know and love, told in a totally new way. Our “Mary” comes to us from with experience is both Opera and Musical Theatre, with a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the U of A and a Diploma in Musical

Theatre from Grant MacEwan. Gianna Reid’s training has taken her across Canada, but she’s landed her feet firmly on our stage in the role of “Mary”. For Gianna, the show will be many firsts; it’s her first title character in a musical, her first time working with Director Brian Bast, Choreographer Shelley Tookey, and Musical Director Michael Clark, her first time working at Festival Place and her first time flying in a show. Like all of us, these are songs she’s grown up playing and understandably that can be a little nerve wracking. But we have confidence that Gianna is practically perfect for the role of everyone’s favorite nanny. The effects, well that’s a completely different kind of magic! As with 2011’s The Wizard of Oz, we’ve brought in professionals to help us bring some of Mary Poppins’ iconic scenes to life! Mary isn’t just going to walk onto the stage… she travels by way of her black umbrella with the parrot handle! The roof tops of Edwardian London will set the stage for the loveable band of Chimney Sweeps in “Step In Time”; Burt will not only dance his

way across the stage, but he’ll defy gravity by walking up the side of the proscenium and across the top of stage! Burt will be upside down for almost a full minute, singing and dancing along the way. ZFX, the company responsible for teaching us how to fly, is one of the premier flying companies, working on Broadway for the musical Wicked, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the Imagine Dragons Tour and America’s Got Talent amongst many other things. They’re the very best in what they do and they’ll bring the spectacular magic to Mary Poppins this holiday season. Disney & Cameron Macintosh’s Mary Poppins isn’t just a way for us to show off around the holiday season. It’s a tradition – tradition for the performers who year after year make their way across our stage during their Christmas holidays – tradition for the audiences who have come each and every year for the past 13 to share their love of theatre with their children, grandchildren, family and friends – and tradition for the staff who look forward to being a little part of the joy that the holiday season brings.

Your Night… Your Song with Sandro Dominelli and His Grand Band Everyone has that song… that one song that is deeply engrained into their lives, their songs, their souls! It could be a song that reminds you of your childhood, the song you and your spouse danced to on your wedding day, a lullaby you sang your kids to sleep, or that one song you learned how to play on the piano before you decided to quit piano lessons. There’s so much more to music than just a melody; its connected to our souls like nothing else could be, rhythmically providing the background to everyday life. Wouldn’t it be neat if you could choose the songs we heard in concert and listen to the songs that mean something to you, instead of a set list that has toured the country?

January 23, 2016 7:30 PM Genre: Jazz

That’s the idea behind Your Night… Your Song. This isn’t going to be a concert with an artist whose touring the country playing the same songs night after night. Sandro Dominelli and His Grand Band have set a list of songs for you to choose from that you can find at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ WX9939D or in paper form in the Festival Place Box Office. It’s only open till October 30 (we need to give them time to learn the songs) and the songs getting the most votes will be played. You can share stories and memories about the songs and the show will become about you – the audience. It’s a concert of favorites, but they aren’t our favorites or the band’s favorites... they’re YOUR favorites!

Symphony Paradiso:

The Movie Music of Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota March 6, 2016 2 PM Genre: Classical/Vocal

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly; just saying these words brings images to mind of Clint Eastwood standing in the desert, staring down the camera. And the music… you can practically hear it. That haunting whistle through the wailing trumpet brings images to mind of those great Spaghetti Westerns of the past. It’s scores like these that make movies. Music is this great finisher, that ties films from a series of images into a great story, makes it an emotional, relatable, part of everyday life. Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota are two of the great film musicians and make movies a part of our soul. Ennio Morricone (1928- ) is an Italian composer whose work with Sergio Leone is legendary. Those great “dusters” scores… That’s his work! Quentin Tarantino has used his scores in his films and

is working with Morricone on his latest film. He’s the musician behind “La Cage aux Folles”, “The Untoucables” and “Lolita”. His music is living – it moves and breaths on its own. You don’t hear instruments, you hear the sounds of life in musical form. Nino Rota (1911 – 1979) was a childhood prodigy before turning to film work. A frequent collaborator with Fredrico Fellini, Rota was responsible for the score for “8 ½”, “Romeo and Juliet” and unforgettably, “The Godfather”. His music harkens back to an era of movies that meant something, and have been inspirations for great composers such as Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman. Accompanied by multimedia visuals from each of the films, Emilio De Mercato and a talented group of musicians will guide us though these pieces live on stage.

“A

ll you need is faith, trust… and a little bit of pixie dust”. The timeless tale of the boy who would never grow up is the latest production of The Festival Players for Kids. It’s a story that is all about the wonders of childhood – laughter, imagination, joy and that little bit of mischief we all got into as a kid. Pirates, mermaids, fairies and more make this the perfect tale for children, or children at heart. The Festival Players for Kids is the successful off-shoot of the Festival Players. Seeing a need for high quality children’s theatre, The Festival Players for Kids started with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory almost 10 years ago and has

brought beloved children’s classics to life before our very eyes. This isn’t about turning kids into performers; it’s about using performance to help kids become whatever they want to be. The work begins in the fall for The Festival Players for Kids production team. Kids are auditioned and cast into the roles that fit them. Some have performed with us for several years, and some are somewhat shyly here for the very first time; they come together to make something uniquely special and beautiful. While we’re focused on the product that happens on stage, the friendships that form backstage are just as important.

Did you know… Students who study art are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and 3 times more likely to be awarded for school attendance. Researchers find that sustained learning in music and theater correlates strongly with higher achievement in both math and reading. New brain research shows that not only does music improve skills in math and reading, but it promotes creativity, social development, personality adjustment, and self-worth. (https://www.dosomething.org/ facts/11-facts-about-arts-education)

Of course, while we’re teaching kids to be confident communicators and creative thinkers, we’re also presenting a wonderful tale that can introduce even the youngest audiences to live performance. Performed by kids, for kids, is the motto. All the favorite characters are in this production – Captain Hook, Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily, Wendy, John and Michael, and of course Peter. They’re supported by a wonderful staff of directors, production managers, choreographers, musical directors and theatre technicians, who will help these kids build the magical world of Disney’s Peter Pan Jr.

The Stray Birds Sunday February 14, 2016 7:30 PM Genre: Folk

The Stray Birds have been flying high since the debut of their self-titled album in 2012. Known for their songwriting, instrumental virtuosity and gorgeous three-part harmonies, Maya de Vitry, Oliver Craven, and Charlie Muench bring a unique maturity to the stage well beyond their years. They have performed at prestigious events like the Philadelphia, Kerrville, and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and legendary venues like Nashville’s famous bluegrass club, The Station Inn. Their most cohesive and ambitious album to date, Best Medicine, is scheduled for release later this year.

Ethan Russell: The Best Seat In The HousE March 5, 2016 7:30 PM Genre: Special Event

This is NOT a slideshow! It’s an evening of non-stop stories, music and over 350 photographs. A one man multimedia performance from Grammy nominee Ethan Russell, the only photographer to shoot covers for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. Ethan Russell’s early career coincided with a cultural storm of music, art, change and evolution that reshaped the world and became the collective story of a generation. His roster of subjects also include Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Everly, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, The Moody Blues, Cream, Traffic, Elkie Brooks, Eric Clapton, Linda Ronstadt, John Hiatt, Rickie Lee Jones, Audioslave, Spooky Tooth and Rosanne Cash. A review from Ethan Russell’s 2012 Festival Place Engagement “…..a night of intimate insights and beautiful photography that I had the pleasure to attend. Twenty of his iconic photographs were on display before the show, an impressive collection of his most prized works featuring subjects ranging from The Beatles to Hendrix. Patrons then had the opportunity to ‘peek behind the curtain of the rock ‘n’ roll world,’ treated to a slideshow of both his most well-known and rare photography, paired with great music and even better stories… I was not surprised to find that Festival Place’s seats were filled with members of every generation, from head-bobbing grandpas to nostalgic fangirls like me. We were living proof that an appreciation for good music and great photography transcends the generational divide. Russell recalled something John Lennon said to him the last time they were together: “You’ve got to hang on to your memories they’re all you’ve got.” Here is a man who understands the value of capturing and preserving a slice in time. In recounting the moments behind the photographs, and in showing us the worlds that extended beyond the picture’s frame, Ethan Russell ensured that we too got to relive this incredible era in the history of music from the best seat in the house.”

The Music of The Last Waltz

with The Front Porch Roots Revue April 9, 2016 7:30 PM Genre: Folk

It Started as a Concert. It Became a Celebration. Now it’s a Legend.

That’s the tagline, for one of the most popular and well received music documentaries. The Last Waltz is the legendary movie from 2006 Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese. The concert featured in that film was 40 years ago, in 1976 and featured Canadian/American rock legends The Band. With the stage set with a glorious chandelier, The Band, and a whole

group of guests took to and an amazing concert that will live forever, in what is largely regarded as the greatest musical-documentary ever made. We’ve decided to bring the legendary concert to life! Leading us through the

evening will be our friends The Front Porch Roots Revue. No stranger to the music of The Band, Ron Rault, “Crawdad” Cantera, Gord Matthews and Thom Moon, along with special guests, will bring the film to life on stage.
