director’s notes Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gables, the popular children’s novel written by Canadian author Lucy Maude Montgomery, has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. The story is centered around a young, bright and imaginative orphan girl Anne Shirley who is mistakenly sent to the middleaged brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Marilla and Matthew had intended to adopt a young boy to help on their farm on Prince Edward Island and the arrival of Anne creates immediate chaos and adventure in their small community of Avonlea. The story Anne of Green Gables has inspired films, made-for-television movies, live-action television series as well as this charming musical adaption written by Norman Campbell and Don Harron. To my delight, I had the pleasure of working with Don Harron at the King’s Playhouse in Prince Edward Island. At that time, he was still an active artist and thrilled that Anne of Green Gables the Musical was Canada’s longest running musical. It still is, having been performed on the island since 1965! My own connection to Anne’s story is quite unique. As a child I grew up reading Anne of Green Gables and went on to voraciously read all of Lucy Maude Montgomery’s stories about Prince Edward Island. I was fortunate to play the title role in the musical version of Anne during my school years in Alberta and loved the feistiness and adventurous spirit of Anne’s character so much that I eventually named my own daughter Anne (with an “e” of course). Ten years ago, my husband and I had an
opportunity to move to Prince Edward Island where I ran a theatre and my husband and I owned and operated an inn/restaurant in the same town. The Island worked its magic on both of us and some of our most cherished memories continue to be from our time living in “Anne’s world.” So you see, Prince Edward Island and Anne of Green Gables has been an influential part of my life and it is somehow fortuitous that I should find myself directing the show here at Festival Place. Festival Place too has been a very important part of my history. As a young woman, I had the pleasure of sitting on the initial Board of Directors who were charged with raising enough funds to build this facility. I have seen the initial shovel go into the ground, I have celebrated its opening and since then, I have performed in and directed many a show on this stage. This building is filled with the evidence of all those who have worked, and continue to work tirelessly, to create a space that has become the creative heart and soul of this County. The ability to return to Festival Place (my home town theatre), and to bring Anne of Green Gables, (which holds the spirit of my beloved Prince Edward), to the stage is a thrill. Working with this talented artistic team has made the task enormously fun and satisfying and these actors showcase everything that is wonderful and right about community theatre. Life doesn’t get much better than this. “Gee, I’m glad I’m no one else but me!” Dawn Sadoway
Synopsis Upon arriving in P.E.I, Anne is met at the train station by the elderly Matthew Cuthbert who is surprised to find a girl there instead of a boy. Matthew and his sister Marilla had requested a boy to help them with the farm chores. He decides that he couldn’t very well just leave the girl at the train station. Matthew takes Anne to meet Marilla and on the buggy ride home becomes completely smitten with the red-haired orphan girl. When Anne Shirley arrives at the Cuthbert’s farm, called “Green Gables”, she is a precocious, romantic child desperate to be loved and highly sensitive about her red hair and homely looks. In her own unique headstrong manner, Anne manages to insult the town gossip, Rachel Lynde, in a dispute over her looks; smash her slate over Gilbert Blythe’s head when he calls her “Carrots” on her first day of school; and accidentally dyes her hair green in an effort to turn her red hair black and salvage her wounded pride. Marilla Cuthbert is shocked and beside herself to know how she will ever cope with this sensitive, headstrong child so desperate to fit in. But shy, gentle Matthew is always there to defend Anne and hold her up on a pedestal.
It seems like Anne is destined to cultivate disaster. She becomes “bosom” friends with Diana Barry from across the pond and succeeds in getting Diana drunk by accidentally serving Currant Wine instead of Raspberry Cordial at a tea party. Diana’s mother and Rachel Lynde turn on Marilla for making wine in the first place. Anne moves from one mishap to the next as her wild imagination and far-fetched antics combine to constantly land her in trouble. Anne finds her element in the academic world, ultimately competing neck and neck with Gilbert Blythe who becomes her arch opponent. Anne and Gilbert go on to win the highest academic accolades, constantly vying for honors at every level. Eventually their fierce rivalry turns to a secret affection, which blossoms into love. Marilla tries to prevent Anne from seeing Gilbert because Anne is still quite young and Marilla wants Anne to continue her education. In the end, however, when Matthew dies and forces Marilla into considering selling Green Gables, Gilbert gives Anne his teaching post in nearby Avonlea so she can stay at Green Gables and continue to support Marilla.
