Ali Hassan Thursday, January 19, 2017 7:30 p.m. Genre: Comedy
Toronto, the Amman Stand-Up Comedy Festival in Jordan, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the UK.
Ali Hassan is a stand-up comic and actor as well as the host of Laugh Out Loud on CBC Radio and SiriusXM, on which he wrangles top Canadian comedians for a listenership of over 1 million people.
About the Show As a father of four, Ali Hassan is well versed in dodging difficult questions. Or just making up the answers. But when his kids start to ask about religion in general and Islam in particular, Ali begins to consider his heritage. In this solo show, Ali Hassan (Man Seeking Woman, Odd Squad, CBC Radio’s Laugh Out Loud) delivers a bitingly funny piece of work on flunking out of Sunday school, ingesting forbidden fruits, and becoming a cultural Muslim. The show is a refreshingly hilarious antidote to our increasingly troubling global climate, delivered by this rising star of television, film, radio and stage.
Previously the Lead Comedy Panelist on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, Ali can be seen on television now with recurring roles on Man Seeking Woman (FX), Odd Squad (PBS Kids), Game On (YTV), and the upcoming CTV miniseries Cardinal. Ali has also acted in the films Breakaway, French Immersion and GOON. He brings ten years of experience performing standup comedy internationally. Ali has performed at both the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal and JFL42 in 4

be a supporting band member. The audience loves it because they get a taste of what each person on stage does and at the same time, they get to watch the musicians enjoy each other in a show that isn’t part of their normal touring activity. And – after all, it’s David Bowie songs; what an incredible catalogue to choose from!”
Starman is a (mostly) acoustic evening celebrating the music of David Bowie David Bowie, of course, is one of the most influential artists in the history of modern music. “There are not many modern musicians who haven’t been touched by Bowie in one way or another,” says the show’s producer, Doug Cox. “As soon as the word got out we were doing this show, musicians started getting in touch to see if they could participate – it’s been quite amazing to see the interest!” Cox adds, “These shows are a blast for the musicians involved and the audience. It’s like a modern variety show where each person in the group gets to take a turn stepping up front for a couple of songs and then, stepping back to

Dee Dee Bridgewater Friday, November 18, 2016 7:30 p.m. Genre: Jazz
Three time grammy winner Born in Memphis and raised in Flint, Michigan, Dee Dee Bridgewater moved to New York early in her career and found fast success. She made her phenomenal New York debut in 1970 as the lead vocalist for the band led by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, one of the premier jazz orchestras of the time. These New York years marked an early career in concerts and on recordings with such giants as Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Max Roach and Roland Kirk, and rich experiences with Norman Connors, Stanley Clarke and Frank Foster’s “Loud Minority.” In 1974, she jumped at the chance to act and sing on Broadway where
her voice, beauty and stage presence won her great success and a Tony Award for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz. This began a long line of awards and accolades as well as opportunities to work in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris and in London where she garnered the coveted “Laurence Olivier” Award nomination as “Best Actress” for her tour de force portrayal of jazz legend Billie Holiday in Stephen Stahl’s Lady Day. Performing the lead in equally demanding acting/ singing roles as Sophisticated Ladies, Cosmopolitan Greetings, Black Ballad, Carmen Jazz and the musical Cabaret (the first black actress to star as Sally Bowles), she secured her reputation as a consummate entertainer.

The Klezmatics
30th Anniversary Concert Saturday, February 25, 2017 7:30 p.m. Genre: World
Since their emergence more than 25 years ago, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a “Jewish roots band,” the Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form. They have performed in more than 20 countries and released 10 albums to date—most recently the twoCD Live at Town Hall, recorded in their home base of New York and released in celebration of the band’s silver anniversary. On their Grammywinning 2006 album Wonder Wheel, the Klezmatics set a dozen previously unsung Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, widening their stylistic base by largely diverging from klezmer. They have also recently served as the subject of a feature-length documentary film, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground.
Itzhak Perlman, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and Israeli vocal icon Chava Alberstein, plus many other prominent artists working within multiple genres. Today, with three original members— Lorin Sklamberg (lead vocals, accordion, guitar, piano), Frank London (trumpet, keyboards, vocals) and Paul Morrissett (bass, tsimbl, vocals)—still on board, alongside longtime members Matt Darriau (kaval, clarinet, saxophone, vocals) and Lisa Gutkin (violin, vocals), the Klezmatics are without a doubt the most successful proponents of klezmer music in the world. The Klezmatics’ music is rooted in but is not a strictly traditional variety of the klezmer genre. Rather it is a comfortable hybrid that appeals equally to those with no previous exposure to the music and those already familiar with it. “Klezmer,” says London, “is the unique sound of East European Jewishness. It has the power to evoke a feeling of other-worldliness, of being there and then, of nostalgia for a time and place that we never knew.”
During their quarter-century existence the Klezmatics have collaborated with such brilliant artists as violinist
10
A quarter-century after their formation, the Klezmatics remain committed to their music and to the close relationship they share with their fans. “In 1986,” says Sklamberg, “I never imagined that preserving, disseminating and helping to redefine Yiddish music would become my life’s
work. “I certainly don’t think we sound like anyone else.” Indeed, they don’t. Never have and— should the Klezmatics (hopefully) last another 25 years—it’s a safe guess that no one else ever will!
