director’s notes I am overjoyed to be returning to direct for Festival Players for Kids. As I reflect upon the process, I am amazed with the talent I have before me. Everyone, from the cast, crew, and production members have worked so incredibly hard to present this wonderful show. It is truly an honour to be working alongside such a stellar theatre community. I am so pleased to present to you James and the Giant Peach with Festival Players for Kids. This is a tale of friendship, perseverance, and the determination to create your own story. Roald Dahl has a way of taking the powerful moral of a story and wrapping it up in quirky characters and unlikely plot turns that keep you hanging on the edge of your seat, while secretly reminding you of what a simple lesson can truly mean. This cast has been such a privilege to direct. Each and every one of them has brought so many ideas into rehearsal. Our rehearsal process focused a great deal on moments. On finding the small details of everyday that connect us as friends and that lead us on our incredible journeys. These kids have truly brought these characters to life and have made the story that Roald Dahl wrote over 50 years ago seem relevant and alive. I hope all these kids can see this process as the beginnings of building their own dreams. I hope you all enjoy the show, and are able to be brought back to the time of being a child seeking adventure. I believe we all can be reminded of the lesson of this story; that we have the power to create our realities. Synopsis Four-year-old James Henry Trotter lives with his loving parents in a beautiful cottage by the sea in the south of England, until his parents are killed by an escaped rhinoceros during a shopping trip in London. As a result, James is forced to live with his two cruel aunts, Spiker and Sponge, in a run-down house on a high, desolate hill near the White Cliffs of Dover. For four years, James is treated as a drudge, forced to do hard labor, beaten for hardly any reason, improperly fed, and forced to sleep on bare floorboards in the attic. One summer afternoon, after a particularly upsetting altercation with his aunts, James stumbles across a mysterious stranger, who gives him magic green “crocodile tongues” which, when drunk with water, will bring him happiness and great adventures. On the way to the house, James spills the crocodile tongues onto a bar-

ren peach tree, which then produces a single peach that quickly grows to nearly the size of a house. The next day, the aunts sell tickets to neighbors and tourists to see the giant peach while James watches from the window of his room in which he is locked up, to prevent him from getting in the way of his aunts’ business. When night comes, the aunts release James and send him to collect rubbish discarded by the crowd. James goes to take a closer look at the giant peach, but he discovers a tunnel, which leads to a secret room inside the peach’s seed, inhabited by a rag-tag band of human-sized, talking invertebrates (an old green grasshopper, centipede, earthworm, spider, ladybug, and a silkworm), also transformed by the magic of the crocodile tongues given him earlier. These bugs then become James’ companions in his adventure, and the companionship is prompted by a common hatred of the aunts.. Everyone inside the peach feels it rolling over the aunts and bursts out cheering. It rolls through villages, houses, and a famous chocolate factory before falling off the cliffs of Dover into the sea. James and the bugs emerge to find themselves floating in the sea but manage to sustain themselves on the delicious flesh of the peach. Hours later, near the Azores, the peach is surrounded by sharks. Using the Earthworm as bait, James and the others of the peach lure five hundred seagulls to the peach from the nearby islands, which they tie to the broken stem as a source of flight.

Now airborne, the peach crosses the Atlantic Ocean. Thereafter, James and the bugs approach New York City; whereupon the military, police, fire department, and rescue services are all called, and people flee to air raid shelters and subway stations, believing the city is about to be destroyed. A huge passenger jet flies past the giant peach and severs the silken strings connecting the seagulls to the peach, which is then impaled upon the tip of the Empire State Building. The peo-

ple on the 86th floor at first believe the inhabitants of the giant peach to be monsters or extraterrestrials; but when James appears and explains his story, the people hail James and his friends as heroes. The remains of the giant peach are brought down to the streets, where it is consumed by the town’s children, and its seed is established as a mansion in Central Park, where James lives, while his friends establish careers in the human world. In conclusion, James is said to have written the preceding story.

cast bios Angelina Georgiopoulos (Ladies Garden Guild/Ensemble) Angelina is excited to be a part of her first ever show at Festival Place. She is currently attending her second year at Victoria School of the Arts, after taking numerous years of dance, voice/piano and drama lessons. Angelina would like to thank everyone for their support and hopes you all enjoy the show!

Brooklyn Widynowski (Narrator) This is Brooklyn’s second show with Festival Place. She is a grade 9 student at Archbishop Jordan High School. Brooklyn has loved performing in Charlotte’s Web, Willy Wonka, Alice in Wonderland and Seussical. She appreciates working with this talented cast and doing what she loves with a group of friends. Brooklyn hopes you enjoy the show as much as she enjoys being in it.

Callie Bizuk (Ida Walters/Ensemble/Understudy Gloworm) Callie is thrilled to join the cast of James and the Giant Peach and thanks Mhairi for the opportunity. She is nine years old and a Grade 4 student at EPKK school here in Sherwood Park. You may have previously spotted Callie at Festival Place in Peter Pan Jr. or Charlotte’s Web or on YouTube as a regular guest on the show Stump Kitchen. When not on the stage you can usually find her at the rink with her ringette team, the Sherwood Park Ringmasters!

Carson Griffiths (Grasshopper) Carson is thrilled to be back on the Festival Place stage with The Festival Players. Previous roles include: Ensemble in Mary Poppins; John in Peter Pan; Ensemble in Anne of Green Gables; Lurvy in Charlotte’s Web; Ensemble in Fiddler on The Roof, (All Festival Place); Lead Background in #ROXY (Movie); and Lumiere in Beauty and The Beast; Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (Clover Bar Junior High). This has been such a fun cast to work with and has been amazing seeing this whole show go from nothing to what you are about to see. Enjoy the show!!

Cooper Frank (Billy Bobby Cop/Reporter/Ensemble) Cooper loves performing! He is in grade 4 and has been on stage since he was three years old. His past performances include Charlotte’s Web, Peter Pan Jr., Willy Wonka Jr, Anne of Green Gables, Wizard of Oz and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Outside of school Cooper’s loves playing hockey! When he is not on the ice with his team you can find him at the outdoor rink playing with his friends! He also loves to sing and has been a part of the Elk Island Honor Choir for the past two years. He would like to thank his cast, crew and directors for the amazing experience and opportunity! cast bios cont. Cooper Walsh (Bobby Bobby Cop/Buzz/Reporter/Understudy James) Cooper is happy to be in his second production at Festival Place after appearing in Charlotte’s Web as the Gander. Cooper is in grade six at Aurora Academic and is twelve years old. Cooper works hard at his voice lessons and has won several scholarships for voice and double bass. Cooper has switched to the electric bass and is the bassist and lead singer for the punk/rock band Homemade Psycho. Cooper enjoys reading and playing badminton in his spare time. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Cora Hardy (Crowd Member / Ensemble) Cora is thrilled to be back at Festival Place for her second show! She played in the ensemble of last year’s production of Charlotte‘s Web . She is excited to be part of this fantastic cast! Cora would like to thank for family and friends for supporting her in all her creative adventures, including sewing, singing, playing piano and theatre! She wishes everyone in James and the Giant Peach a fabulous run!

Erik Orthner (Silkworm) While this is Erik Orthner’s first role in a real performance, he has always loved role play. Unlike many of his extended family, he looks forward to the annual family Christmas play and enthusiastically takes on any role. In 2017, he performed the role of Prince Eric in his theatre class’s performance of The Little Mermaid. He recently told his grandparents that when he grows up he wants to be an actor, and he would like to be called Mr. Erik Orthner.

Evie Marsten (Silkworm) Evie is thrilled to be returning to Festival Place, this time as a Silkworm! 7 year old Evie has also been in several performances at the Foote Theatre School, takes voice and piano lessons, as well as ballet and jazz classes. Evie loves being on stage! She is SO excited to be cast in James and The Giant Peach and has made many great friends. She thanks her directors for this amazing opportunity and thanks her cast mates for their friendship. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Filip Fufezan (Centipede) Filip is grateful to start his first Festival Place show with 100 legs (it’s 100, not 42…), as The Centipede. He’s honoured to be such a talented cast. He is a Grade 10 Student at Bev Facey High school. His previous credits include The Beast, from Beauty and the Beast, Donkey, from Shrek, the Musical, and Legally Blonde, The Musical performed at Clover Bar Junior High School- he owes a lot of his growth and passion to there.

Georgia Cooney (Doreen Driggles / Hollywood Agent / Understudy Aunt Sponge / Ensemble) Georgia is a grade ten student at Lillian Osborne High School. Her previous theatre experiences include the 2014 youth cast in A Christmas Carol at the Citadel Theatre, lead and supporting roles in school musicals, ensemble in Anne of Green Gables at Festival Place in 2016 and as Charlotte in Festival Place’s production of Charlotte’s Web in 2017. She truly has a “musical theatre” song in her heart and can’t wait for you to enjoy the show!

Juliana Duran (Spider) This is Juliana’s fourth show with Festival Players and she is very excited to have the opportunity to be in this production of James and the Giant Peach. Juliana has been in Honk Jr., Peter Pan Jr., Charlotte’s Web, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, and is also taking part in her high school production of The Addams Family opening in March. Thank you to Festival Place, and the hardworking directors and staff of James and the Giant Peach for the opportunity to be in this wonderful play. Enjoy the show!

Kate Boswell (Second Officer/Ladies Garden Guild/Ensemble) Kate is so excited to be performing again at Festival Place. Her theatrical debut last year as “Fern” in Charlotte’s Web was the beginning of a life long love of theatre both on stage and in the audience! Kate hopes to be in many, many more productions and can’t wait for that first curtain to rise on James and the Giant Peach! Break a leg.

Kerri Stratton (Mother/Ensemble/Understudy Aunt Spiker) Kerri is very happy to be performing for the second time in Festival Players for kids. She performed in Charlottes Web The Musical last year as Edith Zukerman. Kerri has been acting in many plays in theatre camps and the Fringe since the past eight years. She is very excited for you to come and enjoy James and the Giant Peach.

Lily Gervais (Hollywood Agent/Ensemble) Lily is very excited to be part of James and the Giant Peach this year. She loves music and acting and everything about theatre. She discovered her love for the stage when she was part of Charlotte’s Web last year at Festival Place. This year you can also see her as Zazu in her school’s production of The Lion King Jr. In her spare time, you can find her in her room singing, dancing, or drawing while listening to Broadway soundtracks. She hopes you enjoy the show!

cast bios cont. Lindsay Patterson (Ridgley Rapscallion/Hollywood Agent/Ensemble) Lindsay is excited to join the cast of James and the Giant Peach in her second theatre production with Festival Place. Lindsay’s previous experience includes playing the Goose and ensemble in Charlotte’s Web, musical theatre and Elk Island Regional Honor Choir. Lindsay is made for stage and has enjoyed drama from a young age. She is eager to share the wonderful tale of James and the Giant Peach with you!

Madeliene (Maddie) Lupien (Hollywood Agent/Ensemble) Maddie plays a Hollywood agent and is in the ensemble. Maddie is 12 and in grade seven. When she was only five, she started acting at the Northern Light Theatre summer camp which sparked her love of theatre, acting and singing. Maddie also loves to draw, do arts and crafts, and plays recreational soccer for TRSA. She would like to thank her parents and family for supporting her throughout this amazing experience. Whether she made it in or not, she knew they would always be there for her no matter what.

Maren Richardson (Aunt Spiker) Maren (Aunt Spiker) is excited to be a part of this great cast to share this funny story with the audience. Some of her recent school & community theatre credits include Fiddler on the Roof (Dancer, Understudy of Chava), Pinocchio Jr. (Blue Fairy), That’s Not How I Remember It (Mom), Charlotte’s Web (Martha), and Anne of Green Gables (Josie Pye). Maren is in Grade 10 at Bev Facey is looking forward to the school’s upcoming production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Outside of school, Maren spends her time dancing, singing, playing piano and believes she has the best part-time job as a singing Disney princess. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Matteo Rota (Little Old Man/Reporter/Vagrant) This is Matteo’s third stint with the Festival Place Theatre, having had the privilege to be a part its productions of Charlotte’s Web and Fiddler On The Roof. His previous experience includes extra work in video and short film, as well as with the NextFest Edmonton’s Emerging Artists Festival. He is in the 12th grade at Victoria Composite High School, and continues with sessional acting instruction at the Citadel Theatre. Matteo truly looks forward to being part of this amazing show!

Noah Penny (Chris Cyremouth/Reporter/ Ensemble) Noah is super excited to be part of Festival Place’s production of James and the Giant Peach. This is Noah’s second play with Festival Place. Noah is currently in the fifth grade. In addition to singing and acting, he enjoys playing with his younger brother and gaming. Noah would like to thank his parents for all their support and chauffeuring.

Piper Le (Ladies Garden Guild / Ensemble) Piper is very proud to be part of her first ever production with the Festival Players for Kids. She is also a member of KidLibs Theatre and has performed at both the Edmonton International Fringe Festival and the Calgary Fringe Festival. In addition to theatre, she is an avid Harry Potter fan and also enjoys horse riding.

Quinn Hocker (Father/Captain/Reporter/ Ensemble/Understudy Earthworm) Quinn is thrilled to return to the Festival Place stage to be part of James and the Giant Peach. Quinn has previously performed with the Festival Players for Kids in the junior productions of Seussical, Cinderella, Peter Pan and Charlotte’s Web. Quinn is in ninth grade where his favourite subjects include Drama and Film Production. He hopes that you enjoy the show!

Sam Michaelchuk (Earthworm) Sam is 12 years old and in grade seven, he loves acting, music, video games and playing hockey. Since 2013, Sam has enjoyed theatre and improv classes at the Foote Theatre school. In February 2017, Sam performed at Festival Place in Charlotte’s Web and in the fall of 2017, was in the Fringe theatre production of Jack & the Beanstalk. Sam is so excited to be performing in James and the Giant Peach!

Sarah Hart (Aunt Sponge) Sarah Hart is very excited to be in her first Festival Place show! Sarah is honoured to be playing the role of Aunt Sponge. She has been in multiple musicals through school, her most recent role was the Witch and Jack in Into the Woods Jr. Sarah is currently in Grade 10 and attending Bev Facey High School here in Sherwood Park. She hopes you sit back and enjoy this wonderful production of James and the Giant Peach Jr.!

Selah Mrochuk (Bistsy Botana/Ensemble) Selah is very excited to be in James and the Giant Peach. This will be her second production with Festival Place, having played Lamb in Charlotte’s Web last year. Her other experiences include many church plays, choirs, and a small walk on role in The Nutcracker at the Jubilee Auditorium. She is 12 years old, and loves to sing, act, play the piano, and just generally being on stage.

cast bios cont. Sofia Berry (Ladies Garden Guild / Ensemble) Sofia enjoys many activities, such as reading, sports, art, music, and dancing. Her favorite book series is Harry Potter. Sofia has been performing since she was three years old. She is thrilled that this is her first acting role with Festival Place Children’s Theater. Sofia is studying voice and piano at Crescendo Music Studio. Also, Sofia is in grade four at École Père Kenneth Kearns School. She has four people in her family. And she is CRAZY for animals!

Sophie Berube (Lady Bug (Bug Group)) Sophie Bérubé is a grade 6 student at École Claudette et Dénis Tardif here in Sherwood park and she is so excited to be performing at Festival Place for the first time. Sophies first professional theater experience was in 2015 when she was cast in the production of Evangeline at the Citadel Theater in Edmonton. She is also a student at the Citadel Theater’s Foote theater School.

Taeya Symon (First Officer /Ladies Garden Guild / Ensemble) Taeya is thrilled to be part of James and the Giant Peach as this is her first major performance. She is 10 years old, in Grade 5 and has been acting since she was 7. She began playing piano at 3 years old and is now in the Royal Conservatory Grade 3. Her favourite play is Anne of Green Gables. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Talitha Mrochuk (Ladies Garden Guild / Ensemble) Talitha Mrochuk (Ladies Garden Guild/Ensemble) is thrilled to be part of James and the Giant Peach. This is her first experience in a Festival Place production, but has performed in many church plays and choirs. She had a lot of fun rehearsing and making new friends. She is 10 years old and enjoys singing, dancing, and playing the piano.

Victoria Burman (Gloworm) Victoria has previously performed with Festival Players for Kids in Charlotte’s Web and is proud to be joining the cast of James and the Giant Peach. She has previously performed at various events including the Habitat for Humanity Opening Ceremony, St. Albert’s Chamber of Commerce Awards, and the St Albert’s Snowflake Festival. Victoria is currently in the ninth grade. She is grateful for the opportunity to share her love of music and hopes you enjoy the show.

Violet Penney (Silkworm / Violet Funkschmeller) Violet is excited for her 2nd production at Festival Place! She thoroughly enjoyed her role last year as a baby spider in Charlotte’s Web. Violet is seven years old and in grade two at Aurora Academic. She has won several awards and scholarships for voice in the Edmonton area, plays piano and is a dancer at Edmonton School of Ballet. Violet loves to read, and spends many hours per week playing tennis. Violet is looking forward to sharing her boundless energy with you!

Will Brisbin (James) Will is thrilled to be returning to the Festival Place stage and joining the wonderful cast of James and the Giant Peach. He has previously appeared in Oliver (Festival Place); Anne of Green Gables (Festival Place); Charlotte’s Web (Festival Place); Big Fish (Grant MacEwan University); Evangeline (Citadel Theatre) and A Christmas Carol (Citadel Theatre). production bios Allene Hodgins (Production Manager/Stage Manager) Allene is thrilled to be in her 20th production at Festival Place. Previous productions have included White Christmas, Oliver, Cat’s, Mary Poppins, Anne of Green Gables and most recently Fiddler On The Roof. It is a true passion of Allene’s to be working with such amazing and talented people. Allene can’t thank production team enough for all their hard work, as well as the group of talented actors who make a stage manager’s job easier. We all hope you enjoy this kid’s production of James and the Giant Peach.

Chelsey Ironside (Choreographer) Chelsey has an extensive background in dance and performing arts that has led her across the country as a dancer, choreographer, adjudicator, and instructor. An award-winning choreographer, Chelsey ‘s unique style and innovative performances have been recognized throughout Canada. She continues to train, teach, and judge across North America spreading her love of dance to the next generation of young artists. She is honoured to be working with such a wonderful production team, cast and crew.

production bios Cody Boyd (Lighting Designer) Cody is thrilled to be involved with this year’s Festival Players for Kids production of Charlotte’s Web doing the lighting design. Cody has been involved in numerous productions over the past several years including the most recent Fiddler on the Roof.

James Odenbach (House Technician) James trained at MacEwan in the Theatre Production program. Over the past 10 years he has designed lighting for productions including Crazy for You, Joseph, Oliver, Cats, West Side Story, Mary Poppins, Anne of Green Gables, and this Christmas’ Fiddler on the Roof. James also has worked on many other projects such as the Strathcona County Digital LED Tree. Enjoy the show!

Madison Hucal (Assistant Stage Manager) Madison is thrilled to be involved in her 3rd children’s show and her 7th production here at Festival Place. She has been involved in several productions in the past including CATS, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan Jr, Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte’s Web and most recently Fiddler on the Roof. She likes to experience many aspects of the theatre world including property management and acting. Madison is enthralled by the theatre constantly, and James and the Giant Peach will be no exception, she hopes you are as captivated by these wonderfully talented young actors as she is!

Matt Graham (Music Director) Matt is thrilled to be back for his second show with Festival Place. A freelance Musical Director, Composer and Musician, Matt is very active in the Edmonton and Area musical theatre scene! Recent credits include Heathers (Scona Alumni Theatre Co), Rent (Two One Way) Madagascar (St Albert Children’s Theatre) and Measures (Citadel Young Musical Company). Melissa Penney (Wardrobe Designer) Melissa is so happy to be returning for her second year as costume designer. I enjoyed every minute of sewing every thread into the costumes for Charlotte’s Web, and I’m even more excited about James and the Giant peach! When I’m not scouring Value Village and sitting behind my sewing machine I am behind the lens trying to capture special moments through my photography business. My husband is wonderfully supportive of the late night noise of sewing machines and 2 out of 3 of my amazing kids are performing in this show. Enjoy the show!

Mhairi Berg (Director) Mhairi Berg has been working in Edmonton as a performer and arts educator for over a decade. After completing the Theatre Arts program at Grant MacEwan University, she received her MA in Musical Theatre from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. After directing “Charlotte’s Web” last year, Mhairi is excited to return to Festival Place with this show! Mhairi is a choreographer, director, and vocal coach, teaching across Edmonton and at the Citadel Theatre’s Foote Theatre School. She is the proud director of Grindstone Theatre’s improvised musical “The 11 O’Clock Number”. Last summer, Mhairi was seen teaching at Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek at Red Deer College, where she will be returning again to teach this summer. Mhairi would like to dedicate this show to her grade 4 teacher, Mr. Morris, who first introduced her to Roald Dahl and inspired her to pursue her dreams of being a performer.

Nick Hucal (Set Designer/Builder) Nick Hucal is pleased to working on his second production with Festival Place. Nick broke into the theatre world with the production of Fiddler on the Roof, although he has lended a helping hand in many previous productions including Charlotte’s Web and Anne of Green Gables with Festival Players. Nick is a man of many talents including carpentry, photography, music and computer technologies. He loves devoting his time to developing new talents and he is extremely excited to be taking part designing this set for James and the Giant Peach.

Robbie Tkachyk (Technical Director) A graduate of the Grant MacEwan Theatre Production program, this is Robbie’s 20th year with Festival Place. Having worked on productions of My Fair Lady, The Wizard of Oz, Oliver, West Side Story, Mary Poppins and last year’s Anne of Green Gables, he is excited to be involved once again in this year’s production of James and the Giant Peach.

Ron Smith (House Technician) Ron Smith has been an audio engineer for 23 years specializing in concert sound. As part of his work at Festival Place he was thrust into the world of the theatre where he has witnessed the hard work and dedication of amateurs who perform for the LOVE of their craft. He has worked on such shows as Cats, West Side Story, Mary Poppins, Anne of Green Gables, and this Christmas’ Fiddler on the Roof. Enjoy the show!
