Jesse Eisenberg

To say Jesse Eisenberg is a likely leading man is to say the same thing about your awkward high school self, the one who hasn’t quite figured out the proper nuances of even the most basic social situations. Which is to say it isn’t likely at all, but there’s something to the way Eisenberg can capture that certain, pervasive normalcy in a screen performance and give it an edge of neuroses—Watching him perform often carries feeling of watching wallflower whose been shoved into the spotlight, and forced to try and impress. None of the above is meant as criticism at all. The 30-year-old actor’s proven his take on average-guy can be a versatile thing to watch. He’s capable in situations both comic and dramatic, as equipped to ground a horror-comedy like Zombieland as he is a more driven drama, adept at playing the sort of guy who’s either a little too smart, awkward or eager for his own good. His best work is anchored in that sensibility: much of the resonance of The Squid and the Whale (2005), for one—Noah Baumbach’s painful account of a family in an emotional tailspin—hinges on Eisenberg’s 16-year-old Walt, a kid in the throes of adolescence and the shadow of a flawed father he nonetheless idolizes. Burdened by his father’s missteps, and further fuelled by being in the already vulnerable period of adolescence, and trying to figure out the kind of man he is, Eisenberg vividly captures that sense of trying to go through the motions of growing up in the shadow of a damaged role model.

Why the mini-essay on Eisenberg? Because he’s anchoring a pair of features playing at Metro over the next two months. The first, The Double, finds him coming into conflict with, well, himself; based on Dostoyevsky’s enduring novella, Eisenberg’s Simon encounters a man who looks identical to him, and quickly starts to suspect the doppelgänger’s trying to take over his life. After premiering at TIFF last September, it’s been swept up in acclaim, with a lot of that praise being heaped upon Eisenberg’s nuanced double performance (which parallels another 2013 release, Enemy, that recently screened here at Metro, was directed by Canadian Denis Villeneuve, and put Jake Gyllenhaal in the double role, playing a perpetually flustered university professor who discovers another version of himself, working as a bit-part actor in the same city). The second film, Night Moves, plants Eisenberg alongside

Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard, as a trio of activists planning to blow up a dam. It’s a film by Kelly Reichardt, whose recent previous offerings have been among the most acclaimed American indie releases of the past few years—take her last film, Meek’s Cutoff: Reichardt’s take on a western proved a sharp study in contemplative urgency, following a band of settlers who find themselves lost in an American desert in 1845. (Think Oregon Trail, but with really high stakes.) So, he’s seen mainstream success without sacrificing deeper, more nuanced roles: as an actor, Eisenberg seems to have found the balance between of wide popcorn successes—he’s just been cast as Lex Luthor in the next Superman—without losing the ability to shoulder a more nuanced, considered script like either of these two.

- David Reis

Selected filmography: The Hunting Party (2007) Holy Rollers (2010): nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, it casts Eisenberg as Sam, a young, poor Orthodox man studying to become a rabbi, only to find himself diverging from that path to sell drugs, after unwittingly being used as mule. Based on a true story. The Social Network (2010): the big hit. Eisenberg is Mark Zuckerberg, creating Facebook while at Harvard. Some of the film’s facts have been disputed, but as a work of cinema, it’s a sleek, slick and scathing look at the creation of social media’s anchoring program.

Metro’s annual summer screening of the comedic masterpiece is here! We invite you to hang with “The Dude” and indulge in the Big Lebowski’s Big Drink Specials. “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), mistaken for a different millionaire Lebowski by hired thugs, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies Walter and Donny to help get it. As this case of mistaken identity is complicated by extortion, double- crosses, deception, embezzlement, sex, pot, and gallons of White Russians, it seems that everyone from porn tycoons to nihilists want something from the Dude. Yet, even when things look their worst “the Dude abides. I don’t know about you, but we still take comfort in that.” 18+.

obvious Child

For aspiring comedian Donna Stern (Jenny Slate), everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her hysterical and relatable brand of humour. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna winds up unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand, she is forced to face the uncomfortable realities of independent womanhood for the first time. Donna’s drunken hookup – and epic lapse in prophylactic judgment – turns out to be the beginning of a hilarious and totally unplanned journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Obvious Child is a winning discovery, packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant human honesty.

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead UK/ USA 1990, 117 min, Digital, Dir: Tom Stoppard 11 @ 7PM

R&G has often been described as a riff on Hamlet and Waiting for Godot. Well, I’ll take Gary Oldman and Tim Roth over just about any Hamlet I’ve ever seen – and I`ve seen some wonderful Hamlets. Tom Stoppard stands on the shoulders of two giant writers, then leaps into a midair roll and nails the landing with Richard Dreyfuss doing jazz hands. The film version adds new layers of wit and humour, infusing each scene with equal parts wonder and confusion. I hope you’ll love it as much as I do. - David Cheoros

The Dark Side of oz

Synchronization of the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon with the visual portion of the 1939 film The Wizard of oz, 102 min, Digital. 13 @ 9:30PM

Is it coincidence, was it planned, or is it, as some followers of Carl Jung would have us believe, some form of collective unconscious synchronicity? You’ve heard about it – now here is your chance to view it on the big screen – The Dark Side of Oz. The pairing of the classic film with the classic album produces moments where the film and music appear to correspond in cosmic synch with each other. The “buzz” behind this event first appeared in the mid-nineties and it has since turned into this modest, cultural phenomenon – possibly the first video “Mash-up”. It all begins with the MGM lions roar.

Spotlight on Akira Kurosawa & Toshiro Mifune/// Akira Kurosawa, the master director, and Toshiro Mifune, the master actor: each an icon of cinematic history in his own right, but as a team, they are as legendary as the stories and characters they depicted in their astounding 16 film collaborations. Over the course of their joint careers, the duo translated Japanese story-telling traditions into epic films of intense emotional and intellectual power. These three classic samurai tales represent the zenith of this collaborative relationship and were integral in developing the “wandering warrior” archetype, which has influenced filmmakers from Clint Eastwood to George Lucas.

Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai)

Through an ingenious use of camera and flashbacks, Akira Kurosawa reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the same story: the murder of a man and the rape of his wife. Starring Toshiro Mifune in a truly commanding performance, Rashomon revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema to the world.

Japan 1954, 207 min, Digital, Dir: Akira Kurosawa, Japanese w/ subtitles 14, Sep 1 @ 7PM, 24 @ 3PM

This three-hour ride from Kurosawa - featuring legendary actors Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura - seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action, into a rich, evocative, and unforgettable tale of courage and hope.

Mood Indigo (L’écume des jours) France/ Belgium 2013, 131 min, Digital, Dir: Michel Gondry, French w/ subtitles 15, 21 @ 6:30PM, 16 @ 9:30PM, 19 @ 9:15PM

To save her, Colin discovers the only cure is to surround her with a never-ending supply of fresh flowers.

fringe/// McCrackin 2: The Whackining Throne of Blood (Kumonosu-jô) Japan 1957, 110 min, Digital, Dir: Akira Kurosawa, Japanese w/ subtitles 20, 27 @ 7PM, 31 @ 1PM

Canada 2014, Live Performance, 65 min, Dir: Accidental Humour 16, 23 @ 7:30PM, 17 @ 3PM, 21, 22 @ 9:30PM

A vivid, visceral Macbeth adaptation, Throne of Blood, sets Shakespeare’s definitive tale of ambition and duplicity in a ghostly, fogenshrouded landscape in feudal Japan. As a hardened warrior who rises savagely to power, Toshiro Mifune gives a remarkable, animalistic performance, as does Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife. Throne of Blood fuses classical Western tragedy with formal elements taken from Noh theatre to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Jim McCrackin is a Hit-man seeking redemption. But first he must tango with a clandestine organization, execute an impossible heist, and most importantly find his missing son. All without having a Whack Attack! From the creators of Cowboy: A Cowboy Story, Son of a Dwarf!, and Happy Whackin’ Jim McCrackin comes the next installment from Accidental Humour Co. McCrackin 2: The Whackining brings stage and film together in a comedic homage to the action genre. For info visit: www.accidentalhumour.com. For pre-sale :tickets.fringetheatre.ca. One of Linklater’s finest, featuring breakout performances by Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, and Parker Posey among many others. 18+ Friday only

USA 1984, 82 min, Digital, Dir: Rob Reiner 17, 28 @ 9:30PM, 22 @ 11:30PM

Even if it wasn’t technically the first one, This is Spinal Tap is still pretty much the granddaddy of all mockumentaries. This legendary satire focusing on the American comeback tour of the legendary, but now aging, rock group (dubbed “one of England’s loudest bands”) still manages to be hilarious and feel fresh 30 years later. The comedic and musical trio of Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, and Christopher Guest (who all star and wrote the script) have amazing chemistry together.... Original, brutally funny and masterfully made, Spinal Tap will forever remain the most quintessential Rock N’ Roll comedy ever made. (R.J. LaForce). 18+ Friday only.

Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable elements of Belarus USA/ UK/ Belarus 2013, 76 min, Digital, Dir: Madeline Sackler 18 @ 7PM, 24 @ 1PM

Creating provocative theatre carries great personal risks: emotional, financial, and artistic. For the members of the Belarus Free Theatre, there are additional risks: censorship, imprisonment, and worse. Dangerous Acts goes behind the scenes with the acclaimed troupe of imaginative and subversive performers who, in a desolate country choked by censorship and repression, defy Europe’s last remaining dictatorship. When authorities forbid critical examinations of important topics, the Free Theatre responds by injecting these taboos into performances that are staged in underground. And yet, because of the power of their message, they receive critical acclaim overseas.

CuLT CINEMA/// A monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff Noel.

If…. UK 1968, 111 min, Digital, Dir: Lindsay Anderson 26 @ 9:30PM

If…. is a daringly anarchic vision of British society, set in a boarding school in late-sixties England. Before Kubrick made his mischief iconic in A Clockwork Orange, Malcolm McDowell made a hell of an impression as the insouciant Mick Travis, w ho, along with his school chums, trumps authority at every turn, finally emerging as a violent saviour in the vicious games of oneupmanship played by both students and masters. Mixing colour and black and white as audaciously as it mixes fantasy and reality, If…. remains one of cinema’s most unforgettable rebel yells.

Dwight Evans (Macon Blair) is a mysterious drifter whose quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Winner of the International Federation of Film Critics prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Crime Watch is delighted to bring this taut indie thriller to Metro.

Night Moves follows three passionate environmentalists whose homegrown plot to blow up a controversial dam unravels into a journey of doubt, paranoia, and unintended consequences. Set against the ravishing, but threatened natural beauty of Oregon, the film follows step-by- relentless-step as quiet organic farmer Josh (Jesse Eisenberg), high society drop out Dena (Dakota Fanning), and adrenaline-driven ex-Marine Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard) prepare, carry out, and ultimately experience the shocking fallout of what they hoped would be an attention- grabbing act of sabotage. Feeling they have been pushed to the limit by disregard for the local ecosystem, the trio’s own personal limits are about to be tested. As the tension mounts, provocative moral questions are posed about the underside of idealism and the modern collision of values and violence.

Drama and reality combine in a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon Nick Cave. With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit. Encores: 19, 21, 23 @ 7PM, 20, 22, 24 @ 9:30PM

The Room USA 2003, 99 min, Digital, Dir: Tommy Wiseau 5 @ 11:30PM

The film widely considered to be the “Citizen Kane of bad movies” is back! Tommy Wiseau and his popular masterpiece are only at Metro every few months, so be sure to catch it when it’s here. You’re my favourite customer. Thanks a lot! Bye. Audience participation is encouraged. Please respect the theatre and fellow patrons, and refrain from using profane language.

Palo Alto USA 2013, 100 min, Digital, Dir: Gia Coppola 4, 6 @ 9:15PM, 7, 10 @ 9:30PM

Shy, sensitive April (Emma Roberts) is the class virgin, torn between an illicit flirtation with her soccer coach Mr. B (James Franco) and an unrequited crush on sweet stoner Teddy. Emily, meanwhile, offers sexual favors to every boy who crosses her path — including both Teddy and his best friend Fred, a live wire without filters or boundaries. An unflinching portrait of adolescent lust, boredom, and self-destruction, Palo Alto is a teen movie for the ages — an astonishing debut feature from writer-director Gia Coppola, based on the book Palo Alto: Stories by James Franco.

Land Ho! Iceland/ USA 2014, 95 min, Digital, Dirs: Aaron Katz, Martha Stephens 5, 11 7PM, 6 @ 4PM, 7 @ 2PM, 8 @ 9:30PM

A pair of 60-something ex-brothers-in-law sets off on a road trip through Iceland, hoping to reclaim their youth. Their picaresque adventures, from trendy Reykjavík to rugged outback, are a throwback to classic bawdy road comedies as well as a candid exploration of aging, loneliness, and friendship.

staff pics/// Sagrada The Mystery of Creation Switzerland 2012, 89 min, Digital, Dir: Stefan Haupt, French, Spanish & English w/ subtitles 5 @ 9:15PM, 6 @ 7PM, 7, 13 @ 4PM, 9 @ 9:30PM

One of the most iconic structures ever built, Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia is a unique and fascinating architectural project conceived by controversial genius Antoni Gaudi in the late 19th century. More than 125 years after construction began and 88 years after Gaudi’s death, the basilica still remains unfinished. Every year, the proliferating building site attracts some 3 million visitors from the 4 corners of the globe, because the mysterious process of creation and of something in the making seems to be almost within reach and physically tangible. Sagrada: The Mystery of Creation celebrates Gaudi’s vision and the continuing work of architects as they strive to complete the colossal project while delving into the process of artistic creation in a historical context.

Front of House Representative, Natalia Knowlton will be leaving us this month; the lucky lady is setting off for London to pursue an MFA in Script Writing. Natalia would like to thank Metro “for being such a great place to work.” And what better way to show her appreciation and say goodbye than by sharing one of her favourite films with us all?

Machuca Chile/ Spain/ UK/ France 2004, 121 min, Digital, Dir: Andrés Wood, Spanish w/ subtitles 8 @ 7PM

Two twelve-year-old boys from opposing socioeconomic backgrounds become friends on the verge of Chile’s coup d’etat in 1973. Machuca is a heartbreaking coming-of-age story that helped begin a dialogue about Pinochet’s dictatorship and the strict class system that still prevails in Chilean culture. Chile had been a democracy for five years when my mother and I moved there in 1995, but taboos like avoiding discussion of all politics, let alone Pinochet, were still observed. Over the following years, however, I noticed a shift, as the dictatorship became a common topic in Chilean media. Machuca was integral in that shift, and every time I return to Chile I see more media depicting Chile’s darkest years. Not bad for a nation that twenty-five years ago could barely say Pinochet’s name. - Natalia Knowlton

turkey shoot/// A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page and featuring live comedic commentary.

Gigli USA 2003, 121 min, Digital, Dir: Martin Best 9 @ 7PM

Remember the actors Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez? The attractive celebrities whose coupling created a wave of nicknames like Bennifer, Brangelina and Kimye? The super couple was also responsible for this Razzie Award allstar (nominated for Worst Picture, Actor and Actress of the Decade). The movie’s IMDB listing threatens to put the Turkey Shoot blurbist out of business: “The violent story about how a criminal lesbian, a tough-guy hit-man with a heart of gold, and a mentally challenged man came to be best friends through a hostage.” To quote super couple Daveyjeff, “Nuff said.”

Moulin Rouge! USA/ Australia 2001, 127 min, Digital, Dir: Baz Luhrmann 10 @ 7PM

It’s the belle époque in late 1890s Paris, and Christian (Ewan McGregor) has left behind his bourgeois father to seek his fortune in the bohemian underworld of Monmartre, where the eccentric artist, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), introduces him to a new world and the scandalous dance known as the can can in the infamous dance hall, brothel, and theatre: the Moulin Rouge. It’s here that Christian falls into a tragically doomed romance with the courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman), the star of the play he is writing, which parallels their romance and sets the romance to a rock music soundtrack a century ahead of the times. Presented in conjunction with the Art Gallery of Alberta’s exhibition: Toulouse-Lautrec and La Vie Moderne: Paris 1880-1910, Sept 6 - Nov.16.

Based on his memoir of the same name, Life Itself recounts the life and times of world- renowned film critic Roger Ebert: his precocious start in Urbana, Illinois; his migration to Chicago and unexpected promotion to movie critic at the Chicago Sun-Times; his wild days at the legendarily rough-and-tumble O’Rourke’s Pub... ; his passion for politics and social justice, as well as Russ Meyer and big-breasted women; his decades-long television partnership with Gene Siskel; and his heroic fight with the cancer that finally claimed his life in 2013. Directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and executive produced by Ebert’s longtime friend Martin Scorsese, Life Itself is an engrossing, intimate and moving portrait of one of the most beloved and influential figures of twentiethcentury journalism. Ebert’s Pics/// Roger Ebert (1942 – 2013) wasn’t a huge fan of Top 10 Film lists, but he did go on record with his Ten Greatest Films of All Time. When Ebert was inevitably asked to name his favourite film, Fellini’s La Dolce Vita would spring most quickly to his mind. Presented alongside the new documentary, Life Itself, La Dolce Vita and another modern masterpiece on Ebert’s list, Scorceses’ Raging Bull, will provide the companion pieces to Metro’s commemorative triptych of the legendary critic’s life.

La Dolce Vita Italy/ France 1960, 178 min, Digital, Dir: Federico Fellini, Italian & English w/ subtitles 13 @ 9:15PM, 14, 21 @ 3:15PM

Federico Fellini’s shot La Dolce Vita in 1959 on the Via Veneto, the Roman street of nightclubs, sidewalk cafes and the parade of the night. His hero is a gossip columnist, Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni), who chronicles “the sweet life” of fading aristocrats, second-rate movie stars, aging playboys and women of commerce. The movie leaps from one visual extravaganza to another, following Marcello as he chases down stories and women. A series of nights and dawns, descents and ascents. ...When I saw the movie right after Mastroianni died, I thought that Fellini and Marcello had taken a moment of discovery and made it immortal. There may be no such thing as the sweet life. But it is necessary to find that out for yourself. (Roger Ebert)

Raging Bull USA 1980, 129 min, Digital, Dir: Martin Scorsese 15, 18, 21 @ 9:15PM

Raging Bull is not a film about boxing but about a man with paralyzing jealousy and sexual insecurity, for whom being punished in the ring serves as confession, penance and absolution. It is no accident that the screenplay never concerns itself with fight strategy. For Jake LaMotta, (Robert De Niro) what happens during a fight is controlled not by tactics but by his fears and drives. Martin Scorsese’s 1980 film was voted in three polls as the greatest film of the decade, and the movie won Oscars for De Niro and editor Thelma Schoonmaker and also was nominated for best picture, director, sound, and supporting actor (Joe Pesci) and actress (Cathy Moriarty). It’s the best film I’ve seen about the low self-esteem, sexual inadequacy and fear that lead some men to abuse women. Boxing is the arena, not the subject. (Roger Ebert)

Customer Appreciation Night/// Finding Vivian Maier

Under the Skin

USA 2013, 83 min, Digital, Dir: John Maloof, Charlie Siskel 14 @ 7PM

UK 2013, 108 min, Digital, Dir: Jonathan Glazer 14 @ 9PM

Vivian Maier’s photographs seemed destined for obscurity, lost among the clutter of the countless objects she’d collected throughout her life. Instead, these images have shaken the world of street photography and irrevocably changed the life of the man who brought them to the public eye. This film brings to life the saga of the discovery and unraveling the mystery through her films, photographs, odd collections, and personal accounts from the people who knew her simply as a nanny. What started as a blog to show her work has quickly became a viral sensation in the photography world. Free Admission & Popcorn!

A voluptuous woman of unknown origin (Scarlett Johansson) combs the highways in search of isolated or forsaken men, luring a succession of lost souls into an otherworldly lair. They are seduced, stripped of their humanity, and never heard from again. Based on the novel by Michael Faber, the film examines human experience from the perspective of an unforgettable heroine who grows too comfortable in her borrowed skin. A visionary film of existential science fiction that journeys to the heart of what it means to be human, extraterrestrial - or something in between. Free Admission & Popcorn!

Metro Cinema gets a Facelift This July, Garneau’s screen went ‘dark’ for 5 days so we could undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the venerable old cinema. Next time you visit, we hope you notice the spruced up lobby and concession, and the freshly steam-cleaned seats. The stage received a facelift, while backstage enhancements are underway. The grand 24’ proscenium arch has undergone the most obvious transformation, sporting new plaster and spiffy deco-era colours. Please join us in applauding the extraordinary work of the project’s leader, Allan Mulholland, and the team: Maggie Hardy, Katie Hartfeil, Tola Adeshina, Rose-Eva Forgues-Jenkins, Joseph Hartfeil, and Olesya Komarnytska. Huzzah!

Inspired by the crime novels of Dashiell Hammett and other masters of Hardboiled fiction, Rian Johnson’s debut film Brick sets noir-drenched mystery in a modern-day California high school. With the discovery of his ex-girlfriend’s body in a storm drain, outsider Brendan (Joseph Gordon- Levitt) turns into a dogged 1930s gumshoe. While dodging threats from fellow students and faculty members, he must navigate a Chandleresque high school underground of dubious dames and petty thugs in an effort to find the truth.

Cult Cinema/// A monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff Noel.

Natural Born Killers USA 1994, 118 min, Digital, Dir: Oliver Stone 23 @ 9:15PM

Mickey and Mallory (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis), <are> two mass murderers who go on a killing spree across America, making sure everybody knows their names, so they get credit for their crimes. The movie is not simply about their killings, however, but also about the way they electrify the media and exhilarate the public. Stone has touched a nerve here, because his film isn’t about violence, it’s about how we respond to violence, and that truly is shocking... Stylistically, the film is a cinematic bazaar... Seeing this movie once is not enough. The first time is for the visceral experience, the second time is for the meaning. (Roger Ebert)

Chef USA 2014, 114 min, Digital, Dir: Jon Favreau 26, 30 @ 7PM, Oct 1 @ 9:15PM

Introduced to Twitter by his tech-savvy son Percy, Carl accidentally starts a flame war and loses his job. Encouraged by his ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara) to start a Cuban food truck together with his son and his friend Martin (John Leguizamo), Carl takes to the road, hoping to reignite his creative genius.

Australia/ USA 2014, 103 min, Digital, Dir: David Michôd 26 @ 9:15PM, 29, Oct 1 @ 7PM, 30, Oct 2 @ 9:30PM

The Australian Outback of The Rover is a world ten years after a great Western economic collapse. It’s a near future of social and economic decay that mirrors the American and Australian gold rushes of the 19th century. People are drawn to the land’s mines and with them come the the hustlers and criminals who hope to exploit the mines’ margins. At the centre of this world are two men: an embittered Australian man (Guy Pearce), a former soldier who has lost his farm and family; the other, a naive American (Robert Pattison), too young to remember a time when things were anything other than what they are.

Goodfellas USA 1990, 146 min, Digital, Dir: Martin Scorsese 26 @ 11:30PM, 29 @ 9:15PM

Most films, even great ones, evaporate like mist once you’ve returned to the real world; they leave memories behind, but their reality fades fairly quickly. Not this film, which shows America’s finest filmmaker at the peak of his form. No finer film has ever been made about organized crime.... GoodFellas, is a memoir of life in the Mafia, narrated in the first person by Henry (Ray Liotta), an IrishItalian kid whose only ambition, from his earliest teens, was to be a “wise guy,” a Mafioso. We also meet Jimmy (Robert De Niro), and Tommy (Joe Pesci) and we follow them all through 30 years; at first, through years of unchallenged power, then through years of decline and then into betrayal and decay. (Roger Ebert)18+ Friday only.

The Auctioneer Canada 2012, 58 min, Digital, Dir: Hans olson 28 @ 2PM

Dale Menzak is an auctioneer specializing in the sale of family farms. A man of few words when not auctioneering, he also works parttime as an undertaker. From his portable auctioneer’s booth, Dale helps to liquidate antiquated farm equipment, after which he dons a sombre necktie and returns to his job at the funeral home. Set against a backdrop of gorgeous prairie vistas, The Auctioneer observes Dale from a respectful distance as he facilitates the difficult process of letting go. “A keenly observed world of small town friendliness…, all framed by breathtaking endless skies and tilled fields that once formed a pastoral patchwork quilt.” (Hot Docs)

Indigenous Perspectives: First nations & Métis Filmmaking in Alberta 27 @ 7PM

The Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) is proud to host its annual Film Night. This year PAA focuses on indigenous filmmaking in Alberta and by Albertan filmmakers outside of the province. The first part of the program features short films, including amateur footage of a Métis wedding in the 1940s; The Ballad of Crowfoot, a film made by the NFB’s ground-breaking Indian Film Crew; Voice of My Grandmother, about Cree oral traditions; and Gil Cardinal’s Genie-winning, Foster Child. The second part, showcases the work of Edmonton- based filmmaker Gil Cardinal, with a screening of Totem: The Return of the G’psgolox Pole. This film tells the story of the return of a Haisla totem pole from a Swedish museum to the Haisla people. Part 1 begins at 7PM; Part 2 at 9PM.

Why Shoot the Teacher? Canada 1977, 100 min, 35mm, Dir: Silvio narizzano 28 @ 7PM

Why Shoot the Teacher? is based on a book of the same name by Max Braithwaite. Filmed on location in Hanna, Alberta, it tells the story of an urban east-province Canadian (Bud Cort) fresh from college who travels to Western Canada in the mid-1930s to accept a teaching position at a small rural schoolhouse, a one-room school house in the fictional rural settlement of Willowgreen, Saskatchewan because there are no other jobs available. James DeFelice won a 1978 Canadian Film Award for the film’s adapted screenplay. Edmonton-based producer, Fil Fraser is considered by many to be one of the legendary founders of feature film production in Alberta, and will introduce the film. Other special guests, TBA.

Edmonton’s first-ever theatrically released suspense thriller revolves around a city’s top security team investigating a mystery caller connected with a threat to North America, a diamond theft, and the Dalai Lama’s struggle for freedom in Tibet. Harmless fun and games soon find the stakes raised beyond anybody’s guess. Each character leverages knowledge for personal power. Boasting local talent and locations, this original story in the age of information is the Shreela & Kash G rated debut feature, having had its world premiere across multiple cities in India’s largest cinema chain, followed by a successful run in Canada.
