Breadcrumb Trail USA 2014, 90 min, Digital, Dir: Lance Bangs 1 @ 7PM
“My new documentary Breadcrumb Trail is about Slint and the Louisville music culture they emerged from. It includes footage going back to the early 1990s that I shot when repeatedly driving up from Athens, GA to Louisville to try to chase rumours of what the guys were up to. Over the years I tracked down more stories about them, then began filming interviews with each of the band members and their contemporaries. We also unearthed some unseen/uncirculated footage from their few live performances as well as the writing and arranging of Spiderland.” (Lance Bangs) With Special Live Music Performance by Electricity for Everybody! Music at 6:30 pm. Film at 7pm.
Her USA 2013, 126 min, Digital, Dir: Spike Jonze 3, 9 @ 9:15PM, 5 @ 1:30PM, 6 @ 9:30PM, 7 @ 7PM
Set in the Los Angeles of the slight future, Her follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive, and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. An original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.
Spotlight on Ingmar Bergman/// Ingmar Bergman is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential film directors of all time. His body of visionary and existential cinematic work originated the auteurist adjective “Bergmanesque.” With four films, this series showcases the artistic mastery that term describes and coincides with the release of the new documentary Liv & Ingmar, which explores the life-long relationship between the filmmaker and the Danish actress, Liv Ullmann. Bergman often said he considered Persona and Cries and Whispers (both starring Ullmann) as two of his best films. A newly restored 35mm print of The Seventh Seal rounds out this spotlight. A BERGMAN FILM AND LIV & INGMAR AVAILABLE FOR DOUBLE BILL ADMISSION APR 5 @ 7PM, APR 6 @ 2PM, & APR 8 @ 7:15PM.
Liv & Ingmar Norway 2012, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Dheeraj Akolkar, Swedish & English w/ subtitles 4 @ 7PM, 5, 8 @ 9PM, 6 @ 4PM
Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman met in 1965 during the filming of Persona. Both were married, and there was a difference in age: Liv was 25, and Ingmar was 47. But none of it mattered. They lived together for five years, had a child, and made 11 films together. Now, nearly 5 decades later, Ingmar is gone ... but their bond remains. Told entirely from Liv’s point-of-view through an interview filmed at the house she shared with Bergman, Liv & Ingmar brings together excerpts from their films, still photos, behind-the-scenes footage, and personal letters to tell the tale of two great artists who were also human beings, lovers, and friends. (TIFF)
Cries and Whispers (Viskningar och rop) Sweden 1972, 91 min, Digital, Dir: Ingmar Bergman, Swedish, German & Danish w/ subtitles 5 @ 7PM, 11 @ 9PM, 19 @ 4:30PM
Bergman creates a testament to the strength of the soul - and a film of absolute power. Karin and Maria come to the aid of their dying sister, Agnes, but jealousy, manipulation, and selfishness come before empathy. Agnes, tortured by cancer, transcends the pettiness of her sisters’ concerns to remember moments of being - moments that Bergman, with the help of Academy Award winning cinematographer Sven Nykvist, translates into pictures of staggering beauty and unfathomable horror.
The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet) Sweden 1957, 95 min, Newly Restored 35mm print, Dir: Ingmar Bergman, Swedish & Latin w/ subtitles 6, 21 @ 2PM, 12, 20 @ 7PM
Disillusioned and exhausted after a decade of battling in the Crusades, a knight (Max von Sydow) encounters Death on a desolate beach and challenges him to a fateful game of chess. Much studied, imitated, even parodied, but never outdone, Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s search for meaning, The Seventh Seal, was one of the benchmark foreign imports of America’s 1950s art-house heyday, pushing cinema’s boundaries and ushering in a new era of movie going.
Persona Sweden 1966, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Ingmar Bergman, Swedish & English w/ subtitles 8 @ 7:15PM, 13 @ 4:15PM, 21 @ 9PM
By the mid sixties, Bergman had already conjured many of cinema’s most unforgettable images. But with the radical Persona, this supreme artist attained new levels of visual poetry. In the first of a series of legendary performances for him, Liv Ullmann plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute; an equally mesmerizing Bibi Andersson is the garrulous young nurse caring for her in a remote island cottage. While isolated together there, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference that would prove to be one of cinema’s most influential creations. Acted with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by the great Sven Nykvist, Persona is a penetrating, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth.
The Festival of (In)appropriation #6: Experimental Found Footage Films Canada 2014, 90 min Digital, Dir: Various 3 @ 7PM
Whether you call it collage, compilation, found footage, détournement, or recycled cinema, the incorporation of previously shot materials into new artworks is a practice that has generated novel juxtapositions of elements which have produced new meanings and ideas that may not have been intended by the original makers, that are, in other words “inappropriate.” Founded in 2009, the Festival of (In)appropriation is a yearly showcase of contemporary short audiovisual works that appropriate film or video footage and repurpose it in “inappropriate” and inventive ways. This year’s show is curated by Jaimie Baron, Greg Cohen, and Lauren Berliner. Curator Jaimie Baron in person!
gateway to Cinema/// Presented by The Gateway, official student newspaper at the University of Alberta.
Mean Girls USA 2004, 97 min, Digital, Dir: Mark Waters 9 @ 7PM
Tina Fey successfully takes her sassy wit to the big screen with this clever teen comedy. Cady (Lindsey Lohan) is a home-schooled kid raised in Africa attending public school for the first time, who uses jungle animals as her frame of reference. The popular girls are The Plastics: Barbie-esque divas led by Regina (Rachel McAdams), who adopt the brainy Cady for sport. When Cady stupidly reveals her crush on Regina’s ex, she quickly becomes a target. Familiar but updated, edgy portrayal of the high school social caste system is probably the smartest teen comedy since the heyday of John Hughes. Admission is free for students with valid ID. 18+.
Mostly Water/// Metro Shorts Finale 10 @ 7PM
Like Father, Like Son (Soshite chichi ni naru) Japan 2013, 121 min, Digital, Dir: Hirokazu Koreeda, Japanese w/ subtitles 4, 13 @ 9PM, 5 @ 4:15PM, 6 @ 7PM, 7, 10 @ 9:30PM, 12 @ 4PM
In this poignant exploration of the nature versus nurture debate, an ambitious Tokyo architect, Ryota, and his wife, Midori, discover that their only son was switched at birth. Meanwhile, their birth-son is raised by easygoing Yudai and Yukari with their three children above the family appliance shop outside the city. Brought together by circumstance, the two very different families make contact and begin to socialize and agree to swap the boys on weekends so they can get to know their “real” families. Turning the stuff of melodrama into an acutely observed character study, the film documents the impact of this momentous revelation on all involved especially on the driven, emotionally reserved Ryota, whose soul-searching about the meaning of fatherhood is the heart of the film.

from cinematic history to contemporary filmmaking; from the intensely existential, right back to the purely amusing and completely timeless - we’re sending off april in style with a celebration of the golden age of hollywood, beginning with the citadel theatre’s gala presentation of singin’ in the rain, followed by six golden era gems.
also this month, Metro travels the globe from bergman’s denmark to new cinema from Japan (like father like son) and chile (gloria), and through the life of an idiosyncratic photographer (finding vivian Maier). we’re keeping it local too, with Mostly water’s showcase of local filmmakers in the season finale of Metro shorts. easter weekend is also choc full of delights, with opera in cinema’s presentation of wagner’s parsifal another sugar-fuelled saturday Morning all-you-can-eat-cereal cartoon party, and the princess bride swashbuckling onto our screen - in high definition!
we all love going to the movies. More than just entertainment, the best films also have the power to enchant, inform, and transport us, viscerally and emotionally. few filmmakers have been able to achieve this feat so consistently as the artist in Metro’s spotlight this month, who once said of his work: “i don’t want to make merely intellectual films. i want audiences to feel, to sense my films. this to me is much more important than understanding them.” with that sentiment, we present a spotlight on ingmar bergman, featuring a new documentary, liv & ingmar, along with three of his masterpieces: the seventh seal (a newly restored 35mm print!), persona, and cries & whispers.

Synecdoche, New York USA 2008, 124 min, Digital, Dir: Charlie Kaufman 22 @ 9:15PM
In one of his best leading roles, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman is Caden Cotard, a neurotic playwright who, upon receiving a MacArthur grant, sets out to mount a production that will capture the tragic mundanity of life. Casting actors as everyone he knows, and other actors as those actors, the project soon blooms into impossible proportions, creating a duplicate New York inside a seemingly endless warehouse, and following Caden and his loved ones into the future as they struggle with life and stumble towards death. Cult Cinema proudly presents this, the only film directed by screenwriting giant Charlie Kaufman, in tribute to one of the finest actors of our time.
turkey shoot/// A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page and featuring live comedic commentary.
The Next Karate Kid USA 1994, 107 min, Digital, Dir: Christopher Cain 23 @ 7PM
Turkey Shoot’s “Great Actors Showing Less” series continues with two time Oscar winner Hillary Swank as a troubled adolescent girl who turns to Mr. Miyagi for help. Faster than you can say, “wax on, wax off,” this odd couple knocks us out with relentless montages, and a fighting spirit that makes us call out for ignominious surrender. This movie is perfect for those who wonder if it’s possible to overcome great adversity, escape early mistakes, and still win a couple of freakin’ Oscars.

Singin’ in the Rain USA 1952, 103 min, Digital, Dir: Stanley Green, Gene Kelly 25 @ 7PM
Song and dance, innocence and nostalgia, heart-tugging romance and surreal comedy shake well, add an umbrella and you’ve got the sublime cocktail that makes Singin’ one of the most memorable musical extravaganzas of the past century. Co-director Kelly shines as silent-movie idol Don Lockwood, whose career and leading lady are imperilled by the coming of sound - until he hooks up with lovely ingenue Debbie Reynolds. Leading the chorus, the great supporting cast includes Millard Mitchell, Douglas Fowley, and stunner Cyd Charisse, whose long-legged “Broadway Melody” ballet with Kelly nearly steals the show. What a glorious feeling!
MAKE MINE HOLLYWOOD: SELECTIONS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE Inspired by the world premiere of the Citadel Theatre’s production of Make Mine Love and their Gala screening of Singin’ in the Rain, Metro Cinema celebrates “The Golden Age of Hollywood,” with a selection of some of the most critically-acclaimed and significant “must-see” films of that era. From lighthearted romantic comedies and moody noirs, to backstage intrigues and dramas both gritty and epic, we’ve hand-picked six films representing a spectrum of genres, themes, and styles that together capture the essence of Hollywood Classic .
Sunset Blvd. USA 1950, 110 min, Digital, Dir: Billy Wilder 27, 30 @ 7PM
It Happened One Night USA 1934, 105 min, Digital, Dir: Frank Capra 26, 28 @ 7PM
The story of a salty, hooch-swilling reporter (Clark Gable) who is thrown together with a spoiled society heiress (Claudette Colbert) on an overnight Greyhound bus to New York. The film follows them as they bicker, backbite and clamour for the upper hand. Every line of dialogue is calculated bliss, the chemistry between the leads is magnificent, and the backdrop of Depression-era America allows for a prescient and amusing subplot about how well-heeled urbanites are compelled to misbehave when they have no money in their designer pockets. The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza) Italy/ France 2013, 146 min, Digital, Dir: Paolo Sorrentino, Italian w/ subtitles 27, 28, 30 & MAY 3 @ 9:15PM
Winner of the 2014 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, The Great Beauty reunites provocative Italian auteur Paolo Sorrentino with star Toni Servillo after their triumph with Il Divo, and evokes Fellini’s classic La Dolce Vita with its sardonic odyssey into Rome’s highclass nightlife. Having long since abandoned his ideals along with his artistic ambitions, aging, cynical, world-weary journalist Jep Gambardella (Servillo) drifts through the social whirl of the Eternal City, seeking to keep the emptiness at bay through compulsive partying, shallow conversations and casual sex, while the timeless beauty of the city’s monuments and statues acts as a wordless reminder of a glorious past now lost. Citizen Kane USA 1941, 119 min, Digital, Dir: Orson Welles 26 @ 9:15PM, MAY 1 @ 6:45PM, MAY 4 @ 1PM
Orson Welles was only 25 when he directed this masterpiece, and it remains one of the most phenomenal motion pictures ever made. Welles, of course, also stars as Charles Foster Kane, a ruthless man who built a newspaper publishing empire and a character supposedly modeled after the real-life William Randolph Hearst. Trailblazing in so many respects, from Gregg Toland’s complex camera and lighting to Bernard Herrmann’s score to one of the finest ensemble casts (including Joseph Cotten, Everett Sloane and Agnes Moorehead) ever assembled. With an Academy Award-winning script by Welles and Herman J. Mankiewicz.
The Maltese Falcon USA 1941, 100 min, Digital, Dir: John Huston 27 @ 4PM, MAY 1 @ 9:15PM, MAY 8 @ 7PM
Adapted from Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon is a classic mystery with a masterfully drawn group of characters involved in a dangerous and double-crossing hunt for a bejeweled golden falcon statue. Humphrey Bogart plays Sam Spade, a hired detective who shares an office with his partner, Miles Archer. Unknown to Archer, they also share a woman – Spade is having an affair with his wife. Suspenseful, labyrinthine, and brilliantly cast, it’s one of the most influential film noirs -- as well as a showcase for Bogart at his finest.
One of Wilder’s finest, and certainly the blackest of all Hollywood’s scab-scratching accounts of itself, the film establishes its relentless acidity in the opening scene... What follows in flashback is a tale of humiliation, exploitation, and dashed dreams, as a feckless, bankrupt screenwriter (William Holden) pulls into a crumbling mansion in search of refuge from his creditors, and becomes inextricably entangled in the possessive web woven by a faded star of the silents (Gloria Swanson). The performances are suitably sordid, the direction precise, the camerawork appropriately noir, and the memorably sour script sounds bitter-sweet echoes of the Golden Age of Tinseltown. (Time Out)
All About Eve USA 1950, 138 min, Digital, Dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz MAY 2 @ 6:45PM, MAY 3 @ 4PM, MAY 5 @ 9:15PM
Seemingly timid fan Eve (Anne Baxter) ingratiates herself into Broadway mega-star Bette Davis’ inner circle in this backstage, backstabbing masterpiece by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Eve wastes no time stealing Davis’ spotlight and man (Gary Merrill), but Davis takes nothing lying down. A superb supporting cast (George Sanders, Marilyn Monroe, Thelma Ritter and Celeste Holm) brings New York’s theater set to life. “Fasten your seatbelts...it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
On the Waterfront USA 1954, 108 min, Digital, Dir: Elia Kazan MAY 3 @ 7PM, MAY 4 @ 3:30PM, MAY 6 @ 9:15PM
Marlon Brando gives the performance of his career as the tough prize fighter turned longshoreman Terry Malloy in this masterpiece of urban poetry. A raggedly emotional tale of individual failure and social corruption, the film follows Terry’s deepening moral crisis as he must decide whether to remain loyal to the mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly and his right-hand man, Terry’s brother, Charley, as the authorities close in on them. Driven by the vivid, naturalistic direction of Elia Kazan and savory, streetwise dialogue by Budd Schulberg, On the Waterfront was an instant sensation, winning eight Academy Awards. (Criterion)
