DECEMBER 2012 SCHEDULE United in Anger: A history of AcT UP USA 2012, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Jim hubbard 1 @ 7PM
The world Before her canada 2012, 90 min, Digital, Dir: nisha Pahuja, hindi with Subtitles nov 30 @ 9:30, 1 @ 2:15, 2 @ 12:15, 2, 6 @ 7, 4, 5 @ 9:30
On the surface, Nisha Pahuja’s fast-moving, thought-provoking documentary is a story about the rise of beauty pageants in India and the Hindu fundamentalists who protest them. She alternates between two women: in the countryside, Prachi runs militaristic boot camps for the fundamentalists as a way to empower herself; in Mumbai, Ruhi struts the catwalks to try to win the Miss India title and her ticket out of poverty. But, ultimately, both are victims of a woefully patriarchal society, whether it’s Prachi suffering her father’s beatings or Ruhi submitting to the almost comical indignities of the so-called progressive, westernized contests (Georgia Straight). winner of Best Documentary awards at both the 2012 Tribeca & Toronto International Film Festivals.
United in Anger: A History of ACT UP is a featurelength documentary about how ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), a small group of people, came together to change the world and save each other’s lives. The film takes the viewer through the planning and execution of exhilarating major actions with additional information about these historic events that forced the U.S. government and mainstream media to deal with the AIDS crisis. United in Anger reveals the group’s complex culture while also exploring the profound grief, sexiness, and incredible energy of ACT UP. in PARTnERShiP wiTh hiv EDMonTon foR woRlD AiDS DAY
Bill w. USA 2012, 104 min, Digital, Dir: Dan carracino & kevin hanlon 1 @ 12:15PM, 2 @ 2PM, 3 @ 7PM, 6 @ 8:45PM
Bill w. tells the story of william G. wilson, cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, a man included in TIME Magazine’s “100 Persons of the 20th Century.” Interviews, recreations, and rare archival material reveal how Bill wilson, a hopeless drunk near death from his alcoholism, found a way out of his own addiction and then forged a path for countless others to follow. with Bill as its driving force, A.A. grew from a handful of men to a worldwide fellowship of over 2 million men and women – a success that made him an icon within A.A., but also an alcoholic unable to be a member of the very society he had created. A reluctant hero, Bill wilson lived a life of sacrifice and service, and left a legacy that continues every day, all around the world.
laurence Anyways canada/france 2012, 168 min, 35mm, Dir: Xavier Dolan, french with Subtitles nov 30 @ 6:30, 1 @ 9:30, 2 @ 4PM, 2 @ 8:45PM, 3 @ 9PM, 5 @ 6:30
Monty Python and the holy grail Uk 1974, 91 min, Digital, Dir: Terry gilliam & Terry Jones nov 30 @ 11:30, 1 @ 4PM
And now! At Last! Another film completely different from some of the other films which aren’t quite the same as this one is. King Arthur (Graham Chapman) and his knights Sir Galahad the Pure (Michael Palin) , Sir Lancelot the Brave (John Cleese), the wise Sir Bedevere (Terry Jones), and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as- Sir Lancelot (Eric Idle) embark on a low-budget search for the Grail, encountering many very silly obstacles. Classic film comedy on the big screen...costumes and coconuts encouraged!
Director Xavier Dolan delivers a striking love story set in 1990’s Montreal. A man, Laurence (Melvil Poupaud), has just told his girlfriend, Fred (Suzanne Clément), that he wants to become a woman. what follows is a tumultuous, decadelong odyssey during which the couple fights passionately to salvage their relationship. In spite of the odds and in spite of each other, they confront the prejudices of their friends, ignore the council of their families, and brave the phobias of the society they offend. … As epic visually as it is in scope, from its first frame Laurence Anyways is rendered with Dolan’s signature panache. Certainly his most ambitious film to date, it is a monumental tale about relationships and identity—a story of impossible love that once experienced, can never be fully relinquished. (VIFF)

A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man dies but once. B.C. renegades race down mountain highways on customized longboards, while a middle-aged skateboarder fights to keep his Ottawa skate park and creaky knees operational. what starts out as a gonzo skate movie turns into a surprisingly heartfelt documentary that bears witness to the power of community, dedication and the DIy spirit. with intimate and candid moments that may lead you to think this is a mockumentary, Highway Gospel is a humorous and at times heartbreaking multi-character documentary that strikes an intricate balance between rowdy and insightful while serving as a reminder that heartfelt stories can also be hilarious.

Four Films by HAYAO MIYAZAKI Part 1 of the Studio Ghibli Collection This December, Metro Cinema is thrilled to present four films by animation master Hayao Miyazaki! In his homeland, Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, iconic in Japan, is one of the most beloved film institutions of all time, breaking box office records and even spawning its own museum in Inokashira Park in Mitaka, just outside of Tokyo. Miyazaki’s films are known all over the world for their strikingly beautiful and inventive artistry, as well as their epic fantastical narratives and profound humanism. The four films chosen here span Miyazaki’s career: from the forming of the acclaimed studio, with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, to success and recognition in North America, with the Academy Award nominated Howl’s Moving Castle. They represent many of Miyazaki’s signature motifs, including strong female heroines, a fascination with flight, and a deep interest for the environment and humanity’s relationship with it. All films will be shown on brand new 35 mm prints, and we are pleased to have our monthly series Graphic Content present one of them. Stay tuned in the coming months for more films from the amazing Studio Ghibli collection!
Graphic Content///
Curated by Matt Bowes and Erin Fraser, presented by Metro Cinema and Warp One Comics and Games. graphiccontent.org
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Kaze no tani Naushika) Japan 1984, 117 min, 35mm, English dubbed, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki 18 @ 7PM
Howl’s Moving Castle (Hauru no ugoku shiro) Japan 2004, 119 min, 35mm, subtitled, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki 14 @ 7PM, 15 @ 2PM, 16 @ 4PM
In this charming fable based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones, a haberdasher named Sophie (voiced by Chieko Baisho) is transformed into an old crone by the Witch of the Waste, antagonist to the mysterious wizard Howl (voiced by Takuya Kimura). In order to get the spell reversed, old Sophie hitches a ride on the eponymous castle owned by Howl, meeting a living scarecrow and a fire demon named Calcifer along the way, as the wizard attempts to stop the outbreak of war in the region. A visually breathtaking film, an impassioned argument for pacifism influenced as much by steampunk as it is by the Baba Yaga story, Howl’s Moving Castle is like its director, a paean to the irrepressible spirit – regardless of age.
Kiki’s Delivery Service (Majo no takkyûbin) Japan 1989, 102 min, 35mm, English dubbed, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki 22 @ 7PM, 23 @ 4PM, 30 @ 2PM
Upon reaching the age of thirteen, it is customary for witches to spend a year living on their own. Once Kiki (voiced by Kirsten Dunst) reaches this momentous age, she moves to the big city of Koriko with her pet cat Jiji (voiced by the late Phil Hartman), where she uses the witch power she’s best at, flying, to her own advantage by starting a delivery service. Though beset by obstacles and her own insecurities about becoming a witch, Kiki succeeds in her new job through hard work, and with a little help from her friends. One of the Miyazaki’s most beloved children’s films, Kiki’s Delivery Service is beautifully rendered and imaginative coming of age tale about the complexities of finding one’s place in the world.
In the far future after a devastating calamity known as the “Seven Days of Fire”, the Kingdom of Tolmekia, represented by Kushana (voiced by Uma Thurman) gets its hands on an ancient superweapon, threatening to begin the cycle of violence and destruction once again. The Valley of the Wind’s courageous Princess Nausicaä (voiced by Alison Lohman) must intervene before the short-sighted Tolmekians destroy the Toxic Jungle, a strange and wonderful place inhabited by large insectoid mutants. Graphic Content is proud to present one of the greatest animated films ever made. Adapted from Miyazaki’s own epic manga series of the same name, Nausicaä is the visionary director’s second film and it ultimately launched Studio Ghibli itself. Often considered to be Miyazaki’s masterpiece, a distillation of his philosophy of environmentalism and heroism. Encore Screenings: 21 @ 4PM, 27 @ 2PM
Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime) Japan 1997, 133 min, 35mm, English dubbed, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki 26 @ 7PM, 28 @ 4PM, 29 @ 2PM
In a fantasy version of Japan’s Muromachi Period (1337-1573), a small village is attacked by a demonic boar-god. Ashitaka (voiced by Billy Crudup), prince of the area, is the last survivor of the battle, cursed with unholy strength and agility that will eventually prove fatal unless treated; he travels deep in to the sacred Great Forest in search of a cure. Upon his arrival, he discovers a war waging between nature and man as the industrialized Iron Town exploits and kills the forest under the leadership of the determined Lady Eboshi. Deep in the forest, Ashitaka encounters a girl named San (voiced by Claire Danes), a member of a wolf pack that might hold the key to ending the war. A landmark in animation, Princess Mononoke is an epic saga that was not only the highest grossing film in Japan upon its release, but also put Studio Ghibli on the map in North America.

The contract killer and his hostage develop an unusual bond. Like a modern-day, twisted fairy tale, “Killer Joe” Cooper becomes the prince to Dottie’s Cinderella. Based on the play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts, Killer Joe is a garish, provocative black comedy from Academy Awardwinning director William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection).

Cult Cinema/// A monthly series of eccentric classics and unusual treasures. Curated by Jeff Noel.
Casablanca USA 1942, 102 min, Digital, Dir: Michael Curtiz 19 @ 7PM
A perfect example of studio-era filmmaking, Casablanca went from box office success to best picture winner, and then transcended that claim by becoming one of the most iconic movies of the Twentieth Century. Set during the Second World War in neutral Morocco, Casablanca made a superstar of Humphrey Bogart as Rick, a mysterious nightclub owner who is forced to choose between his loyalty to himself and the good of the free world. When the lost-love of his life comes through town with her freedom fighting husband, only he can help them secure the letters of transit they need to escape persecution and flee to America. Encore screening Dec 26 @ 2PM
USA 2012, 144 min, 35mm, Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson 21 @ 7PM, 22 @ 1:30PM, 22, 23, 28 @ 9PM, 27, 29 @ 6:45PM, 30 @ 4PM
In an arresting return to the big screen, Joaquin Phoenix plays a troubled soldier in post – WW II America. Stripped of every common civility, he rages through life like an animal, unable to keep a job, to attract a woman, to live in his own skin. By chance one night he jumps on board a docked ship and stows away as it sets sail. He soon discovers that the ship belongs to one Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the charismatic founder of a new religion. With his wife (Amy Adams), Dodd probes the unconscious minds of his subjects, driving them to reveal hidden vulnerabilities. The cerebral Dodd and his feral stowaway appear to be complete opposites, but they strike up a surprising friendship. In scenes of sometimes shocking soul-baring, the two forge a primal bond - until the disciple begins to question his master. (TIFF)
Metro Bizarro/// A monthly foray into the weird, wacky and wonderful world of fringe cinema.
Akira Japan 1988, 125 min, Digital, Dir: Katsushiro Otomo 21 @ 9:45PM
Neo Tokyo, 2019: Two best friends, Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata) and Tetsuo (Nozomu Sasaki) are the leaders of the Capsule motorcycle gang, battling for control over the neon-soaked city streets. When the pair come into contact with a decommissioned military experiment, Tetsuo is transformed into a powerful psychic who rivals the being named “Akira.” Kaneda must join forces with an underground rebel movement in a desperate attempt to save his friend and the city. Upon its release in the late ‘80s, Akira was one of the first anime films to introduce the Japanese art form to North America. Superb animation, horrific violence and a great futuristic design sense make this adaptation of Otomo’s epic 2182 page manga into an instant classic. A surprise hit last December, Bizarro brings this audience favourite back, just as the original story celebrates it’s 30th anniversary. Encore screening Dec 26 @ 4PM & 30 @ 9PM

Samsara is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. Filmed over a period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, Samsara transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, Samsara subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern. Searching for Sugarman Sweden/ Uk 2011, 86 min, 35 mm Dir: Malik Bendjelloul 27, 29 @ 9:30PM, 28 @ 2PM, 30 @ 7PM
In the late ‘60s, two celebrated producers, who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, discovered a musician in a Detroit bar. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon. Two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

Alien USA/ Uk 1979, 117 min, 35mm, Dir: Ridley Scott 1 @ 2PM
Alien’s plot is not a convoluted one but is linear and smart: a group of blue collar space “truckers” investigate an “alien” distress beacon on an unknown planet, pick up more than they bargain for and terror ensues. But what elevates Alien above B-movie schlock, which it unquestionably draws its roots from, is the level of artistry, design, suspense, horror and shock that Scott captured. It’s all in the details, and here his team, including noted surrealistic artist H.R. Giger, who is credited with creating the Alien’s biomechanical look, spared no effort in going for either a totally alien or a completely human, “used future” look, eschewing the stereotypically antiseptic space movies of the time (Star wars), and showing the contrast between the two in their wonderfully complex and intricate sets. The bitch is back, some 50 years later. The popular sequel amounts to non-stop, ravaging combat in space. Contact with a colony on another planet has mysteriously stopped. Fresh from deep space sleep, Ripley and a slew of pulsar-equipped Marines return to confront the mother alien at her nest, which is also inhabited by a whole bunch of the nasty critters spewing for a fight. Something’s gotta give, and the Oscar-winning special effects are especially inventive (and messy) in the alien demise department. ...Ripley discovers maternal instincts lurking within her space suit while looking after a young girl, the lone survivor of the colony.
