this strikingly lensed concert documentary follows enigmatic drag City troubadour bill Callahan (Smog) on a two-week tour from California to new York City in support of his acclaimed 2011 album, Apocalypse. Impressionistic scenes of Callahan’s life on the road are combined with the singer-songwriter’s cryptic musings (“I started playing music when I was 20, and time stopped for me then in a good way”) in this austere, beautiful portrait of both the musician and the multifarious American landscape. Bastards (Les Salauds) France/ Germany 2013, 83 min, Digital, Dir: Claire Denis, French w/ subtitles 6 @ 6:45PM, 7 @ 4PM, 7, 11 @ 9PM, 8 @ 2PM, 12 @ 7PM

les Salauds is full of striking imagery, right from its first shots of a young woman walking, naked, through the dim streets of Paris. the “why” is immediately invoked, and it is not long before we’re locked in a labyrinthine plot of family and business, betrayal and vengeance. the head of a family business is dead, and evidence suggests that a malevolent tycoon is responsible. Into this fractured world comes the dead man’s brother-in-law, who quits his job as a sailor on an oil tanker so he can get to the bottom of what has transpired... the canvas of the film is dark and troubling; unsavoury sexual desires mingle with stories of drugs, abuse, and mutilation. this is a revenge story with many twists and turns. Ably supported by Agnès Godard’s evocative camerawork and the eerie music of Stuart A. Staples and tindersticks, denis turns les Salauds into a dazzling puzzle of a film. (tIFF)

The Dirties Canada 2013, 80 min, Digital, Dir: Matt Johnson 6 @ 10:45PM, 7 @ 2PM, 8 @ 9:15PM, 10 @ 9PM

We’ve all known (or been) someone like aspiring filmmaker Matt (played by Toronto writer-director Matt Johnson): a hyperactive teenage fanboy whose every engagement with the world is filtered through incessant, intertwining references to movies, TV shows, comic books, and other pop-culture ephemera. Armed with his ever-present video camera, Matt enlists his best friend Owen to make a DIY comedy about their fantasized revenge on the school bullies who regularly victimize them - but Owen soon begins to wonder if Matt is looking to make their revenge fantasy a reality. A stylistically daring, darkly funny and creepily unsettling take on the hot-button topic of school violence, The Dirties is “the most empathetic and human portrait of bullying, and its deadly consequences, ever put on film.” (TIFF)

Herb & Dorothy USA 2008, 87 min, Digital, Dir: Megumi Sasaki 10 @ 7PM

Herb & Dorothy profiles the Vogels, a Manhattan couple who met in 1960 and began collecting art with their meagre incomes from the post office and the Brooklyn Public Library. Starting at a Robert Mangold opening, the documentary shows the now elderly Vogels in action among artists and curators as they attend events like they have for the past 40 years. The film moves between the Vogels in their art-crammed apartment and interviews with the artists who have appreciated their loyal patronage. It’s a story portraying a sheer love of art that transcends the commodification of creative work. Not only a film for art world aficionados; Herb & Dorothy will surely please anyone in the community who can use a reminder about artistic exchange in an ideal state. $2 OFF FOR AGA MEMBERS

In 1994, Toho decided to shelve the Godzilla franchise on ice until the 50th anniversary in 2004. They wanted to end the series with a bang, literally, in a film that is legendary in Godzilla circles. Godzilla arrives in Hong Kong glowing bright red with a terminal case of atomic heartburn. Scientists quickly realize the resulting explosion will decimate half the planet, and race to find a way to cool Godzilla down and stop the chain reaction. Meanwhile, a prototype “Oxygen Destroyer” is tested on samples of Godzilla’s cells, and the rapidly growing and downright evil “Destroyah” and his minions are the result. Godzilla Jr. arrives on the scene for the final battle between Destroyah and Dad, with humankind’s existence at stake!

DEDfest/// Child’s Play USA 1988, 87 min, Digital, Dir: Tom Holland 13 @ 11:30PM

It’s been 25 years since Charles Lee Ray took over the Good Guy Doll and even after all the sequels the original Child’s Play will always hold a special place in our hearts and DEDfest is proud to bring it back to the big screen for one night only! The story is simple: A single mother gives her son a beloved doll for his birthday, only to discover that it is possessed with the soul of a serial killer. With genre talents Chris Sarandon, Catherine Hicks, and Brad Dourif involved, this film still works on some many levels. So join DEDfest for this special screening and they’ll be your friend to the end...

A Christmas Story USA, 1983, 94 mins, Digital, Dir: Bob Clark 14 @ 2PM

The Summit UK/ Ireland 2012, 99 min, Digital, Dir: Nick Ryan 13, 16 @ 7PM, 15 @ 2 & 9PM, 17 @ 9:15PM, 19 @ 9:30PM

In August, 2008, 18 mountain climbers reached the top of K2. 48 hours later, 11 people were dead. While memorials paid tribute to those killed, there were also condemnations about ‘the why.’ Why do these athletes risk everything to reach a place humans are simply not meant to go? With breathtaking cinematography and jaw dropping reenactments based on the testimony of those who survived the climb, this thrilling film is about the very nature of adventure in the modern world.

“I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!” Ralphie Parker, (Peter Billingsley) a young boy living in 1940s Indiana, has only one wish for Christmas. He just needs to convince his mom (Melinda Dillon), teacher and Santa that he won’t shoot his eye out. But with bullies, the next-door neighbour’s boisterous dogs and the arrival of his father’s (Darren McGavin) major award - it’s hard to get a word in edgewise. Adapted from semi-fictional anecdotes by radio humourist Jean Shepherd (narrator), A Christmas Story is a must see modern holiday classic. FREE ADMISSION FOR CHILDREN 12 & UNDER!

Ghost in the Shell (Kôkaku Kidôtai) Japan 1995, 82 min, Digital, Dir: Mamoru Oshii 17 @ 7PM

In the near future, technology has progressed to a point where many people choose to interact with the world around them by using robot avatars, downloading their consciousnesses into the devices known as “shells”. When Japanese security agency Section 9 is faced with a threat in the form of a shell-hacker called the “Puppet Master”, they turn to their most elite agents, Major Motoko Kusanagi and her partner Batou, to track him down. Based on the groundbreaking manga series by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell was one of the most important films in the popularization of Japanese comics culture in North America. Often imitated but never entirely duplicated, the film is a startling vision of humanity’s technocentric future.

Cult Cinema/// Il Futuro (The Future) Chile/ Italy/ Germany/ Spain 2013, 94 min, Digital, Dir: Alicia Scherson, Italian/ Spanish w/ subtitles 14, 16 @ 9PM, 15, 17 @ 7PM

But as the two spend time together, Bianca unexpectedly finds normalcy and acceptance in the aging B-movie star and former Mr. Universe’s rococo mansion.

The Royal Tenenbaums USA 2001, 110 min, Digital, Dir. Wes Anderson 18 @ 9PM

In the third and defining film in Wes Anderson’s meticulously crafted filmography, Gene Hackman gives his last great performance as Royal Tenenbaum, the estranged father of an dysfunctional clan of former child-prodigies who are re-united when he fakes a terminal illness in a ploy to move back into the family home. With an incredible ensemble cast that all but disappear into their quirkily costumed characters and beautifully designed sets, Anderson creates a world two shades removed from reality in order to create the most picture perfect presentation of a broken home ever put on screen.

Special Ed Canada 2013, 100 min, Digital, Dir: John Paskievich 19 @ 7PM , 21 @ 1PM

Special Ed is a poignant and hilarious portrait of Winnipeg animator and troublemaker Ed Ackerman, who tries to resurrect a 25-year-old alphabet animation project and save his three derelict houses in Winnipeg from the wrecking ball. A dreamer and an idealist, Ed battles city hall as he tries to fix up his houses and eventually resorts to running for mayor. The film is a revealing portrait of Ackerman, his neighbours and family amidst the civic politics of downtown Winnipeg. Alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, repeated run-ins with the justice system have only sharpened Ed’s resolve to come out on top.

All is Lost USA 2013, 106 min, Digital, Dir: J. C. Chandor 20 @ 3:45PM, 21, 23, 30 @ 7PM, 22 @ 9PM, 26 @ 4PM, 27 & 29 @ 9:15PM, 28 @ 2PM

Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Robert Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, the man is forced to rely on his mariner’s intuition, a strength that belies his age, and ocean currents to carry him to salvation. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face. All is Lost is a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience.

Metro Bizarro/// A monthly foray into the weird, wild, and wonderful world of fringe cinema. Curated by Maggie Hardy.

When Jews Were Funny Canada 2013, 90 min, Digital, Dir: Alan Zweig 20 @ 7:45PM, 21 @ 9:15PM, 22 @ 4:15PM, 23, 26 @ 2PM

On the surface, When Jews Were Funny is a comedic take on the history of Jewish humour in North America. But like most of Alan Zweig’s films, it is so much more. Born out of his curiosity for the prevalence of Jewish comedians in the 1950s and 60s - a surprising trend since the Jewish community was largely marginalized and encouraged to assimilate during these decades - the film investigates America’s fascination with Jewish comics. Through interviews with some of the industry’s greats, including Shelly Berman, Shecky Greene, and David Steinberg, he examines how Jewish humourists succeeded in a homogenized market and helped build the foundations of modern-day American humour. Zweig’s deadpan questioning often leads to some hilariously comedic give-and-take moments, illuminating, not only the roots of Jewish humour, but ultimately what it means to be Jewish. (Robin Smith, Hot Docs)

Enough Said USA 2013, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Nicole Holofcener 20 @ 5:45PM, 22 @ 7PM, 23 @ 4PM, 26 @ 9:15PM

A divorced and single parent, Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughter’s impending departure for college. She meets Albert (James Gandolfini) - a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems “almost perfect” except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Marianne’s ex. Enough Said is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that sometimes comes with getting involved again.

It’s a Wonderful Life Rock & Rule Canada 1983, 77 min, Digital, Dir: Clive A. Smith 20 @ 9:30PM

In 1983 Nelvana released their first ever fulllength entirely Canadian made animated feature. That feature is the musical science fiction fantasy film Rock & Rule. In a post apocalyptic America inhabited entirely by mutant humanoids rock and roll is the one comfort afforded to a small rag tag group of musicians: Omar Angel Dizzy & Stretch. Mok Swagger is an aging rock star and Angel the sweet young girl with the golden voice is just what he needs to summon an ancient demon and keep him at the top of the charts. Featuring original songs by Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Earth Wind and Fire, and Cheap Trick, Rock & Rule is a tour de force to be reckoned with.

Home Alone USA 1990, 103 min, Digital, Dir: Chris Columbus 21 @ 4PM

A special holiday screening in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. A young boy named Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) who is accidentally left behind when his family takes off for a vacation in France over the holiday season in this beloved family comedy. Once he realizes they’ve left him “home alone,” Kevin learns to fend for himself and eventually has to protect his house against two bumbling burglars (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) who are planning to rob every house in Kevin’s suburban Chicago neighborhood. ... Culkin’s charming presence helped the film become one of the most successful ever at the time of its release. (Stephen Erlewine, Rovi). Don’t leave any child Home Alone this holiday season. Come to Metro and enjoy a true seasonal classic and support a worthy cause. A portion of all ticket sales go towards the Stollery Foundation.

USA 1946, 130 min, Digital, Dir: Frank Capra 22 @ 1:30PM

Director Frank Capra’s masterpiece and the ultimate Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life tells the tale of George Bailey, a man who in a moment of suicidal despair is sent a guardian angel to illustrate the value of his life. In this freewheeling film that illustrates clearly and unquestionably the real imprint that we all make in the world and the inherent value in every life, while still being one of the sweetest, funniest, and freshest films to come from Hollywood in the 1940s. Admission is free with a non-perishable food or monetary donation to the Edmonton Food Bank.

The Nightmare Before Christmas USA 1993, 76 min, Digital, Dir: Henry Selick 23 @ 9PM

Henry Selick (James and the Giant Peach) gets the actual directing credit but Tim Burton, who created the story and characters, gets the branding in this fanciful tale of Jack Skellington, “Pumpkin King” of Halloween Town, who is bored with trying to find new and creative ways to scare people every year. One day, Jack discovers something truly new and exciting - Christmas! Re-energized, he decides to replace “Mr. Sandy Claws” and put his own ghoulish creative twist on everyone’s favourite holiday. ...Burton’s animation extravaganza is a refreshingly original and spooky holiday treat featuring the voice talents of Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Reubens, along with sinister and entertaining music from Danny Elfman. (Jim Sinclair, Pacific Cinematheque)

Gremlins USA 1984, 106 min, Digital, Dir: Joe Dante 26 @ 7PM

Watermark Canada 2013, 100 min, Digital, Dirs: Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky 27 @ 4:15PM, 28 @ 7PM, 29 @ 4:15PM

Watermark follows Edward burtynsky’s global photographic exploration of our most vital and compromised resource: water. transporting us all over the world, the film reveals the extent to which humanity has shaped water, and how it has shaped us. Expanding on burtynsky’s photography, the film presents compelling first-hand accounts of how humanity has impacted water and captures the mesmerizing movement of water with aerial perspectives that allow us to witness the scale of what is before us. Avoiding didacticism, baichwal and burtynsky explore human reverence of water in its natural state, and the massive impact of human intervention in its life cycles. Part wonder, part lament, Watermark is a poetic and thought-provoking reflection on this most precious resource.” (tIFF)

Fumbling gadget salesman Rand Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) is looking for something really special to get his son billy (Zach Galligan). He finds it in a small store in Chinatown. the wise shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the adorable “mogwai” but relents after fully warning him “don’t expose him to bright light, don’t ever get him wet, and don’t ever, ever feed him after midnight.” naturally, this all happens and the result is a gang of nasty gremlins who decide to tear up the small town on Christmas. A lively horror comedy classic of the 80s.
