big game

Metro will be taking the first week of July off to clean up, upgrade our speakers, spruce up our stage, and clean…well, everything we can reach. All of this is in preparation for our big 75th birthday celebrations for the Garneau Theatre in September, when we’ll be…no, that’s a surprise. In the meantime, we encourage you to join us for a world of great movies this summer. We are kicking off our summer programming with a bang, with the “anti summer blockbuster blockbuster”, Big Game! A movie full of non-stop action out of Finland with Samuel L. Jackson as the President of the United States! In 2013 Metro screened the astounding documentary The Act of Killing, now we are thrilled to exclusively present the equally affecting and visually stunning follow-up film The Look of Silence. A few old favourites are back. By popular demand, we add in a special School’s Out For Summer edition of the Saturday Morning All You Can Eat Cereal Cartoon Party. And for those of you craving white Russians, a special screening of The Big Lebowski is coming in August. For fans of Studio Ghibli, we offer what may be the final new offering from these revered masters, When Marnie Was There. We’re also screening The Room on Friday July 10 like normal at 1130, but in August we’re trying something a bit different for those of you always curious but unwilling to stay up so late with a special earlier screening at 9:30 on Saturday August 8. You might think you know Jack, but in celebration of Jack Nicholson’s retirement from acting, Metro has put together a special retrospective of Jack in his prime, to help make sure, featuring 6 films from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Since coming to the Garneau, Metro has been pleased to host theatre productions intermixed with our screenings during the Edmonton International Fringe Festival. This year, we embrace the madness of Fringe entirely, featuring 8 shows in rotation in August. Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders

Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, CJSR, The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

RESTORING A MASTERPIECE In a digital era in which there can be a million identical copies of a film, it’s hard sometimes to realize how fragile our hold on our cinematic legacy can be. In April, Metro worked with FAVA and AMPIA to help shore up that legacy, raising funds for Anne Wheeler to digitally remaster her classic film Bye Bye Blues, and it was an honour to do so. Now, we are thrilled to present a trilogy of films whose rebirth and restoration – literally rising from the ashes – is almost as remarkable as the story they tell. Inspired by European neorealist masterpieces, Satyajit Ray worked with a shoestring budget and amateur cast and crew. The resulting trilogy – Pather Penchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) won accolades at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, and prompted Akira Kurosawa to state “Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.” Ray is judged one of the great masters of the world cinema. Ray received a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1992. This led to the discovery that many of his negatives were in extremely poor condition. In 1993, just months after Ray’s death, the negatives were moved and a restoration project was just underway when tragedy struck: the warehouse containing the negatives of the Apu trilogy burned down. For twenty three years, only inferior video copies of deteriorated exhibition prints have been available. All was not lost forever: at the time of the fire all the damaged negatives were stored in the hopes restoration technology would catch up to the needs of the films. By 2012 the technology was there and Criterion Pictures undertook a massive restoration effort. At L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, one of the world’s premier restoration facilities, technicians successfully rehydrated the brittle film and then set about physically repairing the elements. This meant a thousand hours of meticulous hand labor and by combining this work with existing duplicate negatives (from which technicians found excellent replacements for the unusable or missing sections of the

6

metrocinema.org

original negatives), complete versions were assembled. In the end, 40 percent of Pather Panchali and over 60 percent of Aparajito were restored directly from the original negatives. The two surviving reels of Apur Sansar were too damaged to be used in the restoration, so all of that film was restored from duplicate negatives. The Criterion Collection restoration lab then handled the final stage - digital restoration, including the elimination of dirt, debris, warps, and cracks. The Apu Trilogy opened Western viewers’ eyes to the possibilities of Indian cinema and catapulted India into a golden age of international art-house film. These films are among the most achingly beautiful, richly humane movies ever made. The return of these films to theatres marked a triumph for the archivists and preservation community. Their foresight protected these vital treasures of World Cinema even when all seemed lost. Two decades after its original negatives were burned in a fire, Satyajit Ray’s breathtaking milestone of world cinema rises from the ashes in a meticulously reconstructed new 4K restoration. The trilogy will screen at the Metro Cinema from July 17 to August 3. We begin with the premiere of Pather Panchali on July 17, which is also the Opening Night film of the inaugural India Film Festival of Alberta (July 17-19). The series culminates with a screening of the complete trilogy on Monday, August 3.

The Look of Silence is Joshua Oppenheimer’s powerful companion piece to the Oscar-nominated The Act of Killing. Through Oppenheimer’s footage of perpetrators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered, as well as the identities of the killers. This unprecedented documentary focuses on the youngest

son, who decides to break the suffocating spell of submission and terror by doing something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: he confronts the men who killed his brother asks them to accept responsibility for their actions. (thelookofsilence.com) JUL 27 @ 7PM - $5 Monday

The Act of Killing

This chilling and inventive documentary examines Indonesia, a country where killers are celebrated as heroes. The filmmakers challenge unrepentant death squad leaders to re-enact their mass killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at film festivals, The Act of Killing is an unprecedented film and according to CNN, “could well change how you view the documentary form.”

The Dog USA 2013, 100 min, Dirs: Allison Berg & Frank Kerauden AUG 25 @ 7PM

Coming of age in the 1960s, John Wojtowicz took pride in being a pervert. His libido was excessive even by the libertine standards of the era, with multiple wives and lovers, both women and men.In August, 1972, he attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover’s sex-reassignment surgery. The attempted heist resulted in a fourteen-hour hostage situation that was broadcast on TV. Three years later, Pacino portrayed his character instigating the unforgettable crime on the big screen. The award-winning film had a profound influence on Wojtowicz, when he emerged from prison six years later, he became known as “The Dog.” Filmed over the course of a 10-year period by co-directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren, and interweaving extraordinary

archival footage on the robbery, 70’s era interviews and the early gay liberation movement in which “The Dog” played an active role, the documentary captures the many sides of John Wojtowicz’s larger-than-life persona: he is, by turns lover, husband, soldier, lover, activist, New Yorker, mama’s boy and bank robber.

Dog Day Afternoon USA 1975, 125 min, Dir: Sidney Lumet AUG 25 @ 9PM

When inexperienced criminal Sonny Wortzik (Al Pacino) leads a bank robbery in Brooklyn, things quickly go wrong, and a hostage situation develops. As Sonny and his accomplice, Sal Naturile (John Cazale), try desperately to remain in control, a media circus develops and the FBI arrives, creating even more tension. Gradually, Sonny’s surprising motivations behind the robbery are revealed, and his standoff with law enforcement moves toward its inevitable end. YOU DON’T KNOW JACK: A Celebration of Jack Nicholson’s Early Films

You Don’t Know Jack

Five Easy Pieces

You know Jack Nicholson, but do you remember his string of astonishing roles in the 1960’s and 1970’s? We toast Jack’s retirement, announced last year, with a look back at the artist in the full force of his youth. R.P. McMurphy, Wilbur Force, Buddusky, Robert Eroica Dupea, J.J. Gittes, and George Hanson. These are the 6 characters Jack plays in the 6 films we chose showcasing his career from 1960 to 1975. Nicholson holds the record for the highest number of Oscar nominations for a male actor: 12 (3 wins), including a unparalleled string of 5 for Best Actor from 1970 to 1976. Here are 5 of his digitally restored lead performances, plus a short but unforgettable role in Little Shop of Horrors. Happy Retirement Jack! One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest USA1975, 133 min, Dir: Milos Foreman JUL 11 @ 7PM, 12 @ 4PM, 13 @ 9:15PM

When Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. Music Docs A monthly series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Time Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR and Blackbyrd Myoozik.

Dead Venues Canada 2015, 60 min, Dirs: Mike Siek & Eden Munro JULY 16 @ 7PM

City landscapes are littered with fallen music venues of every shape and size. In Edmonton, some of the old buildings still stand tall, bricks cracking, paint peeling more with every year, while others are marked only by the condos that cover their graves. Dead Venues combines new interviews with archival live video, photos and music for an oral history of several shuttered venues and the communities that evolved around them.

Salad Days: A Decade of Punk from Washington, DC USA 2014, 90 min, Dir: Scott Crawford AUG 4 @ 7PM

It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records, booked their own shows - without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. Contextually it was a cultural watershed which predated the alternative music explosion of the 1990s (and the industry’s subsequent implosion). Thirty years later, DC’s original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth, the power of community and the strength of conviction.

Germany / USA / Canada 2006, 105 min, Dir: David R. Ellis JUL 14 @ 7PM

Is Samuel Jackson the new Michael Caine? Turkey Shoot patrons know the Michael Caine Hall of Shame, for actors who will take any work they are offered. Sir Michael is semiretired, so we propose Samuel Jackson to replace him. What better film than this, where Mr. Jackson brings the full range of his talent to a movie title that tells you everything you need to know. There’s a plane. There are snakes on it. Shot in Toronto, combining the high concept of airplane disaster movies and the squirminess of venomous reptiles was a stroke of genius that didn’t pay off at the box office. With live commentary!

Tetsuo, The Iron Man

Little Shop of Horrors

Tetsuo, The Iron Man is a fever dream of industrial-cyberpunk-body horror, a monument to the bizarre, and a beacon of underground oddity. Looking like the twisted metal baby of Lynch, Cronenberg, & Giger, Tetsuo is a landmark of extreme Japanese Cinema. It all starts when The Metal Fetishist gets hit by a car and exacts a strange and terrifying revenge on the driver, a lowly salaryman who begins to sprout scrap metal from deep inside his flesh. This film brought Tsukamoto to there forefront of cinema and marked him out as a director with unique and singular vision. To date there have been 2 sequels to Tetsuo the most recent of which came out in 2009. Join Bizarro on a trip through a metal hell.

Japan 1989, 67 min, Dir: Shin’ya Tsukamoto Japanese w/ Subtitles aug 12 @ 9:30PM

As soon as this movie came out earlier this year, we were curious to Shoot it. BDSM has never been so silly, prurient and misguided. The (originally) self-published novel was developed as Twilight fan fiction, featuring Edward and Bella. Twilight got the Turkey treatment a few years ago, so this is a nobrainer. Apparently the movie isn’t quite as bad as the book, but that’s not saying much. Shot in Vancouver, Fifty Shades makes us long for the erotic complexity of Nine And A Half Weeks. Will there be sequels? You better believe it. With live commentary, if we can get our ball gags off.

crime watch

Have you ever wondered what your favourite cinema’s fine staff watch when they’re not at work? From the front of house to behind the scenes, each month one Metro staff member will present their must see film!

Hudson Hawk USA 1991, 100 min, Dir: Michael Lehmann JULY 20 @ 7PM

This month we bid farewell to a friend, as Crime Watch comes to an end. From thriller to comedy and classic to contemporary, Crime Watch has offered a diverse and provocative glimpse into the cinematic criminal world. Curated by Laura O’Connor and Sam Sheplawy.

Ryn is a visual and performing artist that also works as one of Metro Cinema’s House Managers. She spends most of her time watching movies with her pet chinchilla. The way that Hudson Hawk was packaged, plus the timing of its release (shortly after Die Hard 2), led to its untimely box office demise. Audiences expected one thing and received something completely different: an absurd, surreal piece of work that’s one part action flick and one part Rocky and Bullwinkle (complete with concerted efforts at WORLD DOMINATION). It is a film that teaches you to let go of all expectations in your movie-watching experience. $5 MONDAY!

Wild At Heart USA 1990, 125 min, Dir.: David Lynch AUG 24 @ 7PM

Fia has been working at Metro for a little under a year and was pretty happy to be offered a staff pic. Her top picks each had a story and this is Wild at Heart’s: Fia was 6 years old, had pigtails and overalls and was ecstatic to go to the movies for the first time She and her mom walked from their house in Pasadena to an old theatre (now shut-down) that played children’s movies

every weekend to see The Wizard of Oz. Even though she left the theatre with a piece of gum stuck to her shoe and pee in her pants because of the flying monkeys, she was thrilled! This may have been the first time she actually had that sensation. Road movies do that for her so when she first saw Wild at Heart on a date she was affected. It was grimy, surreal, disgusting, erotic and thrilling all at the same time! The Wizard of Oz references didn’t hurt it either. Come see this demented cul-classic if only just for the ride.

Clue USA 1985, 94 min, Dir: Jonathan Lynn JULY 21 @ 7PM

Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick? How about Ms. Scarlet in the study with a gun? If you’re dying to find out who done it, it’s time to join us at the final screening in the Crime Watch series and watch the classic crime comedy, Clue. Based on the perennially popular Hasbro board game, Clue is not only the seminal film of the toy-tie-in genre, it is a darn fine film that twists the tropes of classic Christie-style parlour murder mysteries into a gleefully macabre crime comedy featuring a script by John Landis and some of the best character actors in the biz. Not only that, but in the true spirit of the game, the film was released with 3 different endings, and audiences never knew which they were going to get! How’s that for suspense? We thought that a film all about endings - humorous, murderous endings - was a fitting final installment in the Crime Watch film series. Thank you all for sharing the journey into the diverse heart of crime cinema over these past 2 years and 25 films. We hope we’ve whetted your appetite for crime films and inspired you to continue your exploration of the genre. We assure you, it’s much healthier than exploring the subject matter!

Saturday Morning All-YouCan-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party! World-Wide 1960 – 70s, 150 min, Curator: Kier-La Janisse JULY 11 @ 10AM

Remember Saturday mornings? Kids today may not realize the significance of the Saturday morning ritual, but once upon a time, we had to wait a whole week to get our cartoon fix, and when we got it, we tended to binge. In that gleefully gluttonous spirit, curator Kier-La Janisse presents a 3-hour trip down memory lane with a tribute to the eye-popping, brain-addling Saturday morning cartoons of yore, complete with a smorgasbord of delicious sugary cereals (and yes, we have soy too!)! You’ll see both faves and obscurities spanning the 60s through the 80s (and sometimes even earlier), all punctuated with vintage commercials and PSAs! The lineup is always a secret, but there will be sci-fi, sleuths, superheroes and all kinds of 2D silliness, so get ready for a sugar rush and an explosion of nostalgia all wrapped up in one candy-coated package. Adults: $14, Students/Seniors: $12, Children 12 & Under: $10 Admission includes cereal. Advance tickets available online at metrocinema.org No Metro passes – Only Silver Screen Passes Accepted. Heavily inspired by the life of exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin, Nirbashito is a fictionalized story of a writer banished from her home and forced to leave her cat behind, whom she thinks of as her child. “The separation of a mother and her daughter is similar to the separation of an exiled person from her motherland. My main focus was on that area,” says Churni Ganguly, writer/director and lead actress. The film won the Best Bengali film and best sound design awards at the 62nd National Film Awards in India.

Court India 2014, 120 min, Dir: Chaitanya Tamhane English, Marathi & Gujarati w/ English Subtitles JUL 18 @ 7PM

Following one indelible character, a free-spirited child in rural Bengal who matures into an adolescent urban student and finally a sensitive man of the world. These delicate masterworks—Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road), Aparajito (The Unvanquished), and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu)—based on two books by Bibhutibhusan Banerjee, were shot over the course of five years, and each stands on its own as a tender, visually radiant journey. They are among the most achingly beautiful, richly humane movies ever made—essential works for any film lover. (Janus films)

She loves her son very much and wants him to succeed, but she does not want to be left alone.
