Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders
Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

No Men Beyond This Point Canada 2015, 80 min, Dir: Mark Sawers APR 29 @ 7PM, MAY 1 @ 9:30PM, MAY 2 @ 9PM, MAY 4 @ 9:30PM
A smart, hilarious take on gender politics, Mark Sawers’ wry mockumentary envisions a world where women have become asexual and are no longer giving birth to males, and where the dwindling population of men are desperate to reclaim their place in the sun. As the men’s comically disorganized comeback flounders, and the end of humanity as we know it approaches, one couple’s actions will take on historic proportions. (Magali Simard, TIFF)
The Witch USA 2016, 92 min, Dir: Robert Eggers MAY 9 @ 9:30PM, MAY 10 @ 9:30PM, MAY 12 @ 9:30PM, MAY 15 @7PM
In this exquisitely made and terrifying new horror film, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family’s frightful unraveling in the New England wilderness circa 1630. “Eggers’ impressive debut feature walks a tricky line between disquieting ambiguity and full-bore supernatural horror” (Justin Chang, Variety)
45 Years UK 2015, 95 min, Dir: Andrew Haigh MAY 18 @ 9PM, MAY 21 @ 4PM, MAY 22 @ 2:30PM, MAY 23 @ 7PM
While preparing for their 45th anniversary, Kate and Geoff’s marriage is shaken with a discovery that calls into question the life they’ve built together. Screen legends Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay won Best Actress & Best Actor at the Berlinale for this emotional tour-de-force.
Anomalisa USA 2015, 90 min, Dir: Charlie Kaufman & Duke Johnson APR 29 @ 9PM, MAY 1 @ 1PM, MAY 2 @ 7PM, MAY 3 @ 9:15PM
Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) achieves further artistic greatness with this hilariously funny and horribly real animation about the unbearable loneliness of being. (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian) 6

League of Exotique Dancers Canada 2015, 90 min, Dir: Rama Rau MAY 20 @ 7PM, MAY 22 @ 6:45PM, MAY 23 @ 2PM, MAY 24 @ 9:30PM, MAY 26 @ 9:30PM
League of Exotique Dancers explores vintage Burlesque’s world of fun, frolic, and feathers, yet also turns the spotlight on the poverty, racism, and sexism that were rampant under all that glitter. “This is a must for anyone who cares about the art of burlesque and about the women who created and sustained it.” (Burlesque Beat)
High-Rise The Damned: Don’t You Wish We Were Dead USA 2015, 110 min. Dir: Wes Orshoski MAY 22 @ 4:30PM, MAY 23 @ 9PM, MAY 25 @ 9:30PM
The story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk: The Damned. Shot around the globe over three years, the film charts the band’s complex history and infighting. It captures the 35th anniversary world tour and finds some estranged former band members striking out on their own anniversary tour, while others battle cancer. The film includes appearances from Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash), Lemmy and members of Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Buzzcocks, and more.
UK 2016, 119 minutes, Dir: Ben Wheatley MAY 27 @ 7PM, MAY 28 @ 9:15, MAY 29 @ 2PM & 9:30PM, MAY 30 @ 9:30PM, MAY 31 @ 7PM, JUN 2 @ 9PM
High-Rise manages to be a work of towering insanity and a searing comment on the decadence of present-day London. Rarely is a period film so of the moment: Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of JG Ballard’s 1975 novel provides a wickedly funny take on urban desperation, isolation, meaningless sex, social jockeying and greedy grappling on the property ladder. (Kate Muir, The Times)

Asian Canadian Film Series May is Asian heritage month and I am delighted to be the curator of Metro Cinema’s first Asian Canadian film series. In a time when we are talking the whitewashing of Hollywood, and #Oscarssowhite, it is even more important to showcase Asian Canadian films and Asian-Canadian stories. As a person of mixed Asian descent, I grew up seeing very little of my extended family’s culture or history reflected on screen. It is my hope that this film series will introduce you to homegrown talent, educate you, make you laugh, scare you, and encourage you to talk about Asian Canadian history and identity. Special thanks to: Mari Sasano, Suzette Chan, Kathryn Lennon, Erin Fraser and Nathan Smith. Curated by Alexis Kienlen

One Big Hapa Family Canada 2010, 85 min. Dir: Jeff Chiba Stearns MAY 4 @ 7PM
After a realization at a family reunion, half Japanese-Canadian filmmaker, Jeff Chiba Stearns, embarks on a journey of self-discovery to find out why everyone in his family married inter-racially after his grandparents’ generation. This feature live action and animated documentary explores why almost 100% of all Japanese-Canadians marry inter-racially, the highest out of any other ethnicity in Canada, and how their children perceive their unique multiracial identities. One Big Hapa Family challenges our perceptions of purity and makes us question if mixing is the end of multiculturalism as we know it. Screens with short films:
Yellow Sticky Notes Canada 2007, 6 min, Dir: Jeff Chiba Stearns
Samurai Swing Canada 1999, 19 min, Dir: Mieko Ouchi

Jade Li (Sandra Oh), a young Chinese-Canadian, wants to become an actress without upsetting her extremely traditional parents. It’s a balancing act that Jade is finding difficult to achieve. Speaking English, wearing western clothes and going out with non-Asian guys, Jade leads a secret life when she leaves her stuffy but warm domestic life each day. Naturally, something has to give sooner or later and the facade of the perfect Chinese daughter soon begins to slip.
Mommie Dearest, best-selling memoir turned motion picture, depicts the abusive and traumatic adoptive upbringing of Christina Crawford at the hands of her mother, screen queen Joan Crawford. The House of Homo-Cidal is a cult film-inspired drag troupe hell bent on serving cinema, female impersonation and debauchery in one nasty bundle. This horde of devious mavens will provide entertainment before, during, and after your movie-viewing experience, twisting your minds for the better and hopefully the worst! 18+ licensed event, no minors

Mississippi Mermaid Staff Pics: Maggie France/Italy 1969, 123 min. Dir: François Truffaut French with subtitles MAY 16 @ 7PM
“I’m learning what love is, Louis. It’s painful.” Maggie Hardy curates Metro Bizarro, has done a little bit of everything (from volunteering to projection) at the Metro and has been a Silver Screen member since 2006.
Mississippi Mermaid is an often overlooked masterpiece from director Francois Truffaut. Starring Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo (Breathless), a wealthy tobacco plantation owner falls in love with a girl through letters. When they decide to marry things don’t go as planned. A darkly perverse romance and a stunning example of chronologically shot film. Maggie first saw Mississippi Mermaid at Metro in 2010 and fell in love with the works of Truffaut.
The Thing Staff Pics: Nic USA 1982, 109 min, Dir: John Carpenter JUN 13 @ 7PM
Nic is a front of house manager at Metro and recent grad of the film studies program at the U of A. Also an adamant lover of coffee. The Thing is a prime example of Nic’s favourite actordirector combo. John Carpenter and Kurt Rusell have produced several classic films, but none are quite as chilling as this sci-fi horror classic. Carpenter is not only Nic’s favourite filmmaker, but one of his favourite musicians as well. It’s the first week of winter in 1982. An American Research Base is greeted by an alien force that can assimilate anything it touches. It’s up to the members to stay alive, and be sure of who is human, and who has become one of the Things.

Truck driver Jack Burton arrives in Chinatown, San Francisco, and meets up with his friend Wang Chi. A kidnapping and fights with street gangs lead them to an encounter with the powerful and evil sorcerer called David Lo Pan. Jack and his friends embark on a great adventure in the underground of Chinatown, where they face a world of magic, monsters, and martial arts.
Nada (Roddy Piper), a down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is: humanity bombarded by media and government with messages like “No Imagination” and “Submit to Authority.” Even scarier is that some normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued. metrocinema.org

The Last Witch Hunter USA/China/Canada 2015, 106 min, Dir: Breck Eisner MAY 19 @ 9:30PM
Guess what? Witches still live amongst us! Kaulder (Vin Diesel) is cursed with immortality and fighting witches who want to destroy humanity with the Black Plague, we’re not sure why. There is so much for us at Turkey Shoot to love; an ancient brotherhood of priests lead by Elijah Wood, Vin Diesel with and without hair, and a late-career entry into the Sir Michael Caine Hall of Shame. Vin Diesel is a long-time Dungeons & Dragons player and developed this occult thriller based on his game character. Awesome. With live commentary from James Hamilton and Cat Walsh, trivia and prizes! 18+ licensed, no minors.
Beauty and the Beast
Gods of Egypt USA/Australia 2016, 127 min. Dir: Alex Proyas JUN 16 @ 9:30PM
This overblown $140 million Sword & Sandal throwback crashed and burned. Gerard Butler plays it straight as Set, god of something-orother. He gleams in the sun a lot, and then the battle for eternity begins. There are pyramids,
DEDfest
and lots of half-dressed beautiful people wandering in the desert. Director Alex Proyas was born in Egypt, so should know better, but forget logic or fact. Egypt is in North Africa, but ancient Egypt is populated by white Scotsmen, Australians and Danes. It’s all ridiculous and offensive and quite fun. With live commentary from Dave Clarke, James Hamilton and Cat Walsh, trivia and prizes! 18+ licensed, no minors.

Lisztomania
Beauty and the Beast France 1946, 93 min, Dir: Jean Cocteau French with subtitles Newly Restored Version JUN 24 @ 7PM, JUN 25 @ 9:30PM, JUN 26 @ 2PM
Jean Cocteau’s sublime adaptation of Mme. Leprince de Beaumont’s fairy-tale masterpiece. The pure love of a beautiful girl melts the heart of a feral but gentle beast in this landmark of motion picture fantasy, with unforgettably romantic performances by Jean Marais and Josette Day. The spectacular visions of enchantment, desire, and death in this film have become timeless icons of cinematic wonder.
1950’s-1990’s, 89 min. Dir:Various MAY 20 @ 9:30PM

Cut and curated by the masters of shlock, Cody Cook and Greg Sonier, Trailer Orgy is 89 minutes of grindhouse trailers from around the world. UK 1975, 103 min. Dir: Ken Russell JUN 15 @ 7PM
Metro Bizarro is proud to present Ken Russell’s fever dream of the life of Franz Liszt, starring Roger Daltry (The Who). Liszt is faced with celebrity, a tumultuous relationship with fellow composer Richard Wagner (Paul Nicholas), nazi robots, space ships, and selling his soul to devil. Russell’s most inventive and trippy film, Lisztomania is part Amadeus meets Caligula, part decadent rock opera, and part pseudo-pornographic art film – an amazing film experience. metrocinema.org

Longing for home, Jules escapes deeper and deeper into her spirit world while Karly realizes that her sister is becoming increasingly ill as a result of the toxins in their immediate environment. It was “money, baby” back in 1996, and it’s still money today. Swingers, set in Hollywood right around the time real life audiences first met Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, is a cult classic following the almost famous. Join us at Metro Cinema at 6:30PM for beer and wine and scotch (“Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, perhaps... maybe a Glengaa... any Glen”) and a few quick thoughts from Ryan Jespersen, and a 7PM screening of Swingers. Ryan Jespersen talks news, politics, and pop culture as host of The Ryan Jespersen Show on 630 CHED, weekdays from 9am-noon. His not-soHollywood nightlife is split between home game hosting duties for the Edmonton Oilers, and being proud daddy to almost-one-year-old Wyatt Rudy (who is so money...but he doesn’t even know it).
