September always feels like the beginning of something. Symphonies, schools and theatres launch in September and Metro has decided to embrace this by unveiling our “season” as part of our celebrations around the Garneau Theatre’s 75th birthday. As a result we spend September looking both backwards and forwards: toasting 75 years of a beautiful cinema and looking forward to a year of fantastic film. In celebration of this duality, we named our four day extravaganza Past Forward: The Garneau Theatre at 75. You will see references to it throughout the guide, but Metro is about more than one weekend and things never stop happening here. The best way to see the many different things that Metro has to offer is to become a Silver Screen passholder. To encourage you we’ve put together a birthday weekend sale: buy a Silver Screen during Past Forward and it is good for two instead of one ticket per screening for the remainder of September. Show your pass at concession during the rest of September and we’ll also give you a medium popcorn on us. Already have a Silver Screen pass? Get the same perks! Renew during Past Forward and we’ll add twelve months to the life of your existing pass. Past Forward is also the start of a few things that have been on hiatus. We are kicking off a new season of our Thank Garneau It’s Film (or TGIF for short), Friday night Film Club, as part of Past Forward. While normally reserved for New Releases opening on Friday at 7, we didn’t want our favourite movie club to be left out of the celebrations, so we are going to discuss the ongoing social relevance of the 1940’s Oscar Winner The Philadelphia Story. The tea and cookies and conversation will still be what we’ve all come to expect from TGIF. If you’ve never been, you should come check it out! If you can’t come to The Philadelphia Story, look for the TGIF tag in the program guide for relevant screenings.

Adult Six Pack $60 Student/Senior Six Pack $50 Silver Screen $250

In case you don’t get enough variety during Past Forward, Metro will be celebrating Alberta Culture Days on the following weekend, and we’ll be chock full of home grown film fun.

We also have the inaugural Rainbow Visions Festival (from the visionaries behind Global Visions, now NORTHWESTFEST) and genre film fans should be gearing up for DEDfest in October, but can whet their appetites with Cooties in September. We have so many rentals about so many different things, from Nintendo to breast milk, from rock climbing to election night coverage. September and October embrace so many different facets of what makes Edmonton a great and diverse city. The Garneau Theatre at 75 is still truly a Community Cinema.

Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders

Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

THE GARNEAU

THEATRE AT 75 Edmonton has been associated with the boom and bust cycle even before oil was discovered in 1947. In 1940, the beginnings of a boom were underway, thanks in part to WWII and the construction of the Alaskan highway and emergence of Edmonton’s identity as Gateway to the North. This led to rapid population growth which allowed the founder of the Garneau, Bill Wilson, to capitalize. THE SUBURBAN THEATRE Bill Wilson had grown up in a Winnipeg Famous Players movie theatre. When he was laid off from an engineering job in Edmonton, he returned to his first love, and started the Suburban Theatres chain in 1938. That year, he built the Roxy Theatre and the Garneau followed in 1940. Except for a few brief absences, Wilson continued to run the Garneau from a tiny office in the basement until he retired as manager in 1971. From the start, the theatre (designed by William Blakey, who was also responsible for the Masonic Temple and the Roxy) was meant to fulfill a number of roles. But through it all, serving the community has reigned supreme. Various operators have cobbled together projection, sound, lighting and concession equipment from theatres as far away as Coeur d’Alene. In the current incarnation, Metro Cinema has inherited gear from a dozen theatres. We truly are a community cinema. 75 YEARS OF SCREEN MAGIC Metro is only the most recent in a long series of fine operators that started with Suburban Theatres. In recent history, Magic lantern Theatres took over operations at the Garneau in 1991, initially as a 6

metrocinema.org

discount movie house, then showing new movies in 1996. Developer John Day purchased the building in 2007, with Metro Cinema moving in in 2011. In our brief time here, Metro has upgraded many of the facility’s systems and restored some earlier flourishes to the design. We have started new traditions (like our Saturday Morning All You Can Eat Cereal Cartoon Party, featured during Past Forward), extended others (like Hallowe’en screenings of Rocky Horror Picture Show), and brought Metro’s own eclectic tastes to the programming. For 75 years, our distinctive modernist marquee has greeted everyone travelling the high level bridge, and joined the worlds of the university and Strathcona. In 2009, the Garneau block façade as a whole was declared a historic site. Now, in a time when movie theatres are burning down and being bulldozed, Metro is working hard to stay true to the origins of a Community Cinema by programing the Garneau with a bold mix of new and old, seeing globally but responding to local needs and interests, and partnering with more than 50 charities and businesses each year. We are honoured to program this beautiful old theatre, and are always delighted to hear the many stories from patrons, staff and filmmakers of past years. In honour of the momentus occasion, we want to capture your Garneau Theatre stories and share them with the community at large as part of our Birthday celebrations. Please send us your favourite, your first, your funniest Garneau story at garneau@metrocinema.org, and we’ll send you an invite to Flash Bash, the Sept 19th centerpiece of our Past Forward celebrations.

PAST FORWARD – SEPT 18-21 What is Past Forward? Well, in celebration of the Garneau’s 75 years, Metro is bringing together great movies of 1940 with some of the most acclaimed movies of our time. Check out all the details in the special events section. In a nutshell, we begin on Friday with the classic romantic comedy The Philadelphia Story: the film features Cary Grant, katharine Hepburn and James Stewart, but the real star is the Oscar-winning screenplay, which balances wit and farce with unparalleled grace, and stick around after the movie for the season launch of TGIF: Thank Garneau It’s Film, Metro’s drop in Film club. The showcase of great movies from 1940 and today continues through to Monday night’s screening What We Do In The Shadows. Along the way, we’ll feature dark and funny, familiar and strange, family friendly and…not at all friendly. Saturday night, we are throwing the Garneau a birthday party with Sci-Fi theme. Flash Bash combines a tribute to the classic movie serials of the past, featuring excerpts from the original Flash Gordon series, sneak peeks at the series and special features of Metro’s year ahead, and a boatload of great offers in our silent auction. This birthday party is the epitome of the duality of Past Forward, as we celebrate 75 years in part by looking forward to a fabulous season ahead. On Sunday afternoon, you can glimpse the Garneau’s past at the Garneau Ghost Tour. See and feel the inner workings of how the Garneau has worked in past generations, what we’re doing right now, and what we envision for the

theatre in years to come. Discuss the Garneau legacy with historian Tim Marriott and share in some of the spooky and fascinating stories, keep your eyes peeled for ghost sightings as they are hotly debated around here. Metro is different from traditional cinemas in so many ways, not the least of which is we are a registered charity rather than a for profit entity. The community of Metro helps shape so much of who we are, and how we operate. We are so much more than just the films on the screen and on Sunday night we want to honour that. We want to say thanks while also providing you with the opportunity to give something back. A special screening of The usual Suspects recognizes our valued supporters (who picked that film) and is a Pay What You Can Screening: pay nothing if you can’t afford it and please enjoy the film, but if you can please consider donating more. Asking for help is hard, and in the changing landscape of cinema, Metro cannot do it alone. BEYOND 75 While we love the heritage and stories of this place, what really excites me is its future. This is an exciting neighbourhood, and a time when traditional film, contemporary cinema, live performance and community events all come together in unexpected ways. The next reel of the Garneau’s epic is just sliding onto the projector. Come tell that story with us. David Cheoros Executive Director

The students of Grusin High love him - it might be because he drinks and smokes with them. But this is just the beginning of his downward spiral. When he meets Jabrielle, a teenaged outcast who’s just as screwed up as he is, he might learn that in the company of teenagers, sometimes you can go too far, especially when it comes to committing a ridiculous crime.

How To Change The World draws on interviews with the key players and hitherto unseen archive footage which brings these extraordinary characters and their intense, sometimes eccentric and often dangerous world alive. Since 1958, Michael Bond’s A Bear Called Paddington and its sequels have sold more than thirty-five million copies, and the hero has assumed many forms in many media. In his most recent cinematic styling, Paddington, armed with little more than impeccable manners and marmalade, is dispatched by his Aunt Lucy from “Darkest Peru” to London, where he is taken in by the Browns. There is a definite dash of Mary Poppins in this story, the idea being that Families are a puzzle, and it is the job of a Paddington, or a Mary, to solve them. (The New Yorker)

turkey shoot A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted by Dave Clarke and featuring live comedic commentary. All Turkey Shoot Shows are 18+ Licenced, No Minors

“Two of L.A.’s top rival cops are going to have to work together… even if it kills them.” Well, we live in hope. Meet Raymond Tango (Sylvester Stallone), a flashy Armani-suited super-cop, and Gabriel Cash (Kurt Russell), a rough and ready bro who lives life to the full. Is it a parody? A gritty thriller? A sensitive buddy movie? Smouldering chemistry between the stars, will give the Bell of Unintentional Homoeroticism a workout. Kurt Russell in drag, Jack Palance as an insane villain and Teri Hatcher as Kiki, a drum-playing stripper. Plus cult favourites Michael J. Pollard, Robert (Maniac Cop) Z’Dar and Brion James make this a must-see.

In 1987, Cosby was at the peak of fame as TV dad and Jell-O pitchman. That wasn’t enough, hence this lump of cinematic excrement, in which Leonard has to vanquish an evil force that brainwashes small animals into killing people. Where else can you see a rainbow trout eating a CIA agent alive? This inept, unfunny spy comedy was co-written by and stars Cosby; oddly on release, he urged a boycott to protect his reputation, and purchased the television rights so it would never appear. Where are Parts 1-5? Thankfully unfilmed. Then, as now, the big question is, “What was Bill Cosby thinking?”

Yee-haw! Metro Bizarro is proud to present one of the first and finest Southern slasher flicks: H.G. Lewis’ Two Thousand Maniacs! Gruesomely stained in blood colour, this is one of the triumphs of Lewis’ career. Starring 1963 Playboy Playmate Connie Mason, Maniacs is the second in the Blood Trilogy (of which Bizarro has previously played Blood Feast). GATEWAY TO CINEMA A monthly film series Presented by The Gateway, the official student newspaper of the University of Alberta. Admission is free for students, U of A + all others with valid ID.

Halloween USA 1978, 91 min, Dir: John Carpenter OCT 28 @ 7PM

On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-yearold sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith’s Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.

cult cinema A monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff Noel. In October we bid farewell to the kooky collection known as Cult Cinema

Akira Japan 1988, 124 min, Dir: Katsuhiro Otomo Japanese w/ subtitles Sept 29 @ 9PM

One of the best-known examples of contemporary Japanese animation, this cyberpunk adventure takes place in the post-apocalyptic city of Neo-Tokyo. A teen-age boy is exposed to a mysterious energy source and develops telekinetic powers that place him at the center of a conflict that may destroy the world.

Donnie Darko USA 2001, 113 min, Dir: Richard Kelly OCT 27 @ 7PM

Donnie Darko is a moody fable of time travel and the dissociation of the teenager. Or, possibly, it’s the story of a young man struggling with mental illness. Either way, Frank is a much cooler, darker six foot invisible rabbit than Harvey ever was, and Jake Gyllenhall is unforgettable. “Like gathering storm clouds, Donnie Darko creates an atmosphere of eerie calm and mounting menace -- stands as one of the most exceptional movies of 2001.” (LA Times)

Based on Otomo’s graphic novels of the same name, Akira paved the way for a wave of anime fandom worldwide, and combined spectacular animation with a moving and surprisingly personal story.

USA 207, 86 min, Dir: Michael Davis OCT 5 @ 7pm

After saving a newborn infant from assassins, carrot-crunching gunman Mr. Smith (Clive Owen) teams up with a prostitute named DQ (Monica Bellucci) to protect the baby from further attacks. With hitman Hertz (Paul Giamatti) hot on their trail, Smith and DQ uncover a dying senator’s plot to harvest bone marrow from babies just like the one in their arms. Nostalgia does play a large part in why Marcia loves action movies. Growing up, there was one TV and VCR so viewing time in her household was a hot commodity! Any chance she could, Marcia, along with her Dad would whip up a pot of macaroni and tomato soup and settle in for an afternoon of Tommy Lee and Schwarzenegger. An action hero single handedly taking down an army of men, overkill on the explosions and gunfights, she loves it all! Shoot em Up is all that and a bag of carrots.

With and Without You: A Father’s Suicide, a Family’s Journey Canada 2010, 93 min SEPT 10 @ 7PM

In 2003, the Beaudry family left their comfortable middle-class home to backpack across the world. A year after their adventure, Samuel Beaudry took another journey—one that left his wife, Maryse Chartrand, with shocking questions. How could a life-loving person take his own life? When mourning exhausts itself, what comes next? Can a family survive suicide? This documentary, originally planned as a record of the global trek, is Maryse’s quest to understand her husband’s decision and grow past it. Exploring issues of masculinity, male depression, and family dynamics, the film depicts the tragically belated discovery of one man’s hidden anguish— and one woman’s hard-won emotional healing.

THE MASk YOu lIVE IN

The Mask You Live in SEPT 13 @ 3:30PM

The Mask You live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating North America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the “boy crisis” and tactics to combat it 16

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret USA 2014 85 min Dir: Kip Anderson, Keegan Kuhn

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged. As Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist. - from http://www.cowspiracy.com
