Cloud Atlas USA 2012, 172 min, 35mm, Dir: Tom Twyker, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski 4, 5, 6 @ 8:45PM, 5 @ 3:45PM, 7 @ 6:30PM
David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas was a landmark literary event of the past decade, a globe-spanning, time-tripping puzzle-novel, whose cavalier unruliness belied its intricate design. It was one of those books that instantly elicited the adjective “unfilmable” - but to visionary filmmakers Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix), that was less caution than challenge. Spanning continents and millennia and borne aloft on the talents of a top-shelf cast - including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving and Jim Broadbent this collaboration on Cloud Atlas transforms Mitchell’s dazzling novel into a mind-bending, genre-hopping cinematic experience. No movie this year more deserves the label “epic.” ... Free will is questioned, karma rules, adventure abounds - and the visuals are astonishing. Many films have sought to impart the message that “we are all connected,” but none has done so with the scale and exhilaration of Cloud Atlas. (Cameron Bailey, TIFF)
USA/ UK 1979, 117 min, 35mm, Dir: Ridley Scott 6 @ 2PM
Alien’s plot is not a convoluted one but is linear and smart: a group of blue collar space “truckers” investigate an “alien” distress beacon on an unknown planet, pick up more than they bargain for and terror ensues. But what elevates Alien above B-movie schlock, which it unquestionably draws its roots from, is the level of artistry, design, suspense, horror and shock that Scott captured. It’s all in the details, and here his team, including noted surrealistic artist H.R. Giger, who is credited with creating the Alien’s biomechanical look, spared no effort in going for either a totally alien or a completely human, “used future” look, eschewing the stereotypically antiseptic space movies of the time (Star Wars), and showing the contrast between the two in their wonderfully complex and intricate sets. (TIFF)
Aliens Joy Division UK 2007, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Grant Gee 8 @ 7PM
Filmmaker Grant Gee speaks with now-deceased Factory Records founder Tony Wilson; legendary producer Martin Hannett; surviving Joy Division band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Peter Hook; along with the late Ian Curtis’s Belgian lover Annik Honoré in order to offer a vivid snapshot of a fleeting moment in time when Manchester’s Joy Division changed the face of modern music. Born in the bleak landscape of industrialized Manchester - a city that once thrived as a center of 19th century manufacturing but was far removed from its halcyon days by the time the band was founded - Joy Division combined the energy of punk rock with the anger and alienation of their generation to stunning effect.
USA/ UK 1986, 137 min, 35mm, Dir: James Cameron 6 @ 4:15PM
The bitch is back, some 50 years later. The popular sequel amounts to non-stop, ravaging combat in space. Contact with a colony on another planet has mysteriously stopped. Fresh from deep space sleep, Ripley and a slew of pulsar-equipped Marines return to confront the mother alien at her nest, which is also inhabited by a whole bunch of the nasty critters spewing for a fight. Something’s gotta give, and the Oscar-winning special effects are especially inventive (and messy) in the alien demise department. ...Ripley discovers maternal instincts lurking within her space suit while looking after a young girl, the lone survivor of the colony. (Videohound) 1 FILM: REGULAR ADMISSION, BOTH FILMS: $14.
Mostly Water: Metro Shorts Canada 2012, Digital, Dir: Various 10 @ 9PM
Amarcord Italy/ France 1973, 123 min, Digital, Dir: Federico Fellini, Italian with subtitles 9 @ 7PM
Fellini delighted audiences with this funny and affectionate fantasy vision of his boyhood, the fourth of the legendary director’s works to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film.... Amarcord (the title is Romagnese dialect for “I remember”) is set in Fellini’s hometown of Rimini during the Fascist period. It follows the comic coming-of-age adventures of Titta, a teenaged Fellini surrogate making his way through the minefields of religion, love, sex, politics, puberty and family life. An inspired mix of memory, melancholia, imagination, bawdy humour and nostalgia, the film is set to a memorable musical score by Nino Rota, a favourite Fellini collaborator. (Jim Sinclair, Pacific Cinematheque) Presented in partnership with The Edmonton Opera to tie in with their performance of Les Contes D’Hoffmann. EDMONTONOPERA.COM
Metro Shorts is a chance for filmmakers to have their work professionally screened and adjudicated by industry members. All films shown will receive a CARFAC screening fee; in addition, a cash prize is given to the winner of each event. The winner is chosen by the audience who act as studio executives, voting to decide which short is good enough to win it all. Hosted by Mostly Water and produced by Metro Cinema. All videos must be under 5 mins and adhere to copyright standards. Submission deadline: January 4. FOR DETAILS: INFO@MOSTLYWATERTHEATRE. COM OR 780 935 6532.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 USA 1986, 89 min, 35mm, Dir: Tobe Hooper 11 @ 11PM
It’s a brand new year and DEDfest is excited to start it off with a buzz! We’re proud to screen the one, true sequel to the original masterpiece, directed by the man himself! For a decade, Texas Ranger Lefty Enright has sought to avenge the brutal murder of his kin by the cannibalistic Sawyer family. With the help of a radio DJ Lefty finds his way to the Sawyers’ underground butcher shop, where a battle of epic proportions soon rages! Starring the great Dennis Hopper, in one of the most deliciously crazed performances of his career, and featuring some of the most blood-splattering special effects ever done by Tom Savini. This darkly humorous twisted tale will be a blast to witness on the big screen!
Summer, 1980. Barbara, (Nina Hoss) is a doctor who has applied for an exit visa from the GDR (East Germany). Now, as punishment, she has been transferred from Berlin to a small hospital out in the country, far from everything. Working as a pediatric surgeon under her new boss, she is attentive when it comes to the patients, but quite distanced toward her colleagues. Her future, she feels, will begin later. But as the day of her planned escape quickly approaches, Barbara starts to lose control. Over herself, her plans, over love. “Petzold creates a brilliantly incisive study of what becomes of human nature when totalitarian states weave suspicion into the fabric of everyday life.” (Dimitri Eipides, TIFF)

TURKEY SHOOT/// A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted live by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page (with special sarcastic guests).
The Waiting Room USA 2012, 81 min, Digital, Dir: Peter Nicks 11, 13, 15 @ 9:15PM, 12, 14 @ 7PM, 13 @ 3:15PM
The Waiting Room uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. The film - using a blend of cinema verité and characters’ voiceover - offers a raw, intimate, and even uplifting look at how patients, staff and caregivers each cope with disease, bureaucracy and hard choices. Young victims of gun violence take their turn alongside artists and small business owners who lack insurance. Steel workers, taxi cab drivers and international asylum seekers crowd the halls. The film weaves the stories of several patients, as well as the hospital staff charged with caring for them, as they cope with the complexity of the nation’s public health care system, while weathering the storm of a national recession.
Inglorious Basterds USA 2009, 153 min, 35mm, Dir: Quentin Tarantino 16 @ 7PM
In Tarantino’s alternate-history take on World War II, Brad Pitt plays Aldo Raine, the commander of a squad of Jewish-American soldiers on a covert operation in Nazi-Occupied France. Their mission -- to strike fear into the hearts of German soldiers by not just killing as many as possible, but collecting their scalps. When their story collides with that of Shoshanna Deryfus (Menalie Laurent), a french Jew who survived the execution of her family at the hands of the SS Colonel Hans Landa (an Oscar winning performance by Christoph Waltz), at a movie theatre in Paris, they collectively find themselves with an opportunity to end the War that is too good to pass up. Presented by The Gateway, the official student newspaper at the University of Alberta. FREE ADMISSION FOR STUDENTS WITH VALID ID
Troll 2 USA 1990, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Claudio Fragasso 17 @ 9:30PM
OK, OK, we give! The Turkey Shoot Choir has stormed the bridge to demand Troll 2, the aesthetically challenged classic about a small town of human eating goblins disguised as humans. That’s right, goblins. There is not one troll in Troll 2. No, we don’t know how the goblins resist eating each other while disguised as humans. Yes, we realize that a dentist is cast in the leading role. Not an actor playing a dentist; rather, a dentist playing an actor. Frankly, we wonder if a trip to the dentist might be more desirable…

Violeta Went to Heaven (Violeta se fue a los Cielos) Chile 2011, 110 min, Digital, Dir: Andrés Wood 19 @ 7PM (Reception @ 6:15PM) Spanish & French with subtitles
Like a Chilean Edith Piaf or Bob Dylan, Violeta Parra was a folksinger and pop culture icon whose songs, like “Gracias a la Vida,” expressed the soul of her nation and protested social injustice. Violeta Went to Heaven tells Parra’s extraordinary story, tracing her evolution from impoverished child to international sensation to Chile’s national hero, while capturing the swirling intensity of her inner contradictions, fallibilities, and passions. Director Andrés Wood …evocatively interweaves key set pieces from Parra’s life - her humble family roots, her Paris foray as a celebrated visual artist, her travels through Chile to preserve disappearing traditional culture, her tenuous hold on motherhood, and her tumultuous love life. And then there’s the music. Violeta’s heart-wrenching, indelible songs permeate this film, and they will penetrate the viewer’s soul. (Sundance Film Festival)

And finally in January, Science in the Cinema have selected The Third Man as their film this month, and we’ll be holding it over for some encores. So if you missed it when we screened it at Zeidler Hall, here’s a rare chance to see it in all its zithery glory.
We’ve also got some strong documentaries coming up, including The Waiting Room, a riveting film about a day in the life of busy emergency room in Oakland. We’re also partnering with Amnesty International to screen The Invisible War, about the epidemic of rape within the US armed forces.
We’re also proud to play host to Cine Chile 2012, the Festival of Contemporary Chilean Cinema in Canada; they’ve been screening Chileno films in Vancouver for many years, and we’ll be hosting them for the first time this January.
We’re delighted to kick off 2013 with Kim Nguyen’s Rebelle, anchored by a stellar performance from 15-year-old Congolese actress Rachel Mwanza, who has already won multiple Best Actress awards, including from both Tribeca and the Berlinale.

UK 2012, 89 min, Digital, Dir: Luis Prieto 18, 21 @ 9PM, 19 @ 2PM, 20, 23 @ 9:30PM
As edgy and explosive as Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 cult classic, this English language remake tells the story of a week in the life of Frank, a big time drug pusher in London. Frank’s life is a funfilled roller coaster of a ride that soon spins out of control. Friendships start to vanish and there is no longer room for love within his life, and violence takes over. Danger and chaos are all around and he becomes a man trapped in his own world. Eventually Frank is left with no one to turn to and nowhere to go, becoming a man paralysed with the fear of knowing that there is no way of preventing his inevitable fate. Fast-paced, visually striking, witty and with some of acting’s finest talents, Pusher will have you gripped from beginning to end.

Sin City USA 2005, 124 min, Digital, Dir: Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller 22 @ 7PM
Basin City isn’t quite hell on earth just yet, but it’ll do in a pinch. In this ultraviolent hardboiled pastiche, a motley crew of murderers, prostitutes and thieves go about their business in the most exaggerated ways possible. Three stories from Frank Miller’s acclaimed neo-noir series are represented: Marv (Mickey Rourke) stars as a hopeless hard case on a mission of revenge in “The Hard Goodbye.” In “That Yellow Bastard,” Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is the archetypal cop about to retire who comes up against a crime so terrible that he’ll devote the rest of his life to solving it. Finally, Dwight (Clive Owen) teams up with the ladies of the night as a mad dog cop stalks the streets in “The Big Fat Kill”.
Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime - and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception, and murder. Thanks to brilliant performances by Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles; Anton Karas’s evocative zither score; Graham Greene’s razor-sharp dialogue; Robert Krasker’s dramatic use of light and shadow, The Third Man, directed by the inimitable Carol Reed, only grows in stature as the years pass. (Criterion Collection) Dr. Sunita Vohra, Director of the Complementary and Alternative Research and Education (CARE) Program for Integrative Health and Healing at the Stollery Children’s Hospital will introduce, and after the film, will talk about medication safety - prescription and complementary/ alternative and host a Q & A. ADMISSION IS FREE AND INCLUDES A SMALL POPCORN. ENCORE SCREENINGS: 26 @ 4:15PM, 27 @ 1PM, 27, 30 @ 7PM (REGULAR ADMISSION).

A funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of America’s most important artists, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee, Wayne started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently, his word paintings, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings, have made him a darling of the fine art world. Beauty Is Embarrassing chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious, biographical one-man show. House (Hausu) Japan 1977, 87 min, Digital, Dir: Nobuhiko Obayashi Japanese with subtitles 25 @ 11:15PM, 28 @ 7PM
How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 movie House? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby - Doo as directed by Dario Argento? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home, only to come face to face with evil spirits, bloodthirsty pianos, and a demonic housecat. Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, House seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet. Or perhaps the mind of a child: the director fashioned the script after the eccentric musings of his eleven-year-old daughter, then employed all the tricks in his analog arsenal to make them a visually astonishing, raucous reality... a bona fide cult classic in the making, House is one of the most exciting genre discoveries in years. (Janus Films)
USA 1997, 154 min, 35mm, Dir: Quentin Tarantino 29 @ 9PM
Tarantino followed up the world-conquering success of Pulp Fiction with this relatively restrained adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch, and produced what may be his most mature and understated work, a crime based character study about getting older. Already well known as a career - resurrector, Tarantino cast blaxploitation icon Pam Grier as Jackie Brown, a worn down flight attendant who is busted for delivering money for gun runner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), and then has to scheme with the ATF and her bail bondsman Max Cherry (an also resurrected and Oscar nominated Robert Forster) to keep herself alive and out of prison.

The Paperboy USA 2012, 107 min, Digital, Dir: Lee Daniels 25, 27, 28, 30 @ 9PM, 26 @ 2PM, 26, 31 @ 7PM
A sexually and racially charged film noir from Academy Award Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels ( Precious ), The Paperboy takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) and his partner Yardley chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward’s younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) and sultry death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), the pair tries to prove violent swamp-dweller Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff. Based on the provocative bestselling novel by Pete Dexter, The Paperboy peels back a sleepy small town’s decadesold façade of Southern gentility to reveal a quagmire of evil as dark as a Florida bayou.
