January 2014 SCHEDULE Provincial Archives Pre-show/// For January, the PAA invites you to embrace winter with clips featuring several of the season’s most beloved activities. These clips are taken from home movies and educational short films housed at the Provincial Archives of Alberta and include winter sports such as hockey, figure skating, skiing, and ski jumping as well as clips taken at the Banff Winter Carnival in the 1940s.

The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology UK/ Ireland 2012, 136 min, Digital, Dir: Sophie Fiennes 3 @ 6:45PM, 4 & 7 @ 9:30PM, 5 @ 1:30PM & 6:45PM

Philosopher, academic superstar and worldclass cinematic connoisseur Slavoj Zizek never fails to be wildly entertaining and intellectually provocative. Reuniting with director Sophie Fiennes for this sequel to their three-part The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema - in which Zizek riffed off film clips and interpreted them through a psychoanalytic lens - The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology turns Zizek’s penetrating insights to the ideological implications, both overt and hidden, contained within films (whether popular, art or propagandistic), and traces connections to our current times. Dizzily bouncing from one film and one idea to the next, Zizek offers highspeed riffs on The Searchers, Jaws, Triumph of the Will, Titanic, M*A*S*H, and The Sound Of Music as he clicks through capitalism, fascism, consumerism, Stalinism, religion and more, while Fiennes masterfully weaves his voice into film clips and physically inserts him into recreations of famous movie sets. (TIFF)

The Room USA 2003, 99 min, 35mm, Dir: Tommy Wiseau 3 @ 11:30PM

Not to fear, it’s back! The ever popular monthly screening of Tommy Wiseau’s masterpiece returns; the film that’s widely agreed to be the “Citizen Kane of bad movies.” You’re my favourite customer! Thanks a lot! Bye. Audience participation is encouraged. Please respect the theatre and fellow patrons and refrain from shouting out profane language.

Music Docs/// A monthly film series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR and Blackbyrd Myoozik.

CBGB USA 2013, 101 min, Digital, Dir: Randall Miller 3, 5, 9 @ 9:30PM, 4 @ 4:30PM, 6 @ 7PM

In 1973, irrepressible Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman) borrowed money to buy the Palace Bar and transformed it from a watering hole in New York’s skid row into a legendary live music venue. Kristal originally sought to make CBGB a stage for premiere Country, Bluegrass and Blues musicians (hence the acronym), but it ultimately became a forum for emerging local talent. Variously angry, nihilistic, political and raw, this music was a radical departure from the disco and ultra studio produced rock of the times. The egalitarian and fundamentally DIY nature of the CBGB bands provided an antidote to the harsh socio-political times. But the music did not have a name until Punk Magazine was established by the young illustrator John Holmstrom in a Connecticut basement. Filled with irreverence and irony, the magazine lent a kind of aberrant formality to the downtown music scene and gave the movement its signature look. Punk was born. And the world of music was changed forever.

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone UK 2013, 97 min, Digital, Dir: Shane Meadows 7 @ 7PM

In 2012, a resurrection no one thought possible took place when legendary band, The Stone Roses reformed after 16 years. With unprecedented access to previously unseen archive footage, Made of Stone is a revealing journey through the life of one of the most revered and influential bands in British music history. Acclaimed film-maker Shane Meadows brings his unique directorial style, humour and emotional depth to the film, capturing the band at work and in their everyday lives as they rehearsed for their much-anticipated reunion, which culminated in three triumphant homecoming gigs at Manchester’s Heaton Park in front of 220,000 adoring fans.

Edmonton Opera/// The Sound of Music USA 1965, 174 min, Digital, Dir: Robert Wise 8 @ 7PM

The Grandmaster (Yi dai zong shi) Hong Kong / China 2013, 108 min, Digital, Dir: Wong Kar Wai, Mandarin/ Cantonese/ Japanese w/ subtitles 4 @ 2 & 7PM, 5 @ 4:15PM, 6 @ 9PM

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, The Grandmaster is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary kung fu master, Ip Man. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China’s last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snowswept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, The Grandmaster features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary Asian cinema, including Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang.

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When a postulant (Julie Andrews) proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain (Christopher Plummer). Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre.

How I Live Now UK 2013, 101 min, Digital, Dir: Kevin MacDonald 10 @ 9PM, 11 @ 5:30PM, 12, 13, 15 @ 9:30PM

Drawing on Meg Rosoff’s prizewinning youngadult novel, this is the story of Daisy, a tough, blond punk (Saoirse Ronan) sent from her ultra-urban life in America to stay with distant relations in remote rural England. With her black t-shirt and eyebrow piercing she’s immediately out of place, but that’s the least of her worries. In this near-future, war has broken out, and as white ash falls from the skies and the military evacuates the cities, she’s forced to depend on people she barely knows. With the mesmerizing Ronan at its centre, How I Live Now soon develops into an engrossing character study set on the brink of apocalypse. As Daisy flees through dangerous territory seeking a return to safety, she reveals layer after layer, peeling back the brittle, city-girl exterior to show the complex, vulnerable young person beneath. (Cameron Bailey, TIFF)

Salute to Peter Wintonick Let the Fire Burn USA 2013, 88 min, Digital, Dir: Jason Osder 10 @ 7PM, 11 @ 3:45PM, 11, 14, 16 @ 9:30PM, 12 @ 1PM

This gripping documentary details the decadelong escalating conflict between Philadelphian authorities and MOVE, the African-American extremist organization that reporters sometimes referred to as a “cult” and its members as “terrorists.” On May 13, 1985, the tensions culminated in an armed confrontation that destroyed an entire community. By 5pm that fateful day, police had already fired over 10,000 rounds of ammunition into a fortified row home containing children and adults when it was hit by a helicopter bomb. The resulting fire ultimately claimed the lives of five children and six adults and destroyed sixty-one homes. It was an American tragedy that illustrated how intolerance and fear can lead to unthinkable acts of violence.

DEDfest/// The Thing USA 1982, 109 min, Digital, Dir: John Carpenter 10 @ 11:30PM

January. Edmonton. When it’s this cold outside, man is the warmest place to hide. DEDfest is proud to bring John Carpenter’s The Thing back to the big screen. A twelve man research team in the Antarctic must survive isolation, paranoia and, more importantly, each other when an alien life form capable of taking the shape of anyone or anything with which it comes into contact infiltrates their group. Join Dedfest for an evening of flamethrowers, J & B Scotch, amazing practical FX, and Kurt Russell’s epic beard as you witness the glory of this 1982 classic!

Peter Wintonick (1953 – 2013) was an independent documentary filmmaker based in Montreal. A winner of the 2006 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, he was a prolific award winning filmmaker and one of Canada’s best known international documentarians. He was involved in running Necessary Illusions Productions and was a co-founder of DocAgora, a filmmaker collective that focuses on cutting-edge, documentary production and new ways of funding filmmakers. In honour of his career, Metro Cinema presents two of his better-known films. Before his passing, the filmmaker was working on his final film Be Here Now, which will be completed by the EyeSteelFilm team and his daughter. Portions of the admission to these screenings will be donated towards the completion of this film.

PilgrIMAGE Canada 1999, 82 min, Digital, Dirs: Peter Wintonick, Mira Burt-Wintonick 11 @ 7:30PM

Co-directed by Peter Wintonick with his daughter, Mira Burt-Wintonick, PilgrIMAGE is a film about filmmaking. It poses questions even as it seeks answers: How does each of us watch movies and media? And how does that change from generation to generation? In a humorous, eye-opening documentary that spans the globe, this filmmaking father-daughter duo visit cinematic landmarks - Fellini’s hometown, Riefenstahl’s Nuremburg, Lumière’s first factory - and encounter people with all types of film life lessons to impart. Equal parts verité filmjournal, digital-diary and ciné-blog, PilgrIMAGE presents a series of Socratic father-daughter dialogues, gleaned from years of inter-continental film-gypsy journeys, and meetings with other film ‘pilgrims’ and media practitioners, from a renowned documentarian of cinema’s Generation Why? to those of the next-wave Generation D (as in digital) era.

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media Canada/ Australia/ Finland/ Norway 1992, 167 min, Digital, Dirs: Peter Wintonick, Mark Achbar 12 @ 2 :45PM

Funny, provocative, and surprisingly accessible, Manufacturing Consent explores the political life and ideas of Noam Chomsky, the world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist. Through a dynamic collage of new and original footage, biography, archival gems, imaginative graphics, and outrageous illustrations, the film highlights Chomsky`s probing analysis of mass media. A mammoth two-part project, the film is nonetheless light on its feet, favouring a style that encourages viewers to question its own workings, as Chomsky himself encourages his listeners to extricate themselves from the “web of deceit” by undertaking a course of “intellectual self-defense.” As relevant today as it was 20 years ago and having played in countless cities around the world, the film has won many awards and remains one of the most commercially successful documentaries in Canadian history.

Directed by a true master of heart-pumping action, John McTiernan, Predator is an entertaining marriage of action and science fiction. The innovative use of special effects make this film stand out from the average blood and guts action film and the point-of-view technique previously reserved for horror films, gives the viewer a digitized stalking perspective of the ghastly Predator. One of Arnold Schwarznegger’s best roles, the film lets him fly with some of his patented one-liners, but for the most part he’s restrained... the film stands the test of time: a stylish unbridled action film that ranks extremely high in its genre. (Mike DiBella, Rovi) Admission is free for students with valid ID.

The Armstrong Lie USA 2013, 124 min, Digital, Dir: Alex Gibney 17 @ 6:45PM, 18 @ 2PM, 19 @ 4:45PM & 9:15PM, 20 @ 7PM, 21 @ 9:30PM

Lance Armstrong was considered one of the greatest sports figures of all time; the man who put competitive cycling into the global spotlight (no comma) by beating cancer and winning the Tour de France seven times. His successes earned him an immense fortune and worldwide fame as one of the most influential and inspiring sports figures of recent memory, as well as a pop culture phenomenon, thanks to his Livestrong initiative. Beginning in 2009, documentarian Alex Gibney followed Armstrong for four years chronicling his return to cycling after retirement, as he tried to win his eighth title. Gibney was also there in 2012 when Armstrong admitted to doping, following a federal criminal investigation, public accusations of doping by his ex-teammates, and an investigation by the US Anti-Doping Agency. The Armstrong Lie gives audiences a glimpse into the unraveling of a sports legend.

JANUARY 2014 SCHEDULE

All the best for 2014 and enjoy the films! Metro Cinema’s Programming Team

It seems the music never ends at Metro. The Canoe Theatre Festival is bringing Nunavut’s world-renowned singer, Tanya Tagaq, and her musicians to our cinema to provide live musical accompaniment to the classic silent film, Nanook of the North. And finally, be sure to brave the frigid weather and come out to support our monthly film series, with films that range from Being John Malkovich and Road to Perdition to City of God.

Metro’s on-going commitment to showcasing local filmmakers and artists continues with animator John Osborne’s visually stunning short films set to the live improv music of the BEAMS Orchestra (Imagery and Music). Meanwhile, the multiple award-winning film, Magnetic Reconnection, by Edmonton’s own Kyle Armstrong, is featured in the Best of the Rural Route Film Festival. The Culture Collective returns with it’s multi-media variety showcase of local talent. And also returning, is the third instalment of Mostly Water’s Metro Shorts, which gives local filmmakers another chance to present their short films and win!

This month we pay tribute with film screenings to both a globally respected Canadian documentarian, Peter Wintonick (PilgrIMAGE and Manufacturing Consent), and an iconic British actor, Peter O’Toole (Lawrence of Arabia).

With the ringing in of the New Year, Metro would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patronage in 2013 and invite you to join us for another year of challenging and entertaining cinema.

Lawrence of Arabia UK 1962, 216 min, Digital, Dir: David Lean 18, 27 @ 7PM, 19, 26 @ 12:30PM, 22, 27 @ 9PM

An adventure drama of truly epic proportions, Lawrence of Arabia depicts the experiences of British war hero, T.E. Lawrence, during World War I, his exploits in Aqaba and Damascus and work in the Arab National council in particular. Yet, these encounters with impersonal militarypolitical forces become brutally poignant personal dramas as Lawrence simultaneously contends with the cruel Arabian desert and struggles with his own crises of identity and national allegiance. The film is a cinematographic milestone; its ultra-widescreen compositions, shot on Super Panavision 70 film, capture the sublime grandeur of the natural elements as they engulf the fragile humanity toiling in their midst. More than holding his own beside the likes of Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness, Claude Rains, and a host of other acting legends, Lawrence of Arabia was a career-defining role for it’s star, Peter O’Toole (1932 - 2013). Metro Cinema invites you to celebrate the life and work of this venerable British actor in one of the most influential films in cinematic history. The version being presented will be an HD Digital format of the 1989 Director’s Cut restoration. This version runs 216 minutes (including the overture, intermission and exit music) as compared to the original release’s 222 minute running time, with most of the cut scenes being dialogue sequences. Professor Bill Beard from the University of Alberta Film Studies Department will introduce the film on opening night, January 18 @ 7pm.

Road to Perdition USA 2002, 117 min, Digital, Dir: Sam Mendes 21 @ 7PM

Tom Hanks sheds his nice guy image in this Depression-era story, starring as Irish mob enforcer Michael Sullivan. When Michael inadvertently causes the death of a rival gangster in front of his young son, the duo must go on the run together to escape justice, not to mention a hitman (Jude Law) hired to take care of the situation. Sam Mendes’ adaptation of the classic graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner, which in itself is an adaptation of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s Lone Wolf and Cub, is a moody, atmospheric tale of fathers and sons. In classic comic book style, Graphic Content is teaming up with Laura O’Connor of Crime Watch for this contemporary gangster classic.

The Culture Collective is an innovative multi-media variety showcase, featuring some of the best talents in Edmonton’s Film, Performing Arts and Music communities. Birdemic: Shock and Terror USA 2010, 90 min, Digital, Dir: James Nguyen 22 @ 7PM

The Turkey Shoot Choir has been screaming like exploding buzzards for us to revisit this aviary atrocity. Resistance is futile, of course, when the people are calling for laconic acting, unbelievable situations and exploding buzzards. Director James Nguyen has recently released Birdemic 2: The Resurrection. Before we even consider soaring into that suspicious sequel, we surrender, and give the sickos what they seek. If you are fascinated by explosions and buzzards, we expect to hear you shouting from the second row.

Told for the first time in her own words, this alluring documentary offers an intimate look at one of the world’s most recognized sex symbols. Via audio interviews taped a decade prior to her death in 2008, the real Bettie Page emerges from a fog of myth and rumour. With earthy, razor sharp wit, Bettie tells her story -from humble beginnings to scandalous renown as a 50s pin-up model and shocking retirement in 1957 at the peak of her modeling career. This keen insider’s glimpse follows Bettie through decades of broken marriages, born-again Christianity, and bouts of mental illness, before her ultimate return to the public eye in the early 90’s, unaware of her cult status. With a stunning array of gorgeous photographs, unusual archival material, and playful movie footage, Bettie Page Reveals All shows how Bettie’s unabashed sexual expression and provocative poses set the stage for the sexual revolution and ushered in a modern era in fashion.

It has already been presented over 100 times worldwide and he will be in attendance for a Q&A at the 7pm screening on January 25th.

Juma and Latso, young women from one of the world’s last remaining matriarchal societies, are thrust into the worldwide economic downturn when they lose their jobs in Beijing. Left with few options, they return home to their remote village in the foothills of the Himalayas. But home is no longer what it was, as growing exposure to the modern world irreparably alters the provocative traditions of the Mosuo. Determined to keep their family out of poverty, one sister sacrifices her dream of an education and stays home to farm, while the other leaves to try her luck in the city-changes in fortune that test each sister in unexpected ways. Ultimately, though, it’s the sisters’ relationship with one another that hangs in the balance as they struggle to navigate the vast cultural and economic divides that define contemporary China. with

Baikonur Germany/ Russia/ Kazakhstan 2011, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Veit Helmer, Russian/ French/ English w/ subtitles 25 @ 12:30PM, 29 @ 7PM Whatever falls from heaven, you may keep.” So goes the unwritten law of the Kazakh steppes. For the inhabitants of a small village, especially the youthful Iskander, living just downwind from the Baikonur Cosmodrome means that what “falls from heaven” is actually valuable space debris from Russian rockets. Iskander uses his radio expertise to follow launches and calculate where to find the cast-off materials, and when something goes wrong with the latest space millionaire tourist lift-off, he is there when a capsule crashes to rescue the beautiful French woman inside. He hides her in his yurt, and as she suffers from amnesia, Iskander is able to pretend they are engaged. Iskander has turned the ancient law of the steppes to his own advantage, but even the most romantic lie cannot remain undiscovered forever, and soon he no longer knows where he really belongs nor, more importantly, to whom. Recycled Cinema: A Festival of Inappropriation Canada 2013, 90 mins, Digital, Dirs: Various 26 @ 7PM

A collection of short films made by students across Canada, this festival features films of “inappropriation”. Each film contains a mix of pieces from other media, either film, television, radio, or anything else available, paired with some original content by the student. The films range from silly, sentimental, and amusing to outright bizarre. The festival is organized and curated by the students of the University of Alberta.

When down on his luck puppeteer Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) takes a job as a filing clerk on the seven-and-a-halfth floor of the Mertin Flemmer building, he discovers a hidden portal that takes him into the mind of actor John Malkovich for about fifteen minutes at a time. Pretty soon Craig’s co-worker Maxine is charging admission, his wife Lotte is using it to fuel a sexual awakening, and Malkovich is starting to notice that something is up. Music-video mastermind Spike Jonze made his directorial debut with this absurdly original Charlie Kaufman script.

CANOE THEATRE FESTIVAL///

Nanook of the North USA/ France 1922, 79 min, Digital, Dir: Robert J. Flaherty, Live concert w/ film 30 @ 7:30PM

Vocal artist Tanya Tagaq fuses contemporary Inuit throat singing with a live guitar, percussion and recorded throat singing tracks, improvising a live sound scape for a screening of the iconic 1922 film. Nanook of the North is perhaps the most famous (and most infamous) film made about indigenous people and Robert Flaherty’s film is one of the first great “documentaries”. An unforgettable portrait of the traditional life of the Inuit, it also manipulated its subjects, pandering to period stereotypes. Tagaq’s otherworldly singing and Derek Charke’s original score work together to frame the film in a new, contemporary perspective. From Björk, to the Kronos Quartet to Shooglenift, Tanya Tagaq has collaborated with an astonishing range of frontrank global artists. Originally an Inuk throat singer from Cambridge Bay (Ikaluktuutiak), she has developed her own distinct singing style into a contemporary art form. Metro passes not accepted
