When I Walk Canada 2013, 84 min, Digital, Dir: Jason DaSilva 4, 9 @ 7PM, 5 @ 4PM, 6 @ 2PM

While vacationing with his family in 2006, Jason DaSilva suddenly fell down on the beach and couldn’t get back up. In a matter of months he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. His mother reminded him that he was a privileged North American kid; he could still pursue his passions - art and filmmaking. So, Jason did just that, turning the camera on himself to film his body’s gradual, agonizing decline - and the miracles he encountered along the way. Combining cinematic talent with a magnetic personality, DaSilva not only sheds light on his struggles with the disease, but its impact on his creative process and his relationships. When I Walk is an intimate depiction of a disorder that is rarely portrayed on film, and a rousing example of storytelling at its most direct, personal, and affecting. Winner of Best Canadian Documentary: 2013 Toronto Hot Docs, 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival & 2014 Edmonton Global Visions. Filmmaker Jason DaSilva on skype for a Q & A at the July 4 @ 7pm screening.

The film widely considered to be the “Citizen Kane of bad movies” is back! Tommy Wiseau and his popular masterpiece won’t be visiting Metro as often this year, so be sure to catch them when they’re here. You’re my favourite customer. Thanks a lot! Bye. Audience participation is encouraged. Please respect the theatre and fellow patrons, and refrain from using profane language.

Provincial Archives Pre-show/// In July, the Provincial Archives of Alberta is pleased to present selections of advertisements for Albertan political parties. Gathered from their extensive audiovisual holdings, these political ads feature material from the Social Credit, Liberal, Reform, and Progressive conservative parties.

The Grand Budapest Hotel USA 2014, 100 min, Digital, Dir: Wes Anderson 5, 7 @ 7PM, 6 @ 4PM, 6 @ 9:15PM, 8, 10 @ 9PM

The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. Concerning the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune, set against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent - it’s an intricate story, depicted in sumptuous, idiosyncratic detail, and populated by a cast of impossibly eccentric characters - in short: it’s Wes Anderson in fine form.

112 Weddings USA 2013, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Doug Block 11, 14 @ 7PM, 12 @ 4:15PM, 12 @ 9:30PM, 13 @ 1:30PM

For the past two decades, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Doug Block has helped support himself by shooting weddings. Hired for his intimate documentary style, he found himself emotionally bonding with his wedding couples on their big day, only to send off their videos and never see them again. Many years and 112 weddings later, having long wondered what’s become of their marriages, Block begins to track down some of his favourite couples. Juxtaposing rapturous wedding day flashbacks with remarkably candid present-day interviews, 112 Weddings explores timeless themes of love and marital commitment.

Music Docs/// Filth UK 2014, 97 min, Digital, Dir: Jon S. Baird 4, 5, 7 @ 9:15PM, 6 @ 7PM, 9 @ 9PM

Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, Filth follows Bruce (James McAvoy), a corrupt and devious policeman, in line for a promotion and willing to stop at nothing to get what he wants. Even as he investigates a brutal murder, Bruce plots the ruin of colleagues, like Ray (Jamie Bell), whom he feels threaten his aspirations. But as he turns his colleagues against one another, stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce becomes entangled in an impenetrable web of deceit. And with his past catching up on him, a missing wife, crippling drug habit, and suspicious colleagues begin to take a dire toll on his sanity. Can Bruce keep his grip on reality long enough to dig himself out of the filth?

A monthly film series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR and Blackbyrd Myoozik.

Festival Express UK/ Netherlands 2003, 90 min, Digital, Dirs: Bob Smeaton, Frank Cvitanovich 8 @ 7PM

Festival Express is a rousing record of a little known, but monumental 1970 train tour of the same name that traveled across Canada with some of North America’s most popular rock bands, including Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. The film combines live footage shot during the 1970 concerts, as well as footage aboard the train itself, interspersed with present-day interviews with tour participants sharing their often humorous recollections of the events.

DEDfest/// Wolf Creek 2 Australia 2013, 106 min, Digital, Dir: Greg Mclean 11 @ 11:30PM

Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad USA 1958, 88 min, Digital, Dir: Nathan Juran 5 @ 2PM

Pure movie magic! ... This colourful tale has Sinbad and his crew battling evil magician Sokurah over a magic lantern, imperilling beautiful Princess Parisa, Sinbad’s beloved, in the process. What truly sticks in the mind are the awe-inspiring creations of Harryhausen’s creature-feature imagination: the horned Cyclops, cobra-woman, two-headed roc, skeleton warrior, fire-breathing dragon, and much else besides... Harryhausen, as a child, was inspired to take up stop-motion animation by the 1933 classic King Kong. This film, like its close Harryhausen cousin Jason and the Argonauts, has itself dazzled and delighted generations of young moviewatchers and future movie-makers. (Jim Sinclair, Pacific Cinematheque)

Jason and the Argonauts UK/ USA 1963, 104 min, Digital, Dir: Don Chaffey 19 @ 2PM

Inspired by the Greek myth, the story begins when the fearless explorer Jason returns to the kingdom of Thessaly to make his rightful claim to the throne, but the gods proclaim that he must first find the magical Golden Fleece. Jason recruits the brave Argonauts to crew his ship, and they embark on a journey where they encounter such mythic creatures as the bronze god Talos, batlike Harpies, the seven-headed reptilian Hydra, and an army of skeletons wielding sword and shield. This last sequence remains one of the finest that Harryhausen ever created, and it’s still as thrilling as anything from the age of digital special effects. Harryhausen was the true auteur of his fantasy films, and his brilliant animation evokes a timeless sense of wonder. (Jeff Shannon)

The Magic of Ray Harryhausen He was a dreamer and a visionary. Thank goodness Harryhausen was also a technically gifted craftsmen and filmmaker, able to transform his dreams into big screen realities. He spent a lifetime and a prolific career perfecting Dynamation – his unique brand of stop-motion animation alchemy, and in the process brought a pantheon of creatures and heroes to life in dazzling landscapes, both fabled and futuristic. As a special effects pioneer and a master fantasist, his impact on film making has been incalculable, inspiring a galaxy of film making luminaries from Steven Spielberg to George Lucas. And for the multitudes that have sat captivated in the audience, his films have become the enchanted stuff of childhood nostalgia. As Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) put it: “He was the man who made [us] believe in monsters.” Metro is thrilled to share the Harryhausen magic this month as Reel Family presents two iconic films (with an encore of each) that showcase his inimitable talent for bringing legends to life. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad ENCORE 10 @ 7PM. Jason & the Argonauts ENCORE 24 @ 7PM. REGULAR ADMISSION PRICES

Spotlight on Jim Jarmusch///

Crime Watch/// From thriller to comedy and classic to contemporary, Crime Watch offers a diverse and provocative glimpse into the cinematic criminal world. Curated by Laura O’Connor.

Dirty Harry Down by Law USA/ West Germany 1986, 107 min, Digital, Dir: Jim Jarmusch 17 @ 7PM, 19 @ 4:15PM, 23 @ 9PM

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent”. These words from Jim Jarmusch on how he’s inspired to create films, along with his staunchly independent style may be why for over 30 years he’s been considered one of the foremost representatives of independent filmmaking. He’s played by the same rules his whole life – living a counterculture youth, dropping out of journalism school and moving to Paris for a year, and returning to New York to hang out at CBGB’s and make his first feature with a film school scholarship. Down By Law (1986), Dead Man (1995), and Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) - the three films in Metro’s spotlight this month - represent milestones in a stellar three decade career, one in which Jarmusch has somehow managed to retain ownership of the negatives of his entire body of work, and in so doing, remain authentically independent.

Jarmusch’s self-described “neo-Beat-noircomedy” focuses on a pimp (John Lurie), a radio DJ (Tom Waits) and a happy-go-lucky Italian immigrant (Roberto Benigni) who meet while sharing a cell in a New Orleans prison. Forming an unlikely friendship, the three misfits escape into the Louisiana bayou and slog their way through the swamp towards uncertain futures. Photographed in luminous black-and-white by Robbie Müller, Down by Law parlays its brilliant casting into some of the most uproariously funny moments in movie history, even as it subtly explores the fragility of relationships, the difficulties of living together, and the weight of loneliness. “A movie as self-contained as an egg.... an open-ended fable that both invites interpretations and gleefully defeats them. In this and other ways, Down by Law justifies the clichéd label of ‘poetic cinema’” (Luc Sante).

Only Lovers Left Alive USA 2013, 123 min, Digital, Dir: Jim Jarmusch 11 @ 9PM, 12, 16 @ 7PM, 13 @ 3:30PM, 13 @ 9:30PM, 14 @ 9PM, 15 @ 9:15PM

Living a reclusive life in his dilapidated Detroit dwelling, rock legend/immortal vampire Adam (Tom Hiddleston) has withdrawn from the banality and corruption of the modern world, spending his time recording music on vintage instruments. Seeking to shake Adam out of his funk, his nosferatic bride Eve (Tilda Swinton) makes the transatlantic journey from her home in Tangier to rejoin her morose eternal beloved. Eve temporarily breathes new life into Adam’s gloomy existence, but the unexpected arrival of her trouble making younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) threatens to disrupt the couple’s tranquil eternity. Far from your conventional vampire film - these undead aesthetes don’t suck blood, they purchase their plasma from hospitals and sip it from elegant champagne flutes - Only Lovers Left Alive sees Jarmusch using the genre to lament a vanishing world of art, culture and refined feeling in the face of relentless commercialization and mindless consumerism. (TIFF)

Dead Man USA/ Germany/ Japan 1995, 121 min, Digital, Dir: Jim Jarmusch 26 @ 4PM, 28 @ 7PM, 31 @ 9PM

In bringing his distinct vision to the Western genre, Jarmusch created a quasi-mystical avant-garde drama that remains a deeply spiritual viewing experience. After losing his parents and fiancée, a Cleveland accountant named William Blake (Johnny Depp) takes a train to the frontier town of Machine in order to work at a factory. Upon arriving in Machine, he’s denied his expected job and finds himself a fugitive after murdering a man in self-defense. Wounded and helpless, Blake is befriended by Nobody (Gary Farmer), a wandering Native American who considers him to be a ghostly manifestation of the famous poet. Jarmusch once again employs the beautiful black-andwhite photography of Robby Müller, and sets it to a powerful score by Neil Young which all sets a poetic, dreamy mood.

USA 1971, 102 minutes, Digital, Dir: Don Siegel 15 @ 7PM

Dirty Harry was sold on this simple pitch: “A cop who was more violent than the criminals he chases.” Armed with his famous 44 Magnum, Inspector Harry Callahan might be exactly what the city of San Francisco needs with the sniper rifle packing Scorpion killer on the loose, which is why Harry and new partner Chico are assigned to hunt him down. But with Harry’s rough tactics can they keep him locked up? Join Crime Watch for the role that elevated Clint Eastwood to superstar status and ask yourself the question: Do I feel lucky? “Well, do ya, punk?”

Metro Bizarro/// A monthly foray into the weird, wild, and wonderful world of fringe cinema. Curated by Maggie Hardy.

Man Bites Dog (C’est arrivé près de chez vous) Belgium 1992, 95 min, Digital, Dirs: Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, French w/ subtitles 16 @ 9:30PM

This month Bizarro dregs up one of the most controversial and influential films of the 90s. Man Bites Dog is a sick, slick, Belgian flick that’s still happy to bear its fangs. Shot in gritty black and white on a shoestring budget, this is one of the bleakest satires ever made. The premise is simple and oft-imitated: What if you made a documentary about a serial killer while he commits his crimes? It starts off as a mockumentary and ends as a twisted jaunt through hell and the human psyche.

Stories about gangsters, boxers, deviants, and first dates are woven together into pure Pulp Fiction. In the film that made his a household name, Tarantino blends the American gangster genre with a European cinema aesthetic, fills it to the brim unforgettable characters, and peppers with classic dialogue. Pulp Fiction pushes the envelope with its portrayal of tragicomic violence, conversation, and non-sequential storytelling; few films mix the iconic and the natural, the absurd and the mundane, so convincingly. With classic scenes too numerous to mention, memorable performances by an amazing cast, and one of the greatest soundtracks ever, this is a movie that begs to be seen on the big screen again and again.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni UK 2013, 203 min, Digital, Singers: Mariusz Kwiecien, Alex Esposito & Véronique Gens. Sung in Italian w/ subtitles. 20 @ 3PM

“The opera to end all operas” was how the German writer, E.T.A. Hoffmann described Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The story follows the infamous travels of Don Giovanni, a Spanish nobleman, through Europe in the company of his long-suffering servant, Leporello. And when his actions lead to murder, he unleashes vengeance from beyond the grave. Mozart’s score offers many highlights, from beautiful arias and dramatic duets, to the final scene in which the flames of hell take truly tangible form. It had a profound influence on Romantic writers, like Shelley and Byron, and has contributed to our enduring fascination with the licentious figure of ‘Don Juan’. Opera in two acts with one interval. Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Conductor: Nicola Luisotti. SPECIAL ADMISSIONS IN EFFECT: $17 ADULTS, $14 SENIORS/ STUDENTS. METRO PASSES ACCEPTED.

At once a profound biographical portrait, a riotous examination of a man’s controversial art, and a devastating look at a troubled family, Crumb is a genuine American original. (Criterion)

turkey shoot/// A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page and featuring live comedic commentary.

Plan 9 from Outer Space USA 1959, 79 min, Digital, Dir: Edward D. Wood Jr. 23 @ 7PM

This movie was called the worst of all time by The Golden Turkey Awards, Michael Medved’s ancient text that provides Turkey Shoot’s moral compass. Plan 9 satisfies all criteria for a shootin’: it is an inadvertently hilarious hodgepodge of consistency errors, it features a wonderful actor (Bela Lugosi) in questionable material, and fails entirely due to the fatally optimistic ego of its director. Dave and Jeff wonder, though, if perhaps Mr. Wood hasn’t proven to be media prescient with his zombies and vampires. Dave and Jeff wonder though, if perhaps Mr. Wood hasn’t proven to be media prescient with his zombies and vampires. They wonder also, if their mutual attraction for Vampira will provoke public fisticuffs.

In 2026, the populace of the Metropolis is segregated into workers who must live and work in the dark underground, and the rich, who enjoy a futuristic above-ground city of splendour. The tense balance of these two societies is realized through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, many of which presage such sci-fi landmarks as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. Lavish and spectacular, with elaborate sets and modern science fiction style, Metropolis stands today as the crowning achievement of the German silent cinema. (Kino Films). This 2010 version incorporates more than 25 minutes of newly discovered footage, and is the definitive edition of the science fiction masterpiece. Backed by a new recording of Gottfried Huppertz’s 1927 score, the film’s dazzling visual design and special effects are more striking than ever.

Purple Rain (30th Anniversary!) USA 1984, 111 min, Digital, Dir: Albert Magnoli 25 @ 11:30PM, 27 @ 9PM

When Prince’s dazzling and dynamic Purple Rain and the hypnotic hit single When Doves Cry exploded onto the pop-culture scene in 1984, it seemed there was nothing the purple one couldn’t do. The film is basically a featurelength music video, but no musician has ever had a better big-screen showcase for his many talents. The plot is really just a theme upon which to hang some of Prince’s most dazzling songs and some sizzling live-concert numbers. Apollonia Kotero is ravishing as the romantic interest, and Morris Day and the Time provide some terrific musical competition. Purple Rain is an essential artifact of the mid-’80s pop zeitgeist. Fed Up USA 2014, 92 min, Digital, Dir: Stephanie Soechtig 27, 31 @ 7PM, 29 @ 9:15PM

Producer and narrator Katie Couric joins Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth), Regina Scully (The Invisible War) and Stephanie Soechtig (Tapped) to explore why, despite media attention and government policies to combat childhood obesity, generations of kids will now live shorter lives than their parents. Upending the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and how to lose it, Fed Up unearths why far more of us are sick from what we’re eating than anyone has ever realized. Following a group of children for more than two years, Soechtig achieves a profound intimacy with them as they document their uphill battles to follow the conventional wisdom, ‘diet and exercise’, in order to live healthier, fuller lives.
